Kyle Farnsworth has made 16 appearances this season. Only twice has he worked a perfect inning.

Robinson Cano is 4 of his last 47.

Brian Bruney is closing in on a shutout. His last 11 appearances: 8.2 3 0 0 6 7

Bullpen on the road trip: 10 3 0 0 6 4

Alex Rodriguez is 2 of his last 25 and has five RBI in the last 19 games.

Hideki Matsui is 8 of his last 17

Outside of that .1 IP/4 ER meltdown in Minnesota, Farnsworth has a 2.25 ERA in 16 appearances (16 IP).

  2. Jeff NJ

Wait so we’re supposed to read that to the tune of London calling? Ok I can do that. I faintly remember the 1978 Yankees recording Queen’s We Are the Champions back in my childhood. Did that really happen or are the fuzzy years in between making up memroies for me?

  3. Billy

Even more than how the bullpen has performed on the trip is how much it has performed. 2 innings per game. And I think if you took the last 10 games it works out to 2.33 per game. I’d take that average the rest of the year.

  4. GUY

Peter good choice but next time you should rock Never Mind the Bollocks Here’s the Sex Pistols. Great CD

  5. hmmm

the sex pistols couldn’t wipe the Clash’s ash. and i like never mind the bullocks…

    just saying.

  6. steve

You should be blasting “Waiting on a Sunny Day” to try to chase those Chicago clouds away.

  7. Brandon

Pete Kyle Farnsworth made some interesting comments vs Clemens today in Chicago, waiting for the link on that one.

  8. Marc

    Brian Bruney is closing in on a shutout. His last 11 appearances: 8.2 3 0 0 6 7

Maybe he should pitch the 8th instead of Kyle Krazy.

  9. jk

Cano is brutal right now. Lots of first pitch swinging. He is an automatic out.

  10. TurnTwo

what were those comments from Farnsworth?

  11. Bill

    Peter,

Can you post the projected pitching match-ups for the series’ against the Mets & Red Sox through next Wednesday?

  12. Jeremy

What are the odds that Bruney become the Yankees’ closer someday? I say 20-1.

  13. Don V.

It’s going to take Torre at least another 3 weeks to figure out Bruney should be pitching the 8th.

Robby Cano’s 1st and 2nd half splits for his career:

    1st half: .740 OPS
    2nd half: .878 OPS

    Cano’s ‘06 June: .398 BA/.998 OPS

  14. Bill

By June, they may be 12 games out.

  15. hmmm

looks like it would be Perez vs. Pettitte, Glavine vs. Rasner, Maine vs. Mystery Meat.

can’t say for the Sox, depends what happens with their rainout and what happens with Beckett.

  16. Don V.

By June, we could be 4 games out. I look at the glass as half full.

  17. Marc

One thing is for sure, Proctor is going to pitch for the next 11 games!

  18. murphydog

Wait… Is that the sun coming out in Yankee world? Beckett is blistered again and will miss his next start and Nancy Drew is hurting.

  19. Bill

Hmmmm- The Sox are playing a DH today.

  20. Marc

Nancy Drew got stung by the wall

  21. Jake

The Pistols do nothing for me.

Cano is too good a hitter to be down for long. I really wouldn’t be concerned with the 8th hitter.

  22. Jeff NJ

Right now Bruney is part of the committee in the 6th and 7th as I see it. I do think it’s a good thing that Joe is defining roles, that all fell part during the losing streak.

    9th: Mo
    8th: Kyle
6th-7th: Bruney-Myers/Villone-Proctor (u can switch Bruney or Proctor)
Long Man: Vizcaino? This is the problem, no long man on the team. Although after Sunday they will either have Wright for that role or a call up until Clemens gets here.

  23. Bill

Adding to my previous post about the BOS DH:

Tavarez in the day game at 12:35pm and Shelling at 7:05pm today.

  24. hmmm

    “9th: Mo
    8th: Kyle
6th-7th: Bruney-Myers/Villone-Proctor (u can switch Bruney or Proctor)”

the problem with this is that Bruney is a better pitcher than Farnsworth. Proctor may be as well.

  25. Jake

The bullpen roles collapsed because the starters were going 4 innings. Its hard to get into a rythym when that happens. The better the starters do, the better the pen will be.

And having many choices for the 8th is good news. Hopefully Vizcaino figures it out and it becomes even better for Joe out there.

Bill, why you obsessed with the Sox?

  26. Bill

Jake- We’re trying to figure out what they could potentially throw out there against the Yanks SP Mon-Wed.

