The Yankees now trail the Red Sox by 8.5 games, their largest deficit since they trailed by nine games on May 7, 2005.
A word to those in a panic: The Yankees and Red Sox ended up tied that season with the Yankees winning the tiebreaker.
Meanwhile, today is the deadline for the Yankees to either call up Ron Villone or make him a free agent. Villone has appeared in 17 games for Class AAA Scranton. In 23.2 innings, he has allowed 21 hits and 10 walks while striking out 27.
It doesn’t seem likely the Yankees will call him up. Scott Boras claims several teams are interested in Villone. Given the lack of decent lefty relievers, it would figure somebody would sign him.
Here’s what Villone told Chad Jennings of the Times-Tribune:
“If they don’t call me up, I’m going to go somewhere else, probably. I’m not going to say 100 percent because I’m not sure how the scenario plays out. You never know what people are going to say to you. My ears are open and I’m just going to weigh out my options and hopefully things work out.”
