What killed the Yanks tonight was Torre not ordering Phelps, the #8 hitter, to bunt when Matsui and Cano drew walks to lead off the inning. I don't wannna hear "Phelps can't bunt" because if he, a bench player making $600K this year with all the time in the world to practice bunting, can't bunt, then he doesn't belong on this team.

This team basically reverted back to station-to-station waiting for the homerun baseball tonight. Everyone save Clemens and Jeter looked like they didn't want to play this game. Too bad. Beat a real team like the Mets and then the resurgence is real otherwise the 9-game winning streak was b.s.

I actually like Miguel Cairo (I'll never forget the double he hit to score Ruben Sierra with 2 outs against Leskanic in the Jeter dive into the stands game against the Sox to tie the game) but you have to admit that if the Yankes are looking to get better as a team, 1st base is the easiest place to improve.

Everybody out there is looking for bullpen help so that isnt so easy, and it is even harder to find a good solid starter. But I have to believe there is someone out there right now who can approximate Cairo's defensive ability at first base and still contribute more offensively. Phelps is not the answer as he has not shown an ability to hit consistently and his glove is terrible. The Oakland A's never seem to have a problem finding cheap alternatives to play 1st and I think we can do the same if we are willing to look hard enough. I mean, hell, last year we had Carlos Pena in the minors and look at what he is doing this year. He is clearly better with the glove than Cairo or Minky and he sure looks better offensively too.

Need a real RH hitter, and it's no secret....I suspect the plan was to see what's available in July..There was really no one this past offseason.....It's weakness that must be addressed for the second half

Like I said, Perez was what Leiter called wildly effective. The home plate ump had a pretty big zone, and Perez’s pitches were wild in the strike zone. And at 93-95 MPH, those FBs are just not easy to hit. And he throws across his body, so the lefties really have a tough time picking up his pitches.

Perez was wild but his pitches were no where near the strike zone. The usuals Cano, Melky, Cabrera and Cairo had terrible at bats and helped him out every single time. I dont expect them to be all stars but atleast know the strike zone, have decent at bats and if the pitcher is walking you then take the walk. Cashman has continued to build the worse bench ever and it is really showing now.
