Rasner to miss three months
The bad news just mounts for the Yankees. Darrell Rasner will need surgery on his finger and will miss at least three months according to Brian Cashman.
He will have surgery tonight or tomorrow.
I’ll be back later with Joe Torre’s postgame press conference.

I’ve never seen anything like this injury streak. It’s like the baseball gods are really angry about Rocket coming back, Giambi’s steroids and A-Rod’s contract.
Never thought that I’d be so concerned about the loss of Darrel Rasner. Kei Igawa needs to get his shit together, and fast. I don’t know if Clip is big-league ready.
Just another stroke of bad luck for the Yankees. I can’t recall a time when I’ve seen so many pitchers getting hurt with balls hit back through the box…especially the Yankees. Last year it was Wright and Pavano, this year it’s Karstens and Rasner.
Wasn’t Rasner slotted as the long guy? Who will fill his spot now…does this signal the return of Igawa in the long role out of the pen?
Rasner would be perfect as the long guy in the pen. Oh well.
The Yankees rotation for the next 20 games (my guess):
Clippard tomorrow 5/20
Mussina/ Wang/ Pettitte vs. Boston 5/21-23
OFF DAY 5/24
Clippard/ Mussina/ Wang vs. the Angels 5/25-27
Pettitte/ Clemens/ Clippard or DeSalvo at Toronto 5/28-30
OFF DAY 5/31
Mussina/ Wang/ Pettitte at Boston 6/1-3(no need for Clemens)
Clemens/ ???/ Mussina/ Wang at Chi-Sox 6/4-7
OFF DAY 6/8
Clemens/ Pettitte/ Mussina vs. Pittsburgh 6/9-11
Wang/ ???/ Clemens vs. Arizona 6/12-14
(Clemens avoids the Mets as well as the Red Sox i.e. media circus at both games.)
The two ??? starts 6/5 & 11 should be made by a minor veteran starter acquistion like Paul Byrd if not Paul Byrd.
Just someone halfway decent for 3-4 starts until Hughes returns say around/ on 6/20 (he got hurt 5/1, reports said 4-6 weeks so is 6/20 a little longer than 6 weeks unreasonable?)
I meant “The Next 23 Games”. ‘Sorry bout that.
What is Hughes target return date? Anyone?
Hughes will probably be ready by mid to end of June.
This is getting crazy.Today was a bad break we should be even in this series after scoring 7 runs.I hope George doesnt do something stupid like fire Torre I think that would have a bad effect.Something needs to click here and soon but sometimes its not meant to be.Helton isnt the answer either.
So the Yanks pay clemens $28 million and then the rotation sets up so he misses the sox and the mets. Yea, that makes a whole lot of sense. WEll not much the yankees do makes sense anymore. What a joke.
paul byrd would cost too believe it or not. I agree w/ the idea though. Maybe Josh Towers or Tomo Ohka could be that guy. I wanted them to get BK Kim personally, but it’s too late now for Kim. As far as the rotation goes: If T-Clip does resonably well tomorrow, he should get Friday’s start. If he does bad in either or both starts then DeSalvo is the 5th starter. Some Vet as Long-man and starter on May 28 (No need to rush roger).
Pitching Staff:
Wang
Pettite
Mussina
Clippard/Vet/Clemens on June 4
DeSalvo/Clippard
Best case seniero(sp) is that Clippard does well as the 5th starter, and DeSalvo does well in the spot starts in Clemens comes back, and then moves in Long-man
Bullpen:
CP Rivera
SU Proctor
SU Bruney
LOGGY/mop up Myers
MRP Britton
MRP Farnsworth
MRp/LRP Villone
The fox people mentioned that Clemens now has the highest contract in baseball. A-Rod’s contract states that the yankees can prevent him from opting out of his contact if they increase his salery by 5 million or 1 million more than the highest paid player. So my question is: could they increase his salery from 27 mil. anually to 29 million anually, or does the contract state that they have to go by the highest of the two?
