Yankees making their move

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jun 10, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

That’s six straight and nine of 11 for the Yankees. If Arizona holds on, they will be 9.5 games behind Boston and 5.5 games behind Detroit for the wild card.

This is why you don’t panic in May. There are 101 games left to play and everything is on the table, including the division.

Almost time for The Sopranos. Think Tony survives? I would guess he does if only to leave the door open to continuing the franchise some day. But David Chase is bold enough to kill him off.

Sorry for the lack of posts this weekend but I had some time off.

    +*BREAKING NEWS*+

Red Sawks fall to D-Backs, lead sliced to single digit.

Paris and Boston placed on suicide watch.

A week ago the Bombers were 13.5 out and Fenway was taunting “WHERE IS ROGER ?

So much can happen in a week.

Beantown’s lead has been slashed by 4 full games as the Yanks TAKE 6 in a row, 5 out of 7 on the road, dominate the Pirates, and rise five times in ovation to one of the game’s legends.

When events go sour, minds immediately wonder whether ARod opt out at the end of the year. After today’s curtain call and the rockin’ he had, should we be asking “why would he want to?

Who will lose it first, Schilling or Boston’s classy fans ??

    *Roll Bombers, Roll !!*

    Now bring on ‘da Mets.

  2. jk June 10th, 2007 at 8:33 pm

Tony lives but will have to deal with some heart breaking losses.

  3. Dr. Acula June 10th, 2007 at 8:33 pm

    p.s. Dice-BB takes the loss.

  4. Donatello Giannini June 10th, 2007 at 8:39 pm

Some well deserved time off Peter. You do an awesome job of bringing us the highs and lows. Thank you and enjoy your time off.

  5. YankeeJosh June 10th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

    Peter,

No need to apologize. You update your blog more than the other papers sites combined. You even checked in with a friends blackberry. This is the best Yankees blog by far and don’t apologize for having a few days off.

  6. AD June 10th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Pete: you deserve some days off after that long road trip. And, btw, you provide the most up-to-date and insightful postings on the web for the Yanks. Thanks.
I guess A-rod was right about batting behind Abreu and seeing a lot of pitches. Now, both of them are right again and knocking the cover off the ball.
    Go Yanks!

  7. Jake June 10th, 2007 at 8:43 pm

I wonder if the ledge jumpers will be back on the bus this week.

All the quitters should be ashamed of themselves.

  8. andrew 33 June 10th, 2007 at 8:46 pm

pete this is a terrific site, i dont know if i was on the ledge but i did think the season was over, they are FINALLY putting together a great team effort

hopefully they can keep this up and get it down to 6 games, either way this is a team that should be in the wild card hunt all year

footsteps the trolls are hearing, how great it would be if those 6 games we have left with boston are a battle for teh division

  9. chris June 10th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Tony will survive almost. THE DOC WILL KILL HIM AT THE END !

  10. Jeff NJ June 10th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Pete, your lack of updates coincided with a Yankees sweep. I’ll take that trade any day.

  11. Temps June 10th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

Tyler Clippard… is he gonna stay in the rotation?

  12. Temps June 10th, 2007 at 8:54 pm

    BTW – Tony gets whacked

  13. Global Warming June 10th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

Clippard will probably get another start.

If he turns sour again…….Kei Igawa to the rescue I guess.

  14. RJPinestripes June 10th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

Pete…awesome sight. Get rested up for our next big series. We are, ahem, ON-A-ROLL, at last. Joe said he will stay with Dah Clip as #5 (not to cry but he really got squeezed today by the ump. But, then again too bad that Hughes went down cause he would be our # 5 starter at the present time. Any news on when he might be back?

  15. Dr. Aculac June 10th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

    Tony gets Designated For Assignment.

  16. Global Warming June 10th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

Mid August. Hamstring/ Grade 3 Ankle

He needs to be back on the MLB roster by Sept 1st to be playoff eligible. Than again it’s a question of if the Yankees even bother and just stay safe and shut him down/send him down.

  17. daysleeper June 10th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

i’m not writing off clippard yet. even wang has a bad start now and then. i say he gets at least one more chance to prove himself. we have a lot of mondays off over the next month and then the ASB so we don’t need a #5 too often anyway.

  18. Farnsworth For Lieber June 10th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

The Yankees should try to reacquire Jon Lieber so the rotation is Wang/ Pettitte/ Clemens/ Lieber/ Mussina with Clippard further developing at AAA-Scranton as insurance.

