Lucky seven as Yankees reach .500

June
12

card-d55.jpgWhen Chien-Ming Wang allowed the homer by Chad Tracy, it was the first since Ben Broussard broke up his perfect game on May 5, a span of 45.2 innings.

Funny scene after the game. Hideki Matsui turned 33 today and a Japanese radio reporter asked Derek Jeter if he knew that. “Yes, Matsui is 35,” he said.

“No, 33,” she said.

“Yep, happy 35th Matsu,” Jeter said.

“No, 33!” she said, now flustered.

Jeter just smiled that “I’m Derek Jeter” smile. “He’s 35, didn’t you know that?” he said. “Happy birthday.”

The Yankees have won seven straight, their longest streak since they won 10 straight from May 7-17, 2005. That streak two years got them going. We’ll see what this one does.

Here is some audio from Jeter:

    So is Matsui Cuban?

  2. Anthony

Haha Jeter is a class act

  3. Seth

Jeets had me dying when Melky almost hit himself with the bat. Jeter just saunters over like “oh boy, you’re really gonna get it now”

    Hilarious.

  4. John_Halfz

What’s the deal with Edwar Ramirez? Worth a shot?

Doesn’t throw very hard, but his K rates are insane with that changeup. Wonder, based on his numbers, why he had to start 2005 and 2006 with independent teams. Anyway, since having his contract purchased last year:

    2006 Tampa: 1.17, 30.2 IP, 14 H, 6 BB, 47 K
    2007 Trenton: 0.54, 16.2 IP, 6 H, 8 BB, 33 K
    2007 Scranton: 1.02, 17.2, 9 H, 6 BB, 29 K

    In summary, that’s 65 IP, 29 H, 20 BB, 109 K for a combined ERA of 0.97.

The 0.75 WHIP is unreal. The K/9 rate of 15.09 is unreal. And after watching Farnsworth, a K/BB ratio of 5.45 is attractive.

Granted, he’s a soft thrower (89-92), but from all reports, this changeup is a plus, plus, plus pitch. It seems that he throws hard enough that batters can’t sit change.

i found this very funny.. on the ESPN recap of the yankee game this is what who list as the unsung hero of the game:

“Unsung heroes: Kyle Farnsworth retired Tony Clark on a liner with two on that ended the eighth, and Mariano Rivera worked a perfect ninth for his eighth save in 10 chances.”

the Mo reference is right on.. but come on!!! Kyle as a hero. Did they forget to notice it was Kyle who put the two men on. I mean really, whats going on here.. someone explain

  6. TigersFan

who cares about the .500 yankees…

    HOW ABOUT JUSTIN VERLANDER!!!!

Heck, if a Yankee did this tonight he would have been canonized by ESPN for the entire year.

  7. mel

    uh…we care…this is a Yankee blog.

  8. John_Halfz

ESPN doesn’t like the Yankees. If Beckett or Dice-K did it, the boys in Bristol would make an instant sportscentury 90 min special on it. Bob Klapisch would go between the lines. Steve P would declare Josh or D-Mat the Cy Young. S. Smith would talk for three weeks about Beantown Flava. And every Sunday night game of the week for the rest of the year would be changed to a Red Sox game so as to maximize use of the soft focus no hitter video montage.

When it came time to give out BBTN awards, Kruk and Kurkjian would pronounce it biggest story and best moment of 2007. It would win at least 3 Espys.

  9. John_Halfz

    EDWAR RAMIREZ.

    TELL US ABOUT HIM.

  10. the todd

ramirez was picked up from the indy leagues … hes been a monster coming out of the bullpen. he will be called up as soon as viz or myers or villone gets DFA’d (well if one of them does.)

  11. Yankee VIP

    edwar ramirez, really???

Now, I am not saying he couldnt help the bullpen or that he could have success(I could pitch better then what we’ve seen this year from our pen). But there is a reason he was in the indy leagues and hasnt been given a shot (i dont even think he was with the team in ST.. not sure though).

before we start championing this guy as the next best thing.. lets be skeptical about his numbers.

This was a great win today all around… great pitching from Wang and it feels good to keep the momentum going against a cy young pitcher like web after playing lowly pitt.. its a big confidence boost

  12. the todd

that guy has a 1.00 ERA and 29K’s in 17 innings, some people mature and learn how to pitch later than others, sorry but the deserves a shot, is he the next rivera ? no but he can’t be any worse than viz and sometime this year he deserves a shot.

  13. Ted

    Tiger trolling in the house.

