Mussina making a major difference
Here is Mike Mussina’s line in two starts since coming off the disabled list:
11 innings
7 hits
3 earned runs
1 walk
5 strikeouts
149 pitches / 108 strikes
That’s high-quality stuff. He went six innings and 85 pitches tonight. Mussina should be good for seven innings and 100 pitches the next time out.
Lining up Moose, the Wanger and Andy Pettitte had turned this team around, just as Joe Torre and Brian Cashman hoped it would.
The bullpen is also back to normal now, enabling Torre to use the relievers in the roles they were intended for.
Forgot to mention this before, but Phil Hughes is headed down to Tampa on Monday to continue his rehab there. Hughes won’t be on the mound any time soon, but just being able to hang around with Roger Clemens will be good for him.
It’s hard to believe, but Hughes was born six months before Clemens won his first Cy Young Award.

Wow, they’ll be in Tampa together. Only good things could come from that. Thanks for that update.
AT .500 LETS KEEP IT GOING THE TRAIN IS STARTING TO REV UP CHUUGGGAAA CCCHHHUUGGAAA CCHHUUUGGGAAA CCHHUUGGAA CHHUGAAA CCHHUUGGAA CCCCHHHOOOO CHHHOOOOO…HERE WE COME….
Also, big props to Rasner and DeSalvo.
pete, on espn tonight one of the announcers mentioned that hughes was expected to come back earlier than expected, not sure if thats true, but is it still safe to assume him coming back around july 1st ?
just realized i used expected twice in the same sentence. i’m an idiot. good thing this isn’t an english paper.
please allow myself to introduce….myself.
i’m richie cunningham and this is my wife, Oprah.
Hughes is supposed to throw from the half mound on Monday.
hughes is expected to be back in about 3 weeks according to cashman.
Okay, which top 3 is better…
Beckett, Schilling and Dice-K
or
Wang, Mussina and Pettitte???
And you guys are in dreamland if you think Rasner and DeSalvo will be good on the road. Being down 6 games leaves NY with no margin for error.
Thanks for the info on the bone spur Dr., I looked it up, looks like rest is the best. Guess Giambi can’t do that.
Phew!
watching the replay, boy did we dodge a bullet. Jetes had a near-miss with Zilla. that would have been an ugly collison
Dennis, honestly do you get you get some sort of joy coming here? I never understood people like you I just want a simple yes or no then you can go about your ways.
sorry for the typo btw in case you decide to attack that
Yes, I like to engage in baseball discussion. And it fascinates me that some people seem to just watch the Yankee games and not pay any attention to what goes on with the Boston games. Having MLB Extra Innings lets me watch both so I constantly compare and contrast the teams/players.
And I can’t believe that a fan who watches the Red Sox games will think they’re ripe for a collapse (which is what it would take for the Yanks to overtake them, imo).
Dude, it’s six games. That’s nothing. It won’t take a “collapse”, it’ll take a Yankee hot streak and a rough patch for the Red Sox. You don’t have a twelve game lead. I wouldn’t relax yet. You guys are using a lot of spare parts out of your bullpen and it hasn’t caught up to you yet.
Why can’t you just enjoy the lead and prosperity your team has with Red Sox fans. You’re only going to make it more painful when the Red Sox inevitably give up their lead.
rasmussen is hello?offense?
i’d bet my house on it.
The difference in the standings is pretty much the games that the Sox won over the Yanks
The Yankees can just as easily take the next 5 out of 6 and they are right back in it
You may enjoy engaging in baseball conversation but why do you have a negative connotation with all your Yankees comments? I do in fact watch both teams in that I go to school at UMass and get MLBtv, yet I never put the Redsox down. It seems as if you don’t like the pro-Yankee comments so why come here?
we catch the Sox and win the division ever fricking year. This one is no different.
You mean like the collapse that happened last year when the yankees swept the 5 game series in Boston?
Oh yeah Phil sorry for taking this post off topic. Great job on the blog.
With the Yankee starters all healed up and the REd Sox starters normal I would…
Take Wang over Beckett and D-Mat, draw even on 38pitches,
Take Pettite over Beckett and D-Mat, draw even on 38pitches,
Take Moose over Beckett and D-Mat, concede on 38pitches.
I take Clemens over your Wakefield and Hughes over Tavarez.