  19. BBFan June 10th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

Players on disabled list are eligible for playoffs.
There is no need to activate Hughes before 1st September.

  20. Neil June 10th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

I don’t think t-Clip is ready. I want R. Hernandez to start the next time they need a 5th starter. I’m not expecting much from Hernandez, but If he can hold down the fort until Igawa gets 2-3 more starts at AAA, it would be great. Ruvelus can then be the long-reliever.

  21. Gonzo June 10th, 2007 at 9:19 pm

Tony not wacked, will end with him sitting on a lawn chair like mike corleone but wont show him dying but might imply it. Peter, dont apologize the site rocks. Red Sox fans where you at? 9.5 games is nothing.

  22. LCâ„¢ June 10th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

Anyone know whats going on with Hughes?

  23. JohnnyB June 10th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

I will start talking about wild card and division leads when the Yankees break .500, it’s a Yankee pet peeve of mine that I can’t seem to break.

  24. Farnsworth For Lieber June 10th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

The Yankees rotation before Clippard next Sat.6/16 vs. the Mets will be Wang/ Mussina/ Pettitte/ Clemens.

If Clippard sucks vs. the Mets, the Yanks should have this rotation after Wang 6/17:

    Mussina/ Pettitte/ Clemens vs. Colorado 6/19-21
    Wang/ Runelvys Hernandez*/ Mussina 6/22-24 (off-day 6/25)
    Pettitte/ Clemens/ Wang 6/26-28
    Mussina 6/29

*Hernandez starts 6/23 because the Yanks can’t afford three straight bad starts from Clippard (6/10, 16 & 23) despite his good first 4 starts.

This would give the Yanks 13 days (6/17-29) to acquire Jon Lieber for 6/30 vs. Oakland, 7/4 vs. Minnesota, 7/16 vs. Toronto (the fifth game after the All-Star Break), 7/21 vs. Tampa Bay, all at home, then 7/26 at Kansas City who he shut out Sat. and 8/4 vs. K.C. again (an off-day 7/30 allows the
Yanks to move him up to 8/4). 5 of his first 6 starts at home.

  25. Danm June 10th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

    Pete,
I love the lecture on not giving up too early. Way to go bud. It sounds great coming from a guy who was willing to jump ship along time ago. I specifically remember a quote a while back where you suggested that we should come to terms with the fact that “maybe this team is just not that good.” Keep up the good work and welcome back to the bandwagon.

  26. Yankee VIP June 10th, 2007 at 9:40 pm

    pete,

you do a great job with the blog, hope you enjoyed the time off.. although without your updates and comments, the weekend wasnt as much fun..

ty clip should be given a break, he will do just fine. i think he didnt a few calls in the game and started to try and pitch to fine.

  27. Erik June 10th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

I am all for a trade of Lieber to the Yankees. When he was here,he showed that he could handle New York.
Perhaps Cashman can throw some money towards the Phils and get Chris Coste back with Leiber.
I certainly DO NOT want to see Kyle Farnsworth in a late season very important game,or playoff game for that matter.
Please Philadelphia,do us another favor this season!!!

  28. Nick B. June 10th, 2007 at 9:44 pm

Hernandez was a bum that KC didn’t want and was sitting on his couch last week. This guy is typically out of shape and very lazy. Give Clip another chance before you let that fat, lazy bum pitch. Unless you guys really liked what you saw out of Sidney Ponson last year.

  29. Sox Fan June 10th, 2007 at 9:45 pm

I don’t think any Red Sox fans are worried to pop in here. 9.5 games is in fact quite a large lead. Things are going well when your division rival’s fans are celebrating like they just won the division when really they only went half a game under the double digit mark.

  30. Nick B. June 10th, 2007 at 9:45 pm

If you guys want to see a fat lazy dude pitch go find a slow pitch softball game somewhere.

  31. Nick B. June 10th, 2007 at 9:49 pm

Hernandez is awesome!!! Also he was signed to a minor league contract by Boston and they wanted nothing to do with him. Last year Kansas City (AAAA) sent him home from Spring Training b/c he was to fat to pitch. Want me to keep going?

  32. Russell W June 10th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

The Phils would love Farnsworth right now and it would be interesting to see what we could get in return. I am more concerned about Teixiera. With Texas not doing so well, they will certainly be looking to shop some players. What do the Yankees have to offer? I want Tex!

