Five innings and 78 pitches for Rasner?

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on May 11, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Now there could be some reason we don’t know about, but with 8, 9 1 coming up it wouldn’t have been unreasonable for Joe Torre to squeeze another inning out of Darrell Rasner.

He had allowed seven hits and three walks in five innings but wasn’t pitching that poorly. A decent first baseman would have gloved that RBI single by Raul Ibanez in the third inning.

    Couldn’t agree more, Peter.

Take a look at Darrell Rasner’s gamelogs. He comes out after 80 pitches EVERY time.

    WHY!?!?!?

  2. Dr. Acula May 11th, 2007 at 11:55 pm

    Maybe Torre has jetlag

  3. Eric May 11th, 2007 at 11:57 pm

Maybe Joe is burned out just like the pen – this keeps up there will be a new manager next year.

  4. Jeremy May 11th, 2007 at 11:59 pm

My goodness – criticism of Torre!

There is only one explanation of Torre’s treatment of Rasner this season. Torre is allergic to Rasner.

  5. Dr. Acula May 11th, 2007 at 11:59 pm

not only torre asking his pen to pick up 4 innings tonite, DeSalvo is pitching tomorrow, which means another 2 to 4 innings.

  6. SJ44 May 12th, 2007 at 12:00 am

Perhaps Torre knows what anybody who has watched this team knows. The game is over. His team has too many automatic outs in the lineup and they are just mailing in another poor effort. The norm for this team all year against everybody but Texas.

Could he have extended him? Probably so. But, there are so many problems with this team, I don’t even care about what Joe does with the staff anymore. It doesn’t matter.

If Damon, Abreu, Cano and Matsui can’t hit, you can change all the pitchers you want, give Roger Clemens $100 million dollars and it doesn’t matter. If they can’t score, they can’t win.

Rasner did an ok job. Not horrible. Not great. But, if he’s not one of “Joe’s guys”, he gets no run.

That’s why I have wanted Torre out of this job. He isn’t a good gameday strategist and can’t win unless he has ALL the horses. This team falls so short of that, its not funny. So, he’s not winning, regardless of what he does.

Its fitting he spends the entire season with this team. Its going nowhere, so they won’t have to extend Torre after this year. They can blow it up, fix what’s broken, and not have to deal with any percieved disloyal actions in the process.

  7. BX 12 Fordham Road May 12th, 2007 at 12:01 am

I am starting to wonder what is the point with this team…it is like Deja Vu from last season….all-star lineup…banged up pitching….first round embarassment at the hands of Kenny Rogers and the Tigers….

The $1m per start for Clemens could be a huge waste in the end

  8. Yanksmitch May 12th, 2007 at 12:04 am

A huge waste of what??? Steinbrenners hard-earned cash? Please– the Yanks spend money like it grows on trees. Of course you go out and get Clemens, because it gives the team a chance and makes things interesting for the fans.

  9. Ryan May 12th, 2007 at 12:05 am

The pen only has to go 3 innings, not 4, since the offense decided not to show up.

  10. Yanksmitch May 12th, 2007 at 12:05 am

This is a painful night to watch… it’s not like the Yanks haven’t been hitting the ball, but they’ve been isolated and right at people.

  11. Yanksmitch May 12th, 2007 at 12:06 am

Ug. At least we prolly won’t see Washburn in the 9th.

  12. Dr. Acula May 12th, 2007 at 12:07 am

I wonder what the ratings are for 10:00 PM game?

“Michael, we’re bigger than US Steel” ~ Hyman Roth

building on Peter’s earlier post: In terms of stadium capacity, The Yanks have led Away-Game Attendance in ’01, ’02, ’03′, 04, ’05, and ’06, with a low of 77% in 2001 and a high of 89% in 2004. That’s alot of booty!! Er, I mean, like pirate booty ;]

  13. gilly May 12th, 2007 at 12:07 am

torre liked burning the pen. he finds joy in ruining peoples arms and careers. he thinks that starters arms are like paper and relievers arms are like rubberbands.

  14. UNCYankee May 12th, 2007 at 12:08 am

I don’t understand why they don’t step out on Washburn some. He is working so fast they should be doing something to try to get him out of rythm.

  15. Jeremy May 12th, 2007 at 12:09 am

SJ44, it wasn’t too long ago when we came back to win from 4 runs down with 2 outs in the ninth against Cleveland, so anything is possible. But yeah, I know what you mean.

What bothers me most about Torre is I get the impression he’s managing scared. He doesn’t feel comfortable leaving Rasner in any borderline situations (e.g., the sixth inning of any Rasner start) so he goes to his security blanket (Proctor). Try stretching out your starters a bit more, Joe, otherwise we really won’t have a pen left.

