Clemens to start on Monday

Peter Abraham

Joe Torre just told us that the plan is to have Roger Clemens start against the White Sox in Chicago on Monday.

The Yankees did not want to bump Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Mussina and Andy Pettitte out of the Boston series his weekend.

Clemens will throw a bullpen session today and probably another on Friday or Saturday.

So the rotation will be Wang, Mussina, Pettitte, Clemens, and probably Ty Clip at this point. Not bad. Now the hitters need to loosen up and not try to pull everything. That and maybe get a few calls from the umpires.

  2. Joe Monte

Hopefully Clippard gets to pitch more than 70 pitches on Thursday. You might as well let these young pitchers get experience b/c this team has a big hill to climb even if they get back over .500 w/ Cleveland / Detroit / Boston performing well so far this season.

  3. Ian

Dumb dumb. Why give him $28 million and not have him pitch against the Sox. Moose looked awful with no velocity the last time he pitched against the SOX.

Personally, I think Roger’s throw day in Boston will be IN the game. I think him coming in and pitching 1 inning would be great.

  5. Doreen

It has to do with regular rest for your starting pitchers.

  6. Dewey

Will Roger be joining the team over the wkd in Boston, atleast? Maybe his presence will boost the team to take 2 of 3.

  7. Chuck

I have said this since they signed Clemens — they never wanted Clemens to pitch his first game against the Red Sox. That would have been stupid. If they could have started him this week (before Boston), they would have. There is no reason to raise the emotions unnecessarily. For Clemens, it is still extended spring training and getting clobbered by the Red Sox would have been a physical, psychological and emotional set back for the Yankees and Clemens. If he doesn’t pitch well against the ChiSox, it is only a physical set back that can be blamed on the fact that he has only pitched three minor league games so far.

Despite anything Cashman or Torre said three weeks ago, neither of them wanted Clemens pitching in Boston.

    Chuck,
Is Clemens 18 yrs old? He’s a big boy for crying out loud!!

  9. Neil

hey jimmy, clemens is a human being after all

  10. Chuck

It has nothing to do with Clemens being a “big boy.” He is coming back quickly and emotion is a big part of baseball.

Regardless, I was just voicing what is clearly Torre’s way of doing business.

“That and maybe get a few calls from the umpires.”

At this point if you’re blaming yankee problems on the umpires you know nothing about baseball. In fact, you probably shouldn’t be using a computer. You might hurt yourself.

i wouldve bumped mussina i hate our chances with him going against the sox

So does this mean Clemens first start at the Stadium will be 6/9 vs. PIT?