Rasner and DeSalvo only need to be average and keep the team in games for a month, I believe they can do that.
But again, that’s just me.
I mean pete not phil
You guys know the drill. The only way to rid ourselves of a troll is to stop feeding it. Time to throw the ice block up on our shoulders.
Is that the same Hughes you declared wouldn’t be back for *at least* 10-12 weeks, Pete?
Deep to left I know the getting rid of trolls routine, I was just wanting to get into ones mind. He seems pretty persistent and usually when called upon they have nothing but garbage to say or seem to disappear.
241 career wins for Mussina tied with Herb Pennock at 52nd for career wins. Juan Marichal is next at 243.
10-12 weeks.
Plus I would not be too excited about
beating
KC 11-23
Texas 13-20
Seattle 15-14
Toronto 13-20
Baltimore 16-18
Good Wins
LAA
Twins
Yanks
I’m not saying that the Yankees have gone out on a tear and destroyed good teams its just that Boston has been beating bad teams like they should.
If they are still 6 up on the Yanks at the end of the month then I’ll be impressed.
dennisrasmussen,
‘Being down 6 games leaves NY with no margin for error.’
What day is it? Right, IT’S MAY 9th. The Yanks start off badly every year it seems while the Red Sox seem to start off well, and they have caught up to them every year. Don’t get ahead of yourself.
Bianca-
give pete a break. its not like Peter hung a giant banner on top of an aircraft carrier and declared mission accomplished
“You mean like the collapse that happened last year when the yankees swept the 5 game series in Boston?”
Are you watching the games? This year’s Boston team is much different (and much better). Just look at Beckett…this year he is a cy young candidate…last year he couldn’t get an off-speed pitch over the plate and the hitters just sat on his fastball. Add in Dice-K and it’s a very different staff (both starters and relievers).
A six game lead isn’t that much if a “fluke” team just gets hot out of the box, but if a good team with a good pitching staff gets six games out in front, it’s not easy to catch them. Somebody will be eating a lot of crow soon.
you have mlb exra innings. wow you’re quite the fan.
it is so easy to find things that could go wrong with the red sox. for one thing, papelbon’s velocity is down lately and his arm slot is dropping down. sounds like favoring a shoulder to me.
lead off and second hitters are batting .227 and .228.
plus shilling is a moron at times which makes for a strange team leader. if all the red sox players who have used steroids, cheated on their wife, or cheated on their taxes were eliminated from tonight’s game, there would likely have been no game for a lack of players.
francona had to tell shilling to zip it before one of his teammates kicked his butt for bringing up topics that no teammate wanted to be talking about at the breakfast table with his wife and family.
the yankees have no equivalent distraction like shilling.
Has anyone seen the clip of Tavarez and Manny during a Twins game recently? I just saw the link over on Steve’s blog waswatching.com. Someone needs to have Pete put that video up here, i cannot stop laughing. For those who haven’t seen it yet, here’s the link.

“I’m not saying that the Yankees have gone out on a tear and destroyed good teams its just that Boston has been beating bad teams like they should.”
And that’s how the Yanks have won the division in the past…by pounding the bad teams. But this season, they didn’t beat the bad teams early, so they’ll have to play really well against the good teams (including Boston) to make up ground.
Boston is doing EXACTLY what it should to win the division…feasting on mediocre teams and beating the Yanks in head-to-head competition.
Are you watching the games? This year’s Boston team is much different (and much better). Just look at Beckett…
Bahahahahaha! We hear this every Spring! Just look at Hughes in about 3.5 weeks! Bahahahaha!
“Okay, which top 3 is better…
Beckett, Schilling and Dice-K
or
Wang, Mussina and Pettitte???”
How about Wang, Clemens, Hughes? oh yeah, and then there are these two other guys, Andy Pettite and Mike Mussina, maybe you’ve heard of them?
blah, blah, blah…
yada, yada, yada…
“papelbon’s velocity is down lately and his arm slot is dropping down. sounds like favoring a shoulder to me.”
And yet he hasn’t killed his team this season like Mariano Rivera has.
“lead off and second hitters are batting .227 and .228.”
Yep, and Yankee pitching still can’t get them out.
