Pregame chatter: IF Chris Basak and LHP Sean Henn were called up as OF Kevin Thompson and RHP Matt DeSalvo were optioned out. … Carl Pavano, who had Tommy John surgery today, was put on the 60-day DL to make room for Basak on the 40. … The Yankees will stick with 13 pitchers for now. A pitcher, not necessarily Henn, will be bumped when Roger Clemens is activated. … The Yankees are 0-7 against lefty starters in road games this season.

Basak is a nice story. He’s a 28-year-old career minor leaguers who is from nearby Joliet, Ill. He played college ball at the University of Illinois and was drafted by the Mets in 2000. He spent seven years in the Mets organization but never got close to a call-up.

UPDATE, 8:27 p.m., end of first inning: Hey, a 3-6-1 double-play, what a concept. No doubt Keith Hernandez Phelps makes that play though.

UPDATE, 10 p.m., start of the seventh inning: Impressive hitting by the Yankees thus far as every starter except Melky has either a hit or RBI. Abreu has now been on base 15 times in the last five games. He is 9 of 16 with six walks and four runs scored.
