The Sunday Links
Roger Clemens is back and the Yankees won again. Brian Heyman has the story.
Now it’s time for Tyler Clippard to do his part.
The Sunday baseball notes takes a look at the draft, Jason Giambi, Lou Piniella and plenty of other topics.

I don’t know that Clemens is one of baseball’s three greatest pitchers, but he may well be one of baseball’s three greatest cheaters (with Bonds and McGwire).
Was the camera lens wide enough to capture Clemens bloated face and body?

Look at yourself, you little pantywaist. The ink on Roger’s first start isn’t even dry and all the little girls in Boston are running around in the streets, doing your best Paris Hilton impression: “It’s not right, they got Roger…. Mom!”
I guess 10 and a half games in mid-June isn’t a big enough lead for you. You sweethearts must already feel a classic late-season Bosox choke coming on. Never look back, Brian darling. Something might be gaining on you.

remember, Boston is going down. Not even Jedi Manny can save them.
Brian,
Do yourself a favor. Go and read a few cases re: internet slander and think very, very hard before you slander somebody, without evidence, on the internet. Its not as “easy” and “safe” as you think. And no, the “he is a public person” is not a defense in these cases.
In fact, a damage award of over 12 million dollars was recently awarded in a Broward County courtroom for actions similar to what you are spewing on this site.
What’s funny is, the person you are slandering was in Theo Epstein’s office two days before he signed with the Yankees, getting the Red Sox sales pitch.
If your beloved Red Sox knew as much as you do about Clemens (sarcasm there), why were they offering him a deal?
Do yourself a favor and stop embarrassing yourself. Why is it so important for you to troll on a Yankees blog, contributing nothing to it, and make allegations you have ZERO ability to prove?
Are you that insecure or that needy for attention?
Kind of sad, really. Go to SOSH and enjoy your misery. No reason to hang out here and show yourself to be a fool with each post you write.

From Loopy Lupica’s column today:
“For everything that’s gone wrong with the Cubs so far, and the early pounding Lou Piniella is taking, they came into yesterday five games under .500 and five games behind the Brewers in the Central.
The Yankees – with a lot more talent in the room, even with all the rookie starters – are two games under .500 and 10 games behind the Red Sox.”
Dear Mike: Only a weasel like you could come up with the gems you shared with us today.
Rebuttal, Point one: Try comparing apples to apples next time, dipstick. While Milwaukee got off to a good start they are not the Boston Red Sox. The Brew Crew is at 33 – 29 or about 7 games behind Boston’s pace. Take 7 games away from Boston and the Yankees are a lot closer than 10.5 out by my math. But hey, I’m not a sports columnist/part time political observer and social-climber like you.
Point two: How convenient that you set up a straw man with which to knock the Yankees down – “with a lot more talent in the room, even with all the rookie starters.” This would be the same “talent” in the lineup and bench that you have mercilessly castigated Cashman for assembling and Torre for misusing? And the same bullpen that’s been dumped on repeatedly? And I know you can’t say enough about good stuff about Giambi.
Point three: the Cubs are in the National League, stupid. It’s easier there.
Point four: While you were out stomping the divots at the polo matches in the Hamptons, you must have forgotten how this game works. Starting pitching is the whole ballgame. When you suffer the injuries the Yankees did, you don’t do all that well in the same division as a team that is pitching like Boston.
Little Mikey, it’s time to put down that Mojito and get out of the sun.
I’m not sure who called it yesterday, but Lupica couldn’t give the Yanks/Rocket credit without harping his age and the amount of money he’s getting paid. Then Loop has the nerve to compare the Clemens signing to the Mets getting younger arms like Perez, Maine and Sosa. Nevermind that a) the Mets happen to have older pitchers like Glavine, El Duque and a very handsomly paid Pedro; and b) the Yanks have young, inexpensive arms like Wang, Hughes and Clippard.
The thing is, I wouldn’t mind Lupica’s anti-Yankee slant if he had an opinion and a plan of how he’d like to see the Yankees constructed – you know, actually offer a solution – instead of re-writing the same article every 3 days explaining how the Yankees are old and spend too much money.
I just read that the Yanks sent down Britton and kept up Henn?
Does Joe even look at stats?!
