Pregame chatter: Sorry for the delay with the lineups. I was up in the stands visiting with the family of Mark Leary, the late sports editor of the Journal News and one of my mentors. Lynn, Robbie and Jonathan are on a vacation trip to Florida and stopped by Camden Yards. They’re great people.

Yankees took no BP today and had a late report time. It was a trick that worked earlier this season. We’ll see what happens.

UPDATE, 7:31 p.m.: Spoke to Brian Cashman this afternoon. He is interested in acquiring a first baseman but offered no comment on Shea Hillenbrand. He did say, however, that he will not be trading Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain or Ian Kennedy. That greatly decreases the odds of any blockbuster deal. As for other topics, Jason Giambi remains in a protective boot and isn’t close to returning to play, although he is expected back at some point around August. Hughes has started his throwing program and a few days ago threw off the half mound in Tampa. Like everybody else, Cashman is puzzled at the slump. “These are players who have performed before who for whatever reason are not performing now,” he said. “We led the majors in scoring last season and I thought we had a better team this season.”

UPDATE, 9:10 p.m.: Based on the lack of movement in the bullpen, Torre seemed to want to get 8 out of Wang then go to Rivera. But it’s not working out that way.

UPDATE, 9:23: The tarp is on the field. Back with more info as I get it.

UPDATE, 9:34 p.m.: Tarp off the field. We should be starting again sometime soon.

UPDATE, 9:39 p.m.: About to get back underway. Mike Myers on the mound.

UPDATE, 10:02 p.m.: What a circus. Now the rain is back and the Yankees lead 8-6. Nice job, John Parish. Robert Parish would have been better.

UPDATE, 10:14 p.m.: I’ve had a few people e-mail me saying the Yankees don’t show enough fight. They showed some fight there. You see Jeter slap his hands when he got to second base? Give ‘em this, they ain’t quitting.

Just FYI, under the new rules the game would be suspended and picked up from the point it was stopped.

UPDATE, 10:38 p.m.: The tarp is coming off, so we should have baseball in 20 minutes or so. Yankees up 8-6, Jeter on second with two outs and Matsui up. No word on whether Chris Ray will be pitching.

UPDATE, 10:51 p.m.: OK, I lied. They just put the tarp back on the field. It’s raining a little again but more must be on the way. The good news is that I get a huge bonus from my paper for long games. Usually a weekend at the company villa in St. Thomas.

UPDATE, 11:31 p.m.: Game suspended. No word on what day it will be resumed.

  1. Rocco

    Everyone is lagging tonight..

Pete’s lineup posted in the bottom of the first and YES tuning into the game with Damon already down 0-2.

  2. YanksFanLV

I was hoping that the late post meant that something major was going on with the team.. guess not.

  3. Mike NYY

Yankees took no BP today and had a late report time. It was a trick that worked earlier this season. We’ll see what happens.

I`d make them report early and make them run laps

  4. kasey

working like gangbusters so far. if cabrera breaks a sweat tonight, it’ll be because of the heat.

  5. 2007 Yankees

Yeah….reservations must have been booked for early tonight. They are trying for a 2 hour game.

  6. JFud25

Thank GOD the WNBA starts soon.

  7. YanksFanLV

wow, thats pretty rough when you’re waiting on the WNBA hahaha

  8. gianthinker

    Peter –

According to Newsday, the Yankees are engaged in serious talks with the Angels regarding a Shea Hillenbrand deal.

Why would we do this? They already designated him like two days ago and they only have ten days to move him or dump him. Wait the ten days and if he’s available fine. Dont cost yourself players to get this bum. Unless you’re going to get rid of a Meyers or Farnsworth and you get them to throw in Figgins or someone its not worth it.

  9. JeffG

Pete, this team is beyond “tricks”{ – they need a total overhaul. An overhaul that is highly unlikely given the ridiculous contracts the Yankees are stuck with.

Ah well, at least loosing will get rid of the riff-raff band-wagoners.

