Statement from Bud Selig

June
21

“Following certain statements reported in USA Today on May 18, I directed Jason Giambi to meet with members of my staff. Mr. Giambi did so and, in the opinion of my representatives, was fully cooperative and candid in explaining his personal involvement with performance-enhancing substances.

“Two weeks ago I asked Mr. Giambi to submit to an interview with Senator Mitchell and I am pleased that Mr. Giambi has agreed to do so. Mr. Giambi has informed me in a phone conversation that he is willing to discuss with Senator Mitchell his personal involvement with performance-enhancing substances. His willingness to do this is an important step forward in Senator Mitchell’s continued efforts to provide me with a comprehensive report.

“Senator Mitchell has assured me that Mr. Giambi’s interview will be scheduled promptly. Once the interview process has concluded, I will take Mr. Giambi’s level of cooperation into account in determining appropriate further action. I will have no further comment until this procedure is completed. “

do u think the yanks should go after milton bradley? pete?

  2. PA Mike

ok… so we’re punishing Jason for… “taking stuff”?
Is it good “stuff”? Where can I get this “stuff”?
    Is this “stuff” expensive?
Maybe he should “speak no english” like Sammy.
    Does “stuff” translate well?

  3. Stuart

I would bring Mariano in, he needs work and Farnsworth is farnsworth.

let’s see if he can add to the 2 perfect outings this yr!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Stuart

a moralist who said SJ would win at any costs is quite a clown.

newsflash most of these players are; selfish, whiny, dummies.. who cares as long as they do not date my daughters who cares we do not know any of them…………….

that’s right the Yanks are the only team that will sacrifice morals(whatever that means ) to win.. that is why people root for kobe, iverson, the big unit, claude lemiux, etc.

we do not know any of these guys we watch them play a sport that is it…………………

  5. Chicago Dave

Wow, yet another loss in a game decided by 2 runs or less. What’s that make us now, 6-21 in these games?! God, that’s awful!!!

  6. EricVA

This whole “further action” thing is quite frankly BS. It’s like if I were hanging out in a bar in NY and said something like, “Remember when we could smoke in bars? I used to smoke in this bar.” And then a cop overhears me and gives me a ticket.

  7. Matt

Farnsworth is Farnsworthless again, bring in Gagne or Otsuka plzzz.

  8. Stuart

well there goes the 1,2,3 from kyle.. he is my least favorite player for so many reasons it is unbeleivable….

  9. Chicago Dave

So, who pitches in long relief tomorrow after Igawa makes yet another early exit?

  10. Stuart

that is why I hate farnsworth. his innefectiveness is one thing his total baseball stupidity is the reason.. why throw it to first, there is absolutely no reason…

with that talent if he had a brain there is no way he would be this bad….

  11. Chicago Dave

OK, just to say something positive…Jorge is 2-4 today and now has the average up to .345. Who would have thought that Jorge could ever reach (and maintain) such a lofty average!!! A bright spot in an otherwise forgettable Yankee loss…

  12. Stuart

chicago dave hold the loss post for a few minutes..

jorge has not gotten a big hit the whole series and he has had chances, he is part of the lack of big hits gang……

  13. Chicago Dave

Stuart – A catcher who bats .345 and you’re going to knock him for not having enough “big hit”? Come on, man…Most teams would kill to have a catcher that’s batting .345!

As for the “early” loss post…Hey, I’ve been watching the same team everyone else has all year…Certain trends have become obvious.

  14. Stuart

yea. you were right, what is there 2 runs or less record it may be like 6 -21, I think 2nd worse in baseball.

the rockies made all the plays.

btw that was ball 4 to phillips but I doubt it would have mattered. we need to regroup AGAIN….

  15. Chicago Dave

Yep, this team just not come back in close games.

  16. Stuart

abreu and damon did absolutely nothing good this sereis.
you same is true for most of the other players but not to this extent.

what is Jeter doing on 2nd base the last few days? Getting into rundowns, the rockies announcers harped on it for 20 minutes….

no big plays for the yanks the whole series from the Matsui just missed foul HR down the list to the posada bases hard smash right to the SS…no clutch hits.

BTW does Cano ever get a clutch hit???I have not seen many he hits about 220 with the bases loaded, he has farnsworth type baseball IQ…

  17. Basura

Stuart, all Yankee pickoff attempts are called from the bench. Hate Farnsworth for whatever reasons you want but you’re wrong on this one.