  27. Marc

You guys dont understand the Joe/Cashman mentality, Krazy Kyle makes the most money so he pitches the 8th. Bruney and Proctor are just cheap young arms who don’t mind pitching every day.

Isn’t ironic that its “ I can’t pitch every day Farnsworthless criticizes Clemens’s deal.

  28. Jake

Beckett looks like hes out with that finger and with his history I can’t see them rushing him back.

  29. Bill

Jake- Does this mean I am obsessed with the Mets too because I asked what their SP would be against the Yanks?

I’m confused on what you’re trying to prove… besides nothing.

  30. saucy

    did farns criticize it?

of all people, the most overpaid bullpen guy who has a non-verbal agreement of one inning, non-consecutive games…

  31. Jake

If you think Torre manages and plays people by how much they make you’re out of your mind. He wouldnt be long for the world of managing if you managed a team like that. It’s about performance and performance only.

Bruney and Proctor are more versatile than Farny so thats why they can go 6-8.

  32. Jake

Just asked a question Billy. So i wouldnt say Im trying to prove anything besides asking why you are obsessed with the Sox.

No need to get an attitude and get snippy like a little girl. You want your dolls back Billy??

  33. DesignatedBlogger

Bruney has really become the man in the bullpen (besides Mo, of course). Whenever I see Farnsworth or Vizcaino come in I know I’ll have to sweat it out.

Love The Clash. Sex Pistols put out the one great album and gave R&R a kick in the ass just when it needed it, but the Clash were better musicians and had more staying power. More diverse.

  34. Marc

    Jake,

Why can’t Proctor and Bruney go 7 & 8. All starters can go 6 right now.

  35. Curly

The bullpen could be late game lights out if the starters keep giving length.

  36. TurnTwo

by the way, pete… if you keep and post stats like this on Farnsworth, another team might take notice (of course with the growing popularity of the blog) and not take him, even if we pay them to.

  37. Larry

Let me be the first to refer to Robinson as “Robinson Can-not Hit”. I agree he is too good to stay in this funk, but he really sucks right now.

Matsui is heating up, such a breath of fresh air seeing that guy bat along with Jeter and Jorge. Those two are just NASTY right now and I love the ole reliables setting the bar.

A-Rod will get going again at the plate, but let me say that I have been pretty impressed by his defense of late.

Bringing up Abreu just makes me angry, so I’ll leave it at that until I see semi-consistency out of him.

Melky is showing signs of encouragement both at the plate and in the OF. Dude has an arm and some legit speed out there.

AND MARIANO DIDN’T BLOW IT!!!! YAYYYYYY!

  38. Jake

Then where would Farny go? He’s a one inning pitcher for better or worse. Bruney and Proctor are versatile. They can pitch 2 innings. They can pitch 3 days in a row. Better to keep Farny healthy and effective or why have him on the team?

And besides that one outing hes been pretty much dominating. Before we go annointing Bruney the new bullpen God can he keep doing what he’s been doing which has been terrific.

  39. Rufus

Why would anyone want to trade from a strength like the pen? I think we proved already you can never have enough pitching.

  40. Marc

Bruney has been lights out for a year now. He is consistent.

  41. saucy

“If you think Torre manages and plays people by how much they make you’re out of your mind. ”

whoa, my mind is over there. time to climb back in.

  42. Billy

Jake – just want to make sure everyone knows that Billy (me) and Bill aren’t the same person.

I don’t care what other teams do. Just win your own.

  43. Jeff NJ

Billy I couldn’t agree more, what other teams are doing does not matter. If the Yankees win series from here on out, which I will approximate as winning 2 out of every 3 games, they will finish with 101 wins, I’m pretty sure that will be good enough for the playoffs even if Boston wins 130 games.

  44. murphydog

Josh Beckett simply is not built to pitch effectively and give his team 200 innings. He can do one or the other. Not both, Rob Neyer writes [over at Insider, ESPN.com.]

    Wow… a non-believer at ESPN/RedSox Nation?

  45. jt

1050 Espn Radio- Steve A Smith just announced on his show that Yankees has no shot winning world series this year.

He says Arod will opt out, Joe will be gone as well after this season is over.

  46. jt

He says Mets will find a way to win the world series. I thought He was a Yankees Fan.

  47. meyanksfan

London Calling is in my top 10 of greastest albums all time. Love it.

Farnsworth needs to shut his trap and learn how to throw strikes.

  48. TurnTwo

i dont think anyone here really cares what steven a. smith has to say about the yankees.