  10. TJ

    lol JeffG

  11. Dave

Um, I think Mora was safe.

    Maybe we caught a break!

  12. Colorado Yank

Wow, just logged on.. Looks like the bats are blistering tonight..simply a joke.

  13. Batty

I can’t watch but am listening – what the heck happened to that play with Mora? Sterling is confusing me.

  14. jason

Coming into this game, Cabrera has walked 49 in 103 innings but the team strategy tonight apparently is to hack away.

  15. YanksFanLV

There’s the power we have been looking for at 1B

  16. Rocco

    YEY!

Time to bust out the Jameson!

  17. TJ

    Welcome back Andy

  18. Zion

    Good job, Any.

  19. TJ

yankee score first in the third inning…haven’t seen that in a while

  20. Mike

    Welcome back, Mr. Phillips.

  21. Matthew

what a revelation, Andy Phillips needs more than one start to be able to contribute.

  22. Jennifer

Nice play by Alex, and nice reach by ANDY :D

  23. Jennifer

Great we’re back in the hole. :( luckly for that play by Alex or we’d be down by 2

  24. gayle

Please tell me why Michael Kay has to get so excited about an opposing players home run. He is the Yankees broadcaster he gets just as excited for the opponents as he does for ours. Maybe it is just my aggrevation going on to someone else.

  25. Andrea

I’ve never seen someone’s home run trot as fast as Andy Phillips just ran.

  26. Colorado Yank

Why is it that Yankee pitchers – starters and relievers – cannot pitch to hitters who can’t hit. This happened when the pitchers came to bat during interleague and it just happened now. Don’t get it. Walking a .225 hitter…..

  27. TJ

Lets get a homer here Alex

  28. Andrea

no gayle–I’ve wondered the same thing MANY times myself.

  29. tonyb

Michael Kay gets that excited for opposing home runs because he is trying to prove that he is NOT a homer of biblical proportions.

I’m watching on Sopcast just so I don’t have to hear him tonight. O’s announcers are bland.

…and another Yankee pitcher gives up the lead in the bottom half of the frame.

  30. Jennifer

Can Bobby finally do something for this team?

  31. Jennifer

Is bobby going to try to bunt?

  32. Zion

    Good job, Jorge. Very patient.

  33. Colorado Yank

Yes… Bobby will get the second out of the inning… right on queue.

  34. Andrea

Does this O’s manager type guy serve now as both manager AND pitching coach?

  35. Andrea

Holy crap. Abreu just drew a walk.

  36. Jennifer

I really should be packing instead of talking on the computer. LOL

    Bases juiced for Melky!!

Anyone hear who the catcher will be tomorrow?

  37. Zion

Yanks hitters do not help out Daniel Cabrera. He seems losing strike zone.

  38. randyhater

Cashman said, “I thought we had a better team this year?” Now that little peanut head is throwing in the towel too? He should start posting here.

I hope he realizes that if things don’t turn around fast he’ll be watching the Hughes/Chamberlin/Kennedy golden years as a paying customer.

  39. Jennifer

    Robbie we need a single!!

  40. Jennifer

Or getting hit in the ass. lol, Come on Andy!!

  41. Zion

Go! Andy. Hit it out again.

  42. Jennifer

Randy, I believe Brian is committed to keeping our young arms. As long as he is at the helm, they will be there. I would get very nervous if Cash was fired though.

  43. Andrea

Jennifer–I also should be packing. I leave for Europe in a couple days. And I’m gonna miss the all star game!!! Such a poorly planned trip :(

I’m trying to not be mad that they just got a 3rd out with bases loaded. We got the go ahead run in. it’s ok.

  44. Sally

Does anyone know when a list of Old Timers’ going to Old Timers’ Day will be announced or where I can find it on the web? When are the All Stars being announced?

  45. YanksFanLV

would have been nice for Andy to save his hr for bases loaded, beggers can’t be choosers though.

  46. Jennifer

I’m going down to LBI for the weekend after work tomorrow. Trying to beat the beach traffic. It is supposed to be a beautiful weekend. :)

Have fun in Europe, where in Europe are you going?

