Game 59: Pirates at Yankees

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jun 08, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Here is the lineup:

YANKEES
Damon DH
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Posada C
Matsui LF
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF
Cairo 1B
Pettitte LHP

Pregame chatter: I’m not at the Stadium this weekend, so thanks to Brian Heyman for calling me with the lineup. As for pregame chatter, I have nothing for you except that these are the players the Yankees have taken in the draft:

1. Andrew Brackman, RHP, N.C. State
2. Austin Romine, C, El Toro HS, Lake Forest, Calif.
3. Ryan Pope, RHP, Savannah (Ga.) College of Art & Design
4. Brad Suttle, 3b, Texas
5. Adam Olbrychowski, RHP, Pepperdine
6. Richard Weems, C, Columbus (Ga.) HS
7. Damon Sublett, RHP/2B Wichita State
8. Taylor Grote, OF, The Woodlands (Texas) HS
9. Austin Krum, OF, Dallas Baptist
10. Carmen Angelini, SS, Barbe HS, Lake Charles, La.
11. Isaiah Howes, OF, Louisville
12. Manuel Barreda, RHP, Sahuarita (Ariz.) HS

I believe they are through 25 rounds. I’ll update this list at some point.

UPDATE, 8:28 p.m.: The complete Yankees draft list can be found here. They took the kid from Creighton who throws right-handed and left-handed, Pat Venditte, in the 45th round. Of their 50 picks, only nine were high school players.

UPDATE, 9:14 p.m.: Miggy Cairo is 5 of 16 since he started playing every day. It might not be such a bad idea to leave him at first until Mientkiewicz comes back. Phelps is too risky to play defensively. Cairo filled in well for Cano last year right around this time. Why not again?.

Meanwhile, am I foolish enough to call another A-Rod homer here? Um … no. But he will drive in the tying run. The Yankees can’t blow another game for Andy Pettitte.

UPDATE, 9:18 p.m.: If the Yankees can’t at least tie the game here against Torres they don’t deserve to win. This is where you have to step on their throats.

UPDATE, 10:11 p.m.: So I’m at my desk at home doing some work and listening to the game on the radio. With Matsui up just now, John Sterling yells, “THERE IT GOES TO DEEP RIGHT! … oh, wait, I’m wrong. Caught by Doumit.” Nice job, John.

Meanwhile, Mariano worked 1.1 innings last night and is now entering his second inning. Either Mo has decided he needs the work or Torre has no faith in the rest of the bullpen.

This is a huge game in some regards. The Yankees will be tough to beat with Clemens on the mound tomorrow then face Shawn Chacon on Sunday. A win here and they could be looking at a six-game win streak.

UPDATE, 10:35 p.m.: Mariano Rivera’s last 12 appearances: 13 innings 7 hits, one run, 2 walks, 14 strikeouts. I’d say he’s back, no?

Is there any way Derek Jetter doesn’t win the game here? Heck, it could be a grand slam. Capps is gassed. Fourth inning in two days.

A couple of HS catchers, any word about them? Can’t imagine either of them making it to the bigs for 4-5 years.

  2. Potch June 8th, 2007 at 4:01 pm

One can only hope Romine or Weems becomes the next Posada, or at least something usable.

  3. Carson June 8th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

    Cervelli is the next Posada.

  4. DC Yank June 8th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

Did you forget about our future catcher, Francisco Cervelli?

  5. David June 8th, 2007 at 4:16 pm

Cervelli may be up by the end of next season. Definitely by the following season.

  6. the todd June 8th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

the yanks better get their check books ready … these signing bonuses could cost them about 15 million, and thats just on a few guys.

  7. Mike June 8th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

Don’t forget about Chris Carpenter, Peter. He was selected in the 18th round. BA had him ranked as the #31 prospect in the draft. If he signs, the Yanks got an absolute steal, ala David Robertson at 18 last year.

  8. Moose June 8th, 2007 at 4:32 pm

Wow, bad timing, Pete to miss the weekend that Clemens returns. Would have been great to get your inside perspectives especially on how the other players handle the hoopla (especially Krazy Kyle and Mopey Mike M.). Enjoy your days off!

  9. David June 8th, 2007 at 4:32 pm

The bonuses are part of the strategy. The Yanks aren’t worried about paying them.

  10. THU June 8th, 2007 at 4:34 pm

Who ever is running these drafts needs to be shot. they let Hevard, Robbles, St Clair, and that catcher the red sox go right through their hands. I’ve been crying for 24 hours over this draft. i had such high hopes but we end up getting brackman who might be hurt and a diabetic 3B. I’m glad we did get Carp and Peavy maybe ith their name sounding like good players we may be able to trick bavsti into giving up good players for them. Those two aremy favorites though in this draf, sadly. I can’t beleive we didn’t draft a LHP when that was cleary are needs and this draft was packed with them.

  11. Jonathan C. June 8th, 2007 at 4:36 pm

Yankees got a Chris Carpenter and a Peavy in the draft. Hopefully they live up to their MLB namesakes. Thats not asking too much, right?

  12. As I Lay Dying June 8th, 2007 at 4:43 pm

Really, how many rounds are there? 34?

  13. Mat June 8th, 2007 at 4:51 pm

The draft ends at 50 rounds or before that if every team passes.

  14. the todd June 8th, 2007 at 4:54 pm

peavy is going to be real tough to sign because hes committed to oregon state, hopefully cashman will head over to his house with a truck of unmarked bills and give him whatever he wants.

  15. Jake June 8th, 2007 at 4:54 pm

Its about time the Yanks didnt care about signing bonuses and stocked theitr system with prime talent. Its an advantage they have refused to take until the past 2 yrs.

ANyone have any sites or feedback on the bonus baby’s?

  16. I wish it was the 90's June 8th, 2007 at 4:59 pm

Anyone else find it suspect that the Yankees third round pick was from the Savannah College of Art and Design… I saw that yesterday and was sort of surprised.

    any word on the guy?

  17. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 5:03 pm

For Albany-Area Yankee fans, the Yanks just drafted Greg Holle, from CBA. Should be interesting to see if he goes to TCU or joins the Yankees.

  18. YanksFanLV June 8th, 2007 at 5:05 pm

Does anyone know if a national network is picking up the game Saturday?

  19. Jake June 8th, 2007 at 5:09 pm

No. Its a 1pm start. YES Network.

  20. THU June 8th, 2007 at 5:10 pm

Where is robbles, harvey and st clair? Wow this draft has been depressing.

  21. the todd June 8th, 2007 at 5:12 pm

ryan pope is the guy out of savannah college of art and design he had good numbers this year, 102 innings, 1.15 ERA in the NAIA which is Division II 122 K’s 16 BB’s … great control, has a low 90′s fastball and average offspeed stuff IMO the yankees are taking some guys who will be cheap and easy to sign so when it comes to the big boys, brackman, suttle, and peavey, because they are going to be tough especially suttle and peavey (the yanks would have to buy them away from college) suttle is only a sophomore and peavey has a strong commitment to oregon state

  22. Gonzo June 8th, 2007 at 5:15 pm

Any info on this Peavy cat?

  23. I wish it was the 90's June 8th, 2007 at 5:20 pm

    Sweet.

Thanks Todd…that makes a lot of sense — I didn’t think of it from that point of view.

Where do you find all this info??