You just have to let it go. They were asleep for so many years, let them have “their moment”.

  14. John_Halfz

I don’t think he’s the next best thing. He’s 6’3, 155. I’d rather see him than other marginal talent. I played up his numbers a lot just because this is the third year in a row he’s put up good, affiliated MiLB numbers. Bullpen guys always come out of nowhere. We’re looking for success in a small sample set. Even if we think that MLBers would figure him out much faster than his AA or AAA opponents, we wouldn’t be getting any more than 35 IP anyway.

He’s clearly very deceptive. He might be very average once he’s figured it out. But he’s making it clear that he has the early edge on the competition in a way that Luis Viz will never have.

  15. Igawa at 1st

Kind of like the play when Jeter caught a ball IN BOUNDS against the Sox and then dove into the stands.

  16. Tim

That 10 game winning streak in May 2005 was part of an overall 15-5 effort for a great run to put the Yanks 6 games over .500. But that streak was immediately followed by a 3-11 stretch that took them back under .500. We know they eventually turned it around with consistent play over the summer months, but lets hope that lull doesn’t happen this year. It could be disastrous.

  17. Mike Parch

He has 9 walks in 17 innings. Thats a little high for my taste.

  18. Chris NY

“Kind of like the play when Jeter caught a ball IN BOUNDS against the Sox and then dove into the stands.”

I’m sorry, when did Jeter start playing basketball?

It’s called momentum, genius. But since you think he caught it “in bounds” on a baseball field, you must also not know what it’s like to run full speed and try to stop 3 feet before a wall that’s about to break your knees.

  19. Igawa at 1st

I am sorry In Play, Inside the foul line, there is no real way to say it in baseball, yet you knew what I meant.

An yes I know what momentum was, and this is what I am trying to prove, the dive in the stands was miraculous, the play not so much.

“you must also not know what it’s like to run full speed and try to stop 3 feet before a wall that’s about to break your knees.”
I recall Pokey doing the exact same play two innings earlier and just curling over the wall.

  20. Igawa at 1st

    *momentum is

don’t want Chris jumping on grammar too. Its nice to see you can’t talk about the play but the fact I said In Bounds means I think I am watching a basketball game.

  21. Matt (another one)

This Yankee team looks as loose as I’ve ever seen them. Jeter joking with reporters is just one sign.

Anyone watching right before the game started last night (~8 pm or so) could see Chien-Ming Wang go down the dugout, from Melky to Cano to Abreu to A-Rod to Damon to Jeter to Donnie to Joe to Gator to Posada, doing a different funky handshake with each. Watching millionaires act like fifth graders in a treehouse was fantastic, and they really take their handshakes seriously.

Then when Melky got his glove stuck to his bat…as if a groundout wasn’t bad enough…Cano mercilessly ragged on him back in the dugout, dying laughing into a towel as Melky kept pointing to his palm.

Great stuff. As any athlete knows, when you’re winning, there’s no better feeling.

  22. chris in fairfield

    i love jeter’s dry humor .

kyle in the 8th was scarey but he did manage to pull it off . he just doesnt have lights out stuff . i say trade him to the phils for some prospects

  23. halfz

    Igawa at first:

Jeter is a pretty average defensive shortstop. But he goes back on pop flies extremely well. He also positions himself well. Most SS wouldn’t come close to making that play.

  24. Igawa at 1st

“Jeter is a pretty average defensive shortstop. But he goes back on pop flies extremely well. He also positions himself well. Most SS wouldn’t come close to making that play.”

I agree with everything said here.
    But two things
Pokey Reese made the same play two innings earlier (there were no men on base and he didn’t dive into the stands so it wasn’t dramatic)
And, as your said early or someone using the same name a Boston no hitter would get blown way out of proportion, just as a Jeter dive into the stands did.

  25. coops2001

Jeter’s better ability to play fly balls (vs. his range) has led some experts to speculate about playing Jeter at CF, and move Arod to SS. Even if that works, who plays 3B.

As for the “in bounds” play, I’ve seen that play many times – Jeter’s flying in to make that catch, there’s no way he could have stopped. The play shows his desire to place the team’s interest ahead of his own. Besides, something had to replace the famous ‘01 Oakland shuffe pass to Possada!

  26. ray

With Mussina pitching tonight I believe the streak stops at seven.

  27. sunny615

“The Cincinnati Reds, who could be in position to trade reliever David Weathers and slugger Adam Dunn, had a scout at the [Yankees-Diamondbacks] game.”

    from Lisa Kennelly at NJ.com

    Is cash gunning for dunn?