  49. Larry

The Yankees can still win the Series but need to really get it going the rest of May. That means sweeping the Sox and the Angels in NY and killing it in June.

In terms of Torre and A-Rod being gone, would it surprise anybody if this occurs? They don’t have to win it all to keep both of these guys, but they have to make the playoffs to keep Torre.

Worry about that later, focus on today’s game, then tomorrow’s, then the next. One at a time.

  50. Marc

He knows nothing but basketball. Hes so arogant, I can’t listen to him or Mike & Mike

  51. KMT

I for one would appreciate it if Torre uses Proctor a lot during the next four days and gives him the Boston series off. Boston absolutely torches Proctor.

    – KMT

  52. saucy

steven a smith, is that the guy who seems like he’s never smiled in his life?

  53. Kevin M.

Uhmmm, does anyone know what Farnsworth actually said???

  54. jt

If I had a gun, I will swear I shoot Steven A Smith for being a fraud… He’s irrated Yankees Fans like myself.. He’s killing Yankees and Joe torre for not winning a the world series last seven years.

Mets had top payroll in Nl for last five years.Steve Phillips was fired as Gm, Mets was laughing stock before Omar Minaya came onboard. Mets haven’t won a world series in nearly 20 years. Did Willie and Mets won world series last year?

  55. Marc

Not to mention his fvorite team is the Knicks who spend the most and suck for the last 10 years!

  56. Jeff NJ

Steven A. Smith is the worst type of Yankee fan. He doesn’t even think Clemens will help. How some of these idiots get to do a daily show in a major market is beyond me. He is another one that thinks A-Rod, Jeter and Mariano are going to ask for the Clemens family plan. Which is arguably the dumbest thing ever said. Actually Michael Kay is the only interesing, intelligent listen on that station. I do admit I listen to Mike and Mike in the morning on my drive in, but I’m thinking of upgrading to satellite radio, wonder if there are any all Yankee or at least all NY sports radio stations on satellite.

  57. Marc

Wait a minute, Clippard was just taken out after one inning in which he struck out the side, is he hurt or are they saving him for Sunday?!

    Pete?!

  58. hmmm

“Wait a minute, Clippard was just taken out after one inning in which he struck out the side, is he hurt or are they saving him for Sunday?!”

    interesting.

  59. Marc

Dont forget Sunday is a Primetime game on ESPN vrs. the Mets, maybe the Yanks want to show off the 2nd best prospect!

  60. saucy

M&MD M&M & Smith may not be the most knowledgable, but they get fan reactions and become household names for the most part. don’t believe me, read this thread. more knowledgable guys don’t get shows like them. they end up writing books and/or blogs.

  61. david

“If I had a gun, I will swear I shoot Steven A Smith for being a fraud… He’s irrated Yankees Fans like myself.. He’s killing Yankees and Joe torre for not winning a the world series last seven years.

    Dude, you in a rush?

Nothing worse than sounding like an idiot instead of making a point.

  62. stuart

I was thinking I have been hearing lately that the Yanks are this and that(mostly not good and including the word old)so I did some research. The sux are as old if not older. the sux have 3 starters under 30; crisp, pedroia(platoons) and Youkilis(28). The yanks have 1 cano who is 24.. But the Yanks have Cabrera who is 22 and will not be 23 till august..

pitching the sux have shill 40 +, wakefield 40+, tavarez 33, timlin 40, donnell 34, etc. you get my drift.. manny is 34 he is older then any of the yankee outfielders and even Ortiz is 31.. My point is if the yanks had a better record there age would not be any issue..

Hughes is 20 and everyone has seen his upside can be huge..

the point is if the yanks just play better all the negative noise will stop…

  63. Kate

Clippard was mentioned as a possibility for Sunday.
Then again, Torre said he hasn’t given up on Wright either.
Any updates on why he was taken out?

  64. jt

    Yes, work at 1:30

  65. david

    Satellite Man –
There are no regional sports stations on satellite. They are all dominated by ESPN. You have ESPNnews and ESPN Radio. Then some generic ass sport stations that are slowly being thrown out the door. You’ve got an all NBA station, all NFL and all NASCAR.

    That’s Sirius.

XM has baseball, but nothing else. Wish I had baseball, but I won’t switch.

  66. TurnTwo

nice pickup, marc… me thinks you may be right… correct me if i am wrong, but i think Brandon Claussen made his MLB debut against the Mets on national TV against the Mets, too… then we traded him for Aaron Boone.

  67. Drew

Pete – is Clippard going Sunday? He was removed after 1 inning at Scranton today.

