Game 70: Yankees at Rockies

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jun 21, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Here are the lineups:

YANKEES
Damon CF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Posada C
Matsui LF
Cano 2B
Cairo 1B
Clemens RHP (1-1, 3.65)

ROCKIES
Tavares CF
Matsui 2B
Holliday LF
Helton 1B
Atkins 3B
Hawpe RF
Tulowitzki SS
Torrealba C
Lopez RHP (3-0, 2.90)

Pregame chatter: Cairo is a career .357 hitter against Lopez. … Derek Jeter has 249 hits in interleague play, the most in the majors. … Yankee relievers have not allowed a home run in 32.1 innings dating back to June 4. … It’s supposed to get to 97 in Denver today. … Brady Clark was waived by the Dodgers. Wouldn’t you take him over Kevin Thompson? … The Yankees are 12 of 65 (.185) in the series with two runs.

UPDATE 3:25 p.m.: Here are the pitching matchups for the Giants series:

Friday: LHP Kei Igawa (2-1, 7.63) vs. RHP Matt Cain (2-7, 3.15)
Saturday: RHP Chien-Ming Wang (7-4, 3.33) vs. RHP Matt Morris (7-4, 3.21)
Sunday: RHP Mike Mussina (3-4, 5.10) vs. LHP Noah Lowry (6-6, 3.74)

UPDATE, 4:09 p.m.: Word from MLB is that Giambi and his camp have agreed to a meeting and there will be a statement coming out soon from Bud Selig.

UPDATE, 4:41 p.m.: The Yankees have five hits and Roger Clemens has one of them. Not what they were looking for from the offense. … Meanwhile Kaz Matsui is 16 of 53 (.302) with 12 RBI in 14 career games against the Yankees.

    Leading off today!

  2. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 2:31 pm

Hard for me to understand Damon playing today.

His past numbers against Lopez came when he was healthy. He’s not healthy right now.

If he is hurt enough to discuss disabling him, why play him today? Especially since Melky is one of the only guys who has hit the ball in the first two games of the roadtrip.

    A strange, strange decision, IMO.

  3. Joseph P. June 21st, 2007 at 2:32 pm

Milton Bradley was DFAd by the A’s. I’d take him over Clark…or KT…or Melky.

  4. Dan from Mass June 21st, 2007 at 2:34 pm

Doesn’t it also affect how they could DL him (Damon)? As I understand it, they could have DL’d him retroactive to his last game played as a way of getting him some additional rest without using up his roster spot. Now they’d have to lose him for the full 15 days. Or am I talking out my rear?

  5. Gayle June 21st, 2007 at 2:35 pm

Sj totally agree was just about to post this. If you are close to being on the DL how is it that you can not only play ie DH’ing but play centerfield in this stadium with so much ground. it really doesnt make much sense. I would not be surprised if he gets pulled early

  6. saucy June 21st, 2007 at 2:38 pm

Melky has decent numbers against lopez as well

    1 HR in 11 AB

    .364/.417/.636

  7. saucy June 21st, 2007 at 2:39 pm

and while i’m looking at numbers:

    Damon vs Lopez

    .313/.362/.609

  8. Scotty June 21st, 2007 at 2:42 pm

Let’s go Yankees, let’s go Yankees.

  9. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 2:43 pm

    I agree on Bradley.

This is when Joe Torre’s ability to handle a clubhouse plays into things.

Bradley is a nutjob but, he’s a TALENTED nut job. He can DH, and play any OF position.

He’s a SH and he may be the kind of guy who gets pumped up for a nice 3 month run in the Bronx.

If you have a choice, I get Bradley ASAP and put him in the lineup. He adds balance, speed, and a certain nastiness that’s missing from this team right now.

As far as his mental state? That’s why they pay Joe Torre 7 million bucks. To manage volatile personalities.

Its certainly not to know when pitchers are gassed, as we saw last night.

  10. Gayle June 21st, 2007 at 2:44 pm

For some reason I see the OTHER New York team really making a play for Bradley.

  11. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 2:47 pm

    Gayle,

you mean the Titanics, uh, I mean Titans ?

  12. Ryan June 21st, 2007 at 2:51 pm

melky will get time as a defensive replacement, when we are up 5 runs. :D

  13. Gayle June 21st, 2007 at 2:51 pm

yes THAT team that has lost most of it’s outfield this year and who we beat 2 out of 3 last weekend

  14. Marius June 21st, 2007 at 2:53 pm

Yeah, get Milton Bradley so we can watch him go on the DL again and again.

Get rid of Sheffield and bring in a bigger attitude.. yeah that makes sense.

Yankees don’t need an outfield right now. They need a true 1st baseman and relievers.

  15. Frankie Yankee June 21st, 2007 at 2:54 pm

I completely agree on Damon. He’s been battling injuries since the 1st game this season. 15 day DL just seems its a logical choice. Is it me or has Damon not been the same since he left spring training for a couple of days for “personal reasons”.

Milton Bradley is a nutcase and is on the DL every other week, he’s a perfect fit for the Mets outfield.

  16. chris in fairfield June 21st, 2007 at 2:57 pm

    1. milton bradley is a head-case and a screwball . forget him
    2. thank goodness joe torre posted this line-up . you know , the line-up that was our 9 game winning streak line-up

  17. chris in fairfield June 21st, 2007 at 2:57 pm

damon needs to go on the d.l.

  18. bob June 21st, 2007 at 2:59 pm

Maybe Damon’s feeling better? Not sure how long it takes for him an ab strain to heal. Maybe his legs are also better from DHing all those games?

  19. Matt (another one) June 21st, 2007 at 3:01 pm

97 degrees at 5,000 feet > sea level? Good Lord. Pete, make sure you keep well hydrated at Coors (not WITH Coors).

  20. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 3:02 pm

Lots of difference between the Sheffield situation and the Bradley situation.

Bringing back Sheffield would have required a contract extension of 2 more years and another 30 million bucks. Bradley is strictly a 3 month deal.

They have no CF or DH power right now. Bradley is a talented guy. He says he is healthy. If he is healthy, he is a better alternative than the injured guys they are running out there and right and it won’t cost anything to get him.

Why not take a shot at him? Its a no cost situation and if he can play well for a few months, he helps the team win.

  21. Skinny June 21st, 2007 at 3:02 pm

    Chris in fairfield,

This is not our 9 game winning streak lineup. That lineup included Melky in center, not a hobbled, slow, and old looking Damon out there

  22. Doreen June 21st, 2007 at 3:03 pm

    Frankie Yankee –

Actually – A little bit before then. But Damon said it best after the first spring training game where he led off with a homerun. He said: “It can only go downhill after this.” I think he was kidding at the time. Ouch.