  18. Stuart

thanks Basura I will. he has no baseball accumen..

3 1,2,3 innings from there 8th inning guy in over 23 tries… he has at least 1 guy on base in over 85% of his outings…

no clutch hitting for the team…..none…..they need to start winning consistently……………

  19. SJ44

    Thanks for the support Stuart.

I save my moral positions for issues that would require me to make such a stance.

Whether athletes use PED’s is not my moral issue. I could care less if they do or don’t. Its not my body and its none of my business.

Anybody who thinks Selig is taking a “moral” stance with Giambi is a moron.

Selig knew, like EVERYBODY in baseball knew, they had a PED issue. But, the money was flowing and they weren’t taking any moral stance on it.

Now, its just a guy (Selig) trying to put a nice guy, but a lug (Giambi) in a vice to try and reverse his rep as the “steroid issue”.

Its has nothing to do with morality.

  20. Go NYR

Biggest difference is Abreu looks lost again. He is even using that bunt again. It looks like he is back in his extended slump again. If he werent back in his slump, he wouldnt be bunting

  21. SJ44

Farnsworth does that stuff on his own. Torre told him to stop a couple of weeks ago. Most pickoffs are called from the bench.

However, nobody on the bench was calling a pickoff on a catcher. That was all on Kyle.

This series showcased the weakness of the team. Its the little things. Lack of situational hitting, poor baserunning, poor pitching in key spots. Too many walks from the bullpen, starters giving up runs the half inning after they score, etc. All of the things that come back to haunt you.

Torre puts Damon in center today and the winning run is the result because Holliday is able to go from first to third on a routine single and the SF becomes the 4th run. Poor decision by Torre and it played a huge role in the outcome of the game.

This team has done a poor job with the little, fundamental things all year. In close, low scoring, road games, that gets you beat.

They have six games coming up against really bad baseball teams. Somehow, someway, they have to win 5 of them and salvage this roadtrip.

Okay, so I’m off on his ERA by .03 thus far.

If anything is more fun that the Yanks losing, it’s Fat Roger taking the loss!

Redsox Fans calling Roger’s Fat slob .. Please look at the Mirror Redsox Fans, Curt Schilling came overweight in spring training. His big Fat belly are showing. It’s so disgusting.

  23. Dan

Damon is no good. He plays with no heart here. On the Sox he played like an Animal. He knew he was getting over the hill and figured he’d go such the Yankees dry and lay back collecting big checks.

He rubs me the wrong way. Damon Must Go!!

I really hate this bum. I was against this signing from the begining and I’m sad to say it looks like I was 100% correct.

If I see Damon or Myers walking, outside Nyc streets, I swear I will punch both of them in face for being phony and fraud. That’s how I feel right now.

Damon was slowing down defensively while in Boston. I hated how he never dived for ball and let them land right in front of him, while fans had to watch the opposition dive and rob hits from our players. It was very frustrating and I was glad Theo didn’t re-sign him (and probably one of the few Sox fans who felt that way at the time). Crisp is by no means a great player, but not unlike your Melky, he is a very good defensive player (I’d say Coco is great defensively) player and we can live with his batting average if he keeps playing GG defense. Coco’s defense is just one of many reasons the Sox are winning. He has saved many hits and runs

If you can’t win close games, at least half the time, you’re going nowhere fast. That’s why Mariano was always so valuable. Those close games were winnable, almost always, even if they didn’t always win them.

With this team, you can pretty much tell within th first 2-3 innings what kind of a game it’s going to be. Sure, sometimes, they’ll surprise you, but, really, if they start slow, they mostly end slower. Andy collapsed yesterday under the pressure of having to pitch a shut-out to win, but for the most part the pitchers did not give up an awful lot a runs. They did not hold their small leads, and aggravatingly gave those leads RIGHT BACK, but this team was “in every game, so far as not being many runs behind (except for late last night, when Andy imploded, or as he said, “stopped pitching.) Did Alex Rodriguez even hit a ball in the air in 3 days? Not that I’m blaming him, I’m not—the whole team was pretty awful, if not with the bats, then on the basepaths. Humidor or no humidor, the temperature here was up and they Yankees are a team capable of putting the ball out of that place. Someone said Rocket threw only fastballs today because his breaking ball wasn’t breaking because of the altitude. And the other team? Did they throw only fastballs?

