One of the little perks of being a sportswriter is that most of the parks will give you whatever promotional item they hand out to the fans on a given night.

I have a bookcase at home full of stuff I’ve received from assorted stadiums. Mostly bobblehead dolls and other cheap trinkets. If the Hall of Fame ever needs this stuff, I’m their guy.

But I was clueless what to do with tonight’s gift, which was a camouflage Rockies cap.

It’s actually a nice hat, but I just can’t see myself ever wearing it.

So after much consideration, I have decided to give it to Kyle Farnsworth tomorrow. Kyle likes to shoot things in the woods, he often wears camouflage clothing in the clubhouse and perhaps this will somehow lead to his being traded to the Rockies.

Now technically, giving the players gifts is a serious breach of ethics. But I won’t tell my boss if you don’t.

UPDATE, 11:30 a.m.: I just gave Kyle the hat. He was thrilled. “You can never have enough camouflage hats,” he said.

Well, of course, everybody knows that.

Pete does Farnsy have any idea you’re always killen em on this blog

  2. Chris NJ June 21st, 2007 at 3:25 am

Along with the hat, have a sticky note inside it hinting as to how bad he’s actually been, so maybe, just maybe, he’ll retire from baseball and start a career as an animal hunter with his own hunting show on OLN. Or maybe a bounty hunter would be better suited for him, but of course if all else fails there’s always the option of Krazy Kyle the stripper… ..ooooh boy.

  3. Mehdi June 21st, 2007 at 3:25 am

Give it to all the Yankee fans there so they can blend in instead of having to wear a bag over their heads tomorrow.

    “For shame.”

Hey Peter can you play this in the club house tomorrow as sort of a pep talk.

I’m an Astro fan, we have what could be the rookie of
the year ,in center fielder , Hunter Pence.
Someone from the Yanks needs to take a good look at this kid.
He would make a fine Yankee. Hits to all fields, has power, speed and a great attitude.
Once his contract is up, a lotta people are gonna be offering
him money. So George should pony up some dough for a real diamond in the rough.
I’d like to see him stay in Houston, but management is so
dysfunctional , they’ll never put a good team around him.
    Take a look see. thanx

Mariners follow Yankees, sign two from China

Infielder-outfielder Yu Bing Jia and catcher Wei Wang, members of the Beijing Tigers in the China Baseball League and of China’s national baseball team, signed minor league contracts Wednesday

Rodeo – I’ve been following Pence for awhile now and I agree that he is the real deal. As Screamin’ A Smith would say thought, HOWEVERA, THE ASTROS WILL NEVER DO SUCH A THING!

  12. MoreRun June 21st, 2007 at 8:57 am

Peter, wouldn’t your boss read this blog? The blog is on a LoHud server, isn’t it?

  13. Mike Parch June 21st, 2007 at 9:04 am

Dr. Acula (hilarious scrubs reference by the way) isn’t it funny that on the camo gators hat there is a gator wearing a bright orange hat??

This has nothing to do with the fact that I am an undergrad at OSU originally from the NY area. I promise.

The Yankees are winning since Cairo’s started playing first base and Melky playing centerfield. Why Does Yankees needs to do this move when they’re are winning with Cairo and Melky in the first place? This Yankees Team had good vibe and good karma going with these two players. The Yankees are now 0-2 since move had made. I blame Cashman and Joe for this. Josh Phelps was fine coming off the bench

    burn the hat

  16. Gifts for all June 21st, 2007 at 9:43 am

    Pete,

How about you give camouflage to every member of the Yankees starting lineup?

In light of the embarrassing way they’ve been playing, they probably want to blend into their surroundings as much possible.

  17. Matt June 21st, 2007 at 10:03 am

I approve of anything that leads to Farnsworth being traded.

  18. Jeff NJ June 21st, 2007 at 10:05 am

It is time to DL Damon and free Shelley Duncan.

    Duncan is hitting .292 with 18 HR’s and 51 RBI’s. OBP of .380, Slg .576.

He needs to come up to stay, at least give him a shot.

  19. beatcake June 21st, 2007 at 10:08 am

What was Phillips hitting in the minors? After all, he is rocking how, right? Right? So, sure, bring up another minor league player to show how good our farm system is.

  20. Jeff NJ June 21st, 2007 at 10:18 am

Phillips has had 4 AB’s. Guess you’re right, that’s a large enough sample size, what a disaster he is. Why did he even get out of bed today, he’s awful, no way he can dig himself out of that hole. Who cares what his defense is like or that with him we can have only 1 1B on the roster by having him instead of the failed Minky/ Phelps experiment.

Guess everyone in our minor league system is worse than him too, must be, he’s in the majors and they aren’t. May as well fold up the organization, give everyone a year off.

  21. Matt June 21st, 2007 at 10:21 am

Two career minor leaguers in the starting lineup. That would be fun.

  22. Master Shake June 21st, 2007 at 10:31 am

Pete, I gotta hand it to you, this is a pretty funny entry. Nice work.

  23. Jeff NJ June 21st, 2007 at 10:31 am

Anything has to be more fun than the last 2 nights.

  24. Matt June 21st, 2007 at 10:34 am

Oh, I disagree. Watching 30 year olds try and fail to solve the mysterious “Curve Ball” is no fun at all for me.

  25. beatcake June 21st, 2007 at 10:36 am

Jeff – I guess you missed last years at bats that Phillips had too. What? Are you married to Phillips and Duncan? Jeeze, the Yankees have a little set back and you now want to bring up career minor leaguers to fill in the holes.