  47. Jennifer

yanksfan, he’d put on 2 nice ab, I can’t really say that for the rest of the lineup.

  48. Andrea

I might be an idiot. What’s LBI?

I’m going to Paris to visit a friend, then I’m flying up to Nottingham to visit ANOTHER friend, then I’m going to London to present a paper at an academic conference on F. Scott Fitzgerald. I had tickets to Old-Timer’s Day too :( But that’s ok. They made for a nice Father’s Day gift.

  49. TJ

Yankees are playing and showing some action tonight. I don’t think they want to come home with a loss and deal with fans booing them tomorrow.

  50. Andrea

I LOVE seeing Jorge catching a stealer. LOVE it.

  51. Jennifer

Long Beach Island, NJ. It is about 30 minutes north of Atlantic City. It is the long skinny island that runs next to Jersey. I always use the abbreviation and half the time no one knows where I am talking about.

Sounds like fun!! I’ve never been out of the country :(

  52. Rocco

    LBI = Long Beach Island.

  53. Jennifer

I know it’s nice to see Jorge getting back into his old ways. Poor guy had no help from his pitchers.

  54. Andrea

I assumed it was Long Beach Island, not sure why, but I’ve never actually heard of Long Beach Island.

I’ve lived in NY my whole life and I’ve only JUST been to Canada at the end of May. In fact, I was in Montreal when the Yankees were in Toronto. So close! But it’s easier to travel to Europe when you know people. It’s SO expensive because the American dollar is worthless. But when I’m in Paris and Nottingham, I have friends to stay with, and for the conference I got a room for about $30 a night in the university dorms :)

My friend from Paris came to 2 Yankee games with me. By the middle of the second one, the only thing she didn’t get was why the Angels scored when Scott Proctor walked in a run. She just didn’t get it. I wish I idn’t get it. But she was “mooooooooooooooose”ing along with everyone. It was so much fun.

  55. Andrea

Kay: “What a play by Brian Roberts.” Again, WHAT TEAM IS IT YOU WORK FOR? shut up.

  56. Ross Perot for President

    Let’s go Os!
    Sweeeeeeeep!

  57. Dean

Wang is a DP machine !!!

  58. Jennifer

Ross don’t you have another election to screw up?

  59. Ross Perot for President

This being a close game. The yanks are destined to lose.

  60. TJ

    haha ha Jennifer

  61. Jennifer

    Thanks TJ :)

Looks like they brought their bats tonight.

  62. Jennifer

Nice bunt by Andy. It’s like he’s waving his hand saying hey don’t forget about me!!

  63. TJ

Yankees are hitting much better tonight. Wang’s throwing some good ones

  64. TJ

lol Andy’s home and looking good too

  65. Rocco

Did Damon just get a hit?

    The sky is falling.

  66. YanksFanLV

Is it just me or is this game moving exceptionally fast.

  67. TJ

Nice hit by Damon. Now these look like the Yankees we know and love

  68. Andrea

Yanksfan: yeah, it’s pretty fast. Wang just threw a 6 pitch inning–i’d say that’s fast.

  69. Jennifer

Okay is Kay watching the same game we are? Pitch out nothing doing? Um Johnny was going, but stopped (he didn’t get a good jump) So he was able to get back quickly.

  70. Andrea

That’s why we love Michael Kay.

  71. Jennifer

The just showed the radar, and Baltimore is about to get smashed!!

  72. Andrea

    This catcher looks absolutely miserable.

  73. Rocco

I want to see the Matsui that I saw in the Yankeeography last night.

  74. Andrea

Ken Singleton really likes to say “scamper.”

  75. Jennifer

This blog is very slow tonight.

  76. Jennifer

    I smell a grand slam!!

  77. YanksFanLV

    time for the Abomb

  78. TJ

    bases loaded

  79. Jennifer

    Will he groove a pitch?