  68. Jeff NJ

Clippard is the better prospect, but it would require a roster move on the 40 man roster. Correct me if I’m wrong but does moving Pavano from the 15 day to the 60 day DL accomplish that? I mean, he’s been out a month already, another month would not be a stretch.

  69. Kate

    XM is good for baseball.
I listen to it daily in the morning – to Baseball This Morning and I like The Show on my ride home.
I think Dibble and Kennedy do a good job and I don’t get a biased feeling from them even if Kennedy managed the Red Sox.
    They don’t berate callers either.

  70. jt

I thought Clippard starts tonight for Scranton?

  71. Brandon

He’s arguing against the Mussin and Clemens how the Yanks haven’t fully committed to move forward instead it’s a half step, some caller pissed him off talking about how we have the best rotation and frankly I agree w/ SAS, the guy was talking about this rotation being the best in the MLB , the record doesn’t show that and they struggle to get to the 5th inning at times so that claim is false.

I’m not fanning more fire on Torre I believe he’s done and his decisions have shown that this season and last season.

  72. randy l

    murphydog,
beckett isn’t the same pitcher when he has to overuse his fastball to keep the blister problem at bay. i couldn’t find that neyer article over at espn, but it makes sense he can’t go 200 innings with blister problems. the pitcher i’m hoping comes back to earth is wakefield. the knuckleball comes and goes. let’s hope it goes for a while.

on a different note, the yankees still aren’t a cutting edge conditioning team. at this point in the season maybe it doesn’t matter because the players are playing themselves into shape finally. i think giambi is so tight he’s going to overstretch something whenever he plays in the field. heel spurs are usually a symptom of a tight aging body.glaus for example has a heel spur and a hamstring problem. just one part of the body isn’t usually lacking flexibility. it’s usually all the connective tissue when an athlete hits a point in their career. i was all for playing giambi at first before, but not now. i think he’s done in the field even occasionally unless he wants to risk injury.

  73. yankeefaninwoosta

Stephanie A. Smith is a total duchebag. He thinks he knows everything about everything. He misses his girlfriend AI being in Phili. ESPN needs to lose him.

Does anyone else miss Harold Reynolds BTW? I don’t know exactly what he did, I know it was construed as sexual harassment, but I really liked his baseball insight.

  74. Drew

Jeff NJ – good point…maybe they would drop Veras.

jt – he started today for Scranton, but was pulled after 1 inning.

  75. Drew

yankeefaninwoosta, Steven A. is amusing, but knows nothing outside of basketball. My ears bleed when he talks baseball.

  76. Doreen

    Kate –

I listen to those same shows. And sometimes I’m in the car when Charlie Steiner has his show. It’s the only one that I’m not that crazy about, not because of the guests, but because he’s so pompous, and he runs the same viewpoints in the exact same language to everyone—cliche phrases and the like.

    David—
Sirius and XM will be merging in the not-too-distant future, so you will get baseball, and I, unfortunately, will get Howard Stern. (Yuck!)

  77. Brandon

    and it is official

Radio announcer said Clipp is headed north. (Even though NY is east of Scranton I thought

Tyler Clippard to Queens vs the NY METS

  78. Mike

Anyone hear anything about Clippard? I’ve been watching it on Gameday and my heart dropped.

  79. yankeefaninwoosta

Maybe he does know basketball, but he is an arrogant prick. Whenever he is on the sports reporters sun am, i immediately turn it off.

  80. Brandon

He’s alright he pitching vs the NY METS on Sunday

  81. Mike

YESSSSSSSSSSSS! I’ve been waiting for the kid to get his chance. I hope he never throws another minor league inning (haha, very optimistic)! Good luck Tyler!

  82. Jeff NJ

Think he’s worth picking up in fantasy leagues? I don’t think he’ll get too many starts, but he very well could pass DeSalvo. Nice kid by the way, I met him in Nov. He even didn’t mind taking a picture on my camera phone of me and Phil Hughes.

  83. saucy

nice, now we can go for the record of most ML debuts as a starting pitcher in a single season. whatever that now stands at…

  84. murphydog

    randy1:

The Neyer article was an ESPNInsider piece so it’s not on the free website. I clipped the one sentence tease.

I think with players staying in the sport longer there are some very different conditioning needs and goals for them as opposed to the 20 something crowd. Much as I hate to admit it, my eyes started to go exactly on schedule, almost overnight. My vision was great and one year later, not so great. There was much denial, but it was no use.

