Thompson on the way

Peter Abraham
May
31

Kevin Thompson was a late scratch for Scranton tonight and is on his way to Boston to replace Jason Giambi on the roster.

Thompson is hitting .260 with two homers and 17 RBI. Scranton. He was with the Yankees from April 9-24, going 2 for 8 with two RBI.

Had a chance to speak with Brian Cashman. He said Giambi would not need surgery but is expected to miss at least a month. Only rest can fix what he has.

Cashman would not rule out Giambi missing the entire season, but that seems unlikely.

It also seems possible the Yankees could send out Matt DeSalvo and bring Chris Britton back for at least the weekend.

Chris Britton is the right answer for the pen.

I am looking forward to the days when the Yankees will be unburdened by the types of contracts/performance represented by Giambi, Damon and Mussina. Thankfully Unit and Sheffield are already gone…..

  2. Art Vandelay

Yes, and thankfully Abreu and Igawa are here

  3. Matt

Well, at least the DeSalvo situation has been addressed.

  4. Jeff NJ

Sheff would be nice to have right now.

  5. randy l

“He originally was diagnosed with a bone spur and switched to shoes with orthotics that he said relieved the pain. Giambi then hurt the foot more severely when he homered in the seventh inning Tuesday night.

“Rounding the bases he felt a pop,” Cashman said. “There wasn’t a tear before. Now there is.”
..and now there is. it seems cashmans’s motto is to play em till they break.
right now he’s probably figuring out a way to rush hughes so he can blow out his arm compensating for his left leg.
does he wait for posada to break down from having to play so much because the back up catcher is so bad? sure why not . preventable injuries are to him just bad luck.
giving cashman 100% control is 100% stupid.

  6. Matt

    And Farnsworth. And Pavano.

  7. Josh

at least desalvo would go out, i really cringe when hes pitching. Clippard i dunno about yet.. i cant tell what kind of future he will have

  8. knucklehead3k

please, can we put a nail in the bernie williams coffin?
he was a good – not great – player over the years.
to me, i was a big bernie baseball fan until after the yanks won the world series. (remember those days?)
anyway, bernie was a free agent and the big question was whether he was going to return.
rather than say he was a yankee and all, he said he wasn’t sure about his future and all.
just say you’re a yankee, especially at that time, with thousands of cheering fans on hand.
and then, he plays the red sux card and george steps in at the last minute and offers more money to keep him.
i know it’s a business, but if burnie bled yankee blue, he would never have made the flops a suitor.
since then, i’ve viewed him as a decent player with a weak arm who never ever used his speed to his advantage on the bases because of a lack of fundamental baseball knowledge.
as for the current situation with the yanks, they should have dropped torre at the end of the season.
since the 2001 playoffs and that loss to the angels, it looks like the yankees have largely been sleepwalking, other than against their arch rivals in beantown.
i like torre, but the team needs a motivator, not someone who looks like he’s a beaten man.
obviously, pete deals with him every day and all, but i just see a need for some new blood.
to be clear, i’m not laying the current situation at big joe’s feet solely, but he’s part of a larger problem.
with all of that said, i still think with the pitching staff and the obvious talent, the yanks will pull off the wild card and make some noise in the playoffs.
maybe none of my arguments make sense, but that’s just one knucklehead’s opinion.
    have a good night.

  9. Basura

randy l seems to have a lot of hate. I hope your venting here makes your life more pleasant.

  10. randy l

    basura-
i hate things that screw up the yankees. how about you? you like how this season is going?

  11. Doreen

Randy 1 is just very passionate about what he sees as a deficit in the Yankee organization, specifically, mistreatment of injuries and poor conditioning of the athletes.

  12. casey

I wouldnt mind Teixera or Helton right know. Prefferably Tex

  13. the todd

casey believe me u dont want helton, he has more money on his contract than giambi … and thats saying alot … as for teixera, i’d love to have him but i think texas would ask for too much in return, they’d want pitching and probably some outfield prospect … i wouldn’t trade tabata for him or hughes, maybe a package around melky but thats doubtful

  14. YanksFanLV

Put the Helton talk to rest, trading for him would be a disaster.