  33. Yankee VIP June 10th, 2007 at 9:54 pm

just a side note.. watching the nba finals, im a big fan of jeff van gundy as a commentator.. he is actually interesting, obviously high basketball IQ, and is funny at times.

  34. Neil June 10th, 2007 at 9:54 pm

Lieber might not be available w/ Garcia on the DL

  35. Green Tea Torre June 10th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

hate to rain on everyone’s parade, but the yankees still have a long way to go. they had to win 6 straight just to pull to a single digit in games back. 9.5 is nice considering we were looking at 14.5 a week ago, but it’s still a monumental task.

bottom line is this, it’s nice to see the yanks playing good baseball, which is the only way they’ll make it back to the top. a few weeks ago, fans were saying we can make it back, because there are a lot of games left to play. well, we have to win those games. the difference now, is that winning seems possible. but i don’t think they can afford so much as one slump from hear on out…

  36. LCâ„¢ June 10th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

Did my cable black out or was that really the ending to the Sopranos? WTH was that?

  37. jay destro June 10th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

what an amazing end to the sopranos. i loved it.

  38. the todd June 10th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

i dont see them going after leiber unless they can get him for peanuts (and farnsworth) they are not going to let igawa and his 40 million dollars sit in the minors forever. they have 7 eligible starters. hughes will be back eventually and who knows if ian kennedy keeps going down in AA he may get an august/september call up

  39. jk June 10th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

    RIP Phil’s head.

  40. Rufus June 10th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

I’d like to think the Yanks can do much better than Lieber. They need bullpen help. Not another 5th starter.

  41. jonathan June 10th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

everyone was complaining about the sopranos ending but i thought it was great. Perfect set up for a movie and typical chase style.

  42. Joe da man June 10th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

Teixeira is out with an injury to his quad, put right on the 15 day DL. That doesn’t sound good, bet he is out for a decent stretch of time.

  43. Huuz June 10th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

I’m generally of the opinion that we shouldn’t rush Hughes back to MLB, but then i realized that this year is his BIG chance to be tutored by the Rocket. Hughes NEEDS to be back by Aug. so he can learn from the HOFer!

    …i hope.

  44. jennifer June 10th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

I read Texira is on the DL.

And the SOPRANOS SUCKED!! What a waste. now i have to wait for a movie to come out to find out the ending.

  45. Jeff NJ June 10th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

That Sopranos ending was very unsatisfying. Not sure what I would’ve wanted. That last scene was super tense though, like something tragic was about to happen. And then nothing did. Sorta sums up the show a bit, lots of build up and tension then a less than a bit of a let down. Actually that describes our Yankees since 2001 also.

  46. murphydog June 10th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

Regarding Teixeira and the Disaster that is The Rangers, this in from Scott Miller (June 10) at sportsline.com:

“… Teixeira is at odds with Washington and, with the first baseman about 15 months from free-agency, there is a realistic possibility the Rangers, 16 1/2 games back in the AL West, could trade him. However, Teixeira’s trade value is diminished to a degree because, with Scott Boras as his agent, it is highly unlikely that he would agree to a contract extension, something the acquiring team would almost certainly want in place before a trade is consummated.

The Rangers are said to be asking for a pitcher and a player in return for Teixeira, but given the situation, it’s doubtful they could get that.”

Miller’s column also suggests that Teixeira is the player clashing most vehemently with embattled skipper Ron Washington. This ugly turn of events comes on the heels of this same team allegedly not playing for Showalter because they didn’t like him either. I’m not saying that Tex is wrong or that Washington and Showalter are likable. All I’m asking is whether you are willing to pay a king’s ransom to rent a 27 year old backtalking first baseman without any shot at a reasonably priced extension to stave off his free agency? I’m not.

  47. daysleeper June 10th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

david chase i’m pretty pissed but also kinda happy

  48. Jonathan C. June 10th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

I didn’t think the Sopranos finale would send me to bed with a huge smile on my face, but it did.

  49. xenos June 10th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

The abrupt ending meant that Tony got whacked. Don’t forget the foreshadowing in the previous episode, Tony flashing back to his conversation with Bobby: “you don’t even hear it when it happens”.

  50. Josh June 10th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

pete u shuld probably put a spoiler warning on this post, i dont care but someone will im sure

  51. Larry June 10th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

I wasn’t overly impressed by the end of the Sopranos. Short of Phil getting popped in the head in front of his grandchildren and then to have is head run over by his daughters car, nothing too exciting transpired.