  23. Doreen June 21st, 2007 at 3:05 pm

    SJ44 —

I don’t know if you can trust an athlete saying he’s healthy.

  24. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 3:06 pm

    Now it can be told…..

I sent Damon “7-Minute Abs” two weeks ago and now he’s on the mend.

    remember, it only takes 7-minutes.

ps I also included a “Flowbee”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flowbee and doncha think his looks have improved?

  25. Matt Schweber June 21st, 2007 at 3:06 pm

The Athletics just waived Brady Clark. Truth be told, I’d much prefer to see the Yankees pickup Milton Bradley– abrasive and volatile personality notwithstanding– than Brady Clark.

In either case, the Yankees decision to cut Phelphs and the aptitude Cairo has shown for playing first base only further underscores how myopic Cashman was in sacrificing a roster spot for fifth outfielder to two 1st baseman.

Cairo could have fulfilled Phelps’ role from the outset. And the Yankees could have promoted Phillips once Minky went down with injury.

  26. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 3:08 pm

    Doreen-

right on target. its like pol saying “mission accomplished”

  27. Jeff NJ June 21st, 2007 at 3:08 pm

I think Torre wants to see if Damon can spark anything offensively. he might, but I predict he will hurt them in CF and they will put him on the DL prior to Friday’s game.

  28. saucy June 21st, 2007 at 3:10 pm

i’m a little confused about the DFA process. isn’t there a period of time where we would have to offer something up in a trade before just picking him up off of waivers?

  29. RSM June 21st, 2007 at 3:12 pm

Good to see Cairo back at first. I know he’s not exactly Albert Puljols, but he’s currently our best option at first. Andy Phillips has not, and will not, hit major league pitching.

What does give me pause is an injured Damon starting center. Melky is hitting the ball hard lately and is a FAR superior defender at this point in time.

  30. Gayle June 21st, 2007 at 3:12 pm

Saucy I believe it is 10 days

Also why do we hit and run with Abreau on the first pitch everyoneknows he always takes the first pitch

  31. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 3:14 pm

    crap.

Abreu missed the hit and run sign.

back in the 70s, Bill put on the squeeze play and Cliff Johnson missed the sign. it was actually funny to watch the looks on everyone’s face: Cliff, the runner, and especially Billy.

  32. Matt Schweber June 21st, 2007 at 3:15 pm

  33. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 3:17 pm

How can Damon “spark” the offense when he is hurt? Melky has hit the ball better than anybody in this series. He has scored the only two runs in this series for the Yankees.

He is also a much better defensive OF and Coors Field is a huge OF.

Torre is often a slave to numbers. Yes, Damon’s numbers against Lopez are good. But, that is when he was healthy and a helluva lot better player than he is right now.

Today’s Johnny Damon is a shell of the guy who put up those numbers against Lopez.

Its a poor lineup decision and it may end up costing them in the OF today. Just a bad move all around.

  34. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 3:19 pm

    *STRIKE THREE !!!*

  35. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 3:23 pm

    *STRIKE THREE !!!!*

  36. Jeff NJ June 21st, 2007 at 3:24 pm

I think Torre needs to just see Damon in a game with his own eyes. I think he’ll be out by the 6th and DL’d by 9pm tomorrow night.

  37. Marius June 21st, 2007 at 3:27 pm

sj44… shhh. Enough out of you.

  38. Nigel June 21st, 2007 at 3:28 pm

Milton Bradley wouldn’t be a bad pickup. He hits lefties fairly well and if you platooned him with melky, you could put him out in the bullpen with farnsworth and dress them in camoflauge and have them talk about hunting wabbit.

  39. mel June 21st, 2007 at 3:30 pm

Persnickety. That’s the perfect word. Picky. Even better. Good for them, calling out Mussina.

  40. Frankie Yankee June 21st, 2007 at 3:30 pm

    MATSUI!!!!!

  41. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 3:31 pm

    “persnickety”

looks like Michael Kay plays scrabble on road trips.

    GO ZILLA !!!

  42. Frankie Yankee June 21st, 2007 at 3:31 pm

Sterling’s call was deplorable. He just has to get in his catchphrase.

  43. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 3:32 pm

    Marius,

Who are you, the blog police? No, I’ll think I’ll post if I want.

So, consider me ignoring your advice.

  44. Gayle June 21st, 2007 at 3:34 pm

Kay has a long running feud with Moose, he flat out doesnt like him not sure why but this has been going on for years.I think he once said something that if it were hima nd Moose in a fire and he needed Moose to save him he would rather die or something like that.

This is the problem (or at least one of them) I have with Kay as the announcer in that he says things on his radio show and goes after people and then does a 180 or says nothing on the broadcast.

  45. mel June 21st, 2007 at 3:38 pm

Kay probably would die. Moose would take ten minutes to analyze the situation and decide whether Kay would be worth saving. Deciding that he’d be doing a lot of people a favor, Mr. Kay would perish.

  46. Work? June 21st, 2007 at 3:38 pm

    Don’t you all have jobs?

  47. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 3:40 pm

    *STRIKE KKK*

  48. Chris NJ June 21st, 2007 at 3:42 pm

The Yankees pitching staff just LOVES giving up leads, don’t they?

  49. Frankie Yankee June 21st, 2007 at 3:42 pm

I guess they didn’t put these baseballs in the humidor today

  50. KingRoger June 21st, 2007 at 3:42 pm

Roger needs to make some more roids during the innings break.

  51. Scotty June 21st, 2007 at 3:43 pm

What the F Roger, pick it up

  52. seek nay June 21st, 2007 at 3:43 pm

Four hits and 3 HRs in this game… did someone forget to humidy the balls?

  53. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 3:44 pm

    Mr. Splitty suffers from acrophobia

  54. mel June 21st, 2007 at 3:45 pm

Did you guys hear the fan that yelled, “I remember when you used to throw 100 mph”? Too funny.

  55. Gayle June 21st, 2007 at 3:45 pm

I think I read that the heat negates some of the effects of the humidor and it is 90 plus today. and can Kay PLEASE notsound so excited when the other team hits homers I want to throw something at the TV it is so annoying.

  56. Bill June 21st, 2007 at 3:46 pm

What’s really funny is that Tulowitzki and Atkins are both on my opponents fantasy team.

Just adds to this nightmare even worse.

