Draft signings update

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jun 20, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees, for some silly reason, are the only team in baseball who won’t say what draft picks they have signed.

But from what information I can gather, they have signed:

9. OF Austin Krum
12. RHP Manuel Barreda
13. RHP Nick Chigges
14. 3B Braedyn Pruitt
15. OF Dave Williams
20. SS Ryan Wehrle
21. 2B Justin Snyder
22. RHP Craig Heyer
25. RHP Jason Kiley
26. OF Gary Gattis
27. 3B Brandon Laird
28. RHP Jeff Livek
29. RHP Matt Pilgreen
30. 2B Chris Carrara

what are the numbers before each name? I thought our first pick was at #30….

  2. Mike S. June 20th, 2007 at 9:21 am

They are probably for the round they were picked in.

Chigges pitched in relief for Staten Island last night, as the short season league began their season. In 2 innings, he gave up 3 runs and took the loss.

  3. Jamie June 20th, 2007 at 9:25 am

Chris NY, It’s the round numbers

  4. PooNani June 20th, 2007 at 9:42 am

    missed two

    Damon Sublett
    Ryan Zink

Isiah Howes should sign today since Louisville was just eliminated, and then Morris and Holliday after UC Irvine is knocked out in due time

  5. Fake Rockies Fan June 20th, 2007 at 9:56 am

I’m so excited about the Rockies. Now only 5.5 back of the Dodgers. They’ve won 7 of last 10. I really like their chances, especially with the way they are pitching and killing AL teams like the Sox and Yanks.

  6. Cash Money June 20th, 2007 at 10:03 am

Cashman should get 50 years in jail for fleecing the Phillies and for trading two injury plagued pitching bums for more than a batboy who are currently question marks for returning this year Jaret Wright 60 Day DL and Randy Johnson herniated disc AGAIN

  7. RJPinstripes June 20th, 2007 at 10:05 am

What is the latest on Carmen Angelini, Greg Peavy?

  8. JohnDoe June 20th, 2007 at 10:11 am

PooNani where do you get your information?

  9. Rufus June 20th, 2007 at 10:34 am

Are any of those signed guys players who dropped because of signability and top notch players?

  10. b/c June 20th, 2007 at 11:06 am

    Zink, Krum, and Sublett are.

  11. Greg June 20th, 2007 at 11:39 am

Sublett’s listed on the Staten Island roster, so he must have signed.

  12. Samantha June 20th, 2007 at 11:39 am

ooh im glad we signed dave williams. he went to my highschool.

  13. Wolf In Pinstripes June 20th, 2007 at 11:41 am

Didn’t I see something about us drafting a pitcher that could throw with both arms? I think he was a mid-40′s (round) pick.

  14. Scooter June 20th, 2007 at 11:44 am

    Rufus –
Wehrle is also a big time talent. He dropped b/c he was booted off his college team (attitude problem). He was going to transfer to Cal State Fullerton, but signed with the Yankees instead. He could be a sleeper.

This story was posted on a Yankee forum:
    http://www.americanpress.com/i.....;Itemid=96

    Here’s a snippet:
Angelini said he is still mulling over his decision and said he was never pressured to sign a contract during the visit.

“Nobody brought up signing at all,” Angelini said. “They showed me around and I was able to get a lot of questions answered.

“They did everything first class. I feel I have more knowledge of everything going on and can make a good decision.”

While he hasn’t officially decided on his future, Angelini admitted that the Yankees are hard to say no to.

“Being drafted by the Yankees is something special,” he said. “Being on that field and practicing with the players.

    “It makes an impression.”

  15. SJ44 June 20th, 2007 at 11:57 am

If they sign Angelini, it would really be a coup. Not many players turn down Rice out of high school. They have a one of the highest scholarship acceptance (for baseball players) rates among the top baseball programs in the country.

  16. cinaer June 20th, 2007 at 12:14 pm

“Didn’t I see something about us drafting a pitcher that could throw with both arms? I think he was a mid-40’s (round) pick”

45th Rd Pick, Pat Venditte. He’s a switch pitcher but all indication is that he wont sign and will return to college next year.

  17. Jamie June 20th, 2007 at 12:21 pm

Does anyone know if Dellin Betances is starting today for the home opener for Staten Island?

  18. Clayton June 20th, 2007 at 12:21 pm

Remember the MLB tells teams when they can release the details of a signing and they like to wait to later in the signing period to show guys who went over slot value, which are most of the Yankee picks.

  19. Scooter June 20th, 2007 at 12:22 pm

    Pete
I know the Yankees have gotten some flak from the Commissioner’s office regarding paying draftees more than their slot money

It’s interesting that there is little information about guys most likely to be paid above slot (who of course are also the toughest signs)

My bet is that Brackman will be given the summer off and sign at the deadline for above slot money.

Yankees might let Carpenter play in the Cape Cod League for a while before signing him

Not sure what Suttle will do

Gotta think Weems and/or Romine will sign soon – I think the Yankees need catching in GCL and Staten Island

  20. Fake Rockies Fan June 20th, 2007 at 12:22 pm

    Gut feeling, Angelini won’t sign.