  24. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 5:22 pm

Suttle is going to be a big boy to sign? According to mlb.com, “he doesn’t project much power and doesn’t run well”. “Right now, he looks like a backup or platoon-type player”. This doesn’t sound like the kind of scouting report that would be attached to a guy who was tough to sign. Would the Yankees even care if he went back to Texas?

  25. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 5:23 pm

Check MLB.com. You can watch video on most of the draft picks, get scouting reports and follow the picks live. It is completely free. If you want to pay, get baseballamerica.com. They have the best info out there, IMHO.

  26. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 5:26 pm

Not sure if this is interesting, but here is the breakdown of Yankee draft picks thus far:

    RHP: 17
    LHP: 0
    C: 2
    1B: 0
    2B: 3
    3B: 3
    SS: 4
    OF: 7

  27. Brooke June 8th, 2007 at 5:37 pm

    Albany –

I also thought it was interesting that we have taken so many RHP and no LHP. Do we have any good lefties in the minors right now? I haven’t heard of any, but I could be wrong. Are there just not any good ones available? Aren’t all of our top prospects in the minors also RHP? Just a few thoughts that I have noticed.

I understand the idea that you don’t pick based on need, because you don’t know how the players will pan out, and it could be years before they play in the bigs, but don’t we want a couple of LHP options down the line? Also, don’t we want a couple of first basemen, too, especially if Duncun is our best option right now in the minor league?

  28. Chicago Dave June 8th, 2007 at 5:39 pm

Wow, 17-zip in favor of right-handers over left-handers…Surely that’s more than a coincidence, right? By those numbers you’d think there were no decent LHPs in the draft at the later rounds, but that can’t really be the case, can it? Yanks must just really love right-handers, I guess…

  29. Nick B. June 8th, 2007 at 5:40 pm

    Albany,

Two interesting points I see there. No lefties and no first baseman. I know you really don’t draft on need as much as best player available but you would think that one 1B would be close enough at a given time to be the best player available. 17 righties and 0 lefties seems like a big disparity but there are always way more righties, just seems like a big gap.

  30. Chicago Dave June 8th, 2007 at 5:42 pm

Brooke – Agreed, a first baseman or two wouldn’t have been a bad idea! Still, the Yanks are obviously still trying to stockpile young pitchers. Heck, when you take 17 RHPs, the law of averages would seem to dictate that at least a few of them should end up panning out…so maybe it’s not such a bad strategy. Guess we’ll know if a few years’ time, right?

  31. Brooke June 8th, 2007 at 5:46 pm

    Chicago -

Actually, you make a good point about the strategy, and I certainly know less about ANY of these players than most people on this blog, let alone the scouts. It was just a concern, especially considering that most of our big names in the minors are also RHP (if memory serves correct).

  32. SJ44 June 8th, 2007 at 5:46 pm

You don’t draft based on need with the current ML roster. You draft the best player available at the time you select.

The average prospect takes 4-5 years to reach the majors. That’s too long to worry about what is going on with the parent roster.

This was not a deep draft this year. College talent is down. Which is why you are seeing so many HS players drafted.

There are about 15 really elite talents in the draft (the Yankees got one of them in Brackman).

The rest? Kids that will have to grind hard to work their way to the top.

Its the perfect draft for a team like the Yankees to take some “flyers” (chances) on some players.

Some, like Carpenter, Peavey and Suttle are talented kids.

You take the shot and see what happens. No harm done, IMO.

Also remember, you have the undrafted Latin American player signing period coming up soon. The Yankees will be very aggressive in that area, as they were last year.

  33. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 5:46 pm

I think the Yankees drafted 20 RHPs and 5 LHPs last draft. Not sure how many signed.

  34. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 5:48 pm

Baseball will eventually be 95% latino players. It just seems to be trending in that direction, despite Gary Sheffield’s absurd comments.

  35. Jeff NJ June 8th, 2007 at 5:49 pm

How is it that teams can add 50 new players to their systems each year? That’s like adding two full minor league teams. Guess there must be a lot of prospects unceremoniously cut each year.

  36. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

Not every player signs with the team after they are drafted.

  37. YankeeBoy June 8th, 2007 at 5:53 pm

And to add one point to SJ44, a lot of these kids get shifted to different positions once in the minors. So trying to draft for positional need is a moving target. You go with atheleticism and gut.

  38. Chicago Dave June 8th, 2007 at 5:55 pm

Perhaps if baseball was better about how it went marketing its product, it might be able to regain some of the considerable interest it has lost in the eyes of black players. Then again, the nature of the game itself is fundamentally different from the sports that are now beating it in popularity, namely basketball and football, so maybe good marketing can only go so far. To wit, both basketball and football are much more (seemingly) fast-paced and dynamic sports, with lots of black stars; whereas baseball just doesn’t have these elements to the same degree. I think this has a lot to do with why American minority players are turning away from baseball in droves…

  39. pat m June 8th, 2007 at 5:55 pm

I’ve seen Austin Romaine play a few times….I umpired a few El Toro games, never behind dish though….Kid has a good stick, real strong arm…….Did a early March game, and he hit everything hard….My last impression was that he could find his way to 3rd rather than behind the plate….If your’re a decent enough HS catcher and can hit, you get noticed….

  40. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

Yankees finally draft a first baseman. Luke Murton from Georgia Tech. Updated totals:

    RHP: 17
    LHP: 0
    C: 2
    1B: 1
    2B: 3
    3B: 3
    SS: 4
    OF: 9

  41. YankeeBoy June 8th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

    Chicago Dave,
MLB kinda woke up and now has a program under asst. commissioner solomon to bring baseball back to urban youth, by which they mean african-americans

  42. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

Also, Luke Murton is Matt Murton’s younger brother. Just an FYI.

  43. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 6:03 pm

Another RHP drafted by the Yankees. 18 so far. Keep stockpiling arms, Cash!

  44. L-girl June 8th, 2007 at 6:11 pm

Apologies for the duplicate comment – I posted this on an earlier post by mistake.

I’ve started a petition to tell Major League Baseball that a significant number of fans dislike interleague play and want it abolished.

Please visit Petition to End Interleague Play and read it. If you agree, please consider posting it on this blog.

    http://www.petitiononline.com/.....ition.html

Your fellow LoHud blogger John Delcos has posted it – perhaps you will, too.

I’m hoping to spread the word among serious baseball fans. I realize it may do very little, but I thought it was time we stop complaining to each other and tell management how we feel. Thanks!

  45. Mo June 8th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

Whats wrong with interleague? Every other pro league has it. I like some varied competition and the chance to see a guy like Webb or Bay or some of the young guys on Arizona, Pittsburgh, etc. I dont get the big deal. Why do they have to treat the NL and AL like totally distinct entities, it is silly. If you really care so much about it, you are being neurotic. The only thing I think may have to happen is some sort of uniformity regarding the DH. And i think the NL should adopt it. In this era, pitchers just dont waste time becoming hitters. People argue that there is more strategy without the DH, but it is silly, time wasting and boring strategy. We could also put a moat around third, and see which managers have good strategy to cross it (Farnsworth would make a good bridge). But we dont do stupid things like that because the game is supposed to be more interesting than purely strategic with an automatic out built in. So, once both leagues have the same rules, there would definitely be even less reason to get rid of interleague. As it is, i think it is good for the game, i get to see players i never would.

