Clemens going for No. 350

Peter Abraham
June
21

Roger Clemens is going for his 350th victory today. The last pitcher in baseball to get to 350 was Warren Spahn, who reached the plateau on Sept. 29, 1963.

His catcher that day? A 22-year-old kid from Brooklyn named Joe Torre.

All-time victories
1. Cy Young 511
2. Walter Johnson 417
3. Pete Alexander, Christy Mathewson 373
5. Pud Galvin 364
6. Warren Spahn 363
7. Kid Nichols 361
8. Roger Clemens 349

  1. KingRoger

Roger should be at the top of this list, the number one all time pitcher on roids.

  2. Jamie

Agree with that. He’s on my team now so I don’t care at all, I encourage it.

  3. Jeff NJ

Wow, that is an interesting tidbit on Spahn. I can’t believe it has been 44 years since a player got to 350. I wonder who will be next?

  4. Bill

I don’t count the first 5 as they were in an era (deadball) where all statistics should be thrown out.

  5. DesignatedBlogger

Maybe Torre will activate himself and catch this game, too.

  6. Marc

    Torre is better than Nieves!

  7. jw

i bet Torre will hit better than Nieves

  8. Rocketfan

Hey Numbnut #1 (KingRoger) and #2 (Jamie)

Roger Clemens is not on steroids and anyone who says he is is just another bitter, jealous, envious, probably Yankee-hating bitch who wishes he/ she could accomplish what Clemens has accomplished in life which is excellence in his profession. Where were people screaming he was on steroids when he reeled off back-to-back Cy Young Awards with Toronto in 1997-8 after 4 years of mediocrity with Boston (1993-97)? Nowhere. I’d think a near has-been which Clemens was by 1997 would resort to that. Where was the talk of steroids when he won 2 more Cy’s with the Yanks and Houston? Nowhere. Let’s accuse everyone who has great success of cheating.

What’s next, Mariano Rivera is on steroids?

Yeah, let’s tell a lie so many times it becomes the truth like people do with Bonds who is not on steroids because no one has proved he took them and I’m not buying the word of some two-bit rat ex-S.F. trainer who set up Bonds et.al. I’m also not buying he that cheated after M.L.B. sportswriters voted him N.L.M.V.P. 4 years in a row -they didn’t catch on to him taking them for 4 years? Not buying their anti-Bonds garbage esp. when they still count his homeruns like they’re legit.

I love how cuz an older player is taking excellent care of his body, people automatically assume it’s cuz of steroids.

  9. saucy

i always thought it was odd that baseball managers wear uniforms. can you imagine some other sports if their coaches wore football, basketball, and hockey jerseys? it’s kind of silly really.

  10. Who's afraid?

Anyone scared that Clemens is pitching tonight?

  11. Marc

Clemens is pitching TODAY at 3.

  12. jennifer

At least the afternoon at work should go by quickly!

  13. Mike S.

Bill, you prove that you are a complete idiot. Do you know that besides tossing 110 shutouts in his career (a record that will never be approached), that Walter Johnson LOST 26 games 1-0?

He won 417 games despite pitching for Washington, a team that gave us the phrase “first in war, first in peace and last in the American League”.

    From Wikipedia:
Johnson’s record total of 3,509 strikeouts stood for more than 55 years until Nolan Ryan, Steve Carlton, and Gaylord Perry (in that order) all surpassed it in 1983. Johnson is now 9th on the all-time strikeout list, but his total must be understood in its proper context. Among his pre-World War II contemporaries, only two men were within a thousand strikeouts of Johnson: runner-up Cy Young with 2,803 (more than 800 behind) and Tim Keefe at 2,562. He thrice won the triple crown for pitchers (1913, 1918 and 1924).

Johnson was a better-than-average hitter for a pitcher, compiling a career batting average of .235, including a record .433 average in 1925.

Since you want to throw out all dead ball era statistics, why not go all the way? Just scrap all baseball pre-1947. After all, the leagues were lily white until then. I guess we should just disregard all of Ty Cobb’s and Babe Ruth’s records too.

