The Yankees were a disconsolate bunch after this game and rightfully so. They wasted a strong start by Andy Pettitte and now sit eight games out.
After struggling with their pitching for much of the season, the Yankees are now looking for offense. Bobby Abreu (1 for 19), Robinson Cano (4 for 41) and Alex Rodriguez (2 for 16; 5 RBI in 17 games) are all in slumps to some degree.
I was impressed by 22-year-old Seattle set-up man Brandon Morrow, who was at the University of California at this time a year ago and today fanned A-Rod with a 95-mph heater on the outside corner at the knees. Perfect pitch. Morrow was Seattle’s first-round pick last June.

Based on the comments section, it seems many of you are in a panic. I’d like to point out that there are 126 games remaining. That’s 78 percent of the season.
But these next 12 games will be mighty interesting. Three with the White Sox, three with the Mets, three with the Red Sox and three with the Angels. The Yankees better not be waiting for Roger Clemens to ride to the rescue.
I’m flying to Chicago tomorrow morning but expect to check in here sometime in the afternoon.