  80. TJ

okay they are going to walk him

  81. ansky

    ARGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

  82. Jennifer

Well my sense of smell is bad. :(

  83. TJ

man what happened? I missed that

  84. Dean

58 pitches ONLY for Wang ?!!

  85. Ross Perot for President

    Alex Ridiculouz!

  86. TJ

Well at least we are actually playing defense and hitting tonight. I think our momentum is back. Much better than last night

  87. Kurtis Jensen

what the HALE ???….A-Rod has a 3-1 pitch with the bases juiced and instead of taking it up the middle or to right, he reverts to trying to PULL everything and then GIDP to KILL THE RALLY and END THE INNING ???? Some un a BATCH !

  88. Andrea

Jennifer–you called the Damon home run the other day. What’s happening? Have ou lost your touch?

  89. Andrea

Kurtis–calm it down. It’ll be ok.

  90. Andrea

What was that you were saying about playing defense?

  91. Rocco

    :(

  92. ansky

cue the comeback music as bobby has a tea party in the corner

  93. Andrew

    The floodgates have opened.

  94. Beth

They’d better get this game in quick. There are some pretty harsh storms coming through right now, and I’m only about 45 minutes South of Baltimore!

  95. tonyb

I’d rather have Les Nessman in right field than Abreu. Bobby runs like he is a clumsey little leaguer out there.

  96. Mike NYY

Would anyone else walk Roberts here?

  97. CA Yanks Fan

Abreu didn’t look like he was going 100% on that ball. It looked pretty catchable to me.

  98. Ivan

    Let’s get a DP!

  99. Dean

Wang walked him to get 4th DP set up !!!

  100. Rocco

Well Abreu was playing right-center because Millar is a dead pull hitter.

  101. Mike NYY

    What’s happened to Wang????!!!!!

  102. Andrea

Paul O’Neill would be better in the field at his 44 years than Abreu.

  103. Dean

    So much for that…

  104. Andrea

What happened to Wang is the same thing that happened to Andy Pettitte. It’s called Bobby Abreu SUCKING in the outfield.

  105. ansky

who had any hope we’d win a close game? Theres no such thing in Yankeeland.

  106. Jeff NJ

ok it’s official, we’re cursed. Gibbons has been absolutely awful this year, and even he comes through against us.

  107. TJ

okay Wang’s finger must be bothering him again. IT’s the7th inning. He did well but now it’s time to sit

  108. TJ

    Who’s coming up? Mo?

  109. Andrea

you have GOT to be kidding me.

  110. Andrew

If that throw by Posada isn’t a microcosm of the season, I don’t know what is.

  111. Dean

    totally speechless

  112. ansky

im sorry…i have to laugh because really, could it get any worse? Jorge airmails one to Matsui. Amazing, utterly amazing.

Hold on, i need to get my broom

  113. Andrea

I blame this inning on Abreu.

  114. Kurtis Jensen

How could we NOT Blow this game ? I mean, we have a chance to put them away in the top of the inning,,,then comes JOE TORRE again, NOT HAVING CLUE NUMBER ONE when to take out the starter….WHY DOES HE ALWAYS WAIT UNTIL THE STARTER HAS NOT ONLY BLOWN THE LEAD,,,but TURNED IT INTO A LOSING PROPOSITION before taking the starter out ? I swear, the Yankees are proving that they can find ANY WAY POSSIBLE to LOSE GAMES…..THIS TEAM AND MANAGER TOTALLY STINKS and there needs to be an overhaul RIGHT AFTER THIS FRIGGIN’ GAME !! HOW a 200 million dollar team can go 1-8 on a road trip facing Colorado, SF and BALT ? WE STINK and it is about time that the BOSS got some BALLS and started FIRING PEOPLE RIGHT FRIGGIN’ NOW !!!

  115. gayle

please tell me why no one was warming up when this started to unravel. I know the bullpen hasnt been great and you always hope for the DP with Wang but jeez

  116. TJ

    Man thats unlike Posada.