  57. ray June 21st, 2007 at 3:47 pm

Hey Porkchop….exactly when does Clemens start to pound his fist? LOL

  58. Asst Manager June 21st, 2007 at 3:48 pm

If we lose to Rodrigo Lopez I may cry.

  59. k June 21st, 2007 at 3:49 pm

    we need pollyanna porkchop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  60. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 3:50 pm

Good thing Torre put Damon in to ignite the offense today.

Of all the bonehead moves he has made this year, putting in a guy who should be on the DL today is ranking right up there.

The guy is hurt and in a funk at the plate and Torre plays him based on past numbers when he is healthy. Just crazy.

And people wonder why folks are so hard on Torre. Sometimes, he makes moves that leave you scratching your head.

  61. mark June 21st, 2007 at 3:56 pm

    SJ44,
Whats your take on Igawa starting tommorow? I’d rather see Horne, Marquez, Kennedy or even Joba rather than the ghost of Kei Igawa.

  62. ray June 21st, 2007 at 3:58 pm

As a Red Sox fan I am delighted that Igawa is starting tomorrow!

  63. Frankie Yankee June 21st, 2007 at 3:58 pm

A little follow-up on Milton Bradley:

The A’s will have to trade Bradley and his $4MM contract within ten days or just release him and eat the cost. Around $2.2MM remains. He’ll become a free agent after the season.

Thats not a bad price for someone with great potential, but its a risk reward situation and I just don’t see the yanks taking the risk.

  64. Mike June 21st, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Walking Kaz Matsui in front of Holliday. Beautiful.

  65. Jennifer June 21st, 2007 at 4:00 pm

Will Clemens make it out of the 3rd? What is his pc?

  66. mark June 21st, 2007 at 4:01 pm

    58 pitches, and rising

  67. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 4:02 pm

    *STRIKE KKKKK*

  68. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 4:03 pm

I think they have to see what Igawa can do. They have 46 million dollars invested in him.

None of the AA pitchers are ready for the ML yet. Its too soon for them. Not enough experience and many of them still don’t go deep into games.

Igawa is the next logical choice. Just have to hope he can get the job done.

  69. Frankie Yankee June 21st, 2007 at 4:03 pm

    58 pitches already

  70. Adam June 21st, 2007 at 4:03 pm

Anyone see this article on Pavano?

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn.....age=pavano

  71. mel June 21st, 2007 at 4:04 pm

    3 IP 59 pitches (35 K/24 B)

  72. Mike R. June 21st, 2007 at 4:08 pm

    Gayle

Kay doesn’t like Mussinadonna (Mussina + primdonna) for the same reason many other Yankee fans including myself don’t like him:

Mussinadonna is a self-centered asshole who is hurting the team with his ridiculous personal catcher Nieves who can’t even bat his weight let alone probably 2/3rds his weight.
Mussina failss to realize or doesn’t care that having Nieves in the lineup every fifth game is like having the pitcher bat. If the Yanks could, they should send Nieves down to AAA and call up Raul Chavez who might not be much better but who knows? If the guy goes 1 for 5 in his first start, he’s already better than Nieves (.200 BA). Even if he starts out 4 for 20, still better than Nieves, that’s how much Nieves sucks with the bat outside his pair of RBI hits in one game whenever (wow).

Of course Posada needs a rest here and there, but a rest once every 5 games is more rest than he should have. So if Posada goes 4 for 4 with 2 HR and 6 RBI on the eve of Mussina’s start, he sits for Mussina’s start? Ef that.

If Mussina has a lousy 2007, the Yanks should tell him if he doesn’t agree to a trade, they will put him on waivers after this year to clear $11.5M since they can’t trade him. Some team would be dumb enough to claim him. That way, Mussina is scared about who might pick him up and asks for a trade before he is put on waivers (no A.L. teams, he’s going to the N.L.) I mean what if the Cubs claim him? He’s screwed for a World Series in ’08 i.e. he’s not making it there in ’08. Better to determine your own course. Time to play hardball with this guy.

  73. Jamie June 21st, 2007 at 4:10 pm

Adam, I just read it. Pretty good. Even Lombardi from Waswatching.com gets a shout out.

  74. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 4:10 pm

    Pavono? Who’s that???

  75. Jamie June 21st, 2007 at 4:16 pm

Has anyone on here tried Protrade? I’m thinking of joining it but it seems really confusing. Any comments on it?

  76. Asst Manager June 21st, 2007 at 4:22 pm

If Bradley signs with the Yankees he can pretty much play everyday.

  77. jason June 21st, 2007 at 4:27 pm

Has anybody else noticed that Clemens has rarely thrown his split today?

  78. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 4:29 pm

Mr. Spittly doesn’t break at this altitude

  79. Asst Manager June 21st, 2007 at 4:29 pm

Whoever out there likes the pitcher hitting must like being slapped in the head with bricks too. It is painful to watch. Its about time the NL had the DH.

  80. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 4:30 pm

    *STRIKE KKKKKK*

  81. Rufus June 21st, 2007 at 4:31 pm

Igawa will keep getting chances until Mr Hughes is ready to go. Hopefully, he pitches well so its a good problem for Torre to have in a few weeks.

  82. YanksFanLV June 21st, 2007 at 4:33 pm

There’s a great article on ESPN.COM about Pavano. Check it out.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn.....age=pavano

  83. Rufus June 21st, 2007 at 4:34 pm

Thanks for the 25th link to that lame Pavano article.

  84. YanksFanLV June 21st, 2007 at 4:35 pm

Didn’t realize someone had already posted the article link, my bad.

  85. Frankie Yankee June 21st, 2007 at 4:35 pm

Igawa is the right choice. The rest of the pitchers are very young. Besides all of the money that Cashman dropped on Igawa means he is going to get more chances to succeed.

By the way Joba Chamberlain was selected to play in the Futures game. He is their only Yankee representative.

  86. Rufus June 21st, 2007 at 4:39 pm

Damon looks like he needs 2 weeks off to heal up here. Bradley would be a perfect fit.

  87. ansky June 21st, 2007 at 4:39 pm

    ahh, Damon’s sweet bat.

  88. Dan from Mass June 21st, 2007 at 4:39 pm

Man, I love baseball, but I can’t stand when Sterling says “you can’t predict baseball”. Like you can predict other sports? Guy drives me nuts.

  89. Curly June 21st, 2007 at 4:40 pm

I think it is a pretty safe bet that anyone that posts here also checks out ESPN.com.

