Yankees waiting to make first pick

Peter Abraham
June
7

I saw many mock drafts that had the Yankees taking Florida 1B Matt LaPorta. So much for that, he went 7th to Milwaukee. Why they took an advanced college hitter with Prince Fielder already at 1B, I have no idea.

The Yankees could get a break and get one of the northeast high school RHPs fall to them. We shall see. I suspect they will take a college player, however. They need immediate help at several positions.

I find it amusing that Steve Phillips is analyzing the picks for ESPN. The Mets had a series of awful drafts and built a terrible farm system on his watch.

We’re getting Porcello. I know it. Yanks told him

  2. Michael

    Well if he keeps dropping

  3. Gayle

It as just as amusing as hearing him talk about Arod and the new York papers. How quickly everyone forgets his issues with the tabloids when he was the GM.

  4. SJ44

If they get Porcello, its like New Year’s Eve for the Yankees.

That would be the best news all year for them at any level of that organization.

Plus, you get the added fun of sticking it to Bud Selig when you go over the slot to sign him.

You can see Peter Gammons beginning to sweat right now with the prospect of Porcello going to the Yankees.

Would make my day before going off to see Joba Chamberlain pitch tonight.

  5. Kyle Litke

I don’t think needing immediate help matters. Whoever gets drafted wouldn’t be up tomorrow…in the very best possible case you might see them for a couple games in September, in which case the Yankees either already made a comeback or are in deep trouble. And I’d like to think the Yankees would correct the problems for next season, to a degree at least, without having to draft college players now. The Yanks have the money to not need to be concerned about that.

That said I don’t mind drafting college players at all, I actually prefer it usually, but if there’s a great high school player available, I’d rather see them taken.

  6. rbj

The number of players who go straight to the big club and stick around is very small. The draft is for 3-4 years down the road. Still hope the Yankees get a decent catching prospect.

  7. Michael

I hate the Brewers for that

I can’t imagine Porcello falling this far

  8. SJ44

Yes. This isn’t about “immediate help”. When I hear so called “experts” on TV or the radio say that, I cringe.

It shows they don’t know what they are talking about.

Its about taking the best player available and stockpiling as much talent as you can. That’s how you build a successful minor league system with the options to do numerous things.

You can package players for established major league stars, or use the players to help your own team.

Either way, the key is to take the best player available and not think about immediate help. If you do, you invariably end up having bad drafts.

Like Steve Phillips did with the Mets.

  9. YankeesLuv

Steve Phillips as a baseball expert, ROFL! too funny!

  10. Wolf In Pinstripes

Well, as much as it sucks for us, Milwaukee played a smart hand there. Having Fielder allows them to use LaPorta as a huge trade chip if they sign him. Plenty of teams can use a stud first base prospect right now, the Yankees not being the least of them.

  11. Wolf In Pinstripes

Steve Phillips is the kind of guy that makes me want to just walk out on the street and punch the first person I see.

  12. SJ44

LaPorta is a one dimensional player. More DH than first baseman.

Its a strange pick for the Brewers because LaPorta is going to have to hit with power very early in his career to have any value (trade-wise) to them.

He stuggled last summer in the Cape, using a wood bat.

He can hit but, he isn’t the 7th pick in this draft, IMO.

Its a football draft term but, I believe the Brewers “reached” with that pick.

  13. Dr. Acula

I find it amusing that Steve Phillips is on _ESPN at all_

All the ridiculous trades and failed signings: Vaughn, Astacio, Burnitz, *Benitez*

He consistently failed upwards, just like the what’s his name in white house

Phillips musta gone to prep school with the head nerd in charge at ESPN

  14. EricNS

Thanks for sticking it to Phillips the A-Rod hater – one thing though did he draft Reyes and Wright?

  15. kidjock

What are the chances that Porcello gets past Detroit? He is the only guy I know in this draft, and this feels silly because these guys are all 2-3 years minimum away, but getting Porcello will make my day so much better.

  16. Dr. Acula

What’s it like to be Peter Gammons?

spend ya whole life “fluffing” up Baa..ston.

choke after choke after choke. Whinining and crying.

Treating their best players like crap: Rice, Clemens, Vaughn, Manny.

I mean hata’n on the Yankees is like hating America. That’s right, the Yankees ARE America.

  17. Mo

They will get Porcello, Brackman, or Harvey, and the big club is heating up. Life is getting better.

