I received my second e-mail today from somebody claiming that the defensive ststs show that Josh Phelps is a better defensive first baseman than Doug Mientkiewicz.
Seriously, just say no to drugs.
Phelps has played 56 career games in the major leagues at first base, 25 of them with the Yankees this season. A total of 370.1 innings. Mientkiewicz has played 896 games at first base, a total of 6,303.1 innings.
No defensive metric alive can match up two samples of such unequal sizes.
Beyond that, just watch the games. Or go by what Don Mattingly says. “Guys play first, Doug is different,” he said Saturday at Fenway Park. “He knows the position and makes plays other guys there can’t make or don’t try to make.”
You take the stats. I’ll go with Don Mattingly.