  15. randy l

    doreen-
basura is right that i’m pretty annoyed about things. it’s frustrating when there are things that you can see ahead of time (like giambi’s heel) and the yankees just act like amateurs in dealing with it. you followed the heel problem from the beginning so you know the yankees handling of it was very strange. it was like they had never seen or heard of heel spurs before.
on a positive note, dhing should be good for damon. bringing up thompson will shuffle the deck and give the team some more speed.

  16. joe

uh texiera will require a trade. he isnt a free agent until after next year I believe. therefore it will take names such as hughes, kennedy, chamberlain or tabata to get him. I aint making that trade.

Helton may not require as much to get him. but he has been a bit injury prone and his power has dropped severely in the last couple of years and he plays in colorado. I wonder if he no longer is getting chemical help.

We DO NOT need an all star at every position. the world series teams most certainly did not. brosius, girardi, and an ever revolving roster of left fielders and second basemen, and DHs.

minky hit close to 300 in may and I dont know how to calculate the runs he saves at first. he isnt the problem

  17. EricNS

Abreu will be gone at the end of the year – his option will not be pcked up or at least I hope not.

  18. Joe

I think it’s time to go out and find a bat. Not a star, but a bat. Get me a professional hitter like the following; Matt Stairs, Scott Hatterburg, Mark Loretta, Marco Scutaro, Tony Graffanino, Kevin Mench, Geoff Jenkins, Scott Spiezio, Frank Catalanatto, Rob Mackowiak. Any of these guys who strengthen the bench and they all play hard and I’m sure they all can be had.

It doesn’t need to be an All Star, but it needs to be someone who is going to have quality at bats, bring some new blood into the dugout. This team is stale. They’ve all seen one another fail in the clutch too often.

Cashman has NO EXCUSE as to why this bench is so poor. He needs to get a backup C who they can trust so Jorge can DH during this Giambi injury a lot more and he needs to get some quality veterans for the bench. Get Ausmus from Houston. He’s old, he’s gonna be a free agent next season and he doesn’t hit much, but he handles a staff very well and Pettite and Rocket love him.

Cairo is not a quality vet anymore. I think he’s there because they all like having him around more than what he can do for this team (which is nothing). We don’t need a fun guy in the clubhouse. We need guys to help the team win.

Teams that are falling out of it are more than willing to trade veteran role players. Why we can’t acquire one or two is ludicrous.

And as for Bernie, if he can get in shape in a couple of weeks and show he can hit? They should bring him back. He’d be a welcome presence over the steroid fading broken down Giambi who I hope is done for the season. At least Bernie tries and plays with heart and can deliver a clutch hit.

But I do think this team needs new blood and some new faces in the dugout. In the long run, it needs to be some youth, but for this season I think it needs to be veteran role player guys who play hard and take the game of baseball seriously. There’s only a few guys left on the Yankees who know anything about playing hard. They’re the one’s who are hitting and not making excuses.

  19. the todd

no way abreu’s option will get picked up … not the way hes playing now, not worth 16 or 18 million, however much it is …i really would like to see ichiro out there for the yanks

  20. Matt

joe, Doug Mientkiewicz hit .265 in May. He got on at .320. That’s unacceptable.

  21. Global Warming

It’s about friggen time Britton is up.

Cashman DFA Vizcaino and keep Britton up permanently.

  22. chisnld

i don’t care what any of you think, i like dougie on this team.

he saves runs on the field, plays hard, and does get and rbi every now and then.

  23. Stuart

Igawa’s contract is $4 mill a yr.. at this point a joke but nothing like the giambi, damon, abreu, moose, etc level.

abreu will be gone at the end of the yr that is $15 mill…

Question Ramirez is totally dominating in AAA, how good is he? When you dominate like that don’t you deserve a promotion?

Britton does deserve his chance, he is 24 and I think he has a chance…..

  24. Matt

thats certainly your prerogative, chris. I’d rather a first baseman that contributes.

  25. casey

    I’d love to see Ichiro

  26. No longer a fan of Bush league reporters.

I read Minky has a .295 for May.