  117. tonyb

Seems about the right time of night for SJ44 to show up and tell us how much this team stinks. Unfortunately, he would be right.

  118. Tony

This team is maddening to watch

  119. Chicago Dave

Wang seems like a cool young guy and he’s a decent enough pitcher…But he’s no ace…Although Bobby Abreu in right would make many a great pitcher appear ordinary! Another disgraceful evening…Swept by the mighty O’s!!! And still Cashman won’t do a darned thing…except go out and get more dead weight by the name of Shea Hillenbrand. Bob Watson, where are you?!

  120. TJ

I feel bad for Posada because he plays hard and I know he feels awful after that. But can our luck get any worse?

  121. ansky

ok, i got my broom. Now im going to snap it in half and its gonna be a sepuku evening.

  122. gayle

    of course NOW it rains

  123. Rocco

    this is depressing.

  124. Andrea

Couldn’t it have started raining an inning ago?

  125. TJ

I guess Torre’s saving Mo. Wonder if he’ll use Proctor?

  126. Stuart

This si not Torres fault and I think he should be fired. The guy threw 82 pitches in total. this is the Boston implosion all over again.

When you think things cannot get worse guess what they can..This team is so BAD it is mind boggling…

This is Wang. He is our ace he was up 4 -2 and imploded. Walks Paul Bako on 4, he is slightly better the Nieves… DOuble to Gibbons the guys is hitting 210..

The beat goes on….no one is playing well AROD DP on 3 -1 count, nice throw Jorge, Abreu way to get the ball, BLAH BLAH BLAH..

NO ANYTHING, IT IW MIND BOGGLING…..

  127. Chicago Dave

TJ – At this point in the season, I don’t think you could call it bad luck anymore. It’s simply bad play, and it has spread to every member of this team like a plague.

  128. Ross Perot for President

    yippee-ki-yay, Yanks!

  129. Stuart

Kurti Jensen Wang threw in total like 82 pitches and if you have not been watching are pen is not exactly stellar……..

    get a friggin clue…….

  130. Andrea

Stuart–this is the FIRST bad inning. They’be been playing well the rest of the night.

Yankee fans are starting to sound an AWFUL lot like Mets fans with this “one bad play = my team sucks.”

  131. Zion

Got to sit Wang after 6th inning. He does not have good stuff tonight. It is the bad coaching that causes Yanks a game.

  132. Eddie

This is just a terrible team.

  133. YankeeJosh

Andrea, I was thinking the same thing myself.

This team has been bad this year but also suits the saying ‘if we didn’t have bad luck we’d have no luck at all’

  134. Dean

1-8 and we will face A’s, Twin, and Angels. The way Yanks is playing, we’d be lucky if we get 2-8. Guys,

  135. TJ

I agree Chicago Dave you made a good point. It just seems so unreal. I cannot believe it especially when you go back and look at the last teams to beat us are losing to other teams.

  136. Jennifer

I missed Bobby’s play, was it really that bad?

Also I cannot stand to listen to John Sterling. He is ripping Alex for not hitting the ball in the top of the 7th. He gets on an issue and HARPS. It is bad enough listening to how bad the Yankees are playing we don’t need to hear him and his doomsday broadcast.

  137. Chicago Dave

One of the worst teams in all of baseball is playing rope-a-dope with our pitchers…

  138. Zion

Yanks’ Pen is too shaky to hold the lead, anyway.

  139. Rocco

“Got to sit Wang after 6th inning. He does not have good stuff tonight. It is the bad coaching that causes Yanks a game.”

are you serious?!?! He thew 50 something pitches after 6 innings and only gave up 2 runs. You’re an idiot.

  140. Andrea

Jennifer–Kevin Millar got a triple. That’s how bad the play was. It wasn’t as bad as when Ortiz got a triple, but Millar is not a runner. So that’s gotta tell you something.

  141. Summer

Hey Rocco, I think you’re right, but can you please express your opinion without insulting other posters?