Yah, bet that will work just fine.

  26. Bill June 21st, 2007 at 10:48 am

Helton needs to come over to the other side today. For good.

  27. chris in fairfield June 21st, 2007 at 11:00 am

phillips is a career minor leaguer at 30-31 yrs of age . will nieves is 29 going on 30 . . maybe its time to get that law degree .

  28. Jeff NJ June 21st, 2007 at 11:04 am

Duncan is 27. He may not be the long term answer, but right now we need short term solutions. That’s all I’m asking for. You never heard of players taking longer to develop than bursting on the scene? Who else would you rather have at DH short term if Damon goes on the DL? Cairo, Thompson, Basak, Tabata, Eric Duncan? See what I mean, beggars can’t be choosers.

Not sure how I became the defender of Phillips, I wanted Phelps to beat him out in the worst way and even advocated Phelps to take over backup catcher, but he was terrible in the field and mediocre at the plateo. Is Phillips an upgrade, not really, but at least we only need one man for the spot with him.

  29. dan June 21st, 2007 at 11:06 am

Jeff, you are totally right on Duncan. Not only is he having a great year in Triple-A Scranton, but he is by far one of the nicest guys in the clubhouse. He can handle the corner outfield spots and 1B, maybe the Yankees need to consider placing Damon on the DL so he can heal up, and calling up Shelley. At least until the Yankees can explore trading possibilities.

  30. gargoyle June 21st, 2007 at 11:13 am

Damon should be DL’d. This can’t continue with him being available one day – then unavailable 2 or 3 days etc etc…

  31. Wolf In Pinstripes June 21st, 2007 at 11:27 am

I watched Pence play for Houston’s A club here in Lex., KY a couple years ago. They had another kid on the team at the time that was supposed to be a huge power threat going into the season. He didn’t play up to expectations (can’t even remember his name now, naturally) and Pence came out of nowhere and hit the snot out of the ball all year. He’s climbed the ranks really fast since then. I agree that he would be a great pickup for any team if they could get him.

  32. Jeff NJ June 21st, 2007 at 11:36 am

thanks dan. Good little blog you got over there. I’m looking for one where I’m not attacked for everything I say.

  33. BAD DADDY VLAD June 21st, 2007 at 11:53 am

We had a cheering section for you last night PETER ABRAHAM…..Shouted your name 6 or 7 times, and all you did was just look over and not even acknowledge us. We saw you look down but no wave…nothing!! That’s the kind of sportsmanship that will get you NOWHERE!! If this is how you treat your fans if it be here at Coors field in Denver, CO or at Spearmint Rhino in Las Vegas then so be it, So take you rockies hat a stick it!!

  34. Peter Abraham June 21st, 2007 at 12:05 pm

    Big Daddy:

I apologize but I didn’t hear you. I probably was listening to my voice recorder and transcribing quotes, which is what usually happens for the first 2-3 innings.

    I certainly meant no offense.

Meanwhile, if you’re shouting at me at the Spearmint Rhino instead of watching the scenery, you have issues. I’ve never been to the one in Vegas, only Industry City.

  35. saucy June 21st, 2007 at 12:16 pm

    haha pete. nice blog dan.

and i’m calling a 1-2-3 inning for farns in the 8th tonight. and tomorrow we can all think ‘the hat’ sitting in his locker.

  36. saucy June 21st, 2007 at 12:16 pm

    thank, not think…

  37. Farnsworth Bentley June 21st, 2007 at 12:21 pm

    Saucy:

By a “1-2-3 inning” for Farns, you must surely mean back-to-back-to-back HR’s.

  38. BAD DADDY VLAD June 21st, 2007 at 12:29 pm

Hey pete your #1 fan will be in section 139 wearing in an orange syracuse jersey plese dont break his heart again.. Lets Go YANKS

  39. rbizzler June 21st, 2007 at 12:50 pm

    Hey JeffNJ,
The only problem that I have with Duncan is that Shelley is a strike out machine (61 in 237 AB’s this year). I don’t see that getting better if he starts facing MLB pitching on the regular. He may be worth a shot, but I wouldn’t expect much.

  40. Drew June 21st, 2007 at 1:34 pm

“Kyle likes to shoot things in the woods”

LOL, now that’s a funny line!

  41. Tiffany June 21st, 2007 at 1:50 pm

You know, Farnsworthless should really make a list available to the media …of areas that he’s hunting in because if his aim with a riffle is anything close to his lack of ability to throw strikes…we should all be very afraid. The general public should be warned of such things.

  42. Baseball June 21st, 2007 at 2:29 pm

I can’t figure out why all you people are this suprised about Farnsworth. He’s a career choker; try watching him when he was on Chicago and also during the playoffs with the Braves. Cashman was stupid signing him just as he was with Jaret Wright who also was a proven bum.

Anyhow, Farnsworth should spend less time fooling around with the ladies with Scott Proctor and more time working on how to locate his pitches.

  43. Jordan June 21st, 2007 at 2:37 pm

    Pete,

That was the single greatest post of all time.

Thank you, it made my day at work that much better.

  44. Rockin' Rich June 21st, 2007 at 3:46 pm

Is that a MacBook Pro you’re using there, Peter?

  45. Rockin' Rich June 21st, 2007 at 4:11 pm

Hmmm. Maybe not. Looks like a Titanium G4…

  46. Peter Abraham June 21st, 2007 at 8:08 pm

    PowerBook G4

  47. Rockin' Rich June 22nd, 2007 at 9:27 am

Right. Careful with that; the hinges go bad.