  21. Joe_Southern_ NH June 20th, 2007 at 12:29 pm

    Another for your list

  22. SJ44 June 20th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

I think guys like Peavey, Suttle, Weems and Angelini will require well over the slot money to sign, if they sign at all.

Carpenter? Oppenheimer said he is going to watch him in the Cape League before deciding whether or not they will offer him.

Romaine should come in at, or around, the slot money in his round.

Expect Bud to hold up the signings for most of the summer (like he did last two year with Kennedy, Chamberlain, Melancon and Robertson) to any Yankee draft pick that signs above slot before approving them. Its all he can do as he can’t negate the signings. That will pretty much wipe out those kids chances of playing in Staten Island or the Gulf Coast League this season.

They will send some of them to Hawaii in the fall, like they did with Melancon, Robertson and Chamberlain last year and go from there.

Brackman? I would be shocked if he signed prior to the 11th hour of the August 15 deadline. As he did with Dice-K last year, I expect Boras to take this to the end. Especially since, its doubtful he was going to pitch this summer.

  23. Russell NY June 20th, 2007 at 12:43 pm

    Damon to DL? Suprise!

  24. sw June 20th, 2007 at 12:51 pm

    http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_6182156

“The Yankees have three of the best players in baseball and their payroll is high, so maybe we won’t get any credit, but we don’t need it,” Torrealba said. “All we need to do is keep winning. Our goal is to make the playoffs. I know it’s kind of early to say it, but that’s the goal.”

    Only three? Arod,Jeter, Mariano.

  25. SJ44 June 20th, 2007 at 12:53 pm

Is Damon going on the DL? After his last AB last night, its probably for the best right. He looks to be really hurting with that rib cage injury.

We can’t have it both ways though. We can’t kill Carl Pavano for not trying to play through an injury and then kill Damon for trying to do just that.

Its pretty clear the guy is hurting but he is a gamer and wants to help the team. I can’t kill the guy for that. At least the effort and heart are in the right place.

Hopefully, two weeks or so gets him healthy. If he needs from now until the AS Break, so be it.

They need a healthy Damon in the second half to have a chance for the playoffs. The offense isn’t the same when he isn’t in the lineup at his best.

  26. TKinDC June 20th, 2007 at 1:13 pm

I’m looking for confirmation on Damon – - – is it anywhere online?

  27. JohnDoe June 20th, 2007 at 1:14 pm

    Wehrle signed

  28. Jeremy June 20th, 2007 at 1:16 pm

With Damon on the DL, who is our DH now? Cairo? Excuse me while I breath in some carbon monoxide.

  29. fg June 20th, 2007 at 1:17 pm

I would labeled Damon’s is a bust… He used the Yankees money. He came in camp overweight and out of shape. Cashman is so stupid signing him to four year deal. He can’t throw in the outfield and can’t cover anyground anymore..

  30. saucy June 20th, 2007 at 1:19 pm

it’s all randy johnson’s fault. all of it.

  31. mel June 20th, 2007 at 1:33 pm

If I was Angelini, it’d be a no-brainer. Go to school and roll the dice in another draft? A chance to follow in #2′s cleats? I say he’ll sign.

Re: Damon. He’s not a bust…yet. Re: Randy Johnson, looks like Cashman did the right thing by letting RJ go home.

  32. SJ44 June 20th, 2007 at 1:38 pm

How is Damon a “bust”? Was he a bust last year?

Some of you guys crack me up.

The guy had a great year last year and has been playing hurt this year.

He played all of last season with a broken foot and nobody was calling him a bust.

Players get hurt. Deal with it. The key is to get him healthy.

If you are going to second guess everything, who exactly was going to play CF last year? Don’t give me made up trades. Give me a name of somebody you KNOW was going to play CF last year. Then, compare their numbers to Damon’s last year. You will see quickly, he was the Yankees best alternative last year.

Enough with the whining. When he is healthy, he’s one of the best leadoff hitters in the game.

If it takes a few weeks to get him healthy, so be it.

Cashman made the right move signing him last year and nobody was whining about it. If you are going to start now, you are nothing more than a second guesser since, they have ZERO other alternatives for CF last year.

If he has a big second half, everybody will say what a “genius” Cashman was for signing him. Just as they were saying last year when he kicked the Red Sox butt in that 5 game series.

  33. TKinDC June 20th, 2007 at 1:46 pm

Damon was just about the best lead-off hitter in the AL last year. He’ll probably have to switch positions or DH but offensively he is still capable.

I was disappointed too when he showed up overweight but I think he’ll be ok. I still haven’t seen any confirmation he is DLed.

  34. Chris NY June 20th, 2007 at 1:47 pm

    Thanks, Jamie.

A switch pitcher? Never heard of such a thing… can he pitch *well* with both arms? That’s pretty cool…..

Johnny Damon is not a bust after the year he had last year. he’s had his moments this year despite injuries all year. Humorous how people give up on a guy after 2.5 months of INJURIES when he played hurt and played well all of last year.