  46. Brooke June 8th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

    Mo-

You beat me to the punch – I was just about to extol the virtues of interleague play myself. It breaks up a very long season, gives GM’s a chance to see other players, ect. I enjoy interleague play. Also, I am complete agreement about uniform adoption of the DH – if pitchers were forced to be hitters that would be one thing – otherwise it seems they are just an automatic out.

  47. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

And the Yankees have drafted a left-handed pitcher! Tyler Herriage from Weatherford, CO.

  48. L-girl June 8th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

    “Whats wrong with interleague?”

You could read the petition. The reasons are outlined there. Don’t agree, don’t sign. But it answers your question.

  49. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 6:35 pm

The yanks gave 1 guy 25 mill to pitch in A ball. You think they care about a measley 15 mill?

  50. the todd June 8th, 2007 at 6:36 pm

if the yankees can somehow sign alot of these guys they are going to have a great short season team in A ball … the toughest signing is going to be RHP Greg Peavey. he was projected as a supplement round draft pick but fell all the way down to the 20th or so round because he is so dead set committed to oregon state … he throws low 90′s but with nasty movement. great all around high school pitcher. hes going to be expensive, but should be worth it, heres hoping cashman and co. drafted him knowing he’ll cost alot and are willing to pay and not just hoping on a miracle that he’d sign.

as for whoever asked how come there is 50 rounds … the yankees have 4 single A teams alone. they have 2 short season teams and the low A team in charleston. This is where more of the draftees will go, either to short season (depending on how late they sign) and if they sign early and they are talented enough they’ll go to charleston. some guys might go to extended spring training (alot of pitchers) to learn new pitches, new positions, etc.

  51. Mo June 8th, 2007 at 6:36 pm

And this BS about the sanctity of the world series? Please! Like when Clemens threw the bat at Piazza. Or Kenny Rogers cheated. Or when they didnt have one at all in 94? I love baseball, it consumes me, but even i know that media spectacles like the Super Bowl and WS can no longer use the word sanctity.
Finally, the unbalanced schedule thing is a crock as well. Baseball is a 162 game season, and performance is so variable and rosters shift so much that the sked will always be unbalanced. Ie if you played the Tigers early last year and the Twins late, you had a much tougher schedule than your division rival who had them at opposite times.

  52. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

A whole 95 signatures. Yup. this is gonna work

  53. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

If I’m not mistaken, the draft used to be open ended and didn’t end until every team passed. Anyone know when that rule was changed?

  54. the todd June 8th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

go NYR who did they give 25 million to pitch in A ball ? are u talking about igawa ?

  55. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 6:40 pm

The unbalanced schedule should be axed immediately. The Yankees and Red Sox playing over and over again is just about television revenue. How awesome must it be for Detroit and Chicago to have the same number of games against KC as the Yankees have to play against the Red Sox? Absurd. Spread it around evenly. I’m not really too into interleague play, but I’d suffer it if the Yanks played an even number of games against all the AL teams.

  56. RJPinestripes June 8th, 2007 at 6:42 pm

Also, get rid of the ridiculous All-Star Game! Way past it’s prime! Just have a two day break in the schedule and use the other day for make-up games! HAVE EACH LEAGUE PLAY A BALANCED (think it would be 14 games each) SCHEDULE !!!!!!! Maybe play 6 games of interleague play every 10 years or so!

  57. Mo June 8th, 2007 at 6:45 pm

I think the Yankees SOx playing so many times helps foster the rivalry. It has gotten pretty intense every year. And the Yankees also play Baltimore and TB 19 times, whereas the central teams only have one easy opponent in the division.

  58. Mo June 8th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

None of the major sports has a balanced schedule. NONE.

  59. L-girl June 8th, 2007 at 6:49 pm

    GO NYR:

First of all, it just started. It can run for a long time.

Second of all, the point is not whether you or I or anyone else thinks it’s going to work. The point is we are consumers of a business, and if we’re unhappy with the way it’s being run, we should speak up. Perhaps you prefer just to complain on blogs and message boards. I believe in going to the source.

  60. Brooke June 8th, 2007 at 6:51 pm

Since it is determined who makes it to the playoffs based on who does the best in their division, it makes since that the teams should play divisional rivals the most. If you are going to have a “balanced schedule” than just get rid of the divisions and the wild card and just take the top four teams. The status quo allows the best chance (though not perfect admittedly) for the best team from each division to make the playoffs.

Also, I personally enjoy the Yanks/Red Sox rivalries and get more into those games then I do a lot of them. IMO, the rivalries of baseball help to keep it interesting.

  61. Doreen June 8th, 2007 at 6:51 pm

The only aspect of interleague play that I like is that it gives you the opportunity to see teams in the opposite league that you wouldn’t normally turn in to see. It helps the average fan to have a little bit more rounded view of all MLB.

What I don’t like about interleague play is, for one, AL pitchers having to come up to hit in the NL park. Frankly, it’s dangerous. And it’s a lot easier for NL to assimilate to the DH than the AL to not have the DH.

I don’t like that there is an aura about the games that somehow they don’t count. Of course, they do count, wins and losses always count. But the aura is that the games are for exhibition, when they are not.

It also creates false rivalries, but that’s not too big a deal. You know it’s to make more money in the regional market. Okay. Fine. But, at least between the Yankees and Mets, those games are do-or-die, as intense as the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry (or as close as it can get), and yet you feel like those games are taking your energy and attention away from the teams you REALLY have to beat. And yet, you have to win every game. It’s just weird.

It’s all about money-making, I guess. Though, tonight, for instance, my brother-in-law is going to the Stadium, and he’s kind of excited that he’s never seen the Pittsburgh Pirates play live before. That’s kind of cool.

Basically, interleague play is not the worst thing in the world.

  62. Mo June 8th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

Great point Brooke, i didnt think of that. Yet another reason for the unbalanced schedule.

  63. Brooke June 8th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

Thanks – my dad and I have had this debate with my brother several times.

  64. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 7:01 pm

Yes, I am talking about Igawa

  65. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

L-girl- The thing is that so many people watch baseball and are fans of the game that even if you get 10,000 signatures, thats not even a fraction of the fanbase for MLB. Plus the fact that petition are generally useless and never listened to,(especially internet petitions)does not help much. You can try all you want, but there have to be real reasons to change it, not just opinions. Im sure just as many people find interleague play intriguing as those who do not like it. I would bet you anything that a stinking internet petition will NEVER work. Oh and good luck, youre gonna need it.

  66. Brooke June 8th, 2007 at 7:07 pm

    Mo –

You also made a good point about how all sports have unbalanced schedules, and for the same reason I said. Look at this year’s Bears in football. The NFC North was hands down the easiest divison, and they got to play all three teams twice, only having to face harder teams once, if at all. They were almost a shoo-in to the play-offs before the season began (FYI – I mean no disrespect to the Bears – they are my team – just stating a fact…)

  67. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 7:10 pm

and also, how do you know I dislike interleague play? I think its OK, its great playing the Mets and such as it gives fans bragging rights. There is no speculation over which league is better, as one best of 7 series is not enough to determine that. You really dont think the Cubs fans want to kill the White Sox and the Astros fans dont want to be the Rangers? Of course they do. Its part of the game, and I think its part of the game that actually helped revive it.