I think the conditioning industry has to step it up and find new answers for the older athlete. It takes exponentially more work to get the same result after, say, age 35. Giambi also has special circumstances given his prior use of, ahem, “supplements.” Perhaps Damon hasn’t gotten the point. There’s working hard and then there’s working smart. They have to be aware of their bodies’ changing needs and change workouts they have done the same way their entire careers up to this point.

  85. Chris NJ

Drew, Clippard was pulled after one game, but not because of ineffectiveness. Which I think is what you’re leading everyone else to beleive.

And just so everyone knows, he pitched 1 inning, no hits, no runs, 1BB, and 3Ks on 24 pitches, 12 of them strikes.

  86. Asst Manager

The Anti Cano stuff here is laughable. I’ll take it with a grain of salt because it’s the same people who Boo’d Mariano, Jeter and A-Rod.

  87. randy l

    murphydog-
i get insider and i still coudn’t find it. i’ll check again. giambi also has a big body that seems to go downhill faster in baseball. he’s probably going to be a 100 game a year player like glaus from this point on in his career. not the end of the world because dh is the one place the yankees can plug a lot of people into.

  88. Chris NJ

pl, you know how some peoples numbers dont indicate how good they are? A la Jeter? Yeah, well, that is the opposite for Farnsworth. I don’t care how good his numbers are, he is shakey and scarey and capable of giving up the lead in every outing no matter how big of a lead the other team has.

  89. Jeff NJ

Man if Clippard comes up our vaunted Triple A rotation will be completely decimated. If I remember before the season, the 5 Scranton starters were to be 1.Phil Franchise, 2.Humberto, 3.Ohlendorf, 4.Clippard, 5.Rasner, DeSalvo or Jackson. Jackson would be the only one still there.

  90. Matt (another one)

If the rumours about Clippard are correct, I’m tickled. How long has it been since we’ve really gotten a good look at our minor league pitchers?

I have a slight issue with the kid making his debut in a nationally televised game against the Mets, however. No pressure or anything…

Anyone know how to pronounce his name? Is it CLIP-erd or clip-ARD? Either way, “The Yankee Clippard” has a nice ring to it, eh?

  91. Drew

“Chris NJ May 17th, 2007 at 1:16 pm

And just so everyone knows, he pitched 1 inning, no hits, no runs, 1BB, and 3Ks on 24 pitches, 12 of them strikes.”

Don’t know if you meant this for me, but I didn’t say he was pulled for ineffectiveness. I said I thought he was getting promoted, which he is.

  92. Doreen

    murphydog—
I think you’ve got something there. There do need to be different conditioning programs for older athletes. THAT would be really cutting edge!

And I sure hear you concerning eyesight—I was quite proud of the fact that most of my friends’ eyes were, shall we say, “going,” and mine were perfectly fine. Until the day they weren’t. Seriously, overnight! Cool thing, though, I don’t have to wear bifocals because I wear contact lenses—one for distance and one for close! It’s weird, but it works.

But I digress. Glad to hear Clippard’s getting a shot, and they won’t be messing around with Wang’s rest.

  93. stuart

Wow…. another young guy even if it is for 1 start.. they will either send down rasner or desalvo after there start.

    they have some young arms….

to bad sanchez got hurt he has big upside and really good stuff. anyway give us an idea what to expect from clippard???

  94. Jake

I’ve had London Calling in my head for the past hour.

The Scranton Yanks rotation has relocated to the Bronx.

  95. Chris NJ

Drew, I never said that you said that, what I ment is that by reading your comment, I think other people might think that you ment he was being pulled for ineffectiveness. That’s what I thought until I checked for myself. That’s all I was saying.

  96. Brandon

    Jeff NJ

    —————————————————————————
Jeff our AA and AAA staf is stacked if Clip goes up most likely Alan Horne or Jeff Marquez goes up, ofcourse there’s also Ian Kennedy.

  97. Mike

Clippard has a nasty hook, but his fastball is very average. He’s going to need to improve his command if he plans on being a successful ML pitcher. He’s been a strikeout pitcher every step of the way, and like Hughes, he’s very young. I am rather high on the kid, but many believe that he doesn’t have the pure stuff to become a good pitcher at the Major League level.

  98. Bill

Jake- Can you read my name correctly or is that asking too much of you? Obviously, its asking too much.

Also, assuming I’m obsessed with the Sox bc I asked what their SP would be against the Yankees is pretty stupid of you.

  99. Jonathan

The Clash Rock!!!! The Sex Pistols can’t sing at all. Where is Briton and Henn. Villone is washed up. Bruney is our best RP now.
I don’t mean to shout while we were talking I saw Joe Torre nodding out.