  16. Dr. Acula May 12th, 2007 at 12:11 am

    Ryan-

oh, that’s right, we’re on the road; no top of the ninth.

    BX 12-

its MY money – MY money. we pay the $4.75 for da Koshers, etc.

  17. Captain541 May 12th, 2007 at 12:11 am

This is tough to watch..The bullpen will be used in another loss. When they give up 15 runs they score 11, and then they actually pitch well and they cant do anything offensively. It is hard for the offense to get anything going when Jeter and Posada are the only ones hitting. Matsui has done nothing since coming back from the DL besides pulling the ball to 2nd, Cano swings at everything in sight, Abreu is totally lost and Damon should be on the DL. He thinks he is being a hero by playing but he cant hit anyway so what is the difference. Posada should be batting 5th while he is still hot, because he is batting what .400 and never ever comes around to score because Cano swings at everything he sees.

  18. Jeremy May 12th, 2007 at 12:12 am

    Bruney’d.

  19. Jeff NJ May 12th, 2007 at 12:13 am

While it is debatable if he could have left Rasner in one more inning, at least he let Proctor pitch 2, maybe he’ll limit it to relievers today, that would leave many fresh arms for tomorrow. It would be a shame if they can’t comeback and get this win, gotta take advantage of opportunities.

  20. Yanksmitch May 12th, 2007 at 12:14 am

Yeah– what’s the deal with Cano’s plate discipline (or lack thereof) these days? He didn’t used to be this bad, right? He’s starting to remind me of free-swinging Soriano.

  21. Jeremy May 12th, 2007 at 12:14 am

Yup, using Proctor for 2 was smart.

Good thing we got the CS.

  22. Joe May 12th, 2007 at 12:14 am

At least they got that call right

  23. Poland Spring May 12th, 2007 at 12:16 am

I don’t want to quit on Cano. He’s too young and has too much upside at a position that isn’t known for its depth. He will learn to not quit on an at bat with a 3-2 count.
On a POSITIVE note, A-Rod is playing a pretty mean 3B this year.

  24. Joe May 12th, 2007 at 12:17 am

Looks like we get Putz in the 9th if they don’t score here

  25. Captain541 May 12th, 2007 at 12:19 am

It is like a miracle when a Yank reliever actually throws a 1,2,3 inning.

  26. Jeremy May 12th, 2007 at 12:19 am

Betancourt struck out and was almost killed at the same time. I enjoy watching Bruney pitch.

  27. Joe May 12th, 2007 at 12:19 am

    I agree about Cano

It actually looks like the Yankees are trying to change his approach to his at bats trying to get him to be more patient and it just hasn’t clicked yet

  28. BX 12 Fordham Road May 12th, 2007 at 12:21 am

there has got to be some bad karma coming around after wasting all these DeSalvo / Rasner type quality starts…

  29. Yanksmitch May 12th, 2007 at 12:22 am

Let’s hope Putz lives up to his name tonight.

  30. Chris NJ May 12th, 2007 at 12:22 am

Yanksmitch, even last season he had bad plate discipline. Last season Cano swung at either the first or second pitch he saw in every at bat, and with te first two pitches the pticher tries to throw a strike, so contact will be made. He is still being really aggressive, but this year it has caught up with him a little more.

Oh, and I finally realized how bad Abreu has been for most of the season. To me, his terrible performance has been covered up by the rest of the offense, but with a day like today, where he could have gotten us a couple hits to get a couple of runners in scoring position, but yet didn’t. Abreu is swinging at every pitch. He gets behind in the count and then at 0-2 or 1-2, he’ll swing at a slider, lets say, that’s inches above the dirt, and a foot outside of the strikezone, it’s disgusting. I think we could have put Cano in the 2 hole, or bat him 3rd, but we all know his struggles too.

  31. Cheapmonk May 12th, 2007 at 12:22 am

at this rate, Mo may not get 7 saves this year.

  32. Chris NJ May 12th, 2007 at 12:23 am

We have gotten to Putz alot, but with a 3 run lead for him, that’s tough.

  33. Ryan CT May 12th, 2007 at 12:23 am

I am least worried about Cano right now, he is still very young. Our outfield offense is what has been pretty bad. I don’t think any of our 4 outfielders are batting above .250

  34. mel May 12th, 2007 at 12:24 am

Ha Ha, Minky pinch hitting. It’s great that he’s coming along.

  35. Yanksmitch May 12th, 2007 at 12:26 am

Minky pinch hitting is a sign of the times.

  36. mel May 12th, 2007 at 12:26 am

These Seattle announcers on Fox are obnoxious. The worst I’ve heard yet.