  68. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 7:14 pm

    Nice inning for Andy

  69. sunny615 June 8th, 2007 at 7:19 pm

    Jeez-us

how many times is jeter going to get hit this year?

  70. sunny615 June 8th, 2007 at 7:23 pm

    c’mon people – score a run!

  71. sunny615 June 8th, 2007 at 7:24 pm

  72. Paolo June 8th, 2007 at 7:24 pm

    Hip, Hip!!!

  73. Paolo June 8th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

    @*#$%*#$&%#*&!!!

  74. Jeff NJ June 8th, 2007 at 7:28 pm

That ump better give Pettitte the same big strikezone.

  75. Erick June 8th, 2007 at 7:29 pm

Maybe not get rid of the all star game, get rid of the ridiculous notion that the league that wins has world series advantage. I know it benefits the Yanks due to the recent supremacy of the AL, but it’s stupid.

The best record has home field, period.

  76. sunny615 June 8th, 2007 at 7:29 pm

    so much for that

  77. Jeff NJ June 8th, 2007 at 7:33 pm

How about the league that has the most Interleague wins gets home field? Certainly better than winner of the all star game.

  78. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 7:35 pm

Or the team with the better record gets homefield like hockey and basketball?

  79. Thurman June 8th, 2007 at 7:36 pm

I subscribe to Pinstripes Plus for events like this. They have all the top picks “Q&A” — Brackman thinks he can hit 100 on the gun but has only touched 99, Romine is the son of former Red Sox Kevin Romine, Pope compares his stuff to Tim Hudson, etc. Very good coverage and worth every nickel of the subscription….

  80. the todd June 8th, 2007 at 7:36 pm

not sure if u guys realized this but the yankees drafted right hand pitcher Pat Venditte but he happens to be an Ambidextrous Pitcher, meaning he throws lefty as well. theres some video of him on you tube, just search him. not sure if he’ll ever make it to the show, but its pretty cool to have the option to throw left or right whenever you want

  81. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

In 2001, the Yankees had a better record than the D-Backs and AZ got homefield. How is that fair?

  82. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

How does Andy look to everyone? Does he look free moving?

  83. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

Cool clip on youtube about Venditte. It is a CSTV clip. What were his stats for Creighton?

Wow this is interesting. Has there ever been a pitcher like that in the majors?? Would he be allowed to change sides in an inning??

  85. pat m June 8th, 2007 at 7:47 pm

All this chatter about The Stadium and the opposing teams being overwehelmed…Yanks lost that edge, or it’s been compromised since that late October evening in 2003 when they were shutout by Beckett & the Marlins….It’s been gone since…Oh Yeah, October 05

  86. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

I think Greg W. Harris was a pitcher for San Deigo who was ambidextrous. It was him or Greg Harris (COL ?). Not sure which guy, but he definitely had the same type of glove.

  87. Erick June 8th, 2007 at 7:50 pm

I don’t see a problem with him changing sides in an inning, I just wonder where he’d keep the extra mit. I doubt they’d let him go to the dug out nad keep changing and if it’s on the field it might become interference

  88. AlbanyYankee June 8th, 2007 at 7:51 pm

Here is the info on our lefty/righty:

2006 (Sophomore): One of three known ambidextrous pitchers in college baseball in 2006 … Had a team-leading 30 appearances last season with a 4-3 record … Pitched a career-high 62.2 innings in 2006 after only pitching 3.2 in 2005 … In his first six appearances of the season had a 0.00 ERA in 8.2 innings of work … Recorded team-leading 54 strikeouts, 61 hits, 28 runs and walked 18 batters … Saw his first action of the season against Arkansas-Little Rock (2/11) … Made television appearances on ESPN’s Cold Pizza, George Michael Sports Machine and was also featured in Baseball America … Pitched four perfect innings at Bradley (3/25) … Pitched 5.2 innings in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament against Wichita State for his longest outing of the season and for his career (5/24) … Pitched both left-handed and right-handed in 22 games … Had a 11.7 strikeouts per nine innings ratio with his left arm despite being a natural right hander … Had 12 appearances where he struck out batters by using both arms … Switched arms for the first time in his college career against Illinois-Chicago (2/17) and recorded three strikeouts … Earned MVP honors at the 2006 Central Illinois Collegiate League All-Star game … Struck out two batters left-handed before switching and striking out the last batter right-handed on 10 pitches.

  89. the todd June 8th, 2007 at 7:52 pm

erick he has one glove, its a 6 finger glove so he can wear it pitching from both sides

  90. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 7:52 pm

    Just looked on the net

    Dear Yahoo!:
Has there ever been a switch-pitcher in Major League Baseball?
    Nick
    Westerville, Ohio

    Dear Nick:
As most baseball fans are no doubt aware, switch hitters have the ability to hit from both the left- and right-hand sides of the plate. They decide where to stand based on whether the opposing pitcher is a righty or a lefty. If the pitcher’s a southpaw, the batter will swing from the right, and vice versa.
So, what if there was an ambidextrous pitcher who could give switch hitters a taste of their own medicine? As it turns out, there very briefly was. His name was Greg Harris, and in 1995, he threw one inning of shutout ball for the Montreal Expos against the Cincinnati Reds. Harris faced a total of four hitters — two as a righty, and two as a lefty (one of whom he walked).

This excellent article from MLB.com explains that Harris had a reversible glove with two thumbs that allowed him to place it on either his right or his left hand. It’s also worth noting that while Harris is the only person to manage this feat in the 20th century, there were a few “switch pitchers” who pulled it off pre-1900 and several more who reportedly did it in the bullpen (though never in an actual game

  91. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 7:53 pm

Wow i’ve never seen Joe come out of the dugout so much in 10 years as he has in the past 2 weeks.

  92. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 7:54 pm

April 6th’s New York Times has the answer. In the middle of an article about Pat Venditte, the only switch-pitcher in NCAA Division I last year, Alan Shwarz states:

“A switch-pitcher facing a switch-hitter could make a fine Abbott and Costello routine. Against Nebraska last year, a switch-hitter came to the plate right-handed, prompting Venditte to switch to his right arm, which caused the batter to move to the left-hand batter’s box, with Venditte switching his arm again. Umpires ultimately restored order, applying the rule (the same as that in the majors) that a pitcher must declare which arm he will use before throwing his first pitch and cannot change before the at-bat ends.”

  93. Erick June 8th, 2007 at 7:55 pm

OK, just saw the video, no need for two gloves, he does it just as fast as Jim Abbot used to get his glove on

  94. james June 8th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

Hopefully Hideki Matsui will have a big couple of weeks, he usually hits NL pitching they burnt his dinner

  95. Erick June 8th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

I do wonder if a switch hitter comes up and he switches… the hitter has every right to switch I guess. That could go on for a long time… playing musical chairs

  96. Colorado Yank June 8th, 2007 at 8:02 pm

Ok, it is about time to get these freakin bats going. Pettitte is doing his job

i feel so bad for andy , he never gets runs

  100. YanksFanLV June 8th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

We should be killing the Pirates right now, they are not that good!

  101. Paolo June 8th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

I have a feeling that this may be one of those games in which Andy had a nice outing but our bats were cold…

  102. Brooke June 8th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

Actually this pitcher is quite good. Plus he’s a lefty and we have struggled against them all year. We also haven’t seen him yet and that is an additional disadvantage.