Great, Kevin Thompson. What happens when KT comes up?? He sits on the bench and does nothing. Plays the 9th inning or pinch runs. Totally useless. We have 5 outfielders now.. wonderful. Just what we need.

    Cashman = moron
Go 2008 Yankees with a new GM and Manager!!
By bringing up KT, it just shows how little depth we truly have.

  27. Matt

Mientkiewicz in May: 18 for 68 with two HR, six doubles and five walks.

    .265/.320/.441

    Over the last 2 weeks

    6 for 31 .194/.286/.355

    Over the last week.

    2 for 16 .125/.176./.125

Horrid doesn’t even begin to cover it.

  28. YanksFanLV

I would rather have 5 outfielders than 3 first baseman.

  29. Jim Clark

When you read things like “Cashman would not rule out Giambi missing the rest of the season but that seems unlikely”, then you KNOW we have seen the last of Jason the Juicehead this season. Good. “You have sat there far too long for the good you have been doing for you to sit there anymore. Depart I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go (And take Carl Pavano with you)”–Oliver Cromwell.
Avoid Todd Helton (and any other big-contract-quick-fix) solutions at all costs. Bring back Bernie Williams!

  30. Stuart

no Bernie and definitely no Helton.. Helton would be insanity(doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results)…he has like 7 yrs. left on his contract, that is insane..

5 OF’s is normal for all teams but the Yanks… the reason they have or had 3 1B is because of Giambi’s issues..

wHINER WHAT DO YOU WAnt them to Start Thompson?/He is a bench player for a reason, he will get some AB’s and if he he takes advantage of them he will get more AB’s that is how it works……

  31. Jeff NJ

Should have brought up Shelly Duncan. Oh well, guess Melky plays everyday from now on.

  32. the todd

shelly duncan is like 27 … theres a reason hes still in AAA … hes doing well down there with some HR’s but hes nothing more than what phelps brings … thompson has speed … he can play all the outfield positions …

can someone please tell me why they want to bring bernie back ? please ? i dont know if u’re saying it as a joke or just to annoy people but its getting annoying, back up your points dont just say, yankees suck, cash blows, bring bernie … that is ridiculous …

he wouldn’t do any better than what minky is doing, atleast he is a great defender.

  33. No longer a fan of Bush league reporters.

Please get off of this Helton thing. Just cause you heard a rumor doesn’t make it a good thing.
The rumor is also way off base and has zero truth to it.

We don’t want Helton. He is signed till 2012. TWO THOUSAND TWELVE. You all bitch about long contracts on older players, and yet GIMME HELTON GIMME HELTON.
Texiera was mentioned somewhere and every is all GIMME TEX GIMME TEX.
    SHEEP.

Tex is not leaving the Rangers. The Rangers are not going to trade him. He isn’t a free agent till 2009. They have no reason to trade him, nor does he want to go.

Be realistic. Ichiro isn’t going anywhere if the Mariners mgmt think they still have a chance. It they are out of the wild card race by ASB, then expect to see talk of moving Ichiro or a extention signed with the Mariners. I do think he will go to the Red Sox and Coco will be traded elsewhere soon after.

Yankees don’t really have anyone to trade off without giving up the farm and we honestly don’t have much.
Melky is a good trading chip. Farnsworth is a good trading chip. But we can’t deal away relievers if we don’t have anyone to take their place. So it is nice that Britton will be given a chance. If he does well, expect to see Farnsi or Vizcaino gone in late June.

  34. Matt

Bernie Williams has never in his life had a year as hideous as the one Doug Out is having. I think its fairly certain he would be better that Mientkiewicz. He’d have to actually try to be worse.

  35. Global Warming

Edwar Ramirez is 6″3 155 pounds.

And I thought Tyler Clippard was a pencil out there on the mound.

  36. Matt

We don’t have anyone to take Farnsworth’s place? There’s no one in the organization that can go out there every other day and fail at their job?

  37. Matt

Sounds like a strong breeze could knock Ramirez over.