Dr. Acula:
My bad. I meant “girls” only in the Paris Hilton and Kevin Youkilis sense.
randy1: I hear crack keeps a guy looking trim too – maybe that’s Brian’s secret. At least that would explain his comments.
Lupica has become so irrelevent, I rarely read him anymore.
Great call Murph. You just knew Lupica would come up with something to rip the Yankees after Clemens debut.
Reaching more than usual but, the same ‘ol, same ‘ol.
He was a better columnist when he wasn’t so full of hate, like his racist buddy Imus.
You would think George took away his favorite pool toy with the hate he shows toward the Yankees.
Memo to Mikey…..when last I checked, sports is entertainment. If you weren’t entertained yesterday, regardless about how you feel about Clemens, money, the Yankees, etc, you don’t have a pulse.
One would suggest you acquire one. Who knows, it may make you a better columnist.
I called it yesterday, saying how Lupica would rip the Yankees at any opportunity. I really don’t know how he stays employed, being so biased against the most popular team in the city. It’s like the Daily News is just trying to annoy us.
SJ, good post about the Red Suck poster. Hopefully he’s rational enough to listen and just take Peter’s blog off his favorites list.
I was at the game yesterday and I will tell you, it was great entertainment.
Hearing “Rocket Man” again blasting over the PA was priceless.
What was additionally fun? Melky redeeming himself with a spectacular catch and the stadium chanting “Mel-ky!”
SJ:
Mikey wants people to think he’s the new Dick Young, or maybe the new Al Franken. Mikey keeps re-cyclig the same sports column because he’s too busy lately leading us down the path to redemption in politics. Whose idea was it to let Mikey the Hack start writing about politics anyway?
By the way, talk about defamation, I don’t know if you saw it, but Loopy wrote a column earlier this year, when Clemens was still doing his Hamlet routine, that suggested quite clearly that Clemens was using PEDs. (Quite startling actually that it got past legal review, “reckless disregard of the truth” and all that).
Roger looked a bit old yesterday but he will do his next cycle soon, so his fastball should improve.
SJ44
You’re well-informed and I do respect your opinion, but I’m confident that I have no legal liability re: Clemens and PEDs. I prefaced my remarks (yesterday) on Clemens start by referencing a Kevin Hench column on Foxsports.com which highlights all of the reasons to believe that Clemens’ late-in-life resurgenece from his last 4 years with the Sox (40-39 WL) is chemical enhanced.
Re: The Red Sox courting Roger (or was it vice versa?) …. I won’t answer for Theo …. but Clemens has managed to avoid drug testing by “retiring” for the last three years (coinciding with the new drug policy), so I’d prefer that the Sox avoid him (though I’d hypocritically welcome him if he came to Boston).
Let me add that a have a lot of respect for most Yankee players, and joined with those who applauded Torre at Fenway when he returned fron prostate surgery. Clemens is a different story … you simply don’t know him as well as Boston fans (though you must suspect that he is playing all of us like a fiddle).
Re: my occasional forays into this site …. I’d like to think that it adds a different perspective to the dialog. There is no need to be so vitriolic when a heinous outsider graces your domain. Whoever called me a “pantywaist” should be more concerned about internet liability than myself.
now that the yankees are the yankees again, what’s changed? well, they’re hitting over .300 for the past ten games for one thing. the pitching is settling down, both starting and the bullpen. having abreau and cano and melky hitting again is huge. one thing i wonder about is all of them being latin players and not being used to the record cold spring that we had in the northeast. it’d be interesting to see stats on that across mlb. with so many latin players, maybe it does have an effect. playing baseball in freezing weather is a different game. jeter grew up in michigan so he’s used to it. maybe it’s nothing ,but i wonder. if there is a statistical correlation, i’m not sure what you could do about it.
i still think the yankees need another starter. pete’s trade of farnsworth for leiber would be looking good right now. with clemens, pettitte, mussina, and a rookie in the rotation it’s important to have that extra starter. this from clemens himself:
“I can only hope and pray it continues to respond, Clemens said.
he;s talking about his body in general. as yankee fans, we need to be hoping and praying too because he went from a very few pitches off the mound to 108 in a mlb game very fast. like nolan ryan, roger is a freak of nature, so if anyone can do it ,he can.
all in all, a good week. the yankees are back to being yankees.