  90. Manager June 21st, 2007 at 4:43 pm

Yankees have glaring holes in their lineup at 1st and CF

  91. Chicago Dave June 21st, 2007 at 4:43 pm

Clemens is just about to break the 80-pitch mark after only four complete innings. This has certainly been the trend with him over his starts so far. I know he’s basically still in spring training mode, but he’s going to have to start getting more economical as the season progresses. In the meantime, it’s again going to be up to Wang to go long against San Fran to give the bullpen a breather (I predict Torre uses at least five relievers before this game is over!). I don’t like the fact that we keep leaning on Wang to go the distance.

  92. Curly June 21st, 2007 at 4:46 pm

Who expected Clemens to be more than 6 inning pitcher?

  93. Asst Manager June 21st, 2007 at 4:48 pm

This team is desperate for 2 more bats.

  94. ansky June 21st, 2007 at 4:49 pm

i cab predict baseball. Def saw all that coming

  95. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 4:49 pm

    Curly-

    not necessarily. I don’t like espn.com

That article went down like a Royale with Cheese (tasty when ya hungry, but ya GI tract always demands payback). Please, who here thinks pavs has ever been an alpha male. I don’t think the writer gets around, he gets hung up on pavs’ down-low.

  96. wheels June 21st, 2007 at 4:49 pm

wow, he can’t even go 5 innings. All that money, plus he won’t be in San Fran.

    Sad Really.

  97. Chicago Dave June 21st, 2007 at 4:50 pm

Well, what it comes down to, I guess, is the Yanks desperately needed a guy that could go more than 6 innings (on a fairly regular basis). As it is, you’ve got to count on using the bullpen extensively every time Clemens takes the mound (i.e. every fifth day). I like the fire and charisma Clemens brings to the table, but, from a pure baseball perspective, the Yankees simply need more than Clemens can offer at this point in his career.

  98. jennifer June 21st, 2007 at 4:50 pm

For being the most storied franchise in history, we really have some bad broadcasters. Sterling gets so excited for the other team, but than is mister negative when something goes wrong. And Kay don’t even get me started on him. The only ones I enjoy listening to are. O’Niell, Girardi, and Murcer.

  99. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 4:51 pm

Last four games they have lost, including this one, its been the stolen base that’s killed them.

You can’t keep giving up 2-4 stolen bases a game and win close, low scoring games.

Hitting comes and goes. EVERY team has slumps.

But, you have to be able to throw at least some of the runner outs.

The Mets and Rockies have run at will against this team and have manufactured the runs. Which wins close, low scoring games.

  100. jennifer June 21st, 2007 at 4:51 pm

And we have Igawa going tomorrow. ANy chance that we see the pitcher who came in against the red soxs?

  101. GuidryBall June 21st, 2007 at 4:52 pm

stop whining for god’s sake. go get DeSalvo if you want, otherwise be realistic.

  102. Bill June 21st, 2007 at 4:52 pm

    From mlbtraderumors.com:

“The Yankees have added Scott Hatteberg to their list of first base targets. As if they needed more OBP.”

  103. Asst Manager June 21st, 2007 at 4:53 pm

How about not letting those top of the order guys on?

    Hows that?

  104. Chicago Dave June 21st, 2007 at 4:53 pm

Posada has NEVER been good at throwing at baserunners. Yes, Pena has helped him be better, but he’s still not a great defensive catcher, period. Workmanlike, maybe…but definitely not good. It’s Jorge’s offense that has always made up for his defensive shortcomings…

  105. Bill June 21st, 2007 at 4:54 pm

    Great job Mike Myers!

  106. Asst Manager June 21st, 2007 at 4:55 pm

What is the point of having a lefty specialist who cannot get lefty’s out?

I don’t get it. is he a long man? Mop up guy? Because Myers cannot get out tough lefty’s.

  107. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 4:55 pm

Another example of why Damon should not be in CF. A routine single and the runner goes from first to third.

A bonehead by Torre and it costs him yet again.

Meanwhile, the lefty specialist continues to have trouble getting lefties out.

I hope Kei Igawa has been “fixed” because, if he’s not, its 4 losses in a row going into Wang’s start.

  108. mike June 21st, 2007 at 4:55 pm

johnny damon brings nothing to the table right now!!!! and myers vant get lefties out ever

  109. Manager June 21st, 2007 at 4:55 pm

Myers cant do his job once again and Damon’s pathetic game continues

  110. wheels June 21st, 2007 at 4:55 pm

    Who is more useless?

    Mike Myers or Kyle Farnsworth?

  111. S^ June 21st, 2007 at 4:56 pm

Damon’s s*cks.. Go back to Boston. Idiot. He’s phony…… He’s waste on 40th man roster.

  112. Chicago Dave June 21st, 2007 at 4:56 pm

And we’re already on reliever #2!!! Maybe my original guess was too low…

  113. Curly June 21st, 2007 at 4:57 pm

Cashman really need to retool that bullpen. Hes got dead weight in Myers and barely weight in Farnsworth right now.

Thing is. They both have value since every team needs pen help.

  114. Bill June 21st, 2007 at 4:58 pm

    Put Damon on the DL.

    Get Rowand immediately.

  115. Rodger Dodger June 21st, 2007 at 4:58 pm

    $1.3 million/start – 4.86 ERA

  116. wheels June 21st, 2007 at 4:59 pm

Torre really has looked awful this season.

Every move from pinch running for giambi earlier in the season to starting Damon, to bringing in Myers has just blown up in his face..

  117. Chicago Dave June 21st, 2007 at 4:59 pm

    Curly –

Who would we replace Farnsworth and Meyers with at this point? I agree that in a perfect world we would get rid of them both…but I’m not that sure we could replace them with anything better right now.

  118. RJPinstripes June 21st, 2007 at 4:59 pm

How many times has Myers come in and given up a hit to a lefty? Again today!

  119. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 5:02 pm

The Damon move today cost him one and perhaps two runs.

I don’t understand it. The guy is hurt and he puts him in the lineup. Makes no sense.

As bad as the pitching has been, 3-2 is a helluva different than 4-2.

If you see the team isn’t hitting, you can’t sacrifice defense for a guy who isn’t hitting himself (Damon).

Just a bad decision and its cost them bigtime today.

  120. ansky June 21st, 2007 at 5:02 pm

leave it to Jete to get something started. Lets get a rally started and shake Lopez down.

  121. Chicago Dave June 21st, 2007 at 5:02 pm

What do you think it would take to get Matt Holliday?

  122. Mike June 21st, 2007 at 5:03 pm

Is it in Myers’ contract to give up a run in every appearance? Seriously, he is FAILING in his duty.