If they dadn’t scored those 7 runs in the final 2 innings i would have set that Toree would be a lock to be fired. So, do you guys think he’ll still get fired? I think there’s a 50:50 right now that he get fired, if he does get fired Giaradi better be his replacement
The Minky/Phelps platoon just doesn’t make sense. The whole point of Minky is to have GG Calibur defense at 1B. They choose to go w/ Defense rather than offense at 1B, something I agree with. Then when they have Phelps play vs. LHP they sacrifice defense for offense. But they should either have Phelps as the full-time 1B w/ Minky as defensive replacement. Or go w/ Minky vs. RHP, and ANDY PHILLIPS vs. LHP. Andy plays pretty close to GG Defense at 1B. Thus we would have GG D vs Lefties and righties. Phelps may have built up enough value for an NL team looking for a bat off the bemch, and should be traded.
Luis Vizacino should also be traded. I was all for having him around until the all-start break, and have him increase his value and then trade him. But I don’t think he’ll ever increase his value. If we had Britton pitching instead of Vizcaino today we MIGHT have won 7-6. Vizcaino’s just costing us games. Teams will also have SOME interest in him, becauce of his tract record of being a solid Middle reliever. They might figure he needs a change of senery.
Myers also meeds to start getting lefties out more consistently(sp). Or it may be Sean Henn time again.
tract=track and in=until
Hey JL
Real slow, o.k?
Clemens starts at Toronto 5/29 because
1. he started yesterday
2. he’ll probably start for Trenton 5/23
3. he would be in line to pitch for the Yanks @ Toronto 5/29 4. the Yanks will need a starter 5/29
5. the Yanks have Mussina, Wang, and Pettitte in Boston thus 6. they don’t need Clemens or the media circus in Boston.
Clemens’ second start is in Chicago 6/4 because
1. that’s when his next start would be
2. he’d be pitching on an extra day’s rest w/ the day off
5/31
3. Chi-Sox is a weak-hitting team
His third start is against the lousy Pirates 6/9 because
1. the Pirates are lousy (I don’t care if they’re doing good this year, historically they’ve been lousy so I want a dominating/ strikeout pitcher against them).
2. he can dominate them.
His fourth start would be against another lousy team Arizona
6/14. I know AZ is doing o.k. this year but again, it’s another recent times weak lineup I want Clemens to face.
You see, Clemens vs. Toronto, Chi-Sox, Pittsburgh, and Arizona makes wayyyy more sense than Clemens vs. Boston (media circus, his first start of the year, at Fenway, who knows if some lowlife Red Sox fan perhaps like you would throw something at him or attack him?), Chi-Sox, Arizona, and the Mets (another media circus).
Ever heard of Mussina, Wang, and Pettitte? The fifth starter is drawing whoever he draws, but I don’t see a fifth starter in my rotation vs. Boston next week, so s.t.f.u.
first of all im not a low-life sox fan. I’m a mets fan just trying to have a conversation about baseball but get called names for bringing up a simple idea. you’d just think the yankees and their fans would like to see clemens walk into fenway and shut them down for a few innings. I mean, that’d make me feel btter about my chances than seven strong innings agasint pittsburgh.
No Paul Byrd. No veteran washed up pitcher. Let the kids learn and take their lumps. Suck it up and let the kids get experience.
Let’s face it. Forget the now because there isn’t much of a now right now. Look to the future.
I’d rather see Chase Wright as a lefty long man than Villone, and Henn over Myers. Wright and Henn may have futures. Villone and Myers don’t.
Time to look toward the future and use players who have futures.
It says something about this version of the Yankees that they’re running scared from the notion of Clemens in Fenway. What is the point of signing the guy if he can’t pitch against your main rival?
This has really turned into one of the more screwed up franchises.
And I have no doubt that Clueless Joe will remain at the helm of this sinking ship even if the Mets complete the sweep tomorrow evening. George must really be ill to let this kind of embarassing play go by with no consequences.
