Jason Giambi today met with lawyers representing Major League Baseball. The discussion centered on his recent comments about steroids, not his allegedly failed amphetamines test.
It is not uncommon for such meetings to occur. No word yet on what will come out of it.
I just read about Giambi over at Highbrid Nation and the writer over there really put things in perspective for me. The media has really blew the whole “performance enhancing drug” thing out of proportion. Seriously, I’m not saying its ok to use these drugs but can we please stop acting like these drugs give athletes some kind of super human advantage over thier peers.
Now if they would only help with grammar and spelling…
So, I am sure his mind will be on the game tonight.
If Torre is smart, he sits him tonight.
Given his body of work the last 5 weeks, its clear he is neither physically nor mentally “there” to help this team win.
Just sit him, DH Damon, put Melky in CF and begin the process of ridding themselves of this guy. At this point, having Jason Giambi on this team does more harm than good.
He’s a walking, talking distraction who no longer can hit. Not exactly what the Yankees need right now.
agreed, SJ.
Noway Giambi can play tonight now. What a distraction… Great time for this.
Oh well.
Giambi will play. He’s a better bat right now than Cairo.
I think he’ll play. I think he’d rather talk about another poor night at the plate (I’m a fan, but he has been brutal so far) after the game than answer a million questions about ducking out.
Incidentally, Gammons is apparently questioning the accuracy of the Daily News report. Who knows?
Of course Gammons should question the accuracy of the Daily News Report! We all should.
Peter Gammons is a voice of reason in a maelstrom of insanity.
A couple of years ago he wrote a piece where he asked the question ( I’m paraphrasing here): “Who amoung you is so noble that you wouldn’t at least think about taking a substance to enhance your job performance, especially if you knew that your higher productivity could result in a monetary award that would not only take care of YOUR family, but generations of your family as well?”
Of course Pete’s a lot better writer than I am, but that’s the gist of what he said.
His point is that a certain percentage of people are going to act on the chance to take care of their family for the rest of their lives, even if it means cheating.
When an entire generation of players is raised in a society where doctors prescribe pills like candy for every ailment we face, no one should be surprised when someone tests positive for a drug.
I’m not condoning the cheaters at all. But no one should forget that Bud Selig & the owners fell in love with the increased attendance as home runs increased and HAD to know that these players didn’t get this big by drinking milk. So if you put yourself in the place of a player who faced increased wealth while Bud Selig and the owners turned a blind eye, you can see why some players took perfomance enhancing drugs. Giambi was right when he said that both the players and major league baseball owe the fans an apology.
MLB to Giambi:
Please don’t ever speak of the 800-lb gorilla in the room.
“I’m not condoning the cheaters at all.”
The heck you aren’t.
“His point is that a certain percentage of people are going to act on the chance to take care of their family for the rest of their lives, even if it means cheating.”
So what. A certain percentage of people steal from their employers. Using that logic, that’s okay as well.
Gammons may be a Boston guy through and through but he has a heart. I don’t agree with everything he says, but his righteous journalistic sword is tempered with a little human compassion. I think Gammons never forgets it’s a game played by overgrown boys who sometimes portray the noblest things we are, as well as the worst things we are. Costas and Joe Morgan could use a dose of whatever Peter Gammons puts in his coffee every morning.
What Giambi did was not right (using PEDs), but nobody deserves to be screwed like he was (and Bonds too) with a leaked drug test result that he had every reason to believe was confidential. Giambi didn’t write the policy, MLB and MLBPA wrote it. If some people are offended that the policy gives the players a Mulligan on the first failed amphetamine test, the remedy is not to “out” Jason by leaking his results. The snitch is as wrong as Jason was.
people questioning the integrity of the daily news and their unknown source?
what next?
saucy:
What’s next? See if anybody in pinstripes ever talks to T.J. Quinn or Mike Lupica again.
saucy:
My mistake. Farnsy will always be available for a comment.
XM radio mentioned a suspension could be looming
Mary –
I DON’T condone the cheaters! I do try to understand why it happened. If we don’t learn from mistakes then we’re bound to repeat them. All you have to do is look at George Bush for living proof of that.