  123. Mike June 21st, 2007 at 5:04 pm

I know I’m a little late here but I just turned the game on for the first time since the second inning…Can anyone tell me what happened to Clemens? 3 runs isn’t that many and we’re not that far into the game. Don’t tell me he got injured or something like that.

  124. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 5:04 pm

Ya see Jetes sucking air at 2nd. The low oxygen thing is no joke.

  125. S^ June 21st, 2007 at 5:05 pm

Damon and Myers are both Rats. They’re probably still on Redsox Payroll. I hope Cashman Just released this guys..

  126. Scotty June 21st, 2007 at 5:05 pm

What else is new the captain gets another hit to start a rally

  127. Frank Discussion June 21st, 2007 at 5:05 pm

Agree with the prevailing thought regarding Damon, he’s just taking up space on the roster right now. He should have been placed on the DL much earlier. No speed, weak arm and useless at the plate. What’s the point, Joe ?

Someone please tell Cano that he doesn’t have to swing at every first pitch.

  128. Curly June 21st, 2007 at 5:06 pm

If this team can’t score 5 runs at Coors Fields, they don’t deserve to make the playoffs.

  129. Manager June 21st, 2007 at 5:06 pm

looks like Bobby Abooboo is back

  130. Nick June 21st, 2007 at 5:06 pm

    SJ44-

You’re beating a dead horse with the Melky/Damon thing. We get it…he should’ve played Melky in center today and probably DL Damon, I think we can all agree on that. But, no reason to rehash your point countless times.

The way we’ve been hitting it doesn’t look good right now, but I’ve never seen so many people give up on a 2 run ball game in the 6th inning

  131. Jamie June 21st, 2007 at 5:07 pm

Uhm to get Matt Holliday? Probably trading A-Rod and paying for most of his contract. Oh and Chicago Dave, I’d bring up Britton and Edwar Ramirez in a heartbeat to replace Myers and Farnsworth.

  132. ansky June 21st, 2007 at 5:07 pm

oh, scratch my earlier comment. Thought we might actually start a rally here.

  133. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 5:07 pm

    Mike-

Rocket only had his fastball today. Breaking balls don’t break in thin air. Joe felt batters were starting to zero on the lack of variety. with no run production, joe is trying to change it up in hopes of keeping it close.

  134. Jamie June 21st, 2007 at 5:08 pm

I agree Nick. If I wanted to hear the same thing over and over again I’d listen to Mad Dog on WFAN right now.

  135. Jer June 21st, 2007 at 5:08 pm

Wow Sterling is really lambasting the Yanks…

  136. Curly June 21st, 2007 at 5:08 pm

Obviously, they need to go out and get a reliever. A Weathers. A Gagne. Someone. I’m pretty certain that Cashman will get another arm for the pen soon. Then they can trade Farnsworth and Myers.

  137. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 5:08 pm

Bonehead move after bonehead move. Now they can’t advance baserunners and Jeter commits the ultimate bonehead move to blow up an inning.

Seven times the Yankees have had runners at second base with less than two outs in this series. They have scored one run in those situations.

Back the Yankee Baseball we watched for seven weeks, prior to the last two weeks. Awful pitching, awful hitting, awful baseruning, awful managing.

Sure hope they play better in SF or this could be an o-fer on this roadtrip.

  138. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 5:09 pm

    Crap.

first cano, now jetes blow a scoring position.

  139. Col June 21st, 2007 at 5:10 pm

Anyone know the statistics for Arod hitting a homer and yankees win vs Arod doesnt hit a homer and yankees lose…

It just has that feeling that if Arod is hot, the rest of the team gets offense, but without Arod, the team is like a fish out of water at the plate.

  140. Curly June 21st, 2007 at 5:11 pm

    Yeah, they can get Holliday.

In two yrs when hes a free agent.

  141. jennifer June 21st, 2007 at 5:12 pm

Funny how that base running mistake by Jeter was everyones fault but Jeters. It was Bobby’s fault cause he didn’t move the runner over and it was Arods fault because he has such great bat control that he should have been able to hit the ball to the right side.

(this all according to suzy and john)

  142. Curly June 21st, 2007 at 5:14 pm

I wonder if this is the real team and the last 2 weeks were the result of playing 4 terrible teams.

  143. Jake June 21st, 2007 at 5:15 pm

Down 2 in Colorado in the 6th and you people sound like its over. Relax.

  144. TexasConMan June 21st, 2007 at 5:17 pm

  145. S^ June 21st, 2007 at 5:18 pm

Relax? Stfu Jake…… Your fraud Yankees Fan…. So, you think is easy , Why don’t you play baseball then…..

  146. Scis June 21st, 2007 at 5:20 pm

Playoff teams execute the fundamentals. They move runners over from second with no outs and they certainly dont give up back to back base hits on 0-2 counts

  147. Scotty June 21st, 2007 at 5:20 pm

Its all over. Swept by the Rockies. Can’t hit for crab. Lookev absolutly awful this serious. Can’t wait for “08″.

  148. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 5:20 pm

    Jennifer,

Exactly. It was Jeter’s fault. I don’t why its so hard for those two shills to admit it.

It was a dumb play and he knew it.

They had leads in all three games in this series and haven’t gotten the job done on the mound.

Sometimes, your pitching has to carry the team for a few days when you aren’t hitting. This team’s pitching, aside from Wang, can’t do that.

They don’t win low scoring games and haven’t for several years now. Ever since they decided its all about offense in constructing the team.

You add up the poor baserunning, lack of situational hitting and the complete inability to stop teams from stealing 3-4 bases a game, and you have trouble winning.

That’s what we are seeing this series.

  149. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 5:25 pm

Walk another pitcher. Beautiful. Can anybody in this bullpen throw the ball over the damn plate.

How do you walk the pitcher every game in this series? Just disgusting.

Its why this bullpen stinks. With the exception of Mo, nobody can throw the ball over the plate with any level of consistency.

  150. Have noticed? June 21st, 2007 at 5:27 pm

I’ve noticed that SJ44 and Jennifer spend a lot of time writing back and forth to each other, mostly to agree with something the other has said.

    What’s up with that?

  151. Jake jr June 21st, 2007 at 5:30 pm

relax guys! even if we get swept by the rockies, our savior kei igawa is going to pitch tomorrow! cheer up!