They seem to have left the door open for a movie though…

Go Yankees. They kicked some butt this past week and I love it.

  52. Angel© June 10th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

Yeah, some people in other time zones haven’t seen it yet?

  53. Farnsworth For Lieber June 10th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

    Rufus

Are you serious? So you want Farnsworth to remain a Yankee?
If so, change your name to Dufus, cuz Farnsworth sucks.

Farnsworth to Philly for Lieber, Clippard sent back to AAA-Scranton, and Britton called up to take Farnsworth’s place in that order for a Mo, Proctor, Bruney, Myers, Villone, Vizcaino, and Britton bullpen.

  54. James June 10th, 2007 at 10:55 pm

xenos has it right. The scene with OBby and Tony on the lake sums up that ending. Thats why Chase cut it off — blank screen, and no music = no vision or hearing, which signifies death. On the other hand, the fact that Chase didn’t give it away was a good buisiness move. He can create a movie now if he chooses to, beause he didnt kill off Syl, and Tony could very well be alive. It could have been worse.

  55. Someone got popped... June 10th, 2007 at 11:04 pm

…at the end of Cleaver. For folks who want a nice, wrap it all up kind of an ending, please go see it.

Diner scene was some of the most tense, effective TV I’ve ever seen. Thanks to David Chase and Co. for the Sopranos.
We won’t see their likes again.

  56. David June 10th, 2007 at 11:11 pm

I don’t want to give up on Farnsy just yet, I’d like to see if Clemens can help him straighten himself out. Short leash though, I’d give him till a week before Trading deadline.

  57. BBFan June 10th, 2007 at 11:15 pm

Every one was demanding that Abrue should be traded or DFAd. See what is happening now, he has been a catalyst for the Yankee resurgence.

Now every one wants Kyle to be traded. Sure, he is having some control problems right now. He was good last year. Give him some time and he will reutrn to form. In fact, he was ok in his last two appearances. He is turning it around.

  58. murphydog June 10th, 2007 at 11:22 pm

    FFL: (Farnsworth for Lieber)

I can tell from your pen name how reasonable you are willing to be about this issue. Sorry, but at most a trade of Farnsy for Liebs is a slight improvement if that.

With his stuff Lieber will not translate that well to the Thunder League (AL) where there are very few “gimme” outs at the 7, 8 and 9 holes. He’ll be just as frustrating as Jaret Wright or the late Corey Lidle. Seriously, that’s only a little better than Tyler Clippard and on a good day Tyler is better than Wright or Lidle were last year. That incremental improvement for three months is not worth giving up Farnsy plus money for Lieber. (It’ll be only a three month thing. No way Lieber makes a post season roster if there is one and he won’t be with the Yanks in 2008 assuming we pick him up this year).

While I agree that Farnsy is not the strike-throwing machine you need in the 8th inning, the fact is that a bullpen with Villone, Myers and Vizcaino is not greatly improved by losing Farns and promoting from within.

  59. Matt June 10th, 2007 at 11:24 pm

for everyone that says sopranos ended in tonys death i want to know how he was killed, sniper shot from the bathroom….the last scene was a clear shot of tony where you can see to both sides and behind and not a weapon in site.

  60. James June 10th, 2007 at 11:28 pm

Matt, do you have to press a pistol up a against a persons head to ensure their death? Last time a checked you could shoot a concealed weapon at a person(s) from a decent distance away and still hit your target. And, that was a pretty small restaurant; you wouldnt have to be soviet sniper to hit Tony dead on.

  61. Farnsworth For Lieber June 10th, 2007 at 11:30 pm

    BBFan

I thought the Farnsworth signing was awful cuz had the potential to be another Steve Karsay signing: another expensive long-term contract to a middle reliever. Farnsworth’s career wasn’t even all that impressive with Atlanta and Detroit. 3 years $15.75M -awful.

He’s been having some endurance problems, like not being able to pitch three games in a row if needed which ALL the other relievers in the Yanks’ pen can do including Mo.

Return to form? What form? He’s been a lousy, inconsistent middle reliever -not even a setup/long/swing man- since the day he joined the Yanks.

He was “o.k.” in his last two appearances. Is that supposed to be funny? The Yanks aren’t paying him about half of what Mo’s making this year to be o.k.

Maybe -hopefully- Philly thinks he’s as good as you think he is and the Yanks get back a veteran warrior for the #5 starter slot like Lieber.

