Again the Yanks new they did not have innings eaters going into the season but there was no way to deal with that issue… would keeping jaret wright or rj do it/ No.. Lilly and meche and tie up over$100 mill do it? that would be insane so cash said lets get some hard throwers in the pen and bash.. they have hard throwers in the pen like the white sox but to this point they have not produced…..The yanks pen has not been as bad as the white sox but that is not saying much…

people forget the Yanks reserves and minors for the last few yrs. have been so dreadful that cashman has done all he could this yr. to try to make the big club better and replenish the minors…

shilling is 40, tavarez is 33, the knuckleballer is 40, there staff is not young.. Okajima is 31 and donnely is older, they have not had there bad luck yet under your reasoning……..

Even at 40, Schilling eats innings. That’s important in today’s game.

Innings eaters cover up bullpen weaknesses. In Boston’s case, they are able to get the ball to Papelbon because their starters eat innings. Something the Yankee starters (absent Wang and Pettitte for most of the season) do on a consistent basis. That’s how you cover for a bad bullpen.

The age thing works in various ways. Such as injuries. Guys breakdown more when they are over 32. The studies teams have done show it, and that has hurt the Yankees the past few years.

Where it really shows up is in the pitching staff. The Yankees don’t have a lot of innings eaters among the starters and that exposes the bullpen. The real weakness within this team.

The Angels have done a good team of adding a mix of youth and experience to their team. Its a balance that I wish the Yankees could strive to be when re-tooling the team.

I think age isn’t THE problem with the team. But, it is a problem. We have seen it this year.

The sox will have there starting issues also and then the donnelys, lopez, snyder hasbeens will be exposed…

the Yanks knew starting pitching would be a problem the only way they could have dealt with that would have been to overpay for matsuzaka, meche, zito, or Lilly which I oppose no matter what happens this season.. Do you think Sf likes the 7 yr Zito contract??I think he will pitch better but not 7 yr $100 + mill better…….

Beckett, Dice K, Schilling, Wakefield and Tavarez have been great all year. They didn’t have to start DeSalvo 5 times. Rookies 11 times. They weren’t going to the pen in the 4th inning every single game. You didn’t see Donnelly pitch 15 games in a row. Timlin every night.

Starting pitching wins. And with great SP, you also never get into long losing streaks.