I think the reason Andy always gets such little run support is that generally when he pitches we are also playing the team’s ace, so that even teams that should be easy are much harder, because we are facing a decent to good pitcher.

  103. grabsomebench June 8th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

    neither are the yanks

Third time through will be the charm

  107. pat m June 8th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

The Pirates are going to believe that they can win this game unless the Yanks do something to change that mindset…..What’s up with Jeter….

  108. Annie Savoy June 8th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

    From Today’s Boston Globe:

Boys & Girls Clubs boot A-Rod

Alex Rodriguez’s off-the-field antics are causing him problems, and we’re not talking about those silly Sox fans wearing blond babe masks. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America has pulled a TV spot featuring A-Rod because of concerns about the ballplayer’s behavior. “We are deeply concerned about the continuation of ads that might send the wrong messages to our children,” the BGCA said in a statement yesterday. The very-married Yankees star has been publicly skewered since he was snapped in the company of a buxom blond stripper while in Toronto.

  109. Thurman June 8th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

A batter is free to choose whichever side of the plate he wants to hit from with each pitch. The pitcher must declare which arm he will throw to the batter with at the beginning of the at-bat and he must use that arm for the entire at-bat.

  110. Scooter June 8th, 2007 at 8:35 pm

Abreu with an at-em ball. Been a couple of those this game

Look – Gorzelanny is a solid pitcher. The big thing? His pitch count – 87.

It means he’s probably done in the 6th inning – if the guys continue to grind at bats. Then you get to work on a weak Pirates pen

Just want Andy to hold the line here.

  111. Scooter June 8th, 2007 at 8:38 pm

By the way – this Miguel Cairo guy is handy to have around, isn’t he?

  112. Brooke June 8th, 2007 at 8:39 pm

From what I have heard this guy regularly goes over 100 pitches. We are going to have to do more grinding. I hope I am wrong. However, they do have a VERY weak pen, and their new closer who has been doing well is suspended, and they have to go to their old closer who has given up several losses this year.

  113. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 8:39 pm

Okay can we score 3 measily (sp) runs?

  114. Joe Mama June 8th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

  115. Jake June 8th, 2007 at 8:44 pm

  138. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

Global Warming- You are telling me that Mike Cameron, Johnny Damon, even Bernie have never turned outs into homeruns? At least he didnt let one bounce off his head over the wall

  139. Angel© June 8th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

What’s pitiful how the minute someone makes a bad play (disregarding all the great ones made previously) people turn up to pat themselves on the back for how ‘right’ the were about someone not being a good player.

  140. sj61* June 8th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

Why can’t this team support Andy’s good efforts on offense and defense?? This is the kind of mistake they can not afford to make, or the kind of game they can not afford to lose, given the hole they dug for themselves early in the season.

  141. Joe Mama June 8th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

There we go let’s get those runs back and some more

  142. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

Whats Pittsbughs pen situation? Jose Mesa?

  143. Joe Mama June 8th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

Melky saved the game last night when he caught that deep laser shot in that swirling wind with 2 runners on base and 1 out

  144. gargoyle June 8th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

“Whats Pittsbughs pen situation? Jose Mesa?”

Just use any lefty and you can beat the NYY.

  145. SJ44 June 8th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

Because he didn’t make one play, that means he isn’t an everyday player?

If that’s the case then, Derek Jeter shouldn’t be an everyday SS since he has makes fewer defensive plays, and commits more errors, than Melky.

I guess we forget the plays he made in Chicago.

If players play long enough, everybody is going to make a mistake.

Its not the only mistake they have made defensively tonight. You just have to overcome it.

That’s what playoff calibur teams do.

  146. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

Melky looked like one of those un-atlhetic lttle leaguers who forgot his glasses

  147. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

Angel you’re right. the minute someone screws up they are worthless in some peoples eyes.

  148. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

So what did Chicago’s lefty reliever do in the 9th last night?

  149. Global Warming June 8th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

Go NYR- Melky is young so he gets the pass but you have to admit his route running when it comes to fly balls isn’t the best. It wasn’t good before that misplay and it still isn’t after it. His cannon of an arm outshadows that weakness most of the time. Hes young so he can improve of course but we are talking about the present here.

Basically all I’m saying is hold the phone on the “Melky is a Gold Glove CF” crowd.

In other news this game is still in reach and not over by any means.

  150. Josh June 8th, 2007 at 9:08 pm

that misplay hurts so much but yay jeter , down 1 now

  151. Global Warming June 8th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

SJ44 to compare Melky Caberera to Derek Jeter is absolutely foolish.

One is a veteran who has gold gloves and has made routine plays 1000′s of times.

The other is a young CF who is still developing and misplayed a ball madly. It wasn’t too long ago that people hated the idea of Melky being in CF because of his poor route running.

  152. Angel© June 8th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

He’s made a lot more stellar plays than he has boneheaded plays, Jennifer. Sure, that one was costly, but its hardly cause for people to start thumping their chests saying they were right and he’s not an everyday player. Geez.

  153. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

    We are inching back.

  154. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

I think I might remember Melky making a game saving catch up in beantown. So Shut up. He has saved more games than he has cost us thus far

  155. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

They seem to forget the game saving plays he’s made. Last year catching taking the homerun back from manny. This year throwing the guy out at the plate.

  156. Angel© June 8th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

Misplayed one ball? One.. amongst the many that he routinely gets and the few he gets that a lot of people wouldnt.

  157. Global Warming June 8th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

Go NYR please don’t be stupid. If we are talking about 1 game samples and last year.

How about the games in Boston prior to last year where he misplayed balls in CF and cost us a game.

Look I’m not saying Melky should be benched. I’m just saying hold off the “knighting” of a GG CF. He’s not……not yet at least.

  158. Joe Mama June 8th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

Hopefully the Yanks can beat up on their pen

  160. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

Global Warming- That is Melks first error this year. I Really dont understand how that counts as a homerun. A rule change needs to be made. So give the kid a break. He is definitely a gold glove caliber outfielder. He has not made an error yet

  161. james June 8th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

    bobbbbbbbbby

  162. Angel© June 8th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

I don’t know anyone thats knighted him anything. We’re just happy to have someone out there that can get balls most of the time, makes the occasional great play and an CF that people think about before they run on his arm. That’s hardly overvaluing him.

  163. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

or he drives one to left, we NEED Alex to come threw with something. I will be content with a flyout or a slow groundball

  164. Joe Mama June 8th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

  165. james June 8th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

I love Arod never been a hater but hes not great in these spots where we just need him to hit a deep fly get this thing tied up

  166. SJ44 June 8th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

Melky has made every play in CF this season except this one tonight.

The toughest possible play for a CF….a line drive hit right at him. Its a tough play but, he blew it.

He made a great catch in Boston on Sunday, a play no Yankee OF can make and made several great plays in Chicago. Probably saved one win in Chicago. Maybe two. Definitely helped win the series in Boston last week.

He is the best defensive player on this team and its not close.

Jeter? A shell of his former self at SS. Gold Gloves are given more for offensive play than defensive play these days.

Jeter hasn’t played great defensive SS for the last two years. This year, he has been less than stellar and I am being charitable.

One bad play doesn’t make a player a bad defensive player.

