There is plenty of blame to go around for this mess. Cashman, Steinbrenner, bad luck, etc. http://valentinesviews.blogspot.com/2007/05/blame-game-plenty-of-targets-to-fault.html

The Yanks' pitchers are 25th in walks per 9 innings and 30th (LAST) in strikeouts per 9 innings. Last year they were 10th and 19th, respectively. Under Mel Stottlemyre, they were 9th in walks allowed and 16th in strikeouts in 2005, and 4th in walks allowed and 15th in strikeouts in 2004. Guidry is not getting his guys to command the strike zone the way Mel did. (While there are a lot of kids on the roster right now, keep in mind those 2004 and 2005 pitching staffs had a bunch of stiffs that Stottlemyre taught to command the zone.)

If we are talking Yankees mistakes, under-bidding on Matsuzaka and over-bidding on Igawa might be up there.

Its time to actually blame some of the players.. Kevin Long the hitting coach isn't in the batter's box, they players are.

Myth: Fire Kevin Long, the hitting coach must be at fault.

Reality: The Yankees are fourth in runs scored in the AL, sixth in batting average, 4th in OPS and third in OBP.

In the past 30 days, the Yankees are 8th in runs scored, 7th in OPS, and 5th in OBP in the AL. In other words, they're falling. I'm not saying it's Long's fault, just saying the Yankees offense is not performing. Of course, that's obvious just by watching them.

Mientkiewicz's SLG is .381 and his OPS is .683. Amazingly, he's hitting better than Damon.

Let's assume the Yankees fire Cashman in November and do not give Torre a new contract. How difficult would it be to attract a new GM? Are there GMs or top assistant GMs out there who are scared to come to NYC because of the owner and media pressure? Perhaps a few but I think there would be many more who say "I want a job where I have $180 million to spend".
Also are there any GMs not working who could be signed? I am thinking about guys like DePodesta and Dan Duquette. I am sure the old boy network of Bill Madden, Mike Francesa, etc would have a coronary if they were hired. But they did do good things before. Consider John Schuerholz in Kansas City. Starts off bad trading for old guys, decides to give youth like Saberhagen and Jackson a chance and they luck into a championship in 1985. Then he makes bad mistakes like trading a top pitching prospect in David Cone for a back up catcher, signs Cy Young reliever Mark Davis when he has a good bullpen, sings Storm Davis giving the usual BS about "he's a winner..ignore the high ERA, run support and low innings per start". His team has the highest payroll and a lousy record getting Schuerholz fired. So naturally he ends up in Atlanta with a perennial loser and builds the greatest regular season team in history.
I think keeping Cashman is more defendable than Torre. He has tried to keep the Yankees on top while rebuilding the farm system. Most of his deals at the time (weaver, Vasquez, Pavano, Contreras) were logical at the time. Perhaps it's "Yankee legends as coaches" who are to blame. Or simply bad luck. This franchise has for years had "put those magical Yankee pinstripes on and become a winner"..O'Neill, Maris, Brosius, Stengel, Gabe Paul.

Reality: despite the offensive stats listed above by Pete, the Yanks are dead last in SA and OPS in close but late situations.

I suggested a few weeks ago that the Yankees are a different team (especially offensively) when on the road. Everyone jumped down my throat.

Those of you looking at the schedule should spend less time evaluating who they are playing and more time on WHERE they are playing. This team needs a right handed bat (Sheffield was a force), or they will continue to struggle on the road, regardless of the opponent or the starting pitcher. Those Yankee lefties need the home crowd and the short porch to be effective.

So look at the Yankee schedule the way you look at a college basketball schedule, where adequate teams lose on the road and win most home games. This Yankee team isn't built to travel - the stats already bear this out.

I've seen countless Red Sox teams built to "hit the (left field) wall," and they stunk. I know the symptoms.

Peter Abraham will never call for anyone's firing because if he did word would get out and he'd lose his pipeline to Cashman. His "Torre and Cashman can do no wrong" stance is purely from self-interest.

Just admit that Peter and then you can cease spinning it 357 ways 'til Sunday why these overrated men should not lose their jobs.