brian (red sox fan says, “Whoever called me a “pantywaistâ€? should be more concerned about internet liability than myself.”
ha ha ha. this should be a good one. just a hunch, but i think the author of that ” pantywaist” comment knows his way around legal minefields.
my opinion is if the” pantywaist” fits, you need to acquit.
sj44-
i saw brackman pitch last summer in the cape league. i didn’t know who he was , but my first impression was that he was athletic and very coordinated for a really tall guy. my second impression was that he was throwing really hard. i checked a scouts gun and he was 96-97 on every pitch.
i’m liking the pick because while there is some injury doubt, the upside outweighs it.
Solid start from the Rocket, made more impressive by doing it without spring training or many rehab starts. Hopefully both his endurance and his fastball improve with time.
Here is a link to Dayn Perry, who puts yesterday’s start in perspective:
Basically, he shows that Clemens started off slowly last year too.
The only thing that worries me is that he is usually wrong when writing about the Yankees — like when he wrote that they should trade Wang and Cano before 2006 season because both had already peaked. Fortunately, the lunatic midget (name rhymes with “poopica”)is down on Rocket, so everything should be okay.
Thanks for the personal input, randy l. I also like the pick because of the upside. You can never have too much pitching, but the Yankees are well stocked with potential middle and back end of rotation guys. Brackman is a gutsy move towards maybe developing a front of the rotation guy.
P.S. Folks, please don’t go ballistic: I like Kennedy, Chamberlain and Betances, too, but until they show consistant front-end ability at AA and AAA, they are still middle of the rotation prospects. And that’s not a bad thing, either.
Brian:
You only come to inform and enlighten. Right.
You wrote:

(What? What did I say? Why are people being so mean to me? I was just offering a different perspective. I wasn’t trying to offend or incite any fans of the Yankees by calling Clemens a cheater and fat here on a Yankee fan site. I was just offering my neutral and purely fact-based opinion for the betterment of the game, to foster a more pure understanding of baseball, for the betterment of all mankind).
Hey “Brian,” maybe you can explain something to me. On the issue of liability for defamation, how does your actual reputation in the real world get damaged when you go by an anonymous name and post intentionally inflammatory remarks on a fansite designed for entertainment purposes?
Look, if you’re going to continue to post here, a course you should re-think, I have three suggestions:
1. get a thicker skin,
2. drop the holier than thou crap (I come in peace to inform and enlighten), and,
3. take yourself a lot less seriously.
The Yankees are back on track. But, let’s not get carried away. They are still under .500 and have lots of questions marks. October is not guaranteed. http://valentinesviews.blogspo.....maybe.html
I think Lupica should go back to writing for The National.
gee.. what a shock.. you beat a team twice with a payroll of its starting 9 that probably barely exceeds what you are paying Carl Pavano….
try revenue sharing your local TV revenue… but then again, if you did that, Torre and Cashman would be long gone… only massive spending far in excess of what almost every other MLB team could do has allow managerial stupidity to survive this long.
There is nothing wrong in hoping for positive things. The fact is with 100 games left Yanks are just 5 games out in the WC. So, they are in real contention and it is not getting carried away
Regarding the divison, we have to wait and see. It really depends on where we will be by the end of July. If we are something like 5 games behind by end of July, then it is realistic to expect that divison is within reach. Though they lost a few games recently, the injury bug has not hit Boston yet and it very well could happen later.
BBFan,
You have become the “voice of reason” on this blog.
Its early, both for panicking (as many readers did, throwing Torre and Cashman to the wolves) and for expectations (need to get to .500 first).
I don’t wish injuries to anyone, but your point is well taken. The Red Sucks have not yet had significant injuries, and they also have not had to deal with a real losing streak where things just don’t go their way.
TigersFan, Your team had a nice run last year. As a baseball fan, it was good to see. And also good to see a well run organization. But your gratuitous razzing is unwelcome. Who needs you? Go away. Play with your own fan boys.
TigersFan – Not the Yankee’s fault that those are the rules, and quite honestly, I can’t say that it’s helped us much beyond the regular season in recent years.
But why don’t you go to a Pirates blog and ask them what their team owner does with his share of the luxury tax check he gets from the Yankees. Does he buy another mansion or does he reinvest it in the team and sign a good FA?
