Mientkiewicz was released from Massachusetts General Hospital today and was driven back to New York by his wife.
His biggest problem is his fratcured right wrist. The scaphoid bone is a slow healer and Mientkiewicz will be out at least 6-8 weeks. He also has a concussion and whiplash.
The Yankees believe Mientkiewicz will return this season.
Mientkiewicz received a lot of grief from fans. But starting May 1, he was hitting .278 with 11 RBI. Don Mattingly said today that Mientkiewicz was the best defensive first baseman the team has had in years.
Josh Phelps will get the spot for now. The Yankees are planning on having Johnny Damon work at 1B with an eye on him perhaps playing there regularly. But that won’t happen any time soon. As Mattingly said, “You can’t give him steak at first, you have to give him baby formula.”