  14. nyy

A day after SOSAROID hit 600th home run, ROGEROID is going to get his 350th win. Interestingly enough SOSAROID hit his first home runs against ROGEROID.

  15. jennifer

Geez one look at this blog and you can tell school is out. Their parents need to put a lock and key on the computer!

  16. SJ44

No doubt Jennifer. The game thread was last night was an indication that the American education system is really in the toilet.

So many morons, staying up so late at night, writing such nonsense.

Two losses in a row and everybody with an baseball IQ at the remedial level comes out.

The Yankees have run into a hot team. The Rockies have won 19 of their last 26, beat Boston 2 of 3 at Fenway, with Fogg and Francis (the guys who shut down the Yankees) beating both Schilling and Beckett.

Sometimes, you run into a hotter team than you and they beat your butts. That’s what has happened the last two nights.

Unfortunately, the “kiddies” that post in this blog don’t understand that in a 162 game season, you aren’t going to win every night and not going to win every series.

  17. Stuart

no all these 12 yr old no that a guy who works out for only about 30 yrs 3 hours a day and has been great since he is about 18 is a cheater. they saw it on a video game..

I saw him pitch when he was in toronto he killed the yanks. this guy has been a monster for only about 20 yrs.. these clowns that post think guys like tim lincecum after 4 good starts are great. forget roger has only been off the charts for about 17 of his 20 or so seasons screw consistency we like sizzle nowadays…..

to mention sammy sosa in the same breath of clemens just shows how stupid some people are… call clemens in fron of congress I am quite confident of his response………..

the guy is still good and he only throws 92 know, he has 2 things these morons will never have and that is brains(he knows how to pitch) and heart……

  18. Ryan

    OUCH!

Girardi turned down the O’s job. What does that say about your franchise when you can’t get a color man out of the booth to be a big league manager?

  19. Jeremy

Am I a bad baseball fan for not knowing who Kid Nichols is/was?

  20. Stuart

I am glad Girardi turned them down. If torre goes after this yr I want Girardi

  21. SJ44

It says he is waiting on the Yankees job. Smart move on his part, IMO. No sense tying yourself up in a dead end job when the Yankees job may be available after this season.

  22. dude

So Girardi turned down the O’s job, you think these past two games got his juices flowing?

  23. jennifer

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=2911691

Joe G turned down the O’s job.

  24. Jeremy

The O’s are one of those teams that looks like it will never be good. Unlike Perlozzo, Girardi has a MOY under his belt and can afford to be picky. I agree, smart move.

  25. jennifer

Everyone saw the news at the same time!!

SJ44 I took one look at the blog last night and left. There was so much bickering going on back and forth and no real baseball talk. It was so nice and pleasant here when we had the long streak (which to those idiots) was only 2 days ago. we’ve still won something like 7 of 10! .700 winning percentage is pretty darn good!

Today we can gain back 1/2 game since the soxs are off!! Hopefully Roger continues to take strides in the right direction and we win. We’ve seen Lopez before so we should be okay.

  26. SJ44

No because, unlike many fans, baseball people like Girardi don’t make decisions based on two days of baseball.

Its why I am thankful many of the folks who lose their minds in here after every loss are not in a decisionmaking position with the Yankees.

If they were, this team would never win a game.

  27. Chicago Dave

Joe’s no dummy. Baltimore would be a horrible, hopeless situation for any manager to step into right now. It’s a situation that’s bound to chew up and spit out anyone (no matter how talented) that takes the job right now.

  28. 'Annie Savoy'

I’m glad Girardi turned down the Orioles job – my brother lives in Maryland and says that no one can work with Oriole managment these days.

  29. Skinny

I worked for ESPN and it was leaked to us that Clemens did indeed test positive for steroids but baseball couldn’t have that news come out because it would destroy all credibility to they kept it hush hush and made him serve his 50 game suspension during the time when he was “out of baseball.” It is known as the Clemens conspiracy Theory.

