Mike Mussina has his mojo back and the Yankees ran their streak to eight straight. It’s hard to imagine them ever losing again.

That Roger Clemens fella is ready for the Mets tomorrow. This notebook also has an amusing anecdote about Chien-Ming Wang belting a homer in batting practice. Ron Guidry then threw behind him. Don’t mess with the Gator.

Maybe CMW was pimping it too ;o). I thought the Dodgers pitcher was pretty funny.

  2. Rufus

Kuo looked like Barry Bonds after the homer.

  3. Marc

I hope that Andy can go 7 today and then Joe might use Proctor and not Farnsworth for the 8th since he has not pithced in a while.

  4. Nick B.

    Pete,

Any word on Hughes rehab? I’m guessing it will be after the break but has he touched a mound? Half way up the mound? Just wondering if ya got any word?

  5. Joe from Long Island

Peter – or anyone who knows –
IF Giambi gets suspended for not talking to the George Mitchell group, and it holds up (very doubtful), how will it work with him being on the DL? Will the team be penalized one spot on the active roster, as I believe happened when Scott Proctor was suspended three games for throwing at whomever it was?

  6. SJ44

No, they won’t be penalized a spot on the roster.

They will still have their full 25 man roster.

The suspension will also be overturned as soon as an arbitrator hears it. Further adding to Selig’s embarrassment in this entire matter.

i thought that moose could have gotten the 3rd out in the seventh . i want a few quality starts in a row before i get too excited about moose . that being said , i thought bruhney , since he got the k after the walk and hit and there was a 5 run lead , should have stayed to get one more batter . if he got the 2nd out then he could stay for another . i’m not complaining , just my managing philisophy . yet another high quality win

  8. Jeff NJ

Selig probably figures it will be at least partially overturned, however, he is using Giambi as a test balloon to see if they have the power to enforce the Mitchell Investigation also if it sticks he can go after the bigger fish near Fisherman’s Wharf.

Even if it doesn’t fly, Selig protects his own image by saying he did something, but the bad guys in the Players Association shot it down.

  9. Marc

    chris in fairfield,

It was the 8th inning and I agree that Joe doesn’t trust Bruney who gives up a lot of wlaks but always gets through it. We may need Myers today, and we will see if his pitching last night hurts us today.

Another story about Wang: a friend of mine was at a golf tournament a few years ago (I think it was Stottlemeyers’ tourney), pretty soon after Wang was brought up the majors. Wang shows up, all 6′3″, 225 pounds of him, chain smoking (!)… he’d supposedly never picked up a golf club before, then he goes on to win the “longest drive” competition. What a stud.

Selig is embarrassing himself. He’s like the DA that is fighting a losing battle. Can’t get a clean conviction so he tries to turn the screws on a witness. Wonder if we’ll see Law & Order spoof this.

I’m not saying that Jason was right, but whatever goodwill Selig has left is going to erode because of this farce. Jason is one of the good guys, very popular with the fans and players. Think any of the active players like this move?

If Jason is suspended, I’m assuming it’ll be when he comes off the DL. That’s the only good news. We won’t have to watch Jason hobble around the basepads. Hope he still gets paid, though, wouldn’t want Jason to starve.

  12. SJ44

All Selig accomplishes in this is uniting the Players Association and destroying four years of goodwill between he and the MLBA.

For what reason? To have his buddies at USA Today saying he is, “getting tough” on steroids?

He has no legal ground to suspend Giambi. None. He doesn’t come off looking tough. He comes off looking stupid and ignorant of American Labor Law. Not exactly what you want to look like as a commissioner of a major sport.

Suspending Giambi, knowing its going to get overturned, is not getting “tough” on the issue. In fact, its the worst thing he can do because he is going to unite the entire Players Association against him. Once that happens, they can forget about HGH Testing and any other potentially explosive labor issue between the parties ever getting resolved in the owner’s favor.

Selig is a guy desperate for his legacy to be something more than just being the “Steroid Commissioner” He’s going about it the wrong way.

When all is said and done, he will once again be embarrassed and he will unite the Players Association against him on this, and every other tangible issue in the last few years of his reign.

Its shortsighted, dumb and, not in the “best interests of baseball”.

For a guy that wants to “resolve” the steroid issue, he sure has a funny way of going about it. He’s going to overshadow his entire season with this nonsense.

You just wonder if Jason Giambi played for the Brewers (his old team) or the Red Sox (a team with his buddy owners) if he would push so hard on this issue?

