You want baseball stories? We have baseball stories …

In the Sunday baseball notes we take a position-by-position look at the Mets and Yankees.

Meanwhile, in Game 2 of the Subway Series, the Mets beat the Yankees again, 10-7. Brian Heyman has the story.

At what point could this mess cost Joe Tore his job? That’s the question now.

Tom Glavine won his 295th game despite not pitching his best. Rod Boone has that story.

David Wright broke out of his funk at the right time for the Mets, John Delcos writes.

The Yankees need these games more than the Mets do. But it didn’t look that way, as columnist Rick Carpiniello points out.

Darrell Rasner will be out three months with a fractured finger. This notebook also has news on Endy Chavez, the rotation for the Red Sox series and Jorge Posada reaching a milestone.

Willie Randolph had a big day before the game even started as he delivered the commencement address at Fordham and watched his daughter graduate. Ernie Palladino was there.

I moved this one over from the last thread:

For what it’s worth, Dan Graziano, Newark Star Ledger, has a piece in today’s paper quoting a source who talks to Big Stein on a regular basis. This is one slice:

“The person, who requested anonymity because only publicist Howard Rubenstein is authorized to speak on Steinbrenner’s behalf, said the only way Steinbrenner would fire Torre this season is if he were convinced the Yankees were out of the race. And as of now, he’s not. Steinbrenner has been citing the example of 1978, when the Yankees were 14 games out of first place in July but came back to overtake the Red Sox on Bucky Dent’s famed home run. Those circumstances were more dire than the ones the Yankees face right now, and yet that year proved retrievable.

Big Stein is also supposed to have said he does not blame Torre for the current situation.

nice article on torre pete. do you know how the rocket feels about torre being manager? would he have been less inclined to return to the yankees if someone like mattingly were running things?

nice article on torre pete. do you know how the rocket feels about torre being manager? would he have been less inclined to return to the yankees if someone like mattingly were running things? basically, would the yankees have landed rocket if a change had been made and is there a chance that they are keeping torre because of clemens?

  4. Khoa Le

great stuff murph. maybe the team’s just setting up a wonderful storyline and that we’ll all be watching this on a Yankeeography dvd sometime in the future. one can only hope.

Is the roster move today going to be Ranser to the 60 day dl, so Tyler couldn’t be added to the 40 man?

God I hope Tyler does well today, otherwise we are going to be short a starter. I also hope he is spoken to and told not to take everything on himself. He needs to go out and pitch how he knows.

  6. DesignatedBlogger

It’s still a bit early to dump Torre. I think Kevin Long will get the axe before anyone else. But if the season looks hopeless, especially by the All-Star break, I’d expect Torre to get fired and Mattingly made magager, so he can get some on the job training going into next season.

  7. Reno

I love that David Wright “broke out of his funk” by hitting two home runs off a lefty specialist that has turned the average righty into A-Rod over the last 3 years (.970 OPS against righties). It’s a joke that no one is pointing this out.

  8. jennifer

This team needs to have someone come in a get the bad karma away from them. There are too many freak things happening to them.

  9. murphydog

    Khoa Le:

I hope you are correct. The big question is who will play Bucky Dent in this year’s drama?

  10. Stuart

great.. do not fire torre or cashman.. battle and make some minor change to add to the bench and help the pen..

try to trade farnsworth and vixciano…try britton.

they need the rookie pitchers(desalvo and Clippard) for another week or so..shit…

he is crazy trade that will never happen but WTF.. Giambi to the angels for jeff mathis(catcher), and Ervin Santana..

Giambi is a DH, Matsui can share the DH with Melky yes it is a offensive hit but they get more defensive if they play melky in the OF, more speed, get a much better catcher, and a very good young pitcher..

the angels get offense, and a lefty to compliment vlad and Jason only has 1 3/4 yrs on his contract……

    You heard it here first:

Twenty years from now, it will be “A f-ing Rod” in New England.

  12. Stuart

reno they had no choice it was the 1st inning. there starter got hurt…

what do you want mariano to pitch in the 1st???

  13. Ryan

I’m curious about the rumor that the Yankees are considering voiding Giambi’s contract? Say they do, do they try to re-sign him for a lot less? Do they go with Phelps/Damon at DH? does that make it much easier to sign a CF next year? I dont think it’s the right move for them to make on a moral standpoint, but it would solve many of next year’s potential problems.

  14. CGramazio

That Graziano article really makes you feel that the onus is definitely on Cashman. Steinbrenner gave him complete control and the results have been less then stellar. Although I agree that GM firings don’t usually happen during the year, this circumstance may prove to be a bit unique, not that I think Cashman is going to get canned. This is Cashman’s team though.

I think Kevin Long perhaps being the scapegoat may be a possibility if this continues. I wonder if Paul O’Neill would make a good hitting coach. I know he has no coaching experience, but man that guy’s got some fire.

  15. Peter Abraham

There is no chance O’Neill would give up living in Cincy.

  16. CGramazio

    Just a thought.

  17. jennifer

This team has been hit extremely hard by injuries, we only have to look to our neighbors north of the border to see another hard hit. Another team that everyone had high hopes for this year. They are in the same position as us.

I’m not sure how much of this is Joe’s fault. Maybe you could point a finger at Joe’s use of Mo this year, Giving him a week off between appearances. (that accounts for 2 loses)

The only real scape goat you could find at this point is the hitting coach. Ron finally has the pitching straigtened out. I think Mike’s next start will be better than his previous. But now our hitting has gone into hiding. Hopefully last night in the pouring rain is a positive step foward.

  18. Bill

Anything new on the Giambi and contract void talk?

  19. murphydog

    Pittsburgh Yankee:

They already call A-Rod that in Boston, but for different reasons ; )

    CGramazio:

As for Long being launched, anything is possible with this record. But Paul O’Neill as batting coach? When he throws the first hard object at a player who strikes out everybody is gonna kinda realize it was a bad idea.

  20. murphydog

I’m thinking that Giambi is not the guy to make the example of. He apparently told the truth in the Grand Jury, implicating himself when no one else would say they knowingly used the stuff. Jason has also stayed clean, not failing a drug test yet. He was also Comeback Player of the Year.

Suspend Jason for repeating what we know he said in the Grand Jury and for tugging on the Commissioner’s cape? (The truth hurts, Bud). What message would that send? This one: Speak the truth and get penalized, but keep silent and they’ll let you take the most coveted record in sports.

I dare the Commish to do it. The Union would have to go nuts, tearing up all the good will in the last contract.

  21. DesignatedBlogger

Giambi didn’t tell us anything we (or the Yankees) didn’t already know. Plus, he never tested positive, and he took steroids when MLB had no policy. He’s safe for now.

  22. JEFF

LAST I HEARD ROGER CAME BACK TO YANKS IN PART BECAUSE TORRE WAS MANAGER. IF THIS IS TRUE ONE WOULD THINK TORRE IS SAFE TIL ROCKET LEAVES?

  23. saucy

Pete, I have to say I liked your position by position look at the two teams. Especially the comments on if Posada has two more solid seasons. Glad I’m not the only one thinking that…