He is 44 going on 45, look at his body…

It’s definetly not too far fetched.

  30. SJ44

    Jennifer,

I did the same thing. Its amazing how some of these folks can get through a season.

I have this vision of people sitting in front of their computers……

One hand near the keyboard, the other hand holding a razor close to their wrists….

“Do I slit or write”? They ponder that question before every half inning.

I love the “season’s over” posts on June 20. If the season was over on June 20, the Yankees would have roughly HALF of their world championships.

Its been a struggle all year and two weeks of good baseball is just a start. They just have to keep grinding and see what happens.

With the Wild Card, you are never too far out of it. Just need to put some wins together on the rest of this roadtrip.

  31. Jeremy

Then again, once the Orioles get Jaret Wright and Kris Benson back, the rest of the division may as well just surrender.

  32. Chicago Dave

How come we still have Red Sox fans on the blog today? You guys just can’t give it up, can you? Yes, the whole Yankee team is on ‘roids…That make you feel better? If that’s the case, though, better start checking Manny and Ortiz… Don’t delude yourselves that your team is the only “pure” team in baseball…

  33. Why, Jesus, why?

Why in God’s name is Kei Igawa scheduled for the start on Friday?

  34. SJ44

That’s the same thing as the Michael Jordan Gambling Conspiracy. I don’t buy it.

Show me proof, then I’ll buy it. All these supposed “leaks” are BS.

Put it another way. To the folks who “know” this, are they willing to say it under oath?

If not, shut up and stop spreading rumors.

If Roger Clemens tested positive for steroids, NOBODY is keeping that out of the media.

  35. Chicago Dave

It doesn’t really jive that Clemens would be on ‘roids. Roid use tends to break the body down at a much younger age than it otherwise would start to fail. Just look at Bonds, Sosa, McGwire, etc., etc. Clemens is in his mid-40s, and has never had any of the “typical” steroid-related injuries that the rest of these guys have had. So, though I’d never say never, I’d say it’s a very dubious case against him at this point.

  36. Skinny

Because he is better than Tyler Clippard and Matt DeSalvo. They got him “fixed” in AAA.

  37. Chicago Dave

I’m sure we’re all very eager to see just how “fixed” Igawa is when he pitches against San Fran… Should be interesting.

  38. Jamie

I am a huge Yankee Fan and I have been posting on this blog since last summer, so please lay off the crap about the kiddies coming out and ruining this blog. Just because I’m not on the other side of 30 does not mean I do not know about baseball and cannot see a user of steroids when they appear.

Rocketfan, wake the _ _ _ _ up. The whole innocent until proven guilty thing is ludicrous. This isn’t the judicial system, this is a sports blog where opinions are at a constant flow – as they should be – and my opinion of Clemens being on steroids isn’t far fetched.

They guy is about to be 45 years old, has previously been implicated by a known steroid user – Grimsley – , and has had a much better ERA later in his career. I understand he was in the NL Central, but to have the lowest ERA in the NL, and if I’m not mistaken the league? Please. I don’t care if he takes the stuff since he plays on the Yankees and is helping my team, but to completely turn my head to what’s going on is just foolish. When Giambi was first implicated and wasn’t PROVEN GUILTY IN A COURT OF LAW (he manned up and told the truth, just like Bonds should have done), I still rooted for him but didn’t pretend that he wasn’t on something.

I disagree with you on the whole Clemens thing, but to even bring Bonds into the equation ruins your entire argument. Bringing Barry Bonds up and trying to convince me or any other baseball fan that isn’t a San Fran fan that he didn’t take the stuff is impossible.

  39. nettles

Gee, Skinny, what’s next? The “Grassy Knoll, second-shooter” theory? What a load of BS.

  40. Jennifer

Jeremy Curiously what is the story with Jaret? I thought I heard he might retire.