Especially since, Melky has more more excellent defensive plays than anybody on the team this year.

  167. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

well, he didnt exactly get the run in but he passed on the batton

  192. YanksFanLV June 8th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

Cairo definitely should have yelled “Hah”

  197. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

As you see, Torre is trying to lose the game by putting Ron Villone in the game

  198. YanksFanLV June 8th, 2007 at 9:50 pm

I can’t even begin to believe that we will see Villone in this game. He has to be just throwing a bullpen.. Nothing more.

  199. Dave K June 8th, 2007 at 9:50 pm

    Why Villone?

  200. Jeff NJ June 8th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

Cairo is getting the job done. He was absolutely awful in his rare appearences earlier in the year. I thought for sure he was done, but he saw an opportunity at 1B and he is taking advantage and more importantly helping the team.

  201. the todd June 8th, 2007 at 9:54 pm

    funny article on minky

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=2898392

  202. Jeff NJ June 8th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

closer in in a tie game. Not usually good outcomes.

  203. BX 12 Fordham Road June 8th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

    Mo no es bueno….

  204. helno51 June 8th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

Hey Jeff NJ, not only did the outcome turnout to be good, but that is what a manager is supposed to do in that situation. there are no more save opportunities

  205. Joe Mama June 8th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

Here’s hoping for some more A-Rod heroics

  206. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

That was a nice article on Doug. get well soon.

  207. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

Pete should tell Doug about this blog, maybe he could kill some time bloging with us. :D

  208. Dave K June 8th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

Oh, when I made the bullpen comment, I was under the impression Capps was suspended

  209. Jeff NJ June 8th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

yeah I didn’t say I disagree with it, just being worried. Good to be the home team in a tie game. A Rod is going to get a 9th inning at bat! I call walkoff shot by A Rod!

  210. Brooke June 8th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

I thought Capps was suspended – I thought he had hearing today and the suspension held up. My bad – clearly I was wrong.

  211. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

    Why was Capps suspended?

    Come on matsui…

  212. Brooke June 8th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

I am not sure – something that happened a while ago. He just had his appeal today. I am not really sure of the circumstances.

  213. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Damit who pitches now? How many did Mo throw?

  214. Dave K June 8th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

    John Sterling just killed me

  215. Dave K June 8th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

not even the ‘its deep’ or ‘it is high, it is far’.. he gave a ‘THERE IT GOESSS’.. oh John

  216. pat m June 8th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

Who follows Rivera if he doesn’t come out for the 10th…

  217. Jeff NJ June 8th, 2007 at 10:14 pm

moot question. I’m guessing Proctor in the 11th if needed.

  218. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:15 pm

Dave I strongly dislike listening to Sterling. He kills me on the homerun calls.

Farnsworthless or Proctor will pitch tomorrow, cause we’ll win it in the bottom of the 10th. :)

  219. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:15 pm

    Bugs bunny swing. LOL

  220. BX 12 Fordham Road June 8th, 2007 at 10:18 pm

I liked the old Mo….this new Mo does not make it look easy while breaking 3 bats and tossing 8 pitches an inning

  221. the todd June 8th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

ya sterling owes me a beer, i just spilled it all over in excitement. thats the 2nd time i’ve heard him do the premature home run call this year. both on matsui swings.

  222. the todd June 8th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

too bad rivera couldn’t make that play in 2001 :(

  223. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

No one up in Yankee pen, Confidence? or will he use Mo for a third?

  224. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

Oh geez 6 inches it was gone.

  225. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

Okay maybe not 6, i thought it was closer than it was. But don’t call me sterling. LOL

  226. james June 8th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

    squeeze play coming up

  227. Dave K June 8th, 2007 at 10:24 pm

    haha – lets go Cairo!

  228. I wish it was the 90's June 8th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

Capps was suspended for throwing at someone, inciting a brawl, etc. the usual.

I bet Phelps would have put a ball in the outfield for the Sac Fly haha…

either that or a strike out.

  229. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

Okay stole second, now they walk Johnny. We need captain Clutch to come thru.

Defensive indifference?? HUH? Should be stole base.

  230. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

Cheap infield single. But i’ll take it. Mo gets the win.

  231. Angel© June 8th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

For some reason in late innings its considered “defensive indifference” I’ve never totally understood that myself, lol.

  232. Dave K June 8th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

    I wish I was there

  233. Mike June 8th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

    WIN!!!

Jeter with the RBI single. Good stuff – four-game winning streak.

Rivera with a win as well.

  234. Dave K June 8th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

And for the not so good news…

Beckett looks good and Boston is up 4-0

  235. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

It makes no sense. They forced the other teams hand. To me diffensive indifference should be if a team is up by alot or down by alot. not a tie game.

  236. Angel© June 8th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

    Woohoo Jeets!!

  237. YanksFanLV June 8th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

    Oh Captain My Captain!

  238. Andy Hawkins' Ghost June 8th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

Ball game. What was Tracy thinking? Jeter in the ninth with the bases loaded? Death, taxes, and Derek Jeter in the clutch.

  239. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

cheap or not, it puts another tally in the “W” column

  240. Khoa Le June 8th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

    YES!

  241. Go NYR June 8th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

Oh yeah, and Matsui’s Fly ball to right was no more than, well, a fly ball to right. I thought he hit it well but it really was not close and being in the stadium, you should know if it is going out or not. A-rod’s Flyout was closer

  242. Andrew June 8th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

    Great, great win.

What on earth was Bautista thinking?

  243. james June 8th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

mets won so we creep up in the wild card i believe 5.5

  244. Joe Mama June 8th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

    Tigers lost 3-0
    Good win by the Yanks
They are starting to find ways to win games instead of finding ways to lose them

  245. Jeff NJ June 8th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

    Det and Cle lost.

  246. james June 8th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

I feel bad for andy his pristine era is over 3 cuz of the error home run, mo’s is down to 4.13

  247. As I Lay Dying June 8th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Jeter is now batting 0.999 with runners in scoring position!!

  248. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

soxs up 4-0 on dbacks. :(

  249. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

soxs up 4-0 on dbacks. :(

  250. helno51 June 8th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

Jeff NJ, my bad, i thought you were against the move. Im just pumped we got the win. I wasnt too sure about Joe going with Mo for more than 1 inning again but it worked out and for probably the only time this year, lets say thanks to the Mets.

  251. Kid Yankee June 8th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

    Hey losers:

While your all hopped up on celebrating your vivtory while you struggle to beat a crappy team (just like yourselves) The Sox are smok’in a 1st place team!

Welcome to June and Inter-league play as the Sox dupicate their results from last year (16-2) aganst the NL!

Oh and by the way: Rocket has a malfuction on the launch pad tomorrow and gets smoked for a very bad loss tomorrow!

Enjoy! We’ll be laughing at ‘cha

  252. Peter Abraham June 8th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

Think like the manager. Don’t sweat every Red Sox game. They’re a good team and will win plenty. The Yankees just need to keep winning series and look up on Sept. 1 and see where they stand. They’ve won 7 of 9 and are playing well. Enjoy that.

  253. Jeff NJ June 8th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

hell no, I’m for it, I have Rivera on my fantasy team, the win comes in handy.