There’s no one player her to put the “blame on. It’s teamwide. When they hit, they ALL hit; when they don’t, NO ONE does. It’s not good. And they don’t play situational baseball on a consistent basis. The seem to stop being the team they should be whenevern the opponent is a running, small-ball team (like the Angels). The lose it against young pitchers who are good, but not great, if they haven’t seen them before.

The last three games were just not fun to watch, and it’s not because they lost. It’s because of the way they played (or didn’t).

  25. SJ44

Damon is hurt. Playing him is on the Yankees, not on Damon.

The guy had a great year last year and is hurt right now.

Just DL him. I don’t understand why the Yankees aren’t doing it.

Ripping on Damon is just foolish. Its all that foolish Red Sox paranoia. The Red Sox would take back Johnny Damon TOMMOROW. You think they like Coco Crisp??

Carl Pavano gets killed by Yankee fans for not playing through his injuries. Now, we are going to kill Damon for trying?? Makes no sense to me.

Its up to the team to stop the player from hurting himself and the team by playing when he is hurt. Damon being in the lineup today was the mistake of Joe Torre, not Johnny Damon.

Damon is not the reason why they got swept. They lost because the entire team doesn’t do the little things well enough to win close, low scoring games.

  26. Dan

Damon hasn’t showed this season that He’s healthy and be productive to produce to scoring runs.

  27. Angel©

Exactly how many names do you have that you post under “Dan”? You think just because you change names that somehow your typing style of random capitalization and posts filled the Red Sox Benedict Arnold paranoia aren’t noticed? lol

You have to do a better job than that.

  28. Drive 4-5

The Yanks poor baserunning and lack of situational hitting kind of reminds me of the period in Toronto where Torre had his closed door meeting. Give the Rockies credit, they outplayed us. But the Yanks didn’t exactly play inspired baseball in Colorado and shame on them for that.

  29. Doreen

I was certainly impressed by the Rockies. They pretty much get no coverage so it was a surprise to see, for instance, that they have a really, really good shortstop and that their starting pitching was very good. All I ever heard about was Todd Helton and how he’s kind of available but has a huge contract.

As for Johnny Damon, I love the guy. He’s a gamer, plays hurt, gives 100% all the time. But his 100% is now at about 50% of normal, and he’s got to just bite the bullet and not fight being on the DL. It’s apparently a matter of pride to him that he’s never been on the DL, but it is clearly hurting the Yankees for him to be playing hurt this year. It looks like the injuries this year are not the kind you can play through; or maybe, simply, his body is crying out for mercy — “Put me on the DL — puh-leeze!” It should have been done a month ago, at least.

The season continues, though, and if they win more than they lose the rest of the way, this will be a blip on the screen. Onto SF. Let’s go Kei.

  30. Jennifer

This doesn’t validate Mitchell investigation one bit. Jason was blackmailed in to cooperating. Shows what he thinks of us the baseball attending public. He thinks we are idiots!

  31. Other Pete

Does anyone else feel like Selig’s acting like a high school principal here? You know, being all blustery with this one individual in this charade that doesn’t seem inclined to accomplish anything beyond allowing him to show a threatening presence?

If Giambi is to be held accountable, fine, but it’s a stupid ritual sacrifice if no one else is going to be treated this way (and to put through the ringer like this one of the few people on the players’ side that’s actually acknowledging what we all already know — so silly). It’s times like this when I wished there was a standing bill to revoke baseball’s antitrust exemption ready to be voted upon at any time, a sword of Damocles to keep them honest.

It’s time someone give Bud Selig an ultimatum to come sit down and be grilled as to why MLB has gone kicking and screaming into opening up about performance-enhancing drugs, and still does its best to avoid making any truly meaningful gestures rather than putting on a display and saying “Oh, yes, look, we’re doing something about it, see? Just look at the serious expressions on our faces when we say, ‘drugs are very, very bad.’”

  32. Other Pete

They may as well wheel in a cardboard cutout of Nancy Reagan with a comic balloon saying “Just say no!”

  33. saucy

i called a 1-2-3 inning for farnsworth yesterday and was wrong. though he didn’t give up a hit or a walk. that’s gotta count for something on my part… i probably just didn’t interpret the ‘vibes’ the right way.