  35. Chris NY June 20th, 2007 at 1:49 pm

Damon showed up overweight to ST because he was resting his mangled foot and chose to try and get that healthy instead of doing the cardio and so forth that he normally would.

  36. mel June 20th, 2007 at 2:02 pm

You guys make it sound like he showed up looking like Curt Schilling. Wasn’t he only like 10-15 pounds over what he wanted?

Funny that we don’t miss Damon in center field, but we miss his spot in the lineup. I don’t know how much of Melky hitting leadoff I can take. What’s Cairo’s avg up to now? If it’s as good as Damon’s then I think it’d be worth the gamble of batting Miggy leadoff, can’t be much worse than Cano in that spot.

Would have been nice to know that Damon was going to the DL before they DFA’ed Phelps. I would’ve kept Melky in CF, Cairo at 1B, Phelps as the DH. Phillips as backup 1B. But if Andy and Cairo can play multiple infield positions, then Alex, Derek, and Cano can also DH. Of course, it looks like Jorge plays 1st when Wil is catching. Nice play by DJ & Jorge to get out Taveras yesterday.

  37. fg June 20th, 2007 at 2:03 pm

It nearly been two months, Damon’s still whining and nagging about his injury. I don’t see him producing for two freaking months. He’s battting .250, I thought He’s the best leadoffhitter better than Ichiro when He signed. If He wants to be a good teammate, He would ask Joe to place him on Dl..

  38. Mike S. June 20th, 2007 at 2:11 pm

Yes, Pat Venditte of Creighton was drafted by the Yanks in the 45th round. A switch-pitcher.

Think of the possibilities. He can throw both ways during a game…or he can be your righty setup man one day and your lefty long man the next. You can carry an extra position player since Venditte takes the role of two pitchers.

    (tongue firmly in cheek)

  39. SJ44 June 20th, 2007 at 2:12 pm

He’s not whining about his injury. You are whining about him.

The guy is frustrated about being hurt. Why is that a bad thing? Tells me he cares. Isn’t that what we want from players?

We kill Pavano for not trying to help the team by playing through an injury and we are going to kill Damon for trying to help the team by playing through it? Does that make any sense?

The guy hit a HR and was a catalyst in the win on Sunday.

Its not a coincidence that when he hits, they win.

He’s batting .250 because he is hurt. Why is that so hard to comprehend?

Perhaps he doesn’t want to go on the DL because he feels his replacement won’t necessarily make the team better. Perhaps the Yankees feel the same way.

Do you really believe Miguel Cairo or Kevin Thompson are better hitters than Johnny Damon?

The only people whining about Johnny Damon are the people who are so Red Sox obsessed, they can’t offer any objective commentary on him.

  40. Chris NY June 20th, 2007 at 2:13 pm

    “whining and nagging..”

    huh? who are you watching?

  41. Mike S. June 20th, 2007 at 2:13 pm

If fg wants to be a good blogger, he should learn what grammar is.

  42. Chris NY June 20th, 2007 at 2:14 pm

    well said, SJ..

  43. JLB June 20th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

SJ44, I like what you say most of the time, but I think you are wrong about this one. A lot of people had problems with the Damon signing. It was for to many years for to much money. Everyone I talked to knew it. Also to say tell me who for sure would be playing CF last year makes no sense. We have no idea who the Yankees would have gotten instead. They probably wouldn’t have put up the numbers that Damon did last year but this isn’t a one year deal. So because we didn’t have a better alternative to play CF makes it ok to handcuff this team with a four year deal? WOW. With that logic the Giambi signing was a good one too huh? I like Damon, this isn’t a bash Damon post. If Damon can stay healthy and his skills don’t deminish through the four years then yes it was a good signing. But if we only get one good year with three injury plagued years then its not and so far I say 1 good, 1/2 not. You think he will stay health for the four years? After just the first we are already taking him out of CF and talking first base, thats a bad sign. 4 years 52 mill for one year a CF the rest at DH, first base? That makes for a bad signing.

  44. kjnewk June 20th, 2007 at 3:19 pm

Damon is not by far my favorite but to say he is not a gamer or even attempt to complain about him is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read. Would you rather Damon and his attitude and history or someone like Pavono who did absolutely nothing for us but take up a roster spot while taking all the money Cashman offered out of George’s pocket? Also, I have watched Kevin Thompson quite a bit here in Tampa and do not underestimate him yet.

  45. kjnewk June 20th, 2007 at 3:24 pm

    JLB,

I agree with you for the most part, but – and dont shoot me here -but what about Bernie? I am not a big Damon fan by any means but I agree I refuse to bash him the way he has been playing thurt this year and how he played last year here.

  46. Asst Manager June 20th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

Anyone calling Damon a bust needs to have their head examined.

  47. Asst Manager June 20th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

There is a reason why the Yankees drafted those high end guys. It wasn’t to look good. They drafted them with the intention of signing them.

  48. Don August 4th, 2009 at 5:35 pm

have the yankees signed the junior college Draftee Joe Talerico yet?, I have seen this kid play! he is a 5 tool player with tremendous speed.