  254. Nick B. June 8th, 2007 at 10:45 pm

Season starts when Rocket launches tomorrow. They are only 10 back as we speak so it is definately not out of reach. Pettitte, Wang, and Clip have been meeting there expectations. Mussina is on the way back to regular form and has been pitching decent, not up to anyone standards including his but he is on the way. If Rocket can be even a shell of what he was when he was here last then I don’t see any reason why this team can’t win the division. Get well slowly Giambi

  255. Bill_Brasky June 8th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

I hope the Yankees take advantage of Clemens starting tomorrow to win the game, because I was at the last game Chacon pitched in, vs. a talented Padres team at PNC park. He pitched 7 innings of two hit ball, but didnt’ get teh win because the Pirates closers gave it away on a silver platter. The Yankees can’t take the game against him for granted, is all I’m saying.

  256. Nick B. June 8th, 2007 at 10:47 pm

    Jeff NJ,

Me too. I have kept him in for this long. Maybe he can start producing some saves to catch all the other bum closers who have way more saves like Valverde.

  257. james June 8th, 2007 at 10:47 pm

zona scores one run now its 4-1

  258. Jake June 8th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

Cant worry about any other team right now. Just got to keep up playing good baseball. Get to .500.

    Get to 5 over.

    10 over.

The Sox are going to struggle to score runs. You will see.

  259. Tseng June 8th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

    Kid Yankee,

Yanks are a crappy team are they? Is that why they took 2 of 3 from your beloved sox?

  260. Nick B. June 8th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

We can watch the Sox on TV guys, we don’t need constant score updates.

  261. sunny615 June 8th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

Just saw the replays, Melkman needs to apologize to Pettite for costing him the win. That was tough.

  262. Jake June 8th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

Theres nothing “cheap” about an infield hit to win a baseball game in the bottom of the 10th.

  263. LCâ„¢ June 8th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

Joel Sherman just compared Mussina to the Rain Man LOL

  264. dan June 8th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

they better try and sign both peavey and venditte. peavey probably wont sign, hes committed to some big school (notre dame/usc/stanford are 3 names i recall that he might have committed to), so he probably wont sign. but venditte is nasty from the right side and scary (because of the change or arm, not the pitches) from the left. he’s an interesting pick

  265. jennifer June 8th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

Hey Kid Yankee, why are you worried about us lowly Yankees, we’re so far in back of you. Yet you are still concerned about us. Getting nervous?

  266. Curly June 8th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

What lame Sox fan takes the name Kid Yankee and proceeds to post on a Yankee blog after the Yanks just got a big win?

    One word?

    Loser.

  267. Nick B. June 8th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

    sunny,

i doubt Pettitte cares as long as the team got the W. He has been around long enough to know nothing matters but a WS. I’m sure he doesn’t get mad when he doesn’t get a decision.

  268. helno51 June 8th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

I agree we still have a shot in the division but its one of those things you cant follow on a daily basis. its a weekly thing. thats how we have to measure progress. rocket should extend the rotation to a solid 3 deep with moose and clipp rounding it out and hopefully hughes back by aug 1. things are starting to come around

  269. grabsomebench June 8th, 2007 at 10:51 pm

“Think like the manager. Don’t sweat every Red Sox game. They’re a good team and will win plenty. The Yankees just need to keep winning series and look up on Sept. 1 and see where they stand. They’ve won 7 of 9 and are playing well. Enjoy that.”

You really can’t enjoy it when the Yanks still trail Boston by 10 games and are stil over 5 games out of a wild card spot. That’s what happens when a team gets off to a piss-poor start…there is only relief from a victory, but no joy.

And I don’t want to think like the manager. If I did, I would put Jeff Weaver in over Mo to lose a crucial WS game.

  270. sunny615 June 8th, 2007 at 10:51 pm

very true Nick… still, that’s gotta be tough.

  271. Curly June 8th, 2007 at 10:52 pm

The Yanks are signing fellas way above slot. If this Peavey guy has first round talent why wouldnt he sign with the Yanks? He gets a head start on his pro career with the best organization for the same amount of dough he’d get in 3 yrs.

  272. Nick B. June 8th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

    dan,

I go to school at Creighton. He’s a pretty good pitcher. He was a teammate of Eric Wordekemper who is the closer in Tampa and is an All-Star (also a prospect no one talks about b/c fans only know people SJ44 has mentioned and don’t do any other research). Word was a 46th rounder who signed so Venditte might sign b/c of the path Wordekemper has made

  273. Jake June 8th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

I dont think Andy is crying on his way home tonight that Melky misplayed a ball and cost him a win.

  274. james June 8th, 2007 at 10:55 pm

    Now 5-1

  275. helno51 June 8th, 2007 at 10:56 pm

If you cant enjoy our play for the last week or so than you have a problem. yes we played like crap early on but now things seem to be turning and in 2005 we were a ways out too and while i would rather win the division, a lot of teams including boston and florida were wild cards who went thru us to win it

  276. Joe Mama June 8th, 2007 at 10:58 pm

    Arizona is second place team

  277. Nick June 8th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

Any clue as to who is leaving to make room for Clemens?

  278. helno51 June 8th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

Yeah who are we moving out? Hopefully not Britton but I bet it is him

  279. Nick June 8th, 2007 at 11:01 pm

I’d rather see Britton than Henn. They are keeping dead wood, instead of keeping the young guys who have the talent needed

  280. sunny615 June 8th, 2007 at 11:02 pm

    They should DFA villone.

  281. Nick June 8th, 2007 at 11:04 pm

Exactly – they used Henn to give Villone extra time in Scranton. Then on “D” day – they bring him up and option out Henn who had only one bad game. They get what they deserve with Villone -

  282. helno51 June 8th, 2007 at 11:06 pm

im not totally against villone but i dont see how he brings anything better than henn. both are average lefties but henn is younger and can give you longer outings. we need a long man so torre doenst go thru 7 guys when our starter has to leave in the second.

  283. enoch June 8th, 2007 at 11:08 pm

Pete’s right on the money with the above comment.

Yankees fans don’t watch sox games, their fans watch ours.

Ignore them, because right now they’re irrelevant. We just need to win.

  284. mel June 8th, 2007 at 11:08 pm

    LC,

    Wasn’t Rainman an idiot savant?

  285. helno51 June 8th, 2007 at 11:14 pm

I agree with Peter. like i said we have to measure things in weeks. out play them each week by a game and we are ok. on a day to day basis we will all drive ourselves even more nuts than we already are

  286. TJ June 8th, 2007 at 11:18 pm

I agree Pete..I’m taking one game at a time and not focusing on the Red Sox..My focus is on the Yankees and they seem to be awakening from their slumber. We just need to keep it up and worry about our team.

  287. HearnoEvil aka Redsox June 8th, 2007 at 11:24 pm

    Meanwhile, over at SOSH…

When Matsui hit the tying HR…
“One can complain only so much because Nady’s shot was even shorter, but Je–s that is annoying to see.”

    When Melky pulled the rock:

    “Melky strikes again!!!”
“That. Was. Awesome. That’s the Melky Cabrera I remember!”
“Melky having trot nixon flashbacks. Melk Dud.”
“Dude hit a line drive pea, think it knuckled ala D_ick Allen, and melky running sideays sort of overan it, as it passed him glove level, it was NOT over his head but by his head. He overran it or it knuckled back, yes didnt go a good job replaying the balls path. Then ball went to centerfield wall, Melky ran as fast as his little legs could carry him bless his little milky heart, but alas and alack poor eurick, it was to no avail. He relayed it to CI, who didnt even bother to make the throw, and also CI looked a little pi–ed.”