  13. tonyb

SJ44, I agree. I also think that Bud is trying to intimidate the players so that it doesn’t come out how prevalent steroids are in the game. I believe that this is why the Mitchel Commission doesn’t have subpoena power – they really DON’T want the true story to come out. They just want to whitewash the situation – Why else would you get Congress involved? All they know how to do is put a suit on, smile for the cameras and beg for money all day.

Above all else, I think MLB is trying to protect its image, and I think that is how he is justifying this boneheaded political motivated maneuver.

In the interests of fairness, it should be noted that I am very jaded about Corporate America and our current government.

  14. tonyb

SJ, forgot to ask: Have you seen any games in Tampa recently? Seems like most of the big prospects i.e. Joba, Ian and Iggy have been moved upstream. Anyone else down there on the watch list?

  15. randyhater

The idea that dusting back Giambi “unites” the union is absurd. They’re already in lock-step and have been for 30 years, which is why they always kick the owner’s asses at the negotiating table. Even someone as blind as Selig has come to realize that appeasement has gotten him nothing but ridicule and if he doesn’t confront these guys in some way he’ll remain the joke that he’s always been.

There’s no way he can let Fatmouth Giambi blatantly blab to the press about his roid use and if nothing else, shaking him up tells the rest of the cheats to pipe down.

  16. Rufus

Selig should just forget about it. Hes going to suspend guys for not talking to Mitchell now? Yeah, that’ll go over well.

They didnt have testing when Giambi was doing it. No sense going back in the past.

  17. Yankee VIP

Just read that Greg Schiano from *Rutgers* is throwing the first pitch tomorrow.

I find this very very exciting and I never thought the day would come that Rutgers gets this kinds of attention.

Pete, anyway you can get some quotes or an interview with him and get his reaction, he is supposedly a lifelong yankee fan

  18. Rufus

Because Selig and the owners always win against the Union.

    Cue laugh track

  19. Peter Abraham

Hughes is still in a boot in Tampa from what I have heard. Joe said something yesterday to the effect of his not even being on the radar.

SJ44 is right about Selig. This is a dog and pony show of the worst kind. He has nothing on Giambi and he knows it. But the Mitchell “investigation” he started is getting nowhere and this is a lame attempt to boost it.

Can’t remember who asked but Mike Myers can pitch every day with how he throws.

  20. mark

TonyB, Tabata, Cervelli, Miranda, McCutchen, and Kontos are all players worth following at Tampa. Kontos struck out 6 in 4 innings last night, his first start since coming off the DL.

  21. Yankee VIP

Selig really is a disgrace to baseball and the fans. I am not really sure what value he brings.

He seems to have screwed up every single decision he makes and his handling of the steroids issues over the years is the worst. instead of standing up and being upfront, he is hiding behind a joke of an investigation.

  22. SJ44

I would add Colin Curtis and Juan Miranda to the list of players to watch at Tampa.

Curtis is an interesting guy. Throws and bats lefthanded, can play both corner OF spots, and is really coming on with the bat. Hitting .405 his last 18 games and has his average up to .311 going into today’s game.

He’s a “gamer” type of kid. Good line drive hitter, excellent OF. Worth watching.

As far as Hughes, One of the Tampa players told me last week he is supposed to be in the boot for at least three more weeks. Sounds like that was a pretty bad injury.

If he is going to be in a boot for three more weeks, we are probably looking at the first week of August (at best) for his return.

Miranda is the guy they signed from Cuba last year. He is a first baseman. Depending on what story you believe, he was either in a Cuban prison for two years or was banished from playing baseball in Cuba for two years because they suspected he was looking to defect.

Either way, he missed two years of playing baseball and is just getting back into the swing of things.

He is second in the league in RBI and has 8 HR’s. That’s a lot in a big ballpark, pitchers friendly league.

He hits and throws left handed.

I saw him play last week and he hit a moon shot, into the wind, for a HR that was pretty impressive.

  23. jennifer

I don’t know how many people realize this but Mitchell the guy running the investigation is part owner or on the board of the red soxs. can you say conflicting interests. Like he wouldn’t sweep anything under the rug if a current or past redsox players name turned up on his desk. I’d like to know how he stays at the head of the investigation with the conflict.

  24. saucy

how’s miranda’s defense? is he strictly a power guy?

a left handed fielding first baseman would be nice.

  25. Eric Schultz

And 3b Marcos Vechionacci is worth watching too in Tampa.

  26. BillyJoBob

How’s Miranda’s defense? He has the right to remain silent, anything he sez can and will be used against him. He has the right to an attorney, especially if Selig/Mitchell call him.

Oh, wait, you were talkin on the field. Sorry, talkin about Selig always rots my brain

  27. tonyb

Gentlemen, thanks for the update on Tampa. I missed the game today due to other obligations, or I would have responded earlier.