Randy,
I agree re: Brackman. When you are drafting in the later part of the first round, as the Yankees do just about every year, Top 3 (talent-wise) kids don’t always drop into your laps.
When they do, you grab them and take the shot. Brackman is one of those kids.
Kids like Brackman, once they play one sport, can concentrate all their time on conditioning, arm maintainence, etc.
As old scouts say, “You can’t teach 98 (MPH)”. If they take their time with him, get him healthy, and teach well (which they have done with Hughes, Chamberlain, etc) that’s an awfully nice arm to add to the stable of young pitching prospects.
Brian,
To quote a Fox Red Sox shill writer as “evidence” of PED use doesn’t pass the laugh test.
Do you really think Roger Clemens was shopping himself around to the Red Sox? Are you that naive or ignorant to think there wasn’t interest on the Red Sox part and he was an invited guest?
I mean, come on, at some point, if you are sincere about “adding a different perspective” here, at least stop insulting our intelligence in thinking the Red Sox are “above the fray” with regard to acquiring Clemens and some of their other moves.
Your holier than thou organization has a wife beater playing SS, and several players on the current roster who have always been locker room talk on the PED issue.
So, don’t give me this “our organization is better than yours” nonsense when it comes to this stuff. Your holier than thou organization offered Roger Clemens 15 million dollars last year to only pitch on Sunday’s.
I guess that’s something Bill Simmons and Hench forgot to mention when they were riding the PED horse in discussing Clemens.
Melky Cabreara impact:
As we all know, last year, but for Melky’s spirited play and jolt of energy we would have never made it to the palyoffs. Then he was removed from the lineup and we lost that edge in the playoffs.
I am sure every one noticed that we have been playing much better since Melky was made starter again. In the ten games since he has been the starter, our record is 8-2. He is batting .378 and giving stellar defense, excep for that lone miscue two day sback.
It all was made possible with Giambi’s injury. Ten games is not a very good sample, still it looks like we do not need Giambi in the every day line up for us to be a very good team, in fact it is to the contrary.
My hope here is that whenever Giambi comes back this season, if he does, Torre does not repeat the mistake of last year and glue Giambi to the bench for the rest of the season and the playoffs if we make it (which I strongly believe we will). With Giambi on the bench, we will also solve the weak bench problem.
“try revenue sharing your local TV revenue…”
it’s not northeatern teams problem that fans in pittsburgh don’t choose to go to games. i can’t see any reason why my money as a yankee fan should support the pirates because their own fans don’t.
let me get this straight. when the yankees and red sox play each other, you want to share that money with other teams because why?
TigersFan:
The Tigers spent $95 million this year (for a 35-26 record). So, what’s your point? A team can’t spend over $100 million?
The Yankees choose to operate at a higher level of capitalization – - they spend more money to make more money – - and pay plenty of money to MLB’s welfare program for the privilege of doing so.
Why on earth should the Yankees share with you or any other team the revenue from their TV network on top of the welfare it already pays? If Steinbrenner thinks of another way to make money, and exploit his initial investment, why does that mean profits for you? That’s classic anti-capitalist, socialistic, welfare state thinking.
Fact: small market teams just don’t cost as much as big market teams to buy or to run. The whole revenue sharing thing is a scam born out of greed, trying to benefit from Steinbrenner’s willingness to risk his own money on his franchise. The MLB welfare recipients don’t even have to put their welfare money back into their teams – - very few do.
So how does the welfare program help remove the Yankees’ so-called competitive edge or level the playing field? It doesn’t. It’s a crock. If you are not making enough return on your investment, you can sell your franchise, you big baby. Nobody forced the owners to buy the Detroit franchise and nobody is forcing them to keep it.
I love holier than thou, amateur baseball economists who demand more shares of the winners’ pie, but who refuse to face up to the inherently crooked nature of baseball. You want a level playing field? Then why not do away with MLB’s anti-trust exemption? Let the market set profits by removing restrictions on who can operate an MLB franchise and how many there can be. Take the gloves off and may the best man win.
Small market teams should be happy teams like the Yankees come to visit and bring sell-out crowds with them to help keep these franchises alive. Add that to the welfare payments and guys like you still want more. I’m sick of you leeches demanding more of somebody else’s pie. Go make your own money and quit complaining.