  18. Michael

What are the chances that Porcello gets past Detroit? He is the only guy I know in this draft, and this feels silly because these guys are all 2-3 years minimum away, but getting Porcello will make my day so much better.

    I heavily doubt it

The Yankees will probably get Harvey now

  19. Michael

he gets past detroit hes ours

  20. Patch

Through the 25th pick, Porcello is still available.

  21. Adam

Please pick Porcello or Harvey. Either one of those guys and I’m happy with the first round.

  22. Michael

im not gonna lie im nervous

  23. Adam

Ending up with a guy like Brackman now would be a major kick in the balls.

  24. Michael

    come on

  25. Lori

ok – no surprise there. Darn.

  26. Matt

    well… Tigers got Porcello fellas.

  27. Mo

    Crap

  28. Justin

    that hurt

  29. kidjock

Detroit, just like I thought. Oh well, who’s the next best 1b left?

  30. BX 12 Fordham Road

    damn Tigers.

I hope Boras does not give them a reach around….

  31. mel

In the immortal words of the White Sox announcers, “He go-un”.

In other news, Schilling perfect through 4. Sox are alive and kicking.

  32. SJ44

Bummer. Detroit is the one team I was worried about with Porcello. They will sign him because they invest well into their farm system. Dave Dombrowski really knows what he is doing.

Still several good arms out there for the Yankees. Harvey and Brackman among them.

  33. Adam

Damn. The Tigers are going to have an amazing rotation in a couple of years. Bonderman, Verlander, Miller, and Porcello.

  34. Adam

kidjock, you don’t draft in the MLB based on need. The Yankees will not be picking a 1B here.

  35. Mo

    Harvey. Please.

  36. Matt

My guess is we go with Matt Harvey

  37. Mo

    Was Smoker taken yet?

  38. Michael

    Now either Harvey or Brackman

    I`d take Harvey

  39. Wolf In Pinstripes

This Ben Revere kid that Minnesota just took would have been a nice pick for us if he had hung around until no. 94. I read an article on him in our paper here in Lexington, KY (where he is from) a few weeks ago and he sounds like a stud. Tons – I mean _tons_ of speed, hits for avg and power both, and is a relentless hard worker. I had forgotten about him until I saw them take him just now.

  40. Michael

Porcello was the one. Him and hughes together.. oh well lets tak smoker or harvey

  41. SJ44

This isn’t the NFL. You draft based on need, you aren’t employed long as a farm or scouting director. You draft the best available player.

This is where the Yankees money can help them. Players who should never be available become available due to signability issues. The Yankees don’t have signability issues.

The Yankees have no problem going over slot. They have done it consistently the last two years. If they are able to get Harvey or Brackman they would be getting Top 10 talent at #30.

They have a few other ways they can go and still be in good shape at #30.

Also, the baseball draft has a lot nuggets in later rounds if teams do their homework.

Just because the draft is televised this year, doesn’t make it like the NFL and NBA. Its a completely different animal.

  42. Adam

Why do you guys want Brackman? He’s been hurt, hasn’t lived up to the hype ever, is purely projection, and is going to want to get paid. Anyone but Brackman.

  43. kidjock

I know Adam, I was just being facetios. On the other hand, Harvey and Smoker are both available.

  44. God Save the Yankees

    In more important news:

Sean Connery said he won’t be back for Indiana Jones 4.

  45. Adam

Alright, we’re all set up for Harvey. Don’t blow this Damon.

  46. Dr. Acula

    mel-

Shrill just lost the perfect game. but he still has a no-hitter going.

    Jinx. Jinx. Jinx.

  47. Michael

Alright, we’re all set up for Harvey. Don’t blow this Damon.

    LOL

I blame A-Rod on us missing out on Porcello

  48. Bill

    Ha, Brackman.

  49. kidjock

6′ 10” pitcher with health problems? Where have I heard that before.

  50. Mo

I like it, hes more skilled than harvey. Great point by Peter Gammons actually, they did it last year with Joba.

  51. Mo

Go look at ESPN projections. Brackman is a projected 1, harvey a potential 3.

  52. Michael

    WHAT THE HECK A-ROD!!!!!!!!

  53. mel

    Dr. Acula,

Where’s Michael Kay when you need him?

  54. mel

I wonder if the Yankees have a running tab with Dr. Andrews? Sounds like Brackman will need to fix his elbow.

  55. saucy

i heard he’s running a special, 5 Tommy Johns get the 6th free.

  56. Adam

Michael, I was referring to Damon Oppenheimer, guy that runs our drafts. Not Johnny Damon.