  62. James June 10th, 2007 at 11:43 pm

The only discrepancy with the Sopranos Season Finale should be this: Who would kill Tony? The NY Family seems to be OK with him at the moment, the NJ Family is fine with him. Who would have done it?

  63. Global Warming June 10th, 2007 at 11:46 pm

I’d do Farnsworth for Leiber in a heartbeat. More about getting rid of Farnsworth than it is getting Leiber.

Leiber would be a nice consistent #5. 6IP 4 ER type of pitcher.

Farns is easily replaceable with Chris Britton in the pen.

Farnsworth has amazing stuff but hes always 1-0 2-0 so it kind of negates it.

  64. Mat June 10th, 2007 at 11:48 pm

    James,
I am pretty sure that the guys from New York would be pretty pissed about Phil being killed.

  65. Farnsworth For Lieber June 10th, 2007 at 11:51 pm

    Hey murphydog

“Lieber’s stuff” translated into a 14-9 record for the 2004 Yankees and 17 wins for Philly in ’05 in a division with the Mets and Braves, not exactly pushovers in ’05. He had an o.k. ’06. He’s the perfect #4-type #5. He’s also better than Clippard and might be as good as Mussina if not better at this point. BTW Chris Britton and Henn are better than Farnsworth who is the last guy in the Yanks pen I or any other Yankee fan with a brain would entrust a tie-hold to if Mo was unavailable or out of the game…but maybe Philly bites.

Oh, from my pen name, I’m unreasonable? Newsflash moron:
Peter Abraham proposed Farnsworth for Lieber and I agree with it, so go take it up with him. What if Clemens gets hurt? What if Clippard turns out 2-3 more stinkers like he did today? What if some other Yankee starter gets hurt? You want Matt DeSalvo, Kei Igawa, or Chase Wright back up here cuz guess what? K.C. castoff Runelvys Hernandez probably isn’t much better. Those are the four you’re gonna have to deal with for the rest of this year if Clippard stinks or one of the other guys falls to injury. No way no how.

Um, actually clueless, Lieber would make the Yankees postseason roster because if the Yanks make the postseason, their rotation is Wang/ Pettitte/ Clemens/ Mussina, but if one of those guys gets hurt or bombs, guess who has to step in? Lieber. You want to say Hughes, o.k., well there’s no guarantee he’ll be back AND good and do the Yanks want to entrust Game 4 of the A.L.D.S. with the Yanks down 1-2 (let’s say) to a kid who’s made 2 M.L. starts? No way, his psyche has probably been damaged somewhat already (I’d hope as little as possible), and this isn’t about some kid being a savior or getting the glory. You don’t take that gamble with the season.

I could care less if Lieber is with the ’08 Yanks or not,
I just want Farnsworth and his $5.25M for ’08 off the books. If the Yanks have to throw in cash to get rid of Farnsworth, so be it, then it’s

  66. David June 11th, 2007 at 12:12 am

I’d much rather let Clippard hold on to the 5th start than get Lieber. You are going to go through growing pains with young pitchers. But that’s better than adding a retread like Lieber.

  67. Gonzo June 11th, 2007 at 12:17 am

Im sorry but lieber is garbage. and i could care less about getting farnsworth and his 5 million dollars off the books when we have that imbelicile pavano taking up 10 every year and not doing jack.

  68. Gonzo June 11th, 2007 at 12:18 am

jees i guess i am the imbecile, i misspelled that nasty style.

  69. Yankee Fan in Chicago June 11th, 2007 at 12:32 am

    Mat,

The NY guys gave Tony the go ahead to whack Phil.

  70. Scooter June 11th, 2007 at 12:49 am

Speaking of moves, check this out – Joba Chamberlain to Trenton:
    http://www.nj.com/thunder/time.....038;coll=5

” With Brett Smith and Wednesday’s scheduled starter against Connecticut, Alan Horne, each deserving of promotions to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, room will need to be made on the 24-man roster for Chamberlain and Tim Lavigne, who will get the nod in one game of tomorrow’s doubleheader against the Defenders at Waterfront Park.

The 21-year-old Chamberlain, chosen 20 spots (41st overall) after Kennedy in the supplemental phase of last year’s draft, is 4-0 with a 2.03 ERA in seven starts at Class-A Tampa. He is scheduled to arrive in Trenton today.”