Tigers fans coming out of the woodwork too!!! hahaha
Even the Tiger fans have to come here and talk about the yanks.
Everyone is just getting scurred… “The Yankees are coming”!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think there’s going to be some intimidation from every team left on our schedule. Roger is a threat and now with him aboard the Yankees can take the #1 spot where they belong. I see Yankees back on top and winning the next games.
Sorry Pete I can’t agree with you about steroids. I don’t much care what the athletes do to themselves, but I do care about the example they are setting for children. Here in suburbia, high school coaches are suggesting that their children ‘bulk up’ – is that why we encourage sports for them?

The very-married Yankees star has been publicly skewered since he was snapped in the company of a buxom blond stripper while in Toronto.
Wonder if Alex will keep on saying how much he loved being involved with the Boys Club while he was growing up.

The very-married Yankees star has been publicly skewered since he was snapped in the company of a buxom blond stripper while in Toronto.
Wonder if Alex will keep on saying how much he loved being involved with the Boys Club while he was growing up.
why dont the yanks give edwar ramirez a shot i mean relievers are so year to year anyway youd think theyd wanna go with the hot hand and see what he can do.i guess torre wouldnt use him anyway but i think ramirez and britton could go a long way to fixing our bullpen problems. other than that the yanks are looking good i think the big run is coming.
BBFan you nailed it. Giambi will be the perfect bench player for us when he gets back. No way Torre makes the same mistake twice and forces a veteran in the lineup at the expense of team chemistry.
Hey Pete, I was checking the site from my mobile phone and it looks great. Can’t believe how easy it was to read.
Annie, you are incorrect. The Boys Club did not pull ARod’s ads. The Boston Globe, as usual, is misinformed.
The Boys Club spokeman, and MLB confirmed the ads will still run yesterday.
So much for another moralistic post.
Guys, let’s not get too carried away. Jason Giambi is not going to be a bench player when he/if he gets back.
They aren’t paying the guy 20+ million a year to be a bench player. Especially when he is the only other guy who can hit with power (behind Arod) in the lineup.
Not the way baseball works in the real world. The Yankees would be the laughingstock of baseball, in addition to weakening their lineup, if Giambi was a bench player.
Don’t let 3-4 days of Miguel Cairo cloud your thinking. These guys are bench guys for a reason. They can’t play, and play effectively, every day.
Jason Giambi is not going to sit on the bench for Miguel Cairo or Josh Phelps.
If/when he is healthy, he will be in the lineup.
I guarantee a week or two from now, when Cairo or Melky is struggling, and they aren’t hitting the long ball, you guys will be clamoring for Giambi.
It would be nice if he could play first base but, we know he can’t.
That said, if he is healthy, he will play. They need his bat in the middle of the order.
Guess you can’t believe anything you read in the Boston Globe. Shame on Carol Beggy & Mark Shanahan who took credit for that erroneous A-Rod story in the Living/Style column on June 8, 2007.
SJ,
The discussion was about Melky Vs. Giambi being in the line up. Not Giambi Vs. Cairo.
I agree Giambi will be in the lineup instead of Cairo. But that will happen only if Giambi can get on to the field, which is a big if.
Regarding Melky, you are flat wrong. This guy has proven last year and he is proving this year. What else you want to happen bebore you trust he is a good player?
The moment you force Giambi in to the lineup there will be a cascading effect which sends Melky to bench, Damon to Center and the whole team becomes weak in many facets of the game. Ho miuch did we win with Gaimbi’s power this year. This guy is a clog on the bases and you have to waste a pinch runner as he can not run the bases.
We will wait and see, but I am sure, so are people like Jeff NJ, that Melky will be in the lineup when Giambi returns. If Giambi cracks the line up it will be at the expense of some one else.
First of all, with all his troubles and what Bud is trying to do with Giambi, he MAY not even be part of the team for this year and all this discussion will become a moot point.
Speaking of body shape changes, did anyone remember or see Manny Beingmanny when he first came up and played for Cleveland? You can see him and Thome too in that classic game of Jim Abbot’s no hitter. Both of them (esp. Mann) are built like jockeys or 100 yard sprinters! Well, I guess as you age you definitely put on the lbs. !!!
