Clemens finishes up in Scranton

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on May 28, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

6 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, 6 strikeouts.

89 pitches/57 strikes.

I’ll pass along more info as it becomes available from Kevin Devaney, who was in Scranton. but it sounds like the Rocket was pretty good.

He looked pretty good but it didn’t look like he had “great” velocity though. They were talking about fastball between 84-88 mph. I suspect he will throw more than 91 or so when he gets here.

  2. Huuz May 28th, 2007 at 6:59 pm

Edwar Ramirez followed him up for 2.0 innings.

he gave a single, a walk and struck out 3 w/o allowing any runs. I’m hoping he’ll get a tryout in the bronx sometime in the next two months…he has a *nasty* changeup.

so far this year he’s been averaging ~ 17 K/9 between AA and AAA.

  3. Greg C. May 28th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

IMO Ramirez should be on the same plane to Chicago with Clemens.

  4. Greg C. May 28th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

Was there any truth to all the nonsense John Kruk was saying on ESPN about Clemens hurting his hamstring? He said Clemens limped off after one inning and then didn’t seem like he was driving off the mound with his legs.

  5. Sox Fan May 28th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

So how many games will the Yanks be out when Rajah makes his anticipated debut? 14? 15?

Great signing by Cashman and Co.

  6. 2007 Yankees May 28th, 2007 at 7:18 pm

Greg C: after his last pitch in the first, he limped off but he was fine afterwards.

Sox Fan: Did you come here to TROLL? Is there a reason you are here other than acting like an a$$? Go cheer on your team….you never know when your team will start to fall back down to earth.

  7. YanksFanLV May 28th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

I’m assuming that Ramirez is a reliever? if he is, i don’t see why they don’t bring him up.

  8. YanksFanLV May 28th, 2007 at 7:30 pm

I almost forgot, in response to Greg C. John Kruk’s opinion is worthless, he does nothing but Yankee bash all the time. If Rocket had signed with Boston or Houston, I’m sure he would be saying the exact opposite of what he is right now.

  9. Big Steve May 28th, 2007 at 7:31 pm

Clemens looked pretty good. He’s throwing a much bigger breaking ball than I remember. One thing I noticed…there were times when he seemed almost awkward on his legs. He looked like a Gramps picking up the rosin bag a few times. This could be related to the work/exercise routine he does between innings.

At the end of the first inning Clemens sort of skipped off the mound and Kruk was all over it. Kruk has been as critical as anyone about the Yankees. People love to hate.

  10. SJ44 May 28th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

He’s been walking like that for 4 years. He isn’t hurt.

Looks like he will start on Monday in Chicago.

Maybe he can restore some pride and some competitiveness to this team.

If he can do that, and help the younger pitchers, its good enough for me.

  11. Jessica May 28th, 2007 at 7:49 pm

so when does roger pitch? *Five* games from now (Thursday is a off day) will be Sunday in Boston.

I know it’ll be a circus, but I would rather have Roger pitching Fenway than DeSalvo.

  12. Jessica May 28th, 2007 at 7:50 pm

Kruk is stoned out on Slimfast©

  13. Jessica May 28th, 2007 at 7:51 pm

one final question, when Roger comes up, who leaves the rotation: DeSalvo or Clippard ??

  14. Big Steve May 28th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

Torre said his rotation was set for the Boston series, sans Clemens. He’ll most likely go the following Monday in Chicago.

  15. 2007 Yankees May 28th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

Clemens will pitch next Monday in Chicago. Boston series will have Wang, Moose, Pettitte I believe.

Clemens will take the spot whoever is least effective and right now, it’s a toss up. Who ever remains will supposedly lose their spot to Phil Franchise, when he comes back.

  16. SJ44 May 28th, 2007 at 8:05 pm

Yankees are off Thursday. Its Wang, Moose and Pettitte in Boston and Roger Monday in Chicago, if he comes out of this start feeling well.

  17. Jessica May 28th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

    so clippard pitches tomorrow?

  18. jennifer May 28th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

Is it for sure Monday in Chicago? That means i’ll be able to see him Saturday June 9th. :D

  19. 2Yankees143 May 28th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

Pettitte is tomorrow to split up the two rookies together

  20. Mike S. May 28th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

I was at Scranton. Roger hit 89-90 on the fastball. The command was good, as 57 of his 89 pitches were strikes. Only three balls were really hit hard.

I’d like to see Ramirez get a shot. I was at Scranton on Saturday also, so I got to see Edwar Sat. and today. 6’3″ 155….an usher made a good observation…compared his physique to Oil Can Boyd. Appropriate. Ramirez just needs to get a little more control from what I have seen.

Yes, LV (part of our club???) Ramirez is a reliever.

Roger was a good signing AT THE TIME. What the Yanks needed to do was hold serve at 5-6 out. They didn’t. Now of course, it’s wasted $$. His best value now is to tutor the youngsters.