  142. YankeeJosh

    Dean,

the one thing to hold out some hope is that the Yankees have been a much better team at home this year than on the road. I believe since May, the only road series the Yankees have won are against the Rangers in Texas, the Red Sox in Boston and the White Sox in Chicago when they were reeling. They beat up some decent teams at home, so maybe the homestand won’t be this epically bad.

  143. dark1p

Older fans out there may recall how the 1964 AL Champ Yankees–who took the Cards to seven games in the WS–turned into the 77-85 suck-ass Yankees of 1965, 25 games behind Minnesota. These things happen. Mercifully, not that often.

The best thing about that season was that the Red Sox were 62-100. We won’t get satisfaction like that this year.

If only Joe Pepitone was still in shape….

  144. Chicago Dave

“So that’s gotta tell you something.”

Yes, it tells me I hope to god that none of the players we gave up for this stiff turns into anything! Why can’t Bobby pop a hamstring already? Oh, that’s right…he doesn’t run hard enough to injure his hamstring!!!

  145. Jennifer

I figured as much :( You would think Bobby has one of those dog collars on and when ever he gets near the fence he gets zapped.

  146. Rocco

    Summer

i’m just frustrated… If Joe did take him out there, the same idiot would have said Torre was a moron for taking him out.

  147. Jennifer

Is there any chance this game starts again?

  148. Stuart

andrea are you serious. 1 bad inning!!!!!!!!!Yeah 1 bad inning wipes out 6 good ones…

they are losing to a team with Paul Bako at catcher, brendan fahey at SS, and Jay Payton in CF…

Reality check Baltimore does have very good starting pitching but there lineup is pathetic………

I love the Yanks this is killing me but let’s be real THIS IS A DOSGRACE…THOSE WORDS ARE NOT TO HARSH THIS IS A DISGRACE..

PETER YOUR BUDDY WANG came up big tonight, no excuses the guy left after throwing 82 pitches he started the inning with a 4 to 2 lead..

disgrace is not harsh enough to tell you what this gutless team is doing. cano can take the rest of the game off he got his 1 hit, woopty dooooooooooooooo, yeah……..

  149. Chicago Dave

I hope this game gets called…Can’t stand to continue to watch the Yankee pitchers get victimized by Double A hitting “talent.”

  150. TJ

This is pretty bad when our best pitchers can’t hold this team down.

  151. Jennifer

Well sorry Chicago Dave, you don’t get your wish. The tarp is off the field.

  152. Chicago Dave

Jay Gibbons becomes David Ortiz…What a remarkable transformation! Only against the Yankees…

  153. Chicago Dave

DAMN!!! Two more innings of this garbage?!

Well, at least now the outfield grass will now be wet. Maybe Bobby will fall on his ass and strain a butt muscle…

  154. Dean

    YankeesJosh,

Yes Yanks should play better in their homestand, just that it’s very tough to be optimistic right now given our records, playing and coaching…

  155. EricNS

Right now the only way htey can win is if they play the Bad News Bears!

  156. Andrea

And we all know, because of Carl Pavano, that a butt muscle strain means you have to get Tommy John surgery…

Stuart–don’t be so harsh and don’t give up yet. If they get no one on base in the 8th, then fine. caps lock and !!!!!!!! all you want.

  157. Colorado Yank

Just read Pete’s piece with Cashman. Maybe Cashman needs to be questioned if he thinks this is a better team than last year. He created no margin for error and now it is showing. I go away for 30 minutes and now the are losing. What the hell happened. How does Kevin Millar hit a triple??????????????

Cashman or Torre need to make a decision, and it should involve playing more from the minors OR sitting the failures down -Matsui, Abreau, Cano, Damon, Mussina, Farnsworth, Bruney, etc – conversation should be this:

For those of you who have no trade clauses, you will give up your rights adn we will move you, otherwise you will be on the bench or DFA’d. For those who do not have clauses, you WILL be traded or sent back to AAA.

No one is trying and I am sick and tire of this crap. This is not the place for Losers. If you want to continue to lose, go to Tampa, KC, SF, etc.