  152. Rocco June 21st, 2007 at 5:33 pm

“Playoff teams execute the fundamentals. They move runners over from second with no outs and they certainly dont give up back to back base hits on 0-2 counts”

hmmm Cano double, cairo sac bunt, melky sac fly… yup thats fundamental.

  153. Sam_Perlozzo June 21st, 2007 at 5:33 pm

    yankees suck

  154. Chicago Dave June 21st, 2007 at 5:34 pm

For all the talk about pitching, Yanks should be able to match (at least) a 4-spot. This is a streaky, fast-or-famine offense, which has been a hallmark of Yankee teams since ’01. When you can’t maufacture runs – i.e. you’re simply going base-to-base and waiting for an extra-base hit to get you around to home…well, that isn’t going to win you any championships, not unless you have the best pitching staff in the majors (which the Yanks clearly don’t have right now).

  155. Bryan June 21st, 2007 at 5:34 pm

Only thing worse then listening to Sterling is having to listen to George Frazier who is best known for tying the World Series record for losses with three for the Yankees in 1981 as he is the Rockies announcer and being in Florida I am watching on MLB In-Demand.

All of a sudden he became a know it all ! For a guy with 676 IP, 35W-43L, and a 4.20ERA he surely talks a lot of crap !

  156. Gayle June 21st, 2007 at 5:35 pm

regardless of the score we have to see Mo in this game he needs the work. We all know what he looks like when he doesnt pitch on days on end (see Sat Mets game)

  157. Scis June 21st, 2007 at 5:36 pm

“hmmm Cano double, cairo sac bunt, melky sac fly… yup thats fundamental.”

if they had done that the inning before the game would be tied

  158. Chicago Dave June 21st, 2007 at 5:36 pm

P.S. – Yes, I know the Yanks just scored a run with small ball, but I would still say that’s very atypical of this offense.

  159. Chicago Dave June 21st, 2007 at 5:37 pm

“I’ve noticed that SJ44 and Jennifer spend a lot of time writing back and forth to each other, mostly to agree with something the other has said.

    What’s up with that?”

Actually, I think that’s a good question. I’ve been wondering the same thing!

  160. Sam_Perlozzo June 21st, 2007 at 5:37 pm

    damon plays like a girl

  161. CB June 21st, 2007 at 5:38 pm

A painful game just got worse thanks to the call on radio.

On Melky’s fly ball in the seventh – perhaps one of the worst Sterling calls of all time.

“Deep, back goes Holliday… He’s at the wall, She’s gone! The Melk-man delivers!!!!!…. No what are they saying? Did he make that catch? He made the catch. Holliday. He made the catch… Where did he catch it? I can’t wait to see”

  162. Chicago Dave June 21st, 2007 at 5:39 pm

Damon is clearly hurt…Torre should be sitting him. It’s not all Damon’s fault!

  163. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 5:39 pm

    Sam, Grrls Rock

  164. Rocco June 21st, 2007 at 5:42 pm

  170. Colorado Yank June 21st, 2007 at 5:48 pm

Spent three days at these games. not a good site to see. no hitting, some pitching but terrible terrible fundamentals. This team is terrible at fundamentals.

I watch the Rockies on a regular basis and there is NO FRIGGIN’ WAY they should compete with the Yankees. Unacceptable.

Watch Abreu’s at bats, he is pulling away again. Yanks take too many good pitches and swing at too many bad pitches.

  171. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 5:48 pm

I guess you don’t like women, sam.

    what a shame. you’re missing out – they’re a Blast

  172. Gayle June 21st, 2007 at 5:49 pm

Please do we need to see yet another link to the story which tells us absolutely nothing new and most of the quotes come from other news sources. Please people should read the comments before posting the same thing multiple times.

SJ and Jennifer are some of the more intelligent comments on this blog and if they talk back and forth to each other fine with me I have to say I learn something pretty much every time with them.

I agree with someone earlier’spost that perhaps this game will be the determining game on if Damon goes on the DL.

I cannot complain that we lose 3 games to Colorado they have been playing really good baseball and they did almost the same to the Red Sox HOWEVER what I can complain about is the lack of bounce and fundementals displayed in this series. I wonder how much the high altitude has effected this older team as well as if the players bought into the whole the balls will fly out of the park and they got away from what they were doing before

  173. ansky June 21st, 2007 at 5:51 pm

wow, where was Jete for that at bat? Think he had already left for the coast.

  174. Sam_Perolozza June 21st, 2007 at 5:51 pm

  179. Dr. Acula June 21st, 2007 at 6:02 pm

    crap.

Posada just signaled “keep the ball down” and farnsy goes high.

    crikey

  180. Gayle June 21st, 2007 at 6:02 pm

Yep this is the team we saw a few weeks ago.Top of the 9th let go get them and get out of dodge.

  181. Colorado Yank June 21st, 2007 at 6:05 pm

    This is pathetic.

  182. Mike June 21st, 2007 at 6:12 pm

Yeah, Andy Phillips is the guy you want pinch hitting with 2 outs in the 9th.

  183. TJ June 21st, 2007 at 6:15 pm

Wow it’s hard to believe we got swept by the Rockies. They certainly came out prepared to play and win. I think we can use this lost to win against Bond’s and company. Our guys just didn’t have any luck with the Rockies and I have no doubt they were playing their best.

  184. Colorado Yank June 21st, 2007 at 6:15 pm

Steinbrenner and or Cashman need to rip some asses. This is completely unacceptable. I know this is just 3 games but they do not look good. SF is on a losing streak and playing at home, look out.

  185. Asst Manager June 21st, 2007 at 6:16 pm

    This series was a disgrace.

If Cashman cannot see that this team needs another bat than he useless.

  186. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 6:17 pm

Who else is left? You act as if Cecil Fielder is on the bench.

Their bench has stunk all year. Josh Phelps isn’t any better. He stunk when he was here.

Complaining about the Yankee bench is like complaining about your room on the Titanic. It doesn’t matter.

They didn’t get swept because of their bench. They lost this series because their starters couldn’t hold leads, they didn’t hit, they couldn’t throw anybody out on the basepaths, and they did a HORRIBLE job with situational hitting and baserunning.

The bench is meaningless when you can’t do the fundamentals needed to win games. They didn’t and they lost.

  187. ansky June 21st, 2007 at 6:17 pm

I think the clubhouse kid forgot to put everyone’s bat in the humidor this week. Total setup, he was paid off.

  188. Asst Manager June 21st, 2007 at 6:20 pm

Hold leads? 1-0 and 2-0 in the 3rd inning isn’t holding leads.

When you score 5 runs in 3 games in Colorado, something is not right.