  37. CGramazio May 12th, 2007 at 12:27 am

Well, this season is starting to take shape and you can begin to see the contenders and pretenders. The Mets, Braves, Red Sox, Indians, Tigers, Brewers(maybe), and probably Dodgers are for real. Out of the rest, well, the pretenders are easy to pick…it’s those teams in the middle that are difficult to pinpoint. Where the Yankees fall at this point I’m not quite sure.

  38. Yanksmitch May 12th, 2007 at 12:28 am

    Can Cano lay off anything???

  39. abepeter May 12th, 2007 at 12:29 am

I don’t get it. You know Rasner is going to battle to the bitter end. I do not see the point in taking him out after 78 pitches. If he gives up another run who cares, see what he can do in pitches 80 to 100.

  40. Paul9 May 12th, 2007 at 12:29 am

he has been exposed, he falls behind every count and will chase anything. He better find a way to be more patient and swing at better pitches or he is going to have trouble

  41. Joe May 12th, 2007 at 12:29 am

    This game sucked
    Hopefully they can rebound tommorow

  42. Brian C May 12th, 2007 at 12:30 am

If its not the hitting, its the starting pitching, if its not the starting pitching its the bullpen. This team just finds ways to lose. Its going to be a long season. Abreu looks beaten and lethargic as does the manager. No one has the slightest bit of fire. They take this way too easy. This team is a huge waste of time.

  43. Captain541 May 12th, 2007 at 12:31 am

I think they should sit Cano for a couple of days. His at bats are absolutely pathetic. Torre has to teach the young kid a lesson that you cant just give up your at bats and play so nonchalant otherwise he will never learn. It seems like no one talks to him and they just let him do whatever he wants at the plate.

  44. Dr. Acula May 12th, 2007 at 12:31 am

Maybe we should shave our heads?? Seems to have worked for the mets.

  45. Brian M May 12th, 2007 at 12:34 am

Arghhhh I’m gonna have to stop coming to this site if people don’t stop riding players every time they make an out!!!! Makes me wish I wasn’t a yankees fan!

Damon, Giambi and Matsui will ALL finish their deals in NY. Damon and Matsui will hit about .290 in the second half of the season once they have fully recovered from their niggles and settled back into a rhythm. Giambi will hit 30+ dingers. Lets stop crying about them.

Posada will resign for about 2 yrs with an option. Mo will do the same.

Next off season’s major move will be for a new set up guy/ future closer, and a new right handed bat for 1st base. It will not be Teixeira, who hasn’t proven himself sufficiently for the sort of years or dollars it will take to sign him. Remember he is playing in the ultimate hitters park.

The major question for the summer is if ARod will be back, but with Texas picking up some of his tab, we get better value on the deal than any other team could. Plus he is the only right handed masher we have so Cash knows we need him. Unless he hits a slump and everyone treats him like a dog again then he’ll come back. He doesn’t want his legacy to be that he couldn’t handle NY. And he knows that with the young pitching we have combined with Georges cash we will be one of the favs every year. He really does want to win.

As for right field, Abreu will be back if he can recapture the form he showed in the second half last year. History says he will. Remeber he wasn’t hitting too well when he came to NY last year. Players go through slumps, but he works pitchers and finds good pitches to hit. Once he is swinging well again he’ll be fine. Cashman wants short term deals. The option makes sense that way. Tabata be in NY for the start of 08.

  46. KQ May 12th, 2007 at 12:34 am

So much for one of the best lineups in the mlb. The Yankees really need to find a way to win. I’m so furious right now, but I have to keep reminding myself that it’s only May. But honestly, when will it be too late for the Yankees to be in the run?

  47. Captain541 May 12th, 2007 at 12:41 am

It is funny, all Torre talks about is the bullpen is abused. When a veteran is pitching Torre will leave them out to dry, how many times did we see it with Moose and R.Johnson, 1 million?! Even Wang yesterday. But when it comes to a younger pitcher/rookie he pulls them immediately even when they are pitching fine like he is scared and wants to pull them before they even have a chance to prove themselves or try to get out of trouble.

The hit and run was stupid no doubt, but no complaints about the Mariners from me…At least they try vs. the MFY, unlike another AL West team I know, with the exception of yesterday’s game…

M’s about to be 3-2 vs. the MFY this year.

THis guy is an idiot. If wasn’t for blind umpire calling bloomquist, The Yankees are 3-2 against M…. Redsox Fans are bunch of retards and idiots..[/quote]

  49. ansky May 12th, 2007 at 12:55 am

man i have never missed Minky until that grounder got past Phelps as Peter pointed out. That definitely got to me tonight….and yes, i hated the Seattle announcers too.