“if all the red sox players who have used steroids, cheated on their wife,”
Sheesh, Jason Giambi fits the steroids bill and there have been a ton of rumors about Pettitte cheating on his wife. I would rather not debate personal lives of players here, but since you did bring it up.
“francona had to tell shilling to zip it before one of his teammates kicked his butt for bringing up topics that no teammate wanted to be talking about at the breakfast table with his wife and family.”
Good for Francona. At least he isn’t afraid to call players out over dumb statements. Would you rather the manager not demand any accountability and just sit there looking bored or confused, drinking hot tea like Clueless Joe?
Just so we’re clear, Dennis, you think the divisional race is over, the Sox have it all wrapped up, and playing out the rest of the schedule is just basically a formality?
Fellas, seriously, ignore the Red Sox trolls and they will go away.
As for Phil Hughes, all i can is say is hamstring injuries never, ever go like the team says. Mike Mussina looked great early on, too. He was on the DL for three weeks.
They will not let that kid get on a major league mound until be feels absolutely nothing.
Keep in mind that once he is declared healed, he still needs to get ready to pitch. That’s throw a bullpen (wait two days), throw a bullpen (wait two days), throw batting practice (wait three days), throw in a game (wait five days) throw in a game (wait five days).
That’s 22 days or three weeks. It already has been a week. That’s four weeks. At best, he won’t begin a throwing program for 2 weeks, that’s 6 weeks. Add in a week for the Yankees always being cautious and that’s 7 weeks.
Hughes is not coming back any time soon. Teams lie about injuries.
I hope he comes back sooner than I predicted. I love watching the kid pitch. But he is the most important player in the organization and they are going to be very, very cautious with him.
its time we traded Rasmussen back to the Reds. Better dead than red i always say.
“Just so we’re clear, Dennis, you think the divisional race is over, the Sox have it all wrapped up, and playing out the rest of the schedule is just basically a formality?”
Yes, I think with Boston’s improved pitching, that a 6 game lead is VERY significant (same with Milwaukee, who also has very good pitching) and the division race is probably over.
The wild card is still a possibility. But I can’t stress enough that by losing to bad teams early, the Yanks have really dug themselves a huge hole. And I just don’t see them going on a tear against teams like the Angels or White Sox or Red Sox, etc.
But Pete the reason for optimism with Phil is because they said 4 to 6 weeks but we all knew they meant 10 if he really comes back in 4 to 6 that would be great
no lead is significant on may 9
Hughes is throwing off the half mound Monday in Tampa.
I’ll never get why people go on the COMMENT SECTION OF A BLOG to troll. Do they have no lives? Good God.
dennisrasmussen,
Oh and one more thing. You honestly think the division is over on May 9th? OK, I’m done. You obviously haven’t been a baseball fan for too long. It’s more fun debating with someone who actually knows what they’re talking about.
G’night.
In 1987 the Detroit Iigers entered the last week of the season 3 1/2 games behind the Blue Jays and won the division by 2 games. Its my most memorable pennant collapse because my 8th grade teacher was from Toronto and a Jays fan and boy was he in a bad mood that week.
Okay, I’m done too. There’s only so much idiocy I can take at one time. The division lead (6 games) is out of reach, but the WC race (4.5 games) is still in play? Thanks for the insights, Dennis. You take care now.
rasmussen are you 12 years old?
or younger?
large lead, may 10th. either you are twelve or just a moron..
that is right the Boston rotation will not miss a start the whole year and same with there everyday lineup. they would be the first team in history to do that but what the hell a moron like rasmussen has already given the division to the sux and the brewers…
why watch baseball it is over. I have the package but I have no desire to watch the sux, I watch my team the Yanks…….I know plenty about the sux…
* The ’51 Dodgers have the dubious distinction of having blown the biggest August lead of all-time –13 games on Aug.11 — to the then New York Giants.
* The 1964 Phillies who squandered a 6 1/2 game lead with just 12 to play and were caught by not one but two teams.
The Phils lost 10-games in a row, allowing the Cardinals to capture the National League Flag by one game.
* The Red Sox managed to lose a 14 game July lead to the Yankees in 1978 before losing the pennant in a winner-take all tie-breaker decided on a Bucky Dent homer at Fenway Park.
It’s nice to know with Clemens, DeSalvo, Rasner, & Hughes we no longer have to count on Carl coming back.