Wang, Muss, Pettitte in Boston. Expect Roger Monday in Chicago. Also expect DeSalvo to go down and Clippard to stay.

  21. Mike S. May 28th, 2007 at 9:34 pm

I saw nothing wrong w/Roger. Kruk is full of it.

  22. mitch May 28th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

“Maybe he can restore some pride”

    Pride? In what, money?

Clemens is going to be rocked at the majors level. Nothing he showed tonight looked any better than a 4. He’s going to skip fenway. Wouldn’t be pretty.

  23. cjc May 28th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

    too little too late

  24. Jamie CT May 28th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Vile thing, you make my butt sting! I detest you! You’re all garbage, all of ya! Back up the truck, back it up!

  25. Ray May 28th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

It will take more than Clemens to save the Yankee Titanic ship from sinking even further!

  26. Offense?? May 28th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

At this point, who really cares about Clemens.

  27. gargoyle May 28th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

    can they trade clemens?

  28. stuart May 28th, 2007 at 10:14 pm

why can’t the ybring up Britton?? What has this guy done wrong???

    Vizciano sucks.

7 BB tonight from the stellar pitching staff on the other end our patient hitters got 1 BB.

they are a joke, make moves.. bring up young guys, whomever, who cares…

have some heart and pride, what a disgrace……………………………………..

    disgrace…have some fire….

  29. Brian - So Cal Yankee Fan May 28th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

This team ( and I use the term advisedly) is PA – thetic!

Have a fire sale and get rid of the overpriced underachievers (Abreu, Giambi, Vizcaino, Damon). Bring up Duncan, Britton, anyone…please!

Can the minor leaguers do any worse? At least they would hold their heads up

  30. Joe Santorsa May 28th, 2007 at 10:32 pm

I was in the stands tonight at PNC Field and I can tell you the Rocket was brilliant. But, from a longer range view, Ed Ramirez is a kid the Yankees can use very soon, maybe tomorrow! He has a very good changeup that he throws at at least three different speeds and combines it with a low 90′s fastball. He is small (he can’t weigh 70 pounds), but he gets K’s. I saw him on Saturday as well as today and both times he showed poise with runners on base. He’s a keeper.

  31. Chicago Dave May 28th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

Where did Ramirez come from? Has he been in the Yankee farm system all along, or did we acquire him from some other team?

  32. Joe Santorsa May 28th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

    Promoted recently from Tampa.

  33. Stormy May 28th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

“one final question, when Roger comes up, who leaves the rotation: DeSalvo or Clippard ??”

Not only has DeSalvo been bad in his own starts, but he was bad in Clippard’s start too. Torre took Clippard out early and put in DeSalvo and DeSalvo couldn’t get an out. If Torre leaves Clippard in that game, maybe the Yankees win.

Clippard is going to have to basically have his arm fall off not to stick over DeSalvo. DeSalvo’s only fan was Torre, and now I don’t think Torre’s opinion carries much weight.

  34. Chicago Dave May 28th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

So, Ramirez was originally scouted and signed by the Yanks?

  35. Drew May 28th, 2007 at 10:51 pm

I love how the team completely rolled over and died since he announced he was coming back. The are 7-13 since his big announcement. He won’t make a lick of difference.

The only good thing is that it’ll be nice to watch him pitch again.

  36. Chicago Dave May 28th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

Here’s a thought…If the Yanks keep losing, don’t you think they would DL Damon and Giambi (and maybe Vizcaino, too) and start calling up some youngsters to take their places for the rest of the year? At any rate, I’d certainly like to see that happen…even if the kids struggle, it would be refreshing to see some new faces in this tired old lineup.

  37. Chicago Dave May 28th, 2007 at 10:56 pm

“I love how the team completely rolled over and died since he announced he was coming back.”

Notice that the team has also continued to tank in a big way since George’s big statement. When is he going to blow his stack already?! I mean, I know he’s old and mellow now, but he can’t be THAT old and mellow, can he?!!

  38. Rocco May 28th, 2007 at 11:21 pm

go 35-15 in the next 50 games then go from there….

    i can dream right?

  39. Michael in Chicago May 28th, 2007 at 11:38 pm

Pete, you need to fix your headline. I think what you meant to write was:

CLEMENS FINISHES UP IN SCRANTON AND REALIZES HE MADE A BIG MISTAKE SIGNING WITH THE YANKEES.

    Got your back, bro.

  40. Mike S. May 29th, 2007 at 6:11 am

Ramirez was given up on by the Cubs and Angels. He is 26, and in various leagues over the past couple years has averaged anywhere from 13 to 17 K/9 Ip. He has 42 K in about 22 IP this year. He was at Tampa last year (4-1, 1.17) and started at Trenton this year before a callup to Scranton. His ERA for this year is somewhere around 0.45-0.50.

  41. Mike S. May 29th, 2007 at 6:12 am

Yes, George is that old and mellow.