  71. Vinny June 11th, 2007 at 1:16 am

The best part of the Soprano’s was when Phil L. got shot in the head and then his head was crushed by the SUV. The sound of it getting crushed was the best part.
Other than that, there was too much speculation left to wonder about. I smell a movie or some type of reunion piece.
I thought the last episode would be more exciting and it left me disappointed.
I guess I was waiting for a St. Valentine’s Day type of massacre to happen.

  72. Matt Waters June 11th, 2007 at 1:26 am

Were those dudes in the restaurant the same guys who clipped Bobby? That would answer a lot of questions right there.

Also, Torre hasn’t really done anything to enrage me lately, other than hooking the admittedly shaky 2007 version of Mike Mussina early in his outing. You go Joe.

  73. Johnny the chin weasel June 11th, 2007 at 2:31 am

    I killed Tony Soprano.

Great news about JOBA CHAMBERLAIN being promoted to Trenton !!!

As for the Bobby Abreu effect lets not go so far w/ this , Alex can hit w/ anyone infront of him, he’s got better mechanics this season, Bobby Abreu is hitting now and taking pitches but lets not lessen or make more of what Abreu’s influence on possibly the greatest HR hitter alive today is, lets not forget that Bobby was in a slump and Alex was still tearing the cover off the ball this season.

not so much brandon … i think abrea has a huge effect on arod (matsui being on fire lately behind him as well helps too) but when arod had that great april, bobby was hitting, they both cooled off in may and now they are heating up again … arod is a great player someone like bobby hitting in front of him just is icing on the cake

    Murph,

Farnsworth for Lieber is the same kid who wrote post after post calling for a Dye-Abreu trade and had all these convuluted posts remaking the Yankees off reading COT’s.

He insults people when he gets called on them.

When the next Yankee goes into a slump, he will have trade offers for them and insult everybody who disagrees with them. Its a pattern.

They don’t need Jon Lieber. The fifth starter spot can be handled from within with players in their system. Its not a need position. The division race is not going to be decided by the fifth starter.

Like it or not, until they find additional help in the bullpen, they need Farnsworth. Nobody else on the roster can pitch 8th innings. Every time Torre tries someone else in the role, they fail.

If they are going to move Farnsworth, or anybody else out of the bullpen, it should be for additional bullpen help, not a fifth starter.

    Jon Lieber?

I’d rather have Clippard go out there every five days because thats what Lieber is on this team. A 5th starter. Its not like hes Carlos Zambrano.

The Yanks need pen help. Why would they trade Farnsworth at this point?

  78. BBFan June 11th, 2007 at 8:54 am

    Well articualted SJ, regarding Fransworth.

  79. Nick B. June 11th, 2007 at 9:39 am

If the Yanks didn’t make that trade two months ago when they needed more than one starter why would they pull the trigger on that deal now? It really makes no sense now. Clippard will be fine. Give him one more start before writing him off.

That being said if this team throws Runevuyls “Sidney Ponson” Hernandez, I will officially consider Torre and Cashman crazy. That guy is as lazy as Ponson and Colon combined and he spends more time at the buffet than them too.

If the Yanks are going to get Texiera I hope they don’t wait until the deadline. Texas is basically out of it, and this team doesn’t have a lot of room for error. If they are going to add him I hope they would do so before July and definately before the deadline. That being said, I think it will be a move made during the offseason so Texas can evaluate all offers a little more clearly and take their time making sure they get the best available package.

    SJ:

Agreed. Farnsworth should be used to get a bullpen arm if he is moved.

BTW, Prior to his last outing, against the abysmal KC Royals, Liebs gave up something like 14 runs in three games. Lieber is a bad, bad idea except of course to our young friend Master Farnsworth-for-Lieber.

The same kid who went on about Abreu for Dye? Uhhhh not me, sorry I don’t live on this board like you. That trade wasn’t that kid’s idea: I read in the N.Y. Daily News and Post, heard it on YES, and read it from Peter Abraham himself on this (his) blog. I agreed with it and still do, so like I told the other moron, take it up with him. FFL isn’t my trade idea either, It’s Peter’s. Perhaps those Abreu for Dye rumors motivated Abreu. You’d be suprised how people react under pressure. There was a report that Cashman called Chi-Sox g.m. Kenny Williams about the rumor himself and that’s too weird to be false. I find it odd and irritating that Abreu came out of it offensively and defensively when the rumors flew, it makes me wonder about his work ethic esp. on the defensive end. It’s about time Abreu showed up considering he’s making $15M this year, let’s see how long it lasts, he pulled this act earlier this year. I’d still trade him for Dye. If anything, Abreu bought himself another month. If he goes back to being lazy again, expect more rumors, it’s only 6/11, 7/31 is a loooong way off.

