  1. Go NYR

You could certainly tell he was a little excited. Bruney is gonna be the next Joe Torre burnout

  2. Rey22

With a 4 run lead, watching him run to second wasn’t bad at all. It was quite entertaining.

  3. Phelps for BUC....

Rey….a 4 run lead with this pitching staff is not nearly enough

  4. Charlie

Bruney out in the 7th for Myers. Is a left or a righty up?

  5. Rey22

Yeah, just as I wrote that Texas started threatening. God dammit.

  6. art vandelay

what is he wearing lipstick in that picture ? at least he didn’t borrow arods purple lipstick from last season … red was a pretty good choice …

  7. Josh

    lol that was priceless

  8. Phelps for BUC....

why is Britton not up ? He is lights out in Scranton ? Is it the clubhouse catering staff limiting Bruney, Bean and Britton from accessing the same buffet ?

  9. Charlie

Torre managing this like its game 7 of the World Series.

  10. Dint

Now see….Why not Myers for one more batter (he is dominating righties right now) and then use Vizcaino in the 8th? He has used Proctor and Bruney and it is not even a save situation. Until Torre can find roles for his bullpen, people are going to disagree everytime. Has proctor pitched three days in a row now?

  11. gustavo pacheco

did he ask for the ball?

  12. Dint

correction: this technically is a save situation but still, no reason Myers cannot face one more batter.

  13. Dint

Hopefully they don’t bring Proctor back out and Farnsworth gets a nice 4 run lead to turn into a save situation.

  14. randy l

haven’t seen him run before for obvious reasons, but nieves seems to run well for a catcher. his teammates seem to like him. who knows, maybe he’ll turn it around.

  15. Jeff NJ

it may not be pretty but so far so good. Now he better leave Proctor in in the 8th.

  16. Wolf In Pinstripes

Poor Nieves….LOL I really do feel bad for the guy.

  17. Jeff NJ

Is he really bringing in Farnsworth here? It’s like he’s looking for the reliever due for the bad day.

  18. Will Nieves

Thanks Wolf, I appreciate it. I’ll be OK. I did a little something for myself and put another “L” in my forst name. How do you think it looks? Uh oh, better pay attention, Farnsy is throwing this ball shaped thingy at me.

  19. SJ44

It was the right move to bring in Farnsworth.

Proctor threw 23 pitches yesterday. They can’t keep having him pitch 20+ pitch outings on consecutive days. That’s how you kill guys.

Farnsworth and Mo have to pitch. The only way they are going to get going is to get steadier work.

If Farnsworth can’t hold a 4 run 8th inning lead, then you need to know that now and not in September.

The “culprit” tonight is Bruney. You can’t pitch backward, which he did, and that’s what forced Joe’s hand here.

I am not a big fan of needing 5-6 guys to finish games. But, you gotta do what you gotta do to win games and not lose any more ground to Boston right now.

Guys like Bruney, and Henn last night, simply have to trust their stuff more, walk fewer people, and do a better job of pitching to the game situations. Its their weakness as young pitchers.

Hopefully, Mo can finish the job tonight. He needs the work and needs to get some confidence back.

  20. SJ44

That’s real smart…..A Yankee fan comes running out on the field with a 1-2 count on Sosa and you freeze your closer for 3-4 minutes while he is running around the field.

Sosa then hits a 1-2 pitch for single. Real smart thing for a Yankee fan to do.

They shouldn’t arrest the punk. They should execute him.

  21. Dr. Acula

    SJ44-

“They shouldn’t arrest the punk. They should execute him.”

First send him to Abu Ghraib!

  22. Erick

What are the on field delays?

  23. daysleeper

people running out onto the field.

  24. Phelps for BUC....

the kid is lucky Torre did not put him in the game thinking he was the one reliever he had not used

  25. Jeff NJ

8 out of 11, finally back at .500. Congratulations players and fans! Next stop 5 games over. I predict it will be about 12 days from now.

  26. Khoa Le

    Phew!

  27. SJ44

It makes no sense to me. If you are a Yankee fan, why in the world do you want to do that at all, let alone with Mariano pitching?

Its just a punk move. That’s the kind of crap that gives Yankee fans a bad name. Makes me nuts.

  28. Khoa Le

Phelps, more like his hamstring’s lucky!