  38. Global Warming

Sorry for the double post but,

No longer a fan of Bush league reporters–Your wrong about Teixera. He’s a free agent after this season is over and I hope the Yankees do everything in their power to get him. A guy going into his prime who can field and hit. Perfect.

  39. Deep to Left

Tex is NOT a free agent after this season. He is a free agent after 2008

  40. No longer a fan of Bush league reporters.

Also, expect Damon to get traded. He has a no trade clause but has a list of 12 teams he could be traded to.

  41. Global Warming

And yes your right he doesn’t have enough ML time, doh.

  42. Tom

Is there any way we can get Placido Polanco? All that guy does is get on base. I’m not familiar with him playing the outfield but he can certainly play the infield positions and actually provide a reliable bat off the bench, which he’s been accustomed to doing over the years. He’s so sick money that I’m sure he’d be better in the outfield than Cairo. Any idea how attached the Tigers are to him?

  43. Rob B

    From Cot’s Baseball Contracts:

    Mark Teixeira 1b
    2 years/$15.4M (2006-07), plus incentives
    * re-signed 1/06
    * 06:$6.4M, 07:$9M
    * may earn $0.275M annually in award bonuses
    o $0.1M for AL MVP
o $50,000 each for World Series MVP & All-Star selection
o $25,000 each for Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, LCS MVP
    * 4 years/$9.5M (2002-05)
o $4.5M signing bonus (paid over 3 years)
    o 02:$0.25M, 03:$0.75M, 04:$1.5M, 05:$2.5M
    * drafted 2001 (1-5), signed major league contract 8/01
    * agent: Scott Boras
    * ML service: 4.000

It looks like he IS a free agent after this year. Unless I am interpreting that wrong?

  44. Matt

    http://tinyurl.com/2to2oh

“Teixeira will get $6 million this season and $9.4 million in 2007. He will turn 26 in April and is not eligible for free agency until after the 2008 season.”

  45. Rob B

You’re right, just read on Cot’s that a player has to have 6 years MLB service time to become a free agent. Too bad.

  46. Matt

“Is there any way we can get Placido Polanco? All that guy does is get on base”

His career OBP of .345 disagrees.

  47. Carson

Ichiro is NOT going to Boston. They have a prospect (Jacoby Ellsbury) they are very high on that should compete with Crisp for the job next year. He plays almost exactly like Ichiro, relying on his speed, defensive skills, and ability to get on base. They don’t need 2 Ichiros.

    SJ 44,

Have you considered starting a blog? You have some very good info/thoughts on the Yankees’ minor league players, and I’d love to be able to read it without having to dig through a 100 comments.. I’m sure others would love to as well.

  48. Tom

Well if you’re looking to go all MLB.com on me, you’re really going to have a problem with his .328 average and average in the mid .400s with runners in scoring postion? Not that that has been a problem for us this year…

  49. Matt

You claimed that “All that guy does is get on baseâ€?

    That is not true.

  50. Tom

Let’s nitpick all day long…point is he’d be a huge asset, no?

  51. Unionville, CT

Was that Brunney at the Pistons/Cavs Game…they showed a guy at the end who looked just like him and had a tatoo on his arm

  52. Matt

I don’t know. 6 of his ten major league seasons he’s been a negative. He doesn’t get on base. He doesn’t hit for power. And those are the numbers he gets with regular play. His numbers off the bench are rather poor, and Cairo is actually better.

  53. Matt

I certainly hope Bruney is in Boston.

  54. Unionville, CT

I know, but it looked just like him…maybe he’ll be on the cover of the Post tomorrow….

  55. Steve

anyone notice that ian kennedy dominated again tonight. 7innings 2 hits 0 runs. why hes isnt at AA is beyond me. i think shelly duncan should be given a shot. he provides some pop in the bat that we are desperately missing without giambi/sheff

  56. StandingO'neill

Wanted to throw this trade idea out there, seeing as this is Giambi to the DL, Damon to the DH spot makes this trade idea valid.