  189. Marius June 21st, 2007 at 6:20 pm

Well, it seems the Rockies of 2007 and are nothing like the Rockies of the past. I am quite impressed. Youth is a good thing to have. Well scouted and signed youth is an amazing thing to have.
Take not Cashman. This is how you build a team. Youth, speed, defense, and a capable bullpen with a couple power hitters in the middle.

The Rockies 2 out of 3 from the Red Sox, who are the better team, so i’m not surprised we got swept. This is a good team. Even better when you have never faced them before. Yankees didn’t scout out the Rockies very well before teh start of this series. The Yankees expected to win and it bit them in the ass.

OKAY, PHILLIPS EXPERIMENT IS OVER. He is not capable of success in the bigs. He is a AAA player and nothing more.
Bring back Cairo and get on the phones Cashman. Capable 1st baseman out there.

  190. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 6:22 pm

Cashman probably does see he needs a bat. But, what do you do and who is out there?

Is it worth blowing up your farm system to get another all star?

Or, do you look at this team objectively and say, there are too many holes to fill and its not worth blowing up your farm system to add somebody to a VERY flawed team.

Its June 21. Most teams aren’t trading on June 21 unless you overpay to get somebody. I don’t want to see the Yankees do that because this team is too flawed to be “one guy away” from being good.

I’d rather see them take a shot on Milton Bradley because he won’t cost anything. I could care less about his attitude.

Maybe his attitude is something this team needs. They seem awfully accepting of losing to me and have acted that way most of the season.

Give me a hard ass and put him in the lineup and see what he can do.

Clubhouse harmony? Please, its the Yankees. They never have clubhouse harmony.

I doubt the clubhouse is happy right now.

Take a shot on Bradley and see what happens. It can’t be any worse than what we are seeing now.

  191. Colorado Yank June 21st, 2007 at 6:27 pm

Bottom line, this may be the year that the Yankees miss the playoffs. They just do not have the caliber of a team to make any run in the playoffs. Right now they are not even in the top 5 of best AL teams. That is not a good sign.

They need to stop with the ” Its only June” crap and start playing baseball. Who is available that is a BASEBALL player…not a good hitter or good fielder but a baseball player who understands situations and such?

  192. TexasConMan June 21st, 2007 at 6:28 pm

Hey we won 9 in a row, its 1978 all over again the sux are quaking in their bootsssss, we have mystique and aura!! 25 ringzz!!!!111111111

    douchbags.

    Chokers.

  193. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 6:29 pm

Sometimes, you have to win low scoring games on the road. The Red Sox do it, and have done it all year.

You aren’t always going to score at will. The Rockies are 20-7 in their last 27 games. They are a good team.

It was a playoff-like atmosphere and, like their last 13 playoff games, the Yankees failed to measure up.

As Pettitte said last night, “sometimes, you have to win pitching duels”.

The Dynasty Yankee teams didn’t have a problem making leads hold up in low scoring games. This team can’t do it.

They had 3 leads in this series and blew all of them.

They aren’t going to score 8 runs a game every night.

If you look at this team, its the only way they win and that’s the problem.

Pitch better, do a better job with situational hitting, they win 2 of 3 in this series. If you are just depending on offense, then its the like the old Red Sox team. They will go nowhere.

  194. Kevin M. June 21st, 2007 at 6:30 pm

Uhmmm…Cairo did play today and went 0-2. His OPS is comfortably below .600 on the season. Phillips had had 5 AB’s…yes, that’s enough to judge him. Gimme a break.

Cashman please put Damon on the DL already. He cant do anything at the plate and his girl of an arm cost them a run. He looks like he is golfing with that pathetic swing.

Abreu is back to his garbage status. Not taking pitches, trying to bunt and pulling everything. They are not pitching to Arod and he is getting himself out..he has to be more patient and just take the walk. They didnt pitch to him once in this series and he swings away.

You never see Jeter make ridilious base running plays like that and then ofcourse Posada gets a hit right after that so he would of scored. That play really hurt them and pretty much cost them the game since they forgot how to hit. I hope they remember to bring the bats to San Fran.

It’s the Same Rockies team who take 2 out 3 three from Redsox. The Rockies who slaughtered Redsox pitching in Fenway park. They embrassed Schilling and Beckett. It was Beckett first loss if I mistaken.
I gave Rockies credit.. Rockies are a hot team right now. The Rockies are 9-3 against in Al East.

The Yankees are struggling to score runs. Roger should be 2-1. He pitched great against Mets in his last outing but Yankees didn’t score runs for him. Fire Hitting Coach Kevin Long….

Damon better not play CF ever again this year.

If you can’t win close games, at least half the time, you’re going nowhere fast. That’s why Mariano was always so valuable. Those close games were winnable, almost always, even if they didn’t always win them.

With this team, you can pretty much tell within th first 2-3 innings what kind of a game it’s going to be. Sure, sometimes, they’ll surprise you, but, really, if they start slow, they mostly end slower. Andy collapsed yesterday under the pressure of having to pitch a shut-out to win, but for the most part the pitchers did not give up an awful lot a runs. They did not hold their small leads, and aggravatingly gave those leads RIGHT BACK, but this team was “in” every game, so far as not being many runs behind (except for late last night, when Andy imploded, or as he said, “stopped pitching.”) Did Alex Rodriguez even hit a ball in the air in 3 days? Not that I’m blaming him, I’m not — the whole team was pretty awful, if not with the bats, then on the basepaths. Humidor or no humidor, the temperature here was up and they Yankees are a team capable of putting the ball out of that place. Someone said Rocket threw only fastballs today because his breaking ball wasn’t breaking because of the altitude. And the other team? Did they throw only fastballs?

There’s no one player her to put the “blame” on. It’s teamwide. When they hit, they ALL hit; when they don’t, NO ONE does. It’s not good. And they don’t play situational baseball on a consistent basis. The seem to stop being the team they should be whenevern the opponent is a running, small-ball team (like the Angels). The lose it against young pitchers who are good, but not great, if they haven’t seen them before.

The last three games were just not fun to watch, and it’s not because they lost. It’s because of the way they played (or didn’t).

Is there anybody out there who doesn’t think the Yanks miss Jason Giambi now??? It was amazing how so many “fans” forgot what his on base percentage and power meant to this lineup.

Here’s wishing him the best in his recovery from his foot injury and his legal battle with the Commisioner of Hypocrites, Uncle Bud Selig.
Yes, Giambi made a very bad error in judgment. Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone.