Oh yeah. Come the deadline, be SELLERS and look for prospects instead of being buyers of 30 year olds.
See what various contenders needs are and sell OLD for young and rebuild.
“I’d rather see Chase Wright as a lefty long man than Villone, and Henn over Myers. Wright and Henn may have futures.”
Wright’s only MLB future would be setting more humiliating records. People really have to watch the games. Hughes showed potential. Wright, Karstens and DeSalvo are duds. Rasner could maybe be a long relief guy, but nothing more. We’ll see about Clippard…
Just because a pitcher is young doesn’t mean he has potential. Most of the young guys the Yanks have brought up have very limited potential. For example, DeSalvo will give many more starts like the one in Comiskey due to that ridiculously bad delivery (and which was pointed out by a number of posters here).
It’s tough to be a seller when you have a host of LT contracts with NT clauses. I agree though on not signing Byrd or pitchers of his ilk. Give the rookies a chance, let them grow.
“Oh yeah. Come the deadline, be SELLERS and look for prospects instead of being buyers of 30 year olds.”
Fine to be sellers, but not fine to let the idiot Cashman pick up cripples (like Sanchez)or duds (like Ohlendorf) in return.
Cashman has already failed. Bring in some new blood.
True, but let me ask you this…
would you rather be a .500 team with a lot up players who are 34 and have no upsides but only downsides
or
would you rather be a .500 team with a lot of players 23-26 who have upsides?
I’d rather have the upsides and get rid of the over 30 deadwoods.
BTW, Realistic, have you actually checked out what Wright has done at Scranton since going back down? His ERA is under 3.00. He went 7 2/3 good innings tonight and his AAA ERA is 2.93 after 0.90 at Trenton.
Need I remind you that Glavine went 7-17 in 1988 or that Maddux went 6-14 in 1987? Sometimes you have to suffer with a youngster for a year or two and show patience. Don’t damn Wright after only 2 starts.
I’d rather see Wright…who is still young and has potential and may have a future
than see a 37 year old Villone who never had much of a past.
yankee 21 makes sense. Which I why I hate the big $$ long term deals.
It gives you no flexibility when the time has come to dump them. No one wants them at that price or contract.
Get some kids who are hungry and have something to play for (their own big future contract) rather than fat cats content to sit on their wallets.
I was sick with the way the mets fans reacted when Rasner was hurt. They started chanting yankees s*ck after it happened that wildly cheered when he left the mound. Very classy.
Thank goodness this happened in may, before the Hampton season began!!
can you imagine trying to find a good orthopedic surgeon during the summer? as if!!!
You weren’t “trying to have a conversation” and I didn’t call you a name. I meant “like perhaps you” as in perhaps you might be a lowlife Red Sox fan who’d throw beer on Roger while he was doing his pre-game warmups. You know what I’m talking about. Now I know what team you’re a fan of thus where your little potshot at the Yanks is coming from, thanks. Oh b.t.w. “2000″ hahaha.
I want maximum wins in games Clemens pitches hence Toronto, Chi-Sox, Pittsburgh, and Arizona. I’m not into the “whtie knight” and “face the best” b.s. The Yankees don’t need Clemens to come in as the white knight to “walk into Fenway and shut (the Red Sox) down for a few innings”. They have Wang, Mussina, and Pettitte who are perfectly capable of doing that vs. Boston and the Mets.
We need seven strong innings vs. Pittsburgh from anyone, but I want Clemens to pitch against them cuz they’re just the type of team for the Yanks to steamroll thus gain momentum. They can pump up Clemens and that’s a good feeling you want to have. I’m a big believer of putting people in comfortable situations until they have to really deliver. See, Clemens isn’t pitching to go 3-0 or 4-0 in the regular season vs. the Red Sox. He’s pitching to help the Yanks get into the postseason and win it all. THE LONG HAUL OF THE SEASON.