  29. Dr. Acula

    Phelps for BUC-

    LOL!

  30. Strummerson

Congratulations Will Nieves, but we need a back-up catcher more than a mascot. All of this hoopla is quite annoying. We can’t afford comic relief on this roster.

  31. Khoa Le

SJ44, yeah i agree (though execution’s a bit harsh haha)…i say let the batboy tackle him. which game was that? wasn’t that a toronto or redsox batboy that walloped that idiot?

  32. dennisrasmussen

“Guys like Bruney, and Henn last night, simply have to trust their stuff more, walk fewer people, and do a better job of pitching to the game situations. Its their weakness as young pitchers.”

This has been a problem for ALL yankee pitchers this season. They’ve been giving up a ton of hits on 0-2 and 1-2 counts, struggling to finish off hitters, etc.

And even though Rivera actually pitched a scoreless inning tonight, hitters are digging in their heels and taking more aggressive swings against him this season. His velocity may not be down a whole lot, but batters don’t seem the least bit intimidated facing him anymore.

  33. randy l

    sj44,
just an aside here, but how is is that crazed fans can run all over the field and not pull hamstrings or strain obliques? well ,i guess thay have the advantage of not having been trained by marty miller.

  34. Dr. Acula

    Khoa Le-

    LOL!

  35. Dr. Acula

Gotta hand it to the “Crazed fan” – he showed more guts and energy than pavs.

  36. dennisrasmussen

“8 out of 11, finally back at .500. Congratulations players and fans! Next stop 5 games over. I predict it will be about 12 days from now.”

And Boston will still be up by about 6 games.

It’s like a golf tournament. You can’t win the tourney in the first round, but you sure as heck can lose it. IMO, the Yanks lost the division with their horrible start, and not beating up on bad teams like Tampa and Baltimore. And rolling over and playing dead vs Boston didn’t help matters any, either.

The schedule is just too tough coming up to get on any real winning streak, and they’d need to reel off about 10 in a row to make up any meaningful ground.

  37. daysleeper

well then dennis, why bother playing the rest of the season then? let’s just crown the red sox and brewers AL and NL champs!

  38. Khoa Le

Dennis, tell that to Tiger Woods. Go back to your sox blog if you want to live-comment on Sox games. You’ll probably have a more captivated audience. Pete, can you note the IP on this guy?

  39. Charlie

“It’s like a golf tournament. You can’t win the tourney in the first round, but you sure as heck can lose it. Are you for real? Have you watched any Yankees seasons over the past 7 years? As the Yankees have proven in the past they are very capable of coming back this year. The past isn’t proof that they will, but it’s proof enough that premature declarative statements such as your own are stupid, dumb, idiotic, stupid and nonsensible.

Peter: please ban this high school troll.

  40. Erick

Guys, what exactly is a bone spur, I don’t know the meaning of the term in english, thanks.

  41. hmmm

“IMO, the Yanks lost the division with their horrible start, and not beating up on bad teams like Tampa and Baltimore. And rolling over and playing dead vs Boston didn’t help matters any, either.”

well, luckily your opinion isn’t worth all that much.

this is such a dumb thing to say.

  42. hmmm

“Guys, what exactly is a bone spur, I don’t know the meaning of the term in english, thanks.”

A bone spur forms as the body tries to repair itself by building extra bone. It generally forms in response to pressure, rubbing, or stress that continues over a long period of time.

  43. y-pac

jajajajaja his first hit of the season and he was so happy, and then he tried to do an inside of the park home run!!!!!
    you better calm down

  44. dennisrasmussen

“Are you for real? Have you watched any Yankees seasons over the past 7 years? As the Yankees have proven in the past they are very capable of coming back this year.”

Yep, each and every one of them. This year’s Boston team has the best pitching staff (both starters and bullpen) and if you want to kid yourself thinking the Sox will just fade away magically, then go ahead but you’re going to look like a fool in a month or two.

  45. Erick

    Thanks hmmm.

So does it heal on it’s own or do they have to open up and remove if it doesn’t?

  46. Erick

    Rasputin,

The Sox won’t fade, but just like the Yankee starters will look more like themselves, so will the Sox starters and they’ll come back to Earth soon.

It will be a fine race for first that’s for sure.