  41. Chicago Dave

Why should we trust anything that Jason Grimsley says? Just curious what the rationale is there…

  42. Chicago Dave

Though I’m sure he’ll continue to rehab and try to pitch again, for all intents and purposes Jaret Wright is done. He’s been done for several years now, but he just won’t admit it to himself and retire. I’m not a huge fan of Cashman, but getting rid of Wright was definitely a good move.

  43. nyy

We can beat up on Rodrigo Lopez and Clemens will get his 350th Win. Giants are one of the worst team in the baseball this season. Shoul dbe able to sweep giants. And the Orioles are a joke of an organization. Another sweep there. The Sox have a brutal road trip. So we can be with 6.5 games of Sox by the end of the month. They have to take advantage of the soft & easy schedule.

  44. jennifer

I believe Jason Grimlsey said thru his lawyer that it wasn’t true that Pettitte and Clemens were named.

  45. aNdYam

    Skinny

It is a lot less far fetched that someone would make it up to sabotage a career.

    Which is obviously what happened.

  46. Chicago Dave

    nyy-

Don’t forget that, in the San Fran series, the Yanks will again be facing pitchers that they’ve never seen before, which has not been a good thing for their offense this year. Also, they actually have some good young pitchers… So, all-in-all, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Yanks got whacked in that series as well. We need to start playing (familiar) AL teams again…then we can get back on a roll.

  47. Sw

Fat Actress “38 pitches” on Roids.. His breaking down infront on our eyes… :)

  48. nyy

    Chicago Dave,

I agree with u but this where we have to take advantage as Sox will be facing Padres(Young, Maddux, Peavy) and then will face Seattle Mariners.

  49. NYY, what are you smoking?

    NYY,

What’s with the “Sox have a brutal road trip” business? San Diego is a good team, but “brutal”? Don’t think so. Seattle? Barely better than the Yanks.

Maybe it would be brutal for the Yankees, but the Sox are THE competition this year. They’re the team to beat.

The Sox have generally been playing more difficult opponents than the Yankees have, right? And they’ve been more successful, right? Teams will surge and teams will slump: the Sox’ recent losing “streak” was white noise in a great year. Similarly, the Yankees’ winning streak, as we are seeing, was also noise in what has been a sub-par year.

Stop focusing on how the Red Sox are faring in the standings. Root for your team.

Three days ago you probably would’ve counted on a sweep of the Rockies, too.

  50. Bill

Should the Yankees go after Bradley now that he has been DFA’d? He’s having a decent year, and I think if you put him in a great lineup like the Yankees, he could really be a strong asset.

    What do you guys think?

  51. Ryan

i hope this works out better than the chase for 300.

  52. Bill

Milton Bradley for those who were wondering.

  53. Marius

If clemens were on steroids, wouldn’t he not lose much on his fastball and not have to rely on finesse pitching?
His body shows signs of age. His pitching shows signs of age.
45 is not old. At 45 you are still capable of athletic activity. Clemens has been pitching since he was a kid… once you turn 40 you lose all ability and forget what you trained your body to do?

The dumb is back in here. Seems when the Yanks lose, the dumb rises.

Kei Igawa has improved greatly in AAA and been throwing well and getting batters out and limiting runs.
Get a clue!! He is better than Clippard right now and for the money paid, he better be pitching and helping out.

This blog gets worse each day.

  54. Andrew33

I haven’t been able to look at the blog lately but one thing that concerns me is the team doesnt seem to win unless Arod is in “rake” mode. I know he didnt get any hits last night, clearly he was on fire when they were winning 9 out of 10.
I remember SJ44 writing gloom and doom thoughts about a month ago with the “they just aren’t that good” (believe me i enjoy your posts you have some great data). The point is, I’m still not so sure this team is that much better then 85-75. Hopefully they turn it around today and roll into SF. But having those doubts doesnt mean I am a total fool.
6 back in the WC now so they cant go on sabattical for the next week.

  55. jonathan

Former Yankees catcher and Florida Marlins manager Joe Girardi has turned down an opportunity to be the manager of the Baltimore Orioles, according to an official with another American League East team.

