Postgame audio from Joe Torre

This game reminded me of the 6-4 loss at Chicago on June 4. The Yankees were starting a road trip in another time zone and didn’t seem interested in playing until it was too late.

Over 162, it happens. They were 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position. Couple of hits in the second inning and Josh Fogg could have been finished.

Jorge Posada on playing first base: “I didn’t have any groundballs hit to me. Thank God.

Mike Mussina on the home run by Yorvit Torrealba: “With my National League inexperience I didn’t think about who was on deck. I probably would have pitched a little differently had I thought about it.”

Here is some audio from Joe Torre:

Peter-Everyone keeps talking about how the team has been in a better mood and had higher spirits since winning again but I’ve notices Joe seems to be a lot happier and joking around with you guys during this streach as well. Have you noticed that or am I just reading into stuff too much?

Thanks, Pete… with no postgame tonight, the audio is much appreciated.

Thanks Pete. I know from experience of being an Army brat how time zone changes can affect your body. It has to catch up. I have a feeling they will be in full force the rest of the games. The Mets first game was also scoreless and the next games were unbelievable. The lineup could have been a little different from the guys. Who knows. I just don’t think they played a lousy game. Have to give some credit to the Rockies too.
Do we know yet who’s 1b tomorrow?

Its pretty pathetic that this yankee lineup could only get one run on four hits in seven innings against a mediocre pitcher like Fogg in a park like Coors. I didnt watch the game (only listened to it on the radio) but I cant imagine that Fogg was pitching like an ace tonight. I would have to think it is more of the yankees not looking good at the plate than Fogg’s velocity and movement. What will it take for the yanks to get teixera and end this reject parade at first base experiment? I would be willing to part with clippard and various other minor league starters if it meant getting an all star, gold glover at first. There is just no real options other than teixera that we can get that would be a tremendous upgrade for this lineup besides him.

    Dave:

What makes you think Clippard and “various minor league starters” are going to bring Teixeira back If one of thoe various guys is Hughes, maybe. Clippard doesn’t have that much value.

I don’t know if this has been mentioned but what if the Yankees were to offer paying some more or all of Arod’s contract for Tex plus some combination of minor leaguers. Maybe the Rangers are hoping that Arod opts out but if he doesn’t then that ties up a lot of money for Texas in the next 3 years.

So wouldn’t that be the catchers job to go up and remind him who’s on deck. Can’t kill moose for that. But I believe you can kill Nieves. He should have gone out there and said lets pitch around him the pitcher is on deck, or at least remind him who’s on deck.

since when is fogg’s name cy young . wtf .

Chris that is what many fail to see. The team simply did not hit last night. The only way you can win scoring 1 run is to have your pitcher throw a shut out.

If anyone here was told Mike would give up 3 runs over 6 innings, every single person would have taken it. They would have figured Fogg would give up 6 and we’d coast to a win. Well he gave up 1 run! Hopefully they do better tonight!

Captain Obvious Award: “The only way you can win scoring 1 run is to have your pitcher throw a shut out.” (sorry, couldn’t resist…)

Fact is, they couldn’t hit a lick last night, but this Fogg guy also shut down Boston, so he’s got to have some ability when he’s on. Either way, we had our chances and didn’t come through. I get that the time zone affects you, but these are professionals and we shouldn’t have to assume a loss on every road trip that changes time zones (especially considering Chicago is only a *1 hour* difference).

:P to Chris. I had to state the obvious since some don’t see it.

  12. Time zone reality June 20th, 2007 at 11:12 am

Believe it or not, ballplayers say that, in terms of adjusting to time and geographical differences, the SECOND game of a road trip is usually the worst.

  13. Jennifer June 20th, 2007 at 11:58 am

Well they didn’t get there that late on Monday.

  14. Chris NY June 20th, 2007 at 2:10 pm

    fair enough, jennifer… lol.

You make a good point about Monday. This wasn’t the same as going from Boston to Chicago in the middle of the night then playing the next day. This time, they had Monday to get settled/adjusted.

I travel for work, not often betwen time zones, but I have done it. yes, it’s a pain and you don’t feel like yourself at first. But that’s no excuse for being asleep at the wheel. Let them be half-asleep, they still should have beaten Colorado.

A big moment in the game last night came in the second. Posada on 3rd, 1 out, Cano up and Nieves on deck. Having Nieves in the lineup was like having two pitchers in the lineup. Cano swings at the first pitch, grounds out, run doesn’t score, and Nieves then strikes out, forcing Mussina to lead off the 3rd.

Gotta take some pitches there, Robbie.