Now we know the Phillies want relief pitching, and were rumored to be willing to trade Aaron Rowand for Scott Linebrink. Now I don’t know how they feel about Farnsworth, and he does make a lot of money, but instead of asking for Jon Leiber(which a lot of people on here have suggested) what about Aaron Rowand. Now that Damon is hurting, I wouldn’t mind having a guy who can really cover some ground. And since the money could be an issue, instead of picking up part of his price tag, maybe they’d take a guy like Melky or another B level prospect (Chase Wright?).

Britton can replace Farnsworths production and Rowand allows Damon to DH consistenly while Giambi is out. Rowand doesn’t hit a ton or make a lot of money, but his defense is fabulous, and he is right handed which is something else we need in our order.

I usually hate when people post trade proposals, but I just want to float this scenario out there, any comments?

  57. Matt

That was the rational behind promoting Andy Phillips. “pop in the bat”

We soon learned there was a reason he was in his late 20s in the minors.

I suspect its the same reason Duncan is

  58. Sleepy

    WE WANT BERNIE!!!!!!!!!

  59. Matt

Part of the problem there is Johnny’s numbers make him a positive in CF. Damon as the everyday DH (instead of sporadically or out of necessity) isn’t as effective.

  60. Sleepy

no one wants a pitcher who gives back to back to back to back homeruns…..

  61. James Nordon

Whoever says they’d prefer Sheffield now…would you prefer him in 2008 and 2009 too? That’s how long we’d have to have him, since he wanted an extension.

Instead of sending DeSalvo down and calling up Britton. How about calling up Shelley Duncan who is hitting a ton in AAA?

  62. joe

    re: five outfielders.

Uh Cashman is RIGHT on this one. I would assume that Damon and Matsui are going to pick up the majority of the DH at bats with Melky playing the outfield. That accounts for ALL the outfielders on the roster. If someone gets hurt during a game and they didn’t bring up an outfielder then either Cairo would have to play out there, or they would lose the DH. Neither is a palitable solution.

I know it has become fashionable to bash cashman on this board but lets be fair and think before we slam him. I’m not saying he doesn’t make mistakes, he does like all GMs, but he didn’t this time.

  63. Matt

Didn’t we have a team option on Gary Sheffield?

  64. nettles

Sleepy, re the Bernie comment: go back to sleep.

  65. James Nordon

We did have an option on Sheff, but he made it clear he wanted 2 additional years if the option was picked up.

Rather than deal with that Cash moved him, and rightly so even if we didnt get an immediate return.

  66. Matt

“We did have an option on Sheff, but he made it clear he wanted 2 additional years if the option was picked up.”

    Or what?

“Rather than deal with that Cash moved him, and rightly so even if we didnt get an immediate return.”

Hey. We got the next Jaret Wright.

  67. Sleepy

yeah forget about bernie we have doug m. , nieves, phelps, and miguel cairo! woooohoooooo!

  68. James Nordon

Im hearing nice things about Whelan and Sanchez, while hurt, was in the Top 100 prospects from Baseball America. While it remains to be seen if they will pay off, Id rather have them in the system than Sheff complaining all through 2007. Plus there was no place to play him anyway unless Abreu was traded. The OF is full as is the DH slot with Giambi’s rotting carcass.

  69. Matt

I could give a flying crap if Gary Sheffield was Jack the Ripper if he hit 35 HR with a .900 OPS. I would have stuck Giambi’s carcass at first base and hoped for the best. He doesn’t hit when he plays DH anyway.

It would have had the added bonus of not bringing in Mientkiewicz.

I just get very annoyed when I look at the return on the Johnson and Sheffield trades. We got the change at the bottom of someone’s pockets and a guy with a gimpy arm.

  70. James Nordon

    Gimpy leg…Sanchez hits 98mph ;)

  71. James Nordon

my bad its a gimpy arm :)

  72. Deep to Left

    Matt,

Giambi played TWO games at 1B this year. In his 2nd game at 1B, he hurt himself, and this has led to the DL stint he’s now starting. Your suggestion to play him at 1B everyday makes no sense.

  73. Annie Savoy

Now that we all know what kind of person Arod really is on and off the field, we know why he is shunned by his teammates.

I would not be surprised to have Roger Clemens request the return of Bernie Williams to the team now.