When the next Yankee goes in a slump, I’ll ask for him to be traded? Um, again, wrong guy, but let me tell you right here who I myself wouldn’t trade, who I would trade, and who I’d keep cuz he’s serviceable and/ or has no trade value anyway, 2007 Yankees-wise (all players who’ve played for them on the current 25-man roster):

Wouldn’t trade: Cano, Jeter, A-Rod, Matsui, Posada, Rivera, Bruney, Proctor, Pettitte, Clemens, Wang, Henn, Britton, Hughes, Cabrera, Karstens, Rasner, Wright, Bean, Villone

Would trade: Damon, Abreu, Mussina, Giambi, Myers, Vizcaino, Clippard, Farnsworth, Igawa

I’d keep cuz he has no trade value anyway: Nieves, Mientkiewicz, Cairo, Phelps, Basak, Thompson (basically the entire bench)

Obviously Pavano isn’t even in the picture as he’s history.

The fifth starter CANNOT be “handled from within”. You obviously don’t know as much as you think you do cuz check this: Rasner, Karstens, and Hughes are all out long-term.
Igawa and Wright are not throwing another pitch for the ’07 Yanks. Pavano is gone. The options “from within” are Clippard, DeSalvo, and Runelvys Hernandez. If you think Lieber isn’t better than those three, you really know nothing about him or baseball. What if a Yankee starter falls to injury genius? DeSalvo or Hernandez, pick your poison.

Au contraire about the fifth starter not deciding a division race -are you serious? Let’s say the fifth starter whoever he is makes 20 more starts this year (101 games left) and sucks so bad, the Yanks are 7-13 in those games and lose the division by 4 games. It’s fair to say the fifth starter cost the Yanks the division.

Farnsworth for Lieber means Clippard sent down to AAA-Scranton and Britton called up to take Farnsworth’s place for a Rivera, Bruney, Proctor, Myers, Villone, Vizcaino, and Britton bullpen. They need Farnsworth like they need a hole in their head.

  82. Jeff NJ June 11th, 2007 at 11:40 am

Nick B, Teix is on the DL probably for a month so he can’t be traded right now. Then teams would have to see his recovery, so nothing will happen with him before the end of July.

  83. SJ44 June 11th, 2007 at 12:46 pm

Since you have 4 players on your “trade list” who have no trade clauses and the rest have no market, I’d think twice about questioning whether someone “knows what they are talking about” when discussing baseball.

I doubt Bobby Abreu needed “motivation”. He was in a slump. Everybody has them. Even better hitters than Abreu.

The fifth starter can be handled from within in several ways. First, Clippard can pitch better. Second, don’t be so sure Igawa has “thrown his last pitch” for the Yankees this year. Unless you are Brian Cashman, I find it hard to believe you would know such a thing.

Third, if Hughes returns by Late-July, he is the fifth starter. No need to trade for a guy for one month of work.

Fourth, with Chamberlain and Kennedy both being called up to AA, a AA pitcher is moving to AAA. Its probably going to be either Alan Horne or Brett Smith.

If that pitcher pitches well in AA, while Clippard struggles, they can go in that direction.

Four different scenarios for solving the problem from within. All better than trading for Jon Lieber.

They aren’t moving a part in an area of weakness (the bullpen) for a 5th starter who is making #2 or #3 starter money. It makes no sense to do so because you can’t name a single race in the last 10 years of baseball that has been decided by a 5th starter.

Its not where teams place their money.

Kindly can the namecalling. If you are incapable of debate without namecalling, find another place to do it or at least have the guts to use your name when calling people “morons”.

Then, we can find out if this is just your internet persona or you really have the guts you are so desperate to convey in this blog.

  84. murphydog June 11th, 2007 at 12:52 pm

    Farnsworth for Lieber:

Gosh FFL, you really know your baseball and are obviously good enough to be a GM in the majors right now! I bet Pete would even let you help him run the blog based on what you have shown so far in just a couple of utterly brilliant posts.

The rest of us are clearly such clueless morons with nothing to do but spend our lives on this board and who don’t know as much as we think.

Hey, we’re really sorry and we’ll try not to disagree with you anymore.

  85. Scotty June 11th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

    Caution the yanks are flameable
