(This just happens to be the 15 songs that came up on shuffle today. I have 6,200+ songs on my iPod. I’m chargrined that more hip-hop and Hank Williams isn’t on this list because that is what I’ve been listening to lately.)
Stuff I’ve discovered lately: The alternative band Mando Diao. They have a great song called “Welcome Home Luc Robitaille.” Thanks to Mark Hale, the fine Mets writer of the Post, for bringing that band to my attention. Check them out. … I’m giving Ryan Adams a chance again. His new single “Two” is prettty good. … The iTunes originals version of “Little Triggers” by Elvis Costello is fascinating. … Yeah, I downloaded “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey after the last episode of The Sopranos. … First Time by Lighthouse. … I’m Not Sorry by the Pigeon Detectives.

Pete, you like the Gentlemen??? I must say I have a new-found respect for you. Although, “Brass City Band” and “Ladies and Gentlemen” are in my opinion much better albums than “Blondes…” You should check out Mike Gent’s other band, the Figgs. I’ve been listening to those guys for 15 years, they are great.
15 Im listening to. They’re all worth a look if you have the time too.

“California Stars” is from Mermaid Avenue, the collaboration between Billy Bragg and Wilco to write music for unearthed Woody Guthrie lyrics. That song in particular, however, is all Wilco.
I’m appalled that you didn’t already have Don’t Stop Believing on your iPod.

i listen to thin lizzy and dance nude.
I’m pretty out of it these days, but you can’t be completely off-base if you’ve got Steve Earle and Elvis Costello in there. I was listening to Little Feat’s Waiting for Columbus on my drive in this morning.
Well, I typed Elvis but meant Billy Bragg. Who can tell those brits apart?
I posted my list, but it apparently had too many ’80s songs and hair metal tunes to get through the spam catcher. That’s probably good for whatever reputation I might have. I swear there are other things on my iPod, including virtually everything Elvis Costello ever released.
Me three:
1. I’m not in Love – 10cc
2. If you could read your mind – Clinic
3. Piano Fire – Sparklehorse
4. Handful of Heaven – Assistants
5. Ankle Injuries – Fujiya and Miyagi
6. Living Thing – ELO
7. Our Life is not a movie or maybe – Okkervil River
8. Night & Day – Al B Sure
9. Double Shadow – Junior Boys
10. Get the Balance Right – Depeche Mode
11. National Anthem of Nowhere – Apostle of Hustle
12. I’m Sorry – Feist
13. Postcards from Italy – Beirut
14. The Well and the Lighthouse – Arcade Fire
15. I saw the Light – Todd Rundgren
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Let’s not judge each other. As my boss at the record store I used to work at always said “there’s an ass for every seat.”.
You need some singer-songwriter there Pete. How about Harry Chapin, of Cats in the Cradle fame?
Bruce did a great tribute version of Remember When the Music, too, which might be available on iTunes
Pete
If you like The Gentlement you gotta hear Mike Gent’s band The Figgs – try Sucking in Stereo – best power pop of the last few decades – that’s a promise.
Cliff, I’m already a big fan of your blog, and now that I see you have love for Hall & Oates, I’m an even bigger fan. I started listening to Hall & Oates again because my girlfriend and I dressed up as them for Halloween (she was Oates). It started as a joke, but those guys know how to write pop songs like few others. Another lesser know Hall & Oates song that is pretty good is “When the Morning Comes”.
I’m a Spoon fan as well.
I was also going to call out Peter for the California Stars attribution, but you took care of it for me.
I’m doing albums at the moment – i guess i’m kinda eclectic taste wise
Neon – Neon
Buckcherry – 15
The Cars – Greatest Hits
Motley Crue – Red, White and Crue
Powderfinger – Fingerprints
Guns N Roses – Best Of
Tesla – Best of
I tend to stick with best ofs when it comes to my music on my player – .
I should probably go and hide now that I’ve divulged my musical tastes (or lack of) I have everything from The Beatles to Neon, lol
Check out:
The Push Stars
Elbow (from the UK)
Guster (I know their drummer)
DMan77 has a good thing going with the Gipsy Kings.
Peter, “California Love” is a hot joint but don’t ever get caught rapping along with ‘Pac behind the wheel like a carload of girls caught me the other day. Although I think I do it justice, it’s still embarrassing.
For the record, “Recognize from Long Beach to Rosecrans, to Sac-town, the Bay area and back down, Cali is where they put the mack down!” was the offending passage.
And what would a trip to Colorado be without some John Denver?
Alright.. i’m not the only one with some ELO on mine.
listen to some right said fred
I noticed ‘Read My Mind’ by The Killers was in that list. I only recently “discovered” that band, which is kind of strange considering they’re from Vegas, where I live. I like their stuff, but I think it is best listened to as a whole album, and not as individual songs. Some music just works better when enjoyed in the whole context of an album.
Q: Why did the farmer start a punk band?
A: He was tired of Haulin-Oates
ba-dum-tish….
I’m in!
Selfish Ways – Dogs
Landslide – Fleetwood Mac
I Can’t Win – The Strokes
Music When the Lights Go Out – The Libertines
Numb (The Soul Assassins Mix) – U2
Get Up Stand Up (Live) – Bob Marley
Marlene – Last Train Home
Old Cypress Tree – Charlie Sexton
Asleep At The Trigger – Autolux
Could It Be I’m Falling in Love – The Spinners
Digging the new Ryan Adams record, has a definite Gram Parsons vibe. Sounds like a solid effort.
CDs currently getting repeated plays on my iPod:
“Best Of Van Morrison Vol. 3″ – Van Morrison
“At My Age” – Nick Lowe
“Memory Almost Full” – Paul McCartney
Pete,
Check out Jeffrey Dean Foster’s Million Star Hotel. I think you will enjoy.
http://www.jeffreydeanfoster.com
Also, get that last.fm account and you won’t need to post your play list.
It would be cool to know what the players listen to. Maybe a future topic for the blog.
Pete, check out the new Wilco album “Sky Blue Sky”. I think you’d definitely like it. Also, since Mehdi mentioned it, the new Feist album “The Reminder” is terrific, as was her previous album “Let It Die.
Ryan New album is solid Pete. still not sure about him live though. It’s definitly worth a listen. I like the track ” Halloween Head ” good hook, better chorus.
Worth a listen and more.
Also like the new ALO album, good jamband that doesn’t jam (on the album). So right off the bat they are more digestible than SCI for instance.
Lastly Kings of Leons’ new disc “Because of the times” is on repeat in my player, good rock n roll, also pays Springsteen his tribute. Check out the first track on the album – “knocked up” and tell me that it doesn’t sound like something pilfered from inside springsteen’s head.
Ar
OOPS! Meant Ryan Adams new Album is Solid.
Also forgot to mention that Amy Winehouse is more than just rehab, her disc is pretty good.
Aaron
Pete…you gotta check out “Drive By Truckers” and “Centro-Matic”…just “youtube” em if you don;t believe me.
“Further On…” on the Live in Dublin is excellent
I second that “Drive by truckers” are worth buying even if you’ve only heard 1 tune. good live too.
California Stars is an unpublished Woody song, that Billy Bragg and Wilco brought to life. This song is sung by Jeff Tweedy from Wilco. Wilco is the best band out there today.
I listened to November Rain on my ipod today as well.
You should have had don’t stop believin a long time ago, Pete.

Throwing Muses – the Real Ramona
Morphine – Cure for Pain

Pixies were the best album to come out of the Mass.
Album? I meant group. I need to take a nap before the game tonight.