  50. mel May 12th, 2007 at 1:05 am

Now, Pete, that’s not fair. A decent first baseman would have gotten that out, but he did not serve up a leadoff walk chased by a Jojima HR. He wasn’t responsible for the lack of timely hitting or every LOB. He was also not responsible for Washburn’s gem or 4 starters going 0-fer. Although it may have been his fault that Rasner went only 5 innings because no one can quite figure that one out. No one player was responsible for the loss. Except maybe Abreu or Cano. Just kidding.

Hopefully Rasner’s o.k. I seem to remember, though, that there was a reason that Rasner’s outings are so short. Something about a threshold where he turns into a completely different pitcher.

Things are not all gloom and doom. Jeter and Posada both are hitting in the 360′s and Posada finally threw out a runner. And Abreu really hustled on that foul. Apparently he’s not afraid of going into the stands. And Proctor’s arm didn’t fall off. He lives to pitch another day (sigh). Tomorrow’s another day and the pitching matchups look pretty good over the next two games. They’ll just have to come back and try again. What a waste of a Boston loss, but at least they’re not 8 back.

  51. mike f May 12th, 2007 at 1:08 am

hey mg, did it possibly occur to you that there might be gay yankee fans who DON”T appreciate you using the word “fagg*t”

  52. Brian M May 12th, 2007 at 1:13 am

MG, some straight Yankees fans don’t like it much either. Also not too keen on ‘retard’. No need for it here.

  53. CGramazio May 12th, 2007 at 1:29 am

Bi Yankee fans don’t like it either. That’s not me though.

  54. mel May 12th, 2007 at 2:14 am

Asexual fans would be offended, too.

  55. Brian M May 12th, 2007 at 4:07 am

    Aren’t we all so funny?

  56. kenny lofton May 12th, 2007 at 9:22 am

glad to see that you’re finally catching on, Pete
RE: Torre burning out the pen

  57. yankee21 May 12th, 2007 at 10:31 am

Without question Torre doesn’t have a clue how to manage a staff or a pen. He has his favorites (Proctor and Bruney this year) Villone and Proctor last year where the first slight hint of trouble he’ll have his yes man pitching coach dial up the pen and get them warmed up. It is pathetic how Torre treats the pitchers. Why doesn’t he give Rasner a shot at going deeper? Teach him how to overcome adversity, build up confidence etc… And why the hell is Abreu and Cano not being benched so they can figure it out for a couple of days. Bring up someone who can give them life. This team looks and plays dead and are wasting standout performances from Jeter, Posada, Petite , Bruney and A-ROD. Everyone else is either banged up, coming back from injury or playing like dog crap.

  58. Mike S. May 12th, 2007 at 11:46 am

This is why I’ve been critical of Torre. Rasner has a 3.28 ERA but Joe keeps pulling him too early and going to an already overworked bullpen. Except for the one gopher ball to Johjima, Rasner was pitching well. You don’t know what DeSalvo will give you today, and you may need the bullpen. It will be interesting to see DeSalvo today, given that Seattle had a good look (and a fruitless one) at him the last time out. It’ll be interesting to see how each adjusts to each other in this outing.

    Rasner’s last 4 starts have been…
    5 1/3 78 pitches 3 runs, all unearned
4 1/3 (and I’m still mad about Joe pulling him early in this one) 81 pitches 1 run
    5 2/3 80 pitches 0 runs
    5 78 pitches 3 runs

In between the 2nd and 3rd start, Rasner threw 8 shutout innings for Scranton.

Leave him in for another inning and 20 pitches or so, Joe!

  59. Taylor May 12th, 2007 at 1:02 pm

You’re a reporter Peter. How about you ask him and see what he has to say? I guess he was worried that Proctor was getting a 4 day break soon due to the suspension and wants to make sure he kills it soon.

  60. Ross www.nyystadiuminsider.com May 12th, 2007 at 3:05 pm

Rasner was teetering on the edge of disaster all night. It was right to take him out there.

  61. SJ44 May 12th, 2007 at 3:20 pm

The problem was not Torre taking Rasner out early. Its the fact 3/4 of their lineup are automatic outs right now.

The only guys swinging the bat well are ARod, Jeter and Posada. The rest are outs. Some, can’t even hit foul balls hard anymore. That’s the current problem with this team.

If they don’t score, they can’t win.

Rasner was ok, not great last night. Personally, I think he has pitched well enough to stay in the rotation.

Last night? 50-50 on whether he took him out too early. In the end, it had no bearing on the outcome of the game.

Whether Torre kept him in for another inning or not is immaterial. They aren’t hitting and most of the guys in the lineup last night haven’t hit for 4 weeks now.

If that keeps up, pitching changes and managerial decisions become immaterial. This team won’t win.

The team is built around its offense. When the offense is a mess (which it is right now), the entire team suffers.

Just the way it is with this group this season.
