Pregame chatter: The Yankees held a 41-minute team meeting before the game. Joe Torre would not directly discuss what he said. But he made it clear that what level of anger or frustration there is should not change the performance on the field. “I don’t think we’re as relaxed as we have to be,” Torre said. “Self-confidence is a big part of this game.”

Giambi is out of the lineup because he is slumping, not hurting. … Scott Proctor (stomach disorder) is out. He must have watched tape of yesterday’s game. … The dome is open.

Update 8:48 p.m.: Good meetings, fellas. … Matt DeSalvo needs to be designated for assignment again. His last three outings: 8 innings, 13 hits, 10 earned runs, 9 walks.

Update 9:50 p.m.: Sorry for the lack of updates, shaky wireless here. Suffice it to say, if Joe survives this he’s apparently bulletproof. They will have lost 5 of 6 and 8 of 11. At 21-28, only five teams in all baseball will have more losses: Tampa Bay, Kansas City, Texas, Washington and Cincinnati. That happy talk that they are better than their record is nonsense at this point.