No, it isn’t about Phillips 5 AB’s this season. It is his long record of having great numbers in AAA and then getting called up and doing squat. It never changes. Every year it’s the same story with him. Enough.
He comes up and does what he always does when he comes up, nothing.

Abreu is not garbage again. It’s one series. Have some long term vision people. You look dumb when base everything off one series in a unfamiliar city against a team they never play.

Spoiled little brats. ONE SERIES. NOTHING MORE. Over 3 months still left in the season. More games to go than were already played.

    sj.. stfu!

What is wrong with having a good baseball conversation with a blogger? Why does someone find that strange? Maybe I find it strange that some people only come out to critize the team when things go wrong. And aren’t here when things are going right.

  202. Jennifer June 21st, 2007 at 7:45 pm

Marius I guess you missed an entire month last year when Andy basically carried the team. Without him last year we don’t make the playoffs. Did you forget June when he had a .333 avg?

  203. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 7:48 pm

Sorry Marius, no can do. But, keep making yourself sound like a moron. You are doing a great job of it.

I am guessing you are another internet tough guy who can spew all the tough talk on the ‘net but has a tough time following it up in real life.

Its a shame to go thru life being such a coward. I feel sorry for you.

  204. Marius June 21st, 2007 at 8:09 pm

SJ, I will happily tell you in person. I actually prefer it.

You are the one going on about signing Milton Bradley. A player no team has wanted when they saw how bad his attitude was.
You know some stuff but your arrogance is annoying and takes away from your knowledge. Wanna meet in person and I will happily tell you. I am not a violent person, but will happily discuss it with you in person over coffee like two mature adults. If you wanna fight, then take it elsewhere, tough guy. I don’t use violence or need to back up my statments with violence. Not my way. Seems to be yours, tough guy.

  205. Rick June 21st, 2007 at 8:26 pm

The Yankees management will have to make some big decisions soon. Right now this is not a playoff team and probably will not be one. The only problem is that the players they have playing like Abreu and Damon have no trade value. Right now they have three players who have enough gas in the tank to build around AROD, Jeter, and Cano. The yankees are in a tough predicament. They will ahve to go all out for AROD.

  206. Marius June 21st, 2007 at 8:37 pm

Jennifer, I see you read the wikipedia on him.
Yes, he did well in June, then hit .165 in July. In no way did Phillips carry the team nor was he the reason they made the playoffs.

  207. mark June 21st, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Hey guys if we want to get an outfielder with attitude problems we should get Dukes from Tampa. He’s a real whack job.

  208. Shamgod June 21st, 2007 at 8:43 pm

    Pete,

You were there. What the hell happened to this team during these three games?

  209. Red Sox Bus June 21st, 2007 at 8:51 pm

Something is behind us but it’s way back there and it seems to be getting smaller and smaller!

  210. Jennifer June 21st, 2007 at 9:05 pm

    Wikapedia is garbage.

Don’t forget Andy went thru a very emotional time last year with his wife sick with cancer. Maybe that weighed on him. there is something there. Give the guy more than 5 ab’s before you dump him again. And with our offense we shouldn’t need his bat! What did Damon, Bobby do this series?

  211. Joe L June 21st, 2007 at 9:36 pm

    Awful, awful, awful.

Not surprised we bring up Andy “man of God” Phillips and we hit the skids again.

Yeah, I know. The players and the media love him. He’s a great guy. Salt of the eart. So f’ing what? The guy is not a major league ball player and has no business being on the Yankees. None. He can’t hit and he’s a low energy listless ballplayer with no fire, which describes most of the current Yankees right now.

Get a real player Cashman. Stop this madness. You have the worst bench in baseball which means when all the old overpaid stars get hurt, you have no options.

It’s a disgrace when you see a team go cold and hot together like this. I mean, if Arod isn’t carrying the team, they lose. That’s about where we’re at for the season.

This team should be tied for first with the Red Sox with the talent they have, but unless they can play with some passion and stop keeling over every single time they face a pitcher they have not faced before, we won’t make the playoffs.

Whoever said the Yankee scouting sucks is right. I have never seen a team make mediocre pitchers look like Cy Young just because they never faced them before. I mean, LaTroy Hawkins got big outs against us. LaTroy f’ing Hawkains? We used to smack him around like he was the right handed Arthur Rhodes.

Cashman has a job to do and bringing up Andy Phillips ain’t doing the job.

I saw the rumor about getting Hatteburg and that’s a great idea and a step in the right direction. I also think bringing in Milton Bradley or trading for Elijah Dukes and all their baggage isn’t a bad idea. We need right handed power, we need speed and athleticism…but most of all, we need players who don’t curl up in the fetal position when Arod doesn’t hit a home run. We need depth.

I was reading about how Edgardo Alfonso who is only 33 is playing in the independent league in Long Island and how he’s showing flashes of being ready to get back to the big leagues.

You can’t tell me that signing Alfonso and replacing him with Basak on this team wouldn’t be a good idea. I know the guy sucked the last couple of years, but I also know he was a gamer who played with heart for the Mets and we could use him if he’s got anything left which I bet he does. He never struck me as a steroid guy, so I think his dropoff was more about him leaving NY and his comfort zone. I mean, the guy took out a full page ad in the local papers thanking the NY fans when he left for SF.

Get me some veteran character guys who want to win, have some fire and can threaten people like Cano, Abreu, Matsui, Cabrera into performing consistently or getting benched.

I doubt anyone on that Yankee team is looking over their shoulders worrying about Thompson, Phillips, Basak and Nieves.

If the starters aren’t going to be consistent, then we need back ups who can play. Not nice guys who go to church and the beat reporters love.

Right now, I would sign Alfonso, tell Bernie to get to Tampa and see what he has left, trade for Hatteburg (or Carlos Pena) and see if you can get a guy like Dukes or Milton.

Andy Phillips brings great clubhouse chemistry with him — unfortunately that chemistry doesn’t breed winning.

Make the starters play for their jobs again. Torre benched Tino, Boggs, etc. in the past and guys performed when they were called on. We need players with pride. I don’t think we have enough of them right now.

  212. SJ44 June 21st, 2007 at 10:28 pm

    Marius,

You are the one who told me STFU. I have never said that to you.

You want to act like a punk, you will get treated like one.

On or off line, makes no difference to me.

You want to talk like that, be prepared to back it up.

  213. aNdYam June 22nd, 2007 at 12:44 am

    We need pitching.

    WE DONT NEED OFFENSE.

A bullpen arm or two. Or a starter. A half-decent one.

    NO OFFENSE.