    But there was also this…
“Even with the snafu, I still have 0% confidence in the Pirates’ chance of winning this game.”

    Yanks rally in the 7th…
“Is the PIT pen that poor that they would throw Gorzellany to 110+ pitches? ”
“This is not going to end well.”
“And here comes the arsonist to face Slappy. It was fun while it lasted.”

Jorge ties the game with his single…
“Ladies and gentlemen, your 2007 Pittsburgh Pirates. Do we get to play them?”
“Aaaannnndddd, here comes pitcher #3 from the pen. Lets see if he can get one f—ng out. It would be progress.”

Marte gets to Pirates out of the jam…
“Wow. Why wasn’t Marte in to start instead of Torres?”
“Huge, HUGE ba–ing up by Damaso Marte there. Awesome.”
“Alive, but we know how this is going to end.”
“I agree it was a poorly managed inning, but Torres came in to pitch to ARod, I don’t know if you want to bring in Marte there. Worst move was bringing in Grabow to face Abreu who was lifetime 3-5 of him. I think bringing in Marte to pitch to Abreu would have been the better move.”
“Tracy got replaced by Grady Little. Enough said.”

A-Rod makes his great stop on Bay…
“Man I really hate 2007 Arod.”

    The final rally begins…
“Cano really does have a nice swing when he isn’t chasing garbage.”
“Damon IBB. Capt. Intangibles (who grounded out with Damon on the last time he was up) is at the plate with the bases loaded. C’mon Pirates! Double-play baby!”

    And last, the Captain’s game-winning “blast”…
    “B—-rds.”
“Of course another cheap hit wins it for the f—–rs.”
    “What a b—h hit. The pirates s–k.”
“Yankees king of the cheap hit as always…ah well”
“Don’t even bother the next two games – Maholm and Chacon will be lucky to last three innings.”
“Sure wish the Sox got to play the Pirates at home instead of the Padres on the road”
“Can’t wait for Clemens to ride in on his white horse and defeat a 2-8 NL pitcher tomorrow. The Yankees are definitely playing the c–p part of their schedule but they’re also playing better. Sox need to match them.”

  288. mel June 8th, 2007 at 11:25 pm

It was ugly, but a win is a win. Good to start this stretch on a winning note. They scratched out a win and finally won a close one, extended the streak, and evened their IL record. I’m tired of this one step forward, two steps back $#@!% where it takes two wins to make up a loss.

  289. SPARKY O June 8th, 2007 at 11:28 pm

JD DREW SUCKS MY LEFT NUT

  290. Brian - So Cal Yankee Fan June 8th, 2007 at 11:28 pm

Peter…Any idea who they will move off the 40 man roster to add Clemens? My guess is that they 60 day DL either Hughes or Karstens..or DFA DeSalvo or C. Bean.

    Enjoy the weekend off!

  291. YankeesLuv June 8th, 2007 at 11:29 pm

pretty much only way jeter wasn’t going to get that run is if he struck out or hit into a DP. It wasn’t the most beautiful hit I’ve ever seen but it got the job done. Big props to Robinson Cano who really set that all up, missed a game winning homerun by a hair. Poor Pettitte one of these days we are actually gonna score some runs for him. Go Yankees! :)

  292. susan mullen June 8th, 2007 at 11:48 pm

I just wanted to mention Mariano pitched 1.2 innings last night followed by 2 IP tonight. Pete said in his opening Mo pitched 1.1 yesterday. Is ESPN working on a stat to show you’d need 2 so-called closers from other teams to do what one Mariano Rivera does?

  293. God Save the Yankees June 8th, 2007 at 11:50 pm

I have a bad feeling Maholm’s gonna upstage Clemens tomorrow. Even more likely considering it’s Clemens first game.

    God save the Yankees.

  300. mel June 9th, 2007 at 3:23 am

O.k. I must be the idiot because I don’t know what the connection between Moose and Rainman. I do know that Mussina is a grumpy savant.

Andy has every right to be ticked at this team, but he was just happy that the team got the ‘W’. He’s definitely one of the good guys.

  301. Ben N.C. June 9th, 2007 at 3:30 am

    Pete –

About John Sterling, I listen to him/Susyn on the XM. We get the crazy calls all the time. I still love the guy, though.

I’m concerned about Brackman. He doesn’t have great work ethic. I’m around him here. I’m in the business.

Speaking of the business, how do you like working for a Gannett paper?

  302. Wouter June 9th, 2007 at 3:49 am

I’m sorry YanksFanLV, it was done by a Boston player, which have never played the Bush League.
    Either:
    - the play you referred to never happened at all, only in your imagination, which would explain the lack of media coverage.
    - the play is actually heralded as smart heads-up baseball in the “Let’s play the game right”-league (Beckett was on the mound, wasn’t he? :) )

The Yankees’ No. 3 pick was Ryan Pope, RHP, from Savannah (Ga.), the College of Art & Design (SCAD). Art and Design? SCAD grads are far more likely to get involved in designing virtual baseball video games than in playing the real thing. Let’s just say I became intrigued.

Pope pitched in something called the Florida Sun Conference. From the school’s website:

“Pope, who was taken by the Yankees with the final pick in the third round (124th overall), becomes the college’s first-ever pick in the MLB draft in the program’s 17-year history. Pope will join former SCAD pitcher Charlie Zink into professional baseball. Zink, who signed a free-agent contract with the Boston Red Sox in 2002, has split time with Class AA Portland (Maine) and Class AAA Pawtucket (R.I.) this year. Pope was the third overall selection taken by New York in the 2007 draft.”

“Pope, a 6-foot-3 junior right-handed pitcher from Bradenton, Fla., helped the pitching corps for the Bees to a 3.27 ERA, which is ranked 11th in the NAIA. Pope’s college-record 1.15 ERA is second-best in the NAIA, while he is ranked fifth in opponent’s batting average (.162), 13th in batters struck out per nine innings (10.76) and 18th in victories (9). Pope, who was named Pitcher of the Week in the conference four times this season, had 14 complete games and registered five shutouts in 15 appearances (14 starts). He struck out 122 while walking just 13 in 102 innings pitched in 2007. Pope, who was named to the All-FSC and all-region teams a year ago, threw a no-hitter —the second in college history—to open the season against Tennessee Temple University and tossed two two-hitters and one three-hitter. Pope holds college career records in games started (42), complete games (32), innings pitched (289.1), victories (24), strikeouts (284) and earned run average (2.36).”

    murphydog –

Thanks for the info on Pope. I also noticed the school and thought it was somewhat amusing. He majored in graphic design there, btw.

Pitcher Mark Buehrle said if he was traded to the New York Yankees, he would call a team meeting the first day and let everyone know he would not be following Yankees policy and shaving his facial hair. ”I’ll make sure it’s put into my contract,” Buehrle said.

I hope Yankees don’t sign him.

    Jeter’s wining single at 10
Under those circumstances, the top priority was to avoid a double play. If he hit hard, chances are the ball might have found an infielder. Instead, he sort of CHOPPED the ball. In doing so, pirates had no chance for a double play and no play at home. Jeter said he was lucky. I said it was brilliant.