Oh b.t.w. what if the Yanks don’t want Boston to actually FACE Clemens? Boston deliberately started Matsuzaka vs. N.L. teams only during spring training so no A.L. team would actually face him before the season began. Smart move by the Red Sox, the Yanks should follow suit.
When you’re reeling like the 2007 Yanks are, the last thing you want is “7 strong innings” from Clemens at Fenway -but the game is tied 1-1 cuz Curt Schilling is opposing him. The Yanks could still lose the game on one swing of Big Papi’s or Manny’s bat off some reliever, or one error, any fuck up. So Clemens pitches 7 IP with 12 K but leaves the game tied 1-1, Yanks lose 2-1 on a reliever blowing the hold or Mo blowing the save. Big deal about Clemens. It means nothing and it’s demoralizing to the team. You want that hahaha whatever. Pettitte’s last two starts have been brutal because he pitched very well in them, well enough to win most games. You have to tell the rest of your team they need to play as one without a white knight, and they don’t need to be told that at all. They don’t need a white knight vs. Boston. Bottom line hey have to make the postseason this year as division winner or wildcard. If the Yanks have to face Boston to get to another World Series, so be it. I’d rather they see Clemens for the first time then.
Next time you come on here, say why it’s a “joke” that Clemens doesn’t face Boston or the Mets. I’ll give you one very good reason: media circus. These guys are human, too.
Clemens should be clear of mind thus of bullshit press conferences, interviews, and opposing fans looking to throw shit at him.
B.t.w. Mets fans should be very worried about this year not the Yankees who caught an awful break today cuz your team better win it all. Kicking ass in the regular season is one thing, kicking ass in October is another. Your hyped up team living up to it so far better go all the way. The 2002 Yankees were GREAT, better than your team, but got their asses handed to them by the Angels. Alot of people forget that the Yanks were down 1-2 to Cleveland in the 1998 A.L.C.S. Game 4 of that series was the biggest pressure any team could face, but El Duque came through. He may have to do that again -can he? You also better pray you don’t face Atlanta in the N.L.C.S. again cuz that’s constant underside to your team’s history that won’t go away. I mean, they still have Smoltz, Hudson’s a damned good starter. I’m not up on them much but they’re right there with the Mets as I type, they never seem to go away. They still have the Joneses. Your team better win it all this year.
jennifer-
where were you sitting??
Hey “realsiticfan”
Boston didn’t have Matsuzaka The Great face a single A.L. team in spring training, so you ought to point fingers at Boston for deliberately babying him. I don’t see starting Mussina, Wang, and Pettitte vs. Boston as babying Clemens. If anything, the pressure’s on them to help sweep Boston next week which they will have to do to make a bit of a dent. Wang got his ass kicked by Boston. Mussina hasn’t faced Boston yet. Pettitte got his ass kicked by them last start. They’re just as responsible for the 2007 Yanks fate as Clemens or any other Yankee.
The Yanks wouldn’t be scared of the notion of Clemens in Fenway. Neither would I. I just don’t want the media circus and possible shenanigans by Red Sox fans like the asshead Red Sox employee who bothered Jeff Nelson during the 2003 A.L.C.S. The dick who tried to slap and/ or pour beer on Sheffield at Fenway’s little league RF fence. The bastards who threw so much shit at the Yanks one time last year, the Yanks had to leave the field. The judge who tried to haul Nelson and Garcia into court. Fenway is a stupid place full of stupid people, I don’t want dumb shit in Clemens first start cuz I guarantee you Yankee Stadium will be behaved next week when Boston rolls in.
I just watched it, they were clearly chanting Yankees s*ck. I wasn’t at the game.
The way things are going, Clippard better wear a suit of armour Sunday night.
I think the Yankees shouldn’t have anymore fox games. Last fox game Jeff broke his leg, this one Ranser broke his finger.
It’s the Curse of Carl Pavano. Did he do some voodoo on the mound Opening Day????
Anyone else find it ironic that young pitching is supposed to keep injuries at bay, yet we’ve had three rookie pitchers go down? We’ve just been incredibly unlucky.