As much as I love Miguel Cairo, and everything he does for the team.
I agree that there is no way he would play ahead of Giambi, when he comes back.
He did an awesome job last year at this time for Cano,”Dontcha Know”.
Anyone have info on the ambiedectiuos young pitcher that the Yankees drafted?
Pat Venditte
Doesnt the Boys and Girls Club, also use Tom Brady as a spokesperson?
A-Rod is married with a child…..Tom Brady is having a child out of wedlock.
Glad to hear that they are not pulling the ads.
Hope Chacon gets spooked and rocked today, but he has a big heart and that worries me.
I am as big a fan of Melky as anybody on this board. I defend him when people come out of the woodwork and rip him (remember the, “Why can’t Kevin Thompson take his place in the lineup”, posts?) whenever he makes a mistake. The issue isn’t Melky vs. Giambi. Its Cairo vs. Giambi because, if Giambi is healthy, and Damon can’t play first, Damon is going to CF and Melky is going back to the bench.
FWIW, I think they will acquire a first baseman by the deadline. I don’t see them going the rest of the year with Cairo and Phelps at first. I also don’t think Minky will be back this year because fractured wrists are tough to heal without a full 3-4 months of rest.
Its probably why they want Damon to work out at first base. If Damon can play some first, in the event they don’t acquire a first baseman, then it would be ideal.
Damon at first, Melky in center, Giambi at DH.
However, make no mistake, if Giambi is healthy, he isn’t going to be a bench player. He is going to be in the lineup.
Would be a shame for Melky but, that’s what happens when you overpay in the desire to have an all star at every position. Young guys get squeezed out.
Annie Savoy the Boston Trash…I mean Globe is wrong, oh how shocking. Trying reading the NY Times
RODRIGUEZ REMAINS IN ADS
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America, in response to a published report that the organization was pulling television advertisements featuring Alex Rodriguez because of concerns about his off-field behavior, said in a statement yesterday that it would continue to run the ads.
“A recent statement regarding ads featuring Alex was inaccurate, Evan McElroy, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America senior vice president of communications, said in written statement. “We regret any misunderstandings that have occurred as a result of this statement. Major League Baseball continues to run these spots as part of their campaign in support of Boys & Girls Clubs.
In a telephone interview, McElroy said, “Someone misspoke; it was inaccurate and we regret it. He said the organization never considered pulling the advertisements.
1) Lets stop with the legal liability junk. Slander first of all is “spoken”, libel is “written” and secondly whoever brings the suit has to prove it’s not true. You think Clemens is going to let some nobody search through his medical records to prove that he hasn’t taken PED’s. I don’t think so. Also good luck bringing a suit on somebody calling you a panty waist. HAHA the judge would throw that out faster than Clemens throws his fastball.
Predicted 9-3 yesterday, check the record so today its going to be 8-7 Yanks. Scoring in 3 in the bottom of the 8th.
Whoops . . . shouldn’t have worried about Chacon. Wil the thrill Nieves is in the lineup.
If Giambi does come back, his only place in the lineup is DH.
In such a case, Damon should be 1B.
Melky has to be in CF.
If Damon shows he can handle 1B, there is no need to get another 1B. If he can not, and they really want a better 1B, then it is likely Damon will be traded, as they can not do any thing with Giambi becaue of his no trade clause and no one wants him. Damon can be traded to select few teams, I beleive 10, as per his contract.
Damon will not be traded, he’s a legit leadoff hitter. Giambi’s health is not going to miraculously get better. Everyone’s talking about how Damon is aging and deteriorating as a player. He’s Jack LaLane (sp?) compared to Giambi. It seemed like we had a glut of players at 1st and CF. In hindsight that was a good thing, wasn’t it? If Giambi continues to have health problems, mlb issues, and Cabrera keeps it up the Yankees will not wedge Giambi back into the lineup. They’d better learn with the Sheffield fiasco last year. I like Damon as the DH until we can good legit, healthy power. He likes it, too, and knows that the team is better with Melky in CF.
Mel,
I agree fully with you, that is exactly what I was saying in my post that started this discussion.
SJ, does have a point that if Giambi is healthy he will not sit. The question is how Torre handles that situation. I just hope he does not repeat the mistake of last year.