  74. Steve

sheff only wanted an extension if he were to play first base. he wouldve been happy to play outfield if we picked up his one year option

  75. Russell NY

Pete – I like the idea of bringing up Britton. However, having only one big bopper in the lineup concerns me. If they arent posing much threat, do you think the Yankees will go out and try to find a semi-threat for DH or 1B? Not someone like Todd Helton, but a Ruben Sierra type deal? Or is it benefiting them just having Melky in center and Damon as DH? I like Melky’s arm in center more than Damon’s ability to track the ball down.

  76. knucklehead3k

sheff broke down for most of the year last year and is 38 going on 47.
add the fact he’s a malcontent and there you have it.
he’ll be back on the dl soon enough, much like the other mercenaries the yankees keep relying too heavily on.
to me, the yanks should start reconsidering their strategy.
they are not a team, but a bunch of individuals fronting as one.
thus, the lack of concern with the mounting losses.
when all most of them – other than the captain, posada and a few others – worry about is getting paid, the attitude is who cares? where’s my check? where’s my flight to toroto and my gf?
to put it mildly, this team is quite hard to root for, but not resigning sheff, rj and those malcontents was a step in the right direction, even if it hurts their record this year.
    knucklehead3k

  77. Jeremy

So we pick up Sheffield’s option and have an outfield of Matsui, Damon, Abreu, Sheffield. Wait, that’s one too many. Giambi can’t play first anymore so the DH spot is full. Compare Abreu and Sheffield’s 2006 seasons – based on that information, Sheffield had to go.

  78. Russell NY

I like the idea of Bernie more and more now that we have an open spot at DH.

  79. knucklehead3k

    why?
as has been spelled out before, bernie is softer than a loaf of white bread.
we can do better with what we already have.
besides, i’m sure he’s having too much fun riffing with that crazy jazz that he likes to play.
    end the bernie talk.

  80. Matt

How many arm injuries do you need at 23 before you qualify it as oft injured?

  81. Adam

Bernie can’t hit like a DH and he can’t field a position. He has zero value on any team, even one playing as poorly as the Yankees. I don’t understand why people think he had a good season last year, or why they want him back this year.

  82. Adam

I think they should have called up Duncan to fill Giambi’s spot. I’m fairly certain he’ll suck, but he’s got a .985 OPS in Triple A and has hit 13 home runs. It’s worth a shot.

Also I’d like to see Ramirez get a shot in the pen soon. He probably needs more time in the minors, but that K/9 is damn impressive (33 K in 16.2 IP in Double A and 15 K in 9.2 IP in Triple A).

  83. Brandon

Matt w/ Humberto’s case he is 23 yrs. old and will be adding more speed and power on his fastball , kid has an immense arm he got unlucky sugery was needed and Dr. Andrews said he will be back stronger than ever.

When you look at it this year you won’t get the rewards for the Sheffield deal but next year and the year after you’ll see the writting on the wall of this deal.

  84. Rick

I like some of the comments on the trades that were made for shef and randy. The sheff trade in a year or two may be a good trade but will the yankees have the patience to sit and wait on sanchez I hope so.

The johnson trade was a dump. ohledorf and jackson weren’t even top prospects for arizona. Look at their numbers at Scranton. Gonzalez maybe might help. And then Vizcaino whose skills were caput a few years ago. cashman got what he could for johnson and maybe that was a good thing.

if the yankees are serious about rebuilding then maybe some more of this aging wood and malcontents should go too.

i would love to see AROD go for brandon wood in angel land.they would probably trade a top prospect and a regular major leaguer. the yankees haven’t won with AROD and they never will. wood is going to be a star but he needs some time like alex gordon.

the rest of the team has very little value:

damon is so beat up they will get nothing for him.

giambi’s body was destroyed by steroids. and his salary is crazy

maybe matsui has some trade value. but i don’t think much.

    abreu is worth nothing.

trade AROD and move on. You are not going to win this year.

I like some of the comments on the trades that were made for shef and randy. The sheff trade in a year or two may be a good trade but will the yankees have the patience to sit and wait on sanchez I hope so.