  47. Wolf In Pinstripes

“this is such a dumb thing to say.”

hmmm – Consider the source, my friend. ;)

  48. VTYanks fan

    Mr. Dennis,
If you think the Red Sox will keep their current pace, then you must also think the Brewers are going to win the NL and challenge for the best record of all time…YOu have a guy who has had one healthy season in his career (Beckett), you have a 40-year old pitcher who is almost guaranteed to break down (Schilling), you have an unproven commodity who is obviously struggling (Dice-BB), you have a freak show who is NOT going to have a 2 ERA for the rest of the year (Wakefield) and you have Tavarez and an unproven young left. If you hadn’t noticed, the performance of the starting rotation contributes to the performance of the bullpen. Yes, right now the Red Sox look awesome and they have dominated the Yankees, they are 5-1. Of course, you can take all of those with a grain of salt seeing as how the Yankees hit Schilling, Beckett and Dice-K twice. The Yankees have the best offense, the Red Sox offense will struggle and the Yankees will make up ground.

Seriously, you should talk with Jeff who writes for the Sox side on Soxandpinstripes.com, he LOVES the Sox….

Go yankees. Derek is a god and Rivera will be fine.

  49. Dr. Acula

    Erik-

    “So does it [bone spur]heal”?

As a doctor, I always treat spurs with Leaches & Possum fat.

  50. Jeff NJ

Boston always fades away, and we wish you would too PennisRasmussen. Seriously Sox fans must be peeing in their red painted clothes, the Yankees are playing like the Yankees again, and Clemens and Hughes haven’t even contributed yet. Oh and the Red Sox fade every single year bear none. Every single one. 3rd place last year! What a joke. Enjoy first place in May, it will not be lasting long.

  51. Deep to Left

    Dennisrasmussen:

Good point DR. I guess the Yanks will have to play for the wildcard now. I mean, what’s Boston’s magic number? About 125? Boston can sprint out to a 6 game lead in a month, but the Yanks can’t make up a 6 game deficit in 4 months.

What an ignorant troll. Please go play in traffic.

  52. hmmm

for the record, the Sox ARE a good team. i’m not in denial that the Sox are good.

but the Yankee are good too. they have just had an unfortunate string of injuries.

Boston has not had a single significant injury yet.

if they go the whole season without any injuries, you are right, the yankees might not catch them.

that seems unlikely, but it’s not impossible i guess. the 2005 White Sox went the entire season with their rotation intact. it can happen.

but even if the yankees don’t catch Boston, they are going to be in the hunt. all those teams in the central are going to start beating up on each other, and the Yanks will have a definite shot at the wildcard. same with the Sox if the yankees win the East.

  53. randy l

i don’t usually like much from bill james, but his pythagorean standings is interesting. despite all the injury problems, the yankees are only three games back in espn’s ExWL standings.
what this means is that with the plus scoring differential the yankees have they should be three games better than they are.
just like nieves having bad luck that none of his 19 balls put in play( before tonight)found a hole the yankees have had some bad luck to be six games back, according to james they should only be three back.
even playing at low ebb the yankees hung close( in the expaned standings). the red sox have their problems. lugo and crisp hit one and two tonight and are hitting respectively .227 and.228. and this is without being injured. lugo and crisp are both wound pretty tight for the fenway spotlight. as the season goes on the pressure only increases.
if the yankees play their game, they should be in good shape.

  54. Jimbo

From the other thread, regarding Clemens being “Just a Guy”

“and you’re JAI. guess what the I stands for?”

I almost drowned the keyboard when I read that. Things are always funnier after a good win.

Shouldn’t you just say that dennis rasssssmussssen is JAI?

PeterAbe, you really need to do a cross-match of IPs as was suggested. Too many wingnuts in Idiotville.

  55. pat

Anyone who has ever been at a T-Ball game will see the hunor in this…

Jeter on the postgame about Nieves trying to run his single into a double said it was like Little League, he just kept running until someone tagged him out.

  56. Summer

    Best hit of the game.

  57. rover

    strummerson:

yes, we can afford it, and it is needed. did you notice the fun in the dugout. sometimes watching a guy used to failure finally succeeding wanting and trying so hard to be considered part of something, can bring just the spark needed to get rolling.
