The Yankees split a doubleheader with the White Sox thanks to Chien-Ming Wang and some rediscovered offensive pop in Game 2.

Mike Mussina was thrown off schedule and didn’t like it. This notebook also has information on Roger Clemens, Kei Igawa and a rare home run for Bobby Abreu.

Headed down to the clubhouse now. Back a little later with the lineups. The Yankees weren’t leaving their hotel until 9:45 a.m. The second bus was after that.

I really like Moose, and I appreciate the fact he’s honest about his needs as a pitcher. But holy jezuz, MAN UP! This whole must-stay-on-5-day-schdule thing is just getting stoopid. Yeesh.

  2. Hawk

Yeah, really. It’s the length of the National Anthem, or the rain, or the schedule, or A-Rod’s defense, or or any number of other excuses this guy has offered us over the years.
This team doesn’t need it’s best guys offering excuses to why they aren’t doing what they’re supposed to do… just man up already, Moose!
Not that he pitched bad, but really, just take credit for the loss and tip your hat.

  3. david

He alreay has his excuse when he loses to Boston on Tuesday since he will be on 5 day rest.

  4. DKA

Mussina also wants those pesky kids off his damn lawn….

Mussina has a two-year deal, or a year with an option for a second? This may make for some interesting moments.

Headline: Mike Mussina was thrown off schedule and didn’t like it.

Now you know why Piniella hates pitchers (and catchers apparently).

  6. Tim

I’m so sick of Moose bitching and making excuses if his schedule is thrown off.

He’s a veteran pitcher who should know by now that this game is full of uncertainties. If Phil Hughes had this excuse, I could cut him some slack, but after this many years in the league he should know how to adjust to his outings.

Mike needs to grow up and stop making excuses.None of us wants to hear it.Id love to see him say that with Bob(or Kirk) Gibson in the room

  8. DesignatedBlogger

Mussina is going to make one crotchety old man. I can just see him in the retirement home. “Today is supposed to be meatloaf day! Who changed the menu? Now I won’t be regular this week!”

  9. Cesar

Boy, you talk about Torre coddling A-Rod last season, this guy Mussina gets coddled as much as any player I’ve ever seen. What a diva.

  10. LathamJoe

Wah, Wah, Wah…Grow up Mikey and start acting like a Team Player instead of the wuss you’ve been for the past 7 years!
Chrissakes, the guy is getting ace level salary!

  11. The Lady

This is why David Justice threw him under the bus last night on the postgame show. They showed Mussina making his rain comments and then Lorenz asked Justice about it. Justice said we’re seeing a pitcher in the twilight of his career and that’s the reason he didn’t pitch well, not because of the rain or his schedule.

  12. EV

You’re all hysterical. Mussina’s last two starts were on extra rest, and this one was supposed to be on extra rest as well. A week is way too long for any pitcher. And did you all miss the part where he said “he just didn’t have it”? He didn’t offer excuses. They asked him outright about the delay.
I cannot STAND when people sit here and tell players to “man up”. We are not talking about Carl Pavano here. This is Mike Mussina – the same guy who in 2005 pitched with freaking tendinitis because he was the only starting pitcher that wasn’t injured. Or have you all gone senile and forgotten that already?

  13. Yankee DG

Maybe Moosey can go with Roger to Houston on his off days and get a little R & R?

  14. LathamJoe

Baloney! Plenty of ptichers (BTW making much less than $17 Mil per year) pitch with assorted injuries and keep their mouths shut to the media. Mussina is a talented pitcher, but a whiney one.

  15. wood is good

EV, how many times has Moose bitched ‘n’ moaned about being “off his game” because of too long rest, too short rest? Four, five years? I’m not questioning his abilities, I’m questioning his tired reasoning.