  56. saucy

either girardi’s holding his breath on taking over for joe after he’s gone, doesn’t want to manage an AL east team other than the yanks, or he sees the way baltimore treats their managers. this is the 2nd mid-season firing in 3 seasons. that can’t look good those being interviewed.

  57. Stole home

    Marius,

    The dumb never left.

Look at the posts from a few weeks ago, when fans on this blog were so enthralled by Clippard’s 1-0 start that they wanted him to become a permanent part of the rotation.

Or all the calls for Torre’s head on a platter, or to trade Abreu, or dump A-Rod, or bring up some minor league scrub or other.

People get nervous about baseball because it’s easy to get nervous about baseball. It’s a simple game with a simple outcome: win or lose.

  58. DesignatedBlogger

I’m glad Girardi turned down the O’s. That franchise has been a mess for a while. Joe will get many, better opportunites. I wouldn’t mind him taking over for Torre, but Mattingly seems to have the lock on that position.

  59. Bill

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/s.....;GT1=10136

Yankees make up about half the team.

  60. saucy

i can’t remember, did Joe interview with the Cubs this offseason?

  61. Matt (another one)

Anyone want to read about Glass Carl? ESPN’s excellent “E-Ticket” series did a piece about him today.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn.....d=tab1pos1

  62. Bob

“The Sox have generally been playing more difficult opponents than the Yankees have, right?”

Wrong…the Yankees have had the toughest schedule in the league to date. The Yankees also have one of the top run differentials in the league, despite their so-so record. Luck will even out over the course of a season, there is a long way to go. The Yankees are and will be just fine.

  63. Doreen

    SJ44 and Jennifer –

I have learned to stay away from the blog during a loss, too. All rational thought takes a vacation.

But it is a slightly schizophrenic blog on the whole. When the Yankees win, there’s a zillion posts plotting out the next 20 games and how the Yankees “should” take this many out of that many; while of course the Red Sox will necessariy lose this many out of that many. I end up doing a lot of scrolling and not much reading. But there are certain people who post whose entries I look for, and those are usually enlightening, always fun to read, even if I don’t always agree.

I was relieved to read that Girardi turned down the job, I guess because it just seemed too much like the Marlins job. But the article at ESPN seemed to indicate that it looked initially like he was going to take the job. I wonder what changed. Of course I would love at some point for him to be Yankees’ manager, I don’t think it should be for at least a couple of seasons. Does anyone else thing it might be difficult for him to manage at team that still has some of his old teammates, albeit just a handful of veterans? Or is that not really a concern? But, if the White Sox let Guillen go, Chicago is Girardi’s hometown and that might appeal to him. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

Good luck to Roger today. I probaby won’t get to see much of the game. They could certainly use the win.

  64. Doreen

    Saucy,

Girardi did interview for the Cubs job. An article in the Chicago Sun Times at that time said that Piniella, Girardi and Bochy were the prime candidates for the job, with Piniella being the first choice if he wasn’t hired to replace Joe Torre, who, at the time was on the firing line. So, I guess if Torre were gone, and Piniella with the Yanks, Girardi probably would have been in the Windy City.

  65. saucy

thanks doreen. i thought he did, but i wasn’t sure if they offered the position and joe turned it down or not. i was going to say if he turned down the cubs, that he’s most definately holding out for a managing job in the bronx.

  66. Jamie

Is it just me, or did everyone discredit Jose Cansceco when his book came out and basically most of the stuff about players in it has been true? (Palmerio, McGwire, Giambi)

I wish we could all go back to when that book came out and look at what people were saying then about Jose. I am not defending what he did because I think he’s the most at fault by introducing baseball with steroids, thus causing the domino effect that is plaguing the game at the moment.

Jose to McGwire, Sosa sees this, joins in. Giambi joins in because of McGwire influence. Bonds gets pissed because he has the best talent out of all of them and his ego leads to going from one of the greatest players of our generation to THE greatest.

  67. ny yankees tickets

It sure is good to see Roger Clemens back with the yankees and at the right time as the yankees are starting to gain some ground on the red sox.