  28. Bill

I called the Dunn move last week.

Mussina will win tonight – simply because I’m going to the game.

  29. sunny615

    ray:

this year, I’d be pretty close to agreeing with you, but as a DC resident and having seen Livan pitch, I’d say we have a good shot at winning.

  30. Bill

Livan is 0-2 with a 4.12 ERA in three starts against the Yankees, giving up 10 runs on 17 Hits & 11 BB’s in 19 2/3 innings.

  31. Anthony

Igawa at 1st, the reason that play got such notoriety was because Jeter made the play no matter what. It showed once again that he would put his body on the line for a Yankee win. Nobody cares about your hero Pokey Reese and I don’t recall his play being ‘the same play’ if obviously he didn’t have to run at full speed and be unable to stop before launching into the stands. Jeter’s the man, don’t hate.

  32. ray

    Hey Sunny:
I have to confess I am not that familiar with Hernandez, but noted he has a 5-3 record so far. Even as a Sox fan I’ve always respected Moose as a player….it’s just that I am not sure he has found his groove yet this season.

  33. Bill

Ray: Win & loss records are the WORST stat to review if a SP has been effective or not.

  34. Bill

    Livan’s WHIP v. Yankees = 1.42.

The bats should continue to stay hot tonight.

  35. Anthony

So would Dunn become our CF? Is he a good fielder? I don’t know if I’ve ever really watched a Reds game and paid attention. I’m not sure if I like this idea, I like the way the team is right now and I think Melky adds a great presence when he’s playing everyday through his energy, even if his offense isn’t the best.

But I guess that might explain playing Farnsworth last night in the 8th. Maybe that’s who the scouts were here to see.

  36. mark

Dunn is an absolutely terrible defender. He is best suited to DH. He is basically an all or nothing player. Either he hits a HR or K’s.

  37. Anthony

That sounds like a terrible addition to our team. What do we do with Damon then, put him back in CF?

  38. Pittsburgh Yankee

Red Sox fans on the board (+/- the usual trolls making comments about the Jeter catch):

A question for your presumed champions of the AL East this year…

How many games in the past 10 have they scored more than 2-3 runs? 1? 2?

If Ortiz gets hurt (has to happen sometime), can Nancy Drew carry the team?

  39. Jeremy

Dunn is not a good fielder and has never played CF. He is predominantly a LF and has played only 108 games at 1B. I’m not sure how he would use him.

In response to a question Jake asked yesterday, I tried to think of a player who hits 40 home runs but isn’t a huge asset to his team, and the ony name that popped into my head was Dunn. Dunn is a good player, but last year he hit 40 HR and had “only” a 110 OPS+. That must be hard to do. He’s still a safe bet for 100 walks and 40 HR though, and that means something. If he was a good bet to play an adequate 1B, I’d say let’s pick him up on the cheap, but I’m not sure that he is.

  40. Anthony

Maybe it’s actually Griffey that the Yankees are looking at.

  41. Jeremy

Dunn isn’t “all or nothing” because he walks so much. He just doesn’t collect a lot of hits. You can expect him to have a low AVG, high SLG, and middling OBP. If he raises his AVG (and thus his OBP) a bit, he’s like another Giambi.

  42. Anthony

    Or even Hatteberg for 1B.

  43. nyy

    Pitsburgh Yankee,

I have a similar question. What happens if either Andy or Roger get hurt for an extended period of time(has to happen sometime). Is Igawa going to carry this team for the rest of the year. Don’t get too carried away with the 7 game winning streak. By the way the Sox won 4 of 5 even though they scored 2-3 runs a game.

  44. ray

    Pittsburgh Yankee:
Good question. First, I won’t speak for other Red Sox fans but I am very aware that the AL East is still up for grabs. I grant you that the Sox offense has not been real potent the last ten games, but there have been times this season that the Yankee offense has been unproductive too. What happens if Ortiz gets hurt? He is a big part of the Sox offense but certainly there are other players. The last time I checked Lowell was the RBI leader for Boston and actually ranked sixth in the AL. Even Lugo who has been a disappointment at the plate has more RBI’s than both Jeter and Matsui. Youkilis is looking good and of course there is Manny so we won’t be jumping off the bridge any time soon if something happens to Big Papi!

  45. saucy

pete, you realize if (and when) they win tonight, you’ll have to post an 8 of spades with your post game post. this will have to continue.

  46. Igawa at 1st

Why am I a so called ‘Troll’ if I was just defending the Sox because if they threw a no hitter it would get blown way out of proportion, and I compared it to the Jeter play.