But just for good measure, here’s another Dr. Seuss verse for Carl:
I do not like Carl’s predicament
I do not like Carl’s strained ligament
I do not like Carl’s ribs being cracked
I do not like Carl making all that jack
I do not like Carl’s bruised butt
I do not like Carl’s injury rut
I think someone should call the Sopranos
I do not like Carl Pavano
Hey DennisASSMUSCLE, just because you are getting nervous that we are finally looking like the team of old and realizing that your best bet is the wild card if that, doesn’t mean you have to come in here and take away from the success we are having and taint it. If you notice, no one was speaking of the redcox(not a typo) before you because we aren’t worried about them, we worry of our own team and we know that as long we play like we should from now, we will win the east like we should. To reply to your “6 game lead is VERY significant” if boston at 100% swept us when we weren’t running in all cylinders, we can definitely sweep them when we are 100% which will cut the lead to 3 which is NOT significant and besides it’s not like we haven’t been in 2nd and boston in 1st just so at the end boston ends up at 3rd and us at 1st…so enjoy it while it lasts. BTW I’m not even going to bring up the fact how Wang, Pettite, Clemens, Mussina and Hughes makes not only our offense better than yours but also our starting pitching. Also, if you do the research you’ll realize the times where Rivera has given up a few runs, he didn’t pitch for 4 days prior to that so all he needs is consistency and since they realized this and are giving him consistent work now he’ll be fine, I would start worrying if his velocity was down but it’s not.
Dennisrasmussen, Comon! Dude, it’s May. Nothing is EVER over between the Sox and Yankees until September. I’m a Sox fan and I know that. Geeze. If any team can get back from an early drop in the division, its the Yankees. I for one want the Yankees to make the postseason. It makes everything so much more dramatic and fun.
Joe managed to use 6 pitchers in a game in which they only allowed 2 runs and won handily. Laughable.
Pete,
I think Hughes will be back the first week of June if he doesn’t have any setbacks. His 20 year old body will heal a lot faster than Mussina’s soon to be 39 year old one.
LC,
That was funny. You asked why the guy trolls.
Then you responded to him again.
Thats why the guy trolls.
They just want attention. And sure enough, there seems to ALWAYS be someone or two who has as much need to whack a troll as the troll needs to be whacked.
A great thing about this comment section is that our names appear at the top of our comments, rather than the bottom. So its nice and easy to skip over the comments of trolls.
No excuse.
Jamie, CT –
TOO FUNNY! A little strange, no? I don’t think the announcers could believe what they were seeing, and I loved when one of them said, “Make him stop!” Tavarez looked a little too comfortable!!!
AS much as I love Wang, you can’t have him over Beckett, the guy is 7-0!!!!!! We all know that Beckett can’t hack it in the end.
You got to love the people already quitting on May 9th. Can they play 40 games first???
“Sheesh, Jason Giambi fits the steroids bill and there have been a ton of rumors about Pettitte cheating on his wife. I would rather not debate personal lives of players here, but since you did bring it up.”
considering your SS threw his wife into the hood of a car, maybe you should get off your high horse? for real.
rasmusses is following the EXACT same script as hello?offense? and dumpvizcaino. it’s the same guy.
1. start posting mildly inflammatory remarks about minor yankee problems, i.e. “hey, i’m a yankee fan, but i am starting to get concerned about the bullpen” etc.
2. ramp it up with the pessimism, but still claim to be a yankee fan “hey, i just call it like i see it, this yankee team just isn’t very good. i wish they were, but they’re not”.
3. drop the facade and openly start praising the red sox “man, did you see Dice-K?”
4. after everyone ignores, lays low for a few days then comes back with a new name. repeat step 1.
we’re being played. enough.
Peter
Can you find out the status on Pavano?
If he goes under the knife, and is sidelined for X months,
what/if any is the insurance benefit to the Yankees?
Also, how does Pavano, if it happens he’s no longer available impact the yankees payroll tax?
“Also, how does Pavano, if it happens he’s no longer available impact the yankees payroll tax?”
no, they are stuck. at least for this season.
next season they might be able to collect insurance. but his salary is on the books for 2007, no way out from that.
Tano,
Well, I said one thing and left. I didn’t keep feeding him, so it’s not that big a deal.