Most trolls just come onto boards and yell obnoxious comments such as
    9.5
    Wow .500
Lets see you guys face a good team for once

I made none of these comments and yet I disagree with the Yankees therefore I am a troll.

    Me Troll Not Happy

  47. sunny615

    good night for joba:

    5IP 3H 0R 0ER 2BB 9SO

  48. Chris NY

Igawa, try, in fair territory…... I only picked on that because using a term from another sport is as silly as calling the Jeter play blown out of proportion. It was a great play for the reasons others have said, he was going 100 mph without a thought about it because it was a big spot in the game and we needed the out. It was a big play because he did what he always does, anything he can to help the team win.

Pokey Reese? If he made the “same play,” he would have ended up in the same place, in the stands. That’s the point of my explaining momemntum to you….... you made it sound like Jeter dove into the stands to sensationalize a routine play. He was at full-speed and couldn’t stop. If Pokemon did the same thing, he’d have gone in the stands too.

If you think ESPN hasn’t jumped on the Yankee hater banwagon, you should watch it sometime now that you’re thinking about it and it will be more than obvious how far they are from objective when it comes to the Yankees and how in love they are with, well, everyone else….....

  49. Igawa at 1st

    Also Pittsburgh Yankee

This is why pitching can carry teams. Offenses go into slumps and it is important for their pitching to pick them up.
Yes over their last 10 games they have scored over 2-3 runs only 5 times. Their record in those games is 5-5 and they have an era of 3.40. I’m not too scared quite yet.

Also I would be worried to lose Ortiz, but would you not be just as worried to lose ARod.

    A-Rod WPA 2.76
    Ortiz WPA 1.48

  50. saucy

god i hope we score a lot of points tonight :)

  51. Igawa at 1st

Your right I will start watching ESPN and see all the Yankee haters.

But, I did just watch the Jeter play and also found the Pokey play and your right they are different.

Pokey caught the ball in foul territory, and still managed to stop. Jeter caught the ball but his upper body was leaning over which therefore pulled him into the stands.

I am not saying he didn’t have to jump into the stands.

I am not saying that he didn’t give up his body.

I am saying he made a play in ‘fair territory’ that shortstops have made before and the play was blown out of proportion because it was Yanks Red Sox and he had to jump into the stands afterwards.

  52. saucy

as long as we don’t give anything major up, i think i’d take dunn for the rest of ‘08. i think the reds are probably looking for a salary dump in this case.

  53. Igawa at 1st

The play is compared to others that have jumped into the stands to ‘catch’ a ball. I think there is a giant difference here because just think about there thought processes.

Guy jumping into stands to catch ball.
“I have to dive into stands to catch this ball”
Boom he dives in, great play.

    Jeter
“I have to go all out to catch this ball”
    Caught, now
“Oh crap, I will prolly get seriously injured (i.e. knees) if I try and stop, I have to dive into the stands”
Boom he dives in, also a good play.

But I don’t think these two are as comparable as they have been, yes even on ESPN when they had a special of diving into stands to catch a ball (I believe Jeter was like 6 or something).
That is all. I will no longer defend this, you can all tear it apart.

  54. Chris NY

yes, guys dive into the stands and make great plays and get less recognition for it. But not too often are they running full speed from SS into the left field stands and come out bloody. He had like one or two steps to take before diving, not like he caught the ball and ran a mile to the stands, stopping was never an option.

Best catch ever, no. Best diving into the seats play? I have no idea But it was a huge play given the timing and yes, the teams, and it represents the “intangible” things that Jeter does on a daily basis, and that’s why it continues to show up on highlight reels instead of just being a “web gem” on that night’s sportscenter.

Jeter is the face of not just the Yankees, but baseball and everything that’s right about it, that’s why they make such a big deal about that play and the flip play (which was actually more incredible).

  55. Chris NY

an as far as thought process, the point is, there is none….. if he thought about it, he would have slowed down and let it drop. You don’t think, you react. His natural instinct is to catch that ball without a thought about where the wall is.

I’d hardly call catching the ball 2 steps before the stands, after needing to run full speed to get to that point, less reckless than stopping and hopping over the wall to catch a ball in the stands.

How many guys run full speed then dive into the stands? not many. usually it’s a stop and leap, not full speed and “oh …..... better get off the ground.

  56. Scotty

I don’t know about anyone else but it sure is nice seeing clemens sitting in the dugout with his teamates in a Yankee uni. If the captain says he is 35 then he is 35.