But Cash or Torre would never do that… so, we are stuck.

  158. Ross Perot for President

Now that the game’s officially over, gotta go and celebrate, my friends !

BTW, Gary Sheffield has 10 steals, how many does Jeter have?

  159. Stuart

I want some moves from management. as I say all the time if you are going to go down go down fighting. how about our leader Derek getting in someones face and telling them to play hard and smart????

No this is the “corporate team” they don’t do that, that is childish, below them…. Newsflash they are getting there asses wooped by COlorado, SF, and Baltimore….. Newsflash those teams are not too good…

Let’s see if the men can man it up and comeback in this game>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  160. TJ

Why did we get Carl Pavano again? Was he just the yankee mascot?

  161. Chicago Dave

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but what reason does everyone have for thinking that this Yankee team is going to play better at home? Perhaps you’re all still filled with false hope from that good two-week stretch that came and went so quickly. However, I think the team you’re seeing tonight is the same team that will show up back at the Stadium…and get swept some more by real baseball teams.

  162. Andrea

Gary Sheffield is a schmuck and he could steal 400 bases this season and hit 150 home runs and I’d still be glad he’s gone.

  163. Stuart

Andrea all I ask for is fight and smart. Play hard and smart, they are not doing that so I am pissed.

What is Cahs doing to change this ???Nothing.. Hillebrand is a waste of time move, don’t waste my time…. Bring up the minor league guys and try that, they are not making any big moves so people you are dreaming. Try to right the ship at 80 games vs at 115 games…………….

  164. Pete

i am counting the days until this season is over hurry up sept 30 bye bye abreu damon moose farns myers nieves phillips villone mienky clemens torre hello tex torii

  165. TJ

okay lets see what Moose can do here

  166. Andrea

Carl Pavano–ummmmm. I’m not sure what his purpose is. Someone on some blog had a good idea though. Make him earn his paycheck by sitting in a dunk tank in monument park. Let yankee fans throw balls at the crazy button and let him fall into the tank. Awesome.

  167. Stuart

Chicago Dave one reason they may play better at home is they have all yr. Look at the stats!!!!!!They suck on the road, they are about 8 games below on the road…….

Sorry for the facts but what the hell.

  168. YankeeJosh

    Chicago Dave

They are 20-14 at the Stadium. They swept Cleveland there. The majority of the June hot streak happened there.

It won’t matter if they don’t start playing better home and on the road but they have been markedly better at home, the record speaks for itself.

  169. Jennifer

TJ everyone wanted him. We were the ones who won the carlpalozza tour. :(

  170. TJ

I see he was a big disappointment. He’s making a paycheck and spending it by watching the games like we are . Sad stuff

  171. Stuart

sorry whoever said bye to some players we have; moose for 1 more yr of his mental maturbation BS, to explain why he does not throw strikes, and we have 2 yrs after this of sir Johnny D…ANd the topper is we have Kyle F for one more yr of his crisp pitching………woopty doooooooo..

    happy days are here again……….

  172. jennifer

Andrea they should make the button 5 feet by 5 feet, that way there is no chance anyone misses.

  173. YankeeJosh

    Dean,

Oh tell me about it. I’ve run out of words. This was an ugly inning, hopefully we have a comeback in us!

  174. Andrea

Stuart — I’m with you. It’s frustrating. But for as many mistakes as the players make (coughABREUcough), Torre/Cash make just as many. Bring up Britton. Take your pitcher out before he implodes. Smack Bobby Abreu in the face every time he strikes out and every time he watches a ball go past him because he’s too scared of running into the wall. your face isn’t that pretty–it won’t harm it to run into the wall a few times.

But to give up on a team in the 7th inning is what a Mets fan does. We don’t want to be like them!

  175. TJ

Okay lets see what our hitters can do here

  176. Pete

    86 games left of misery

  177. Andrea

That’s the spirit, TJ! We just need 3 consecutive home runs and we’re good to go!

    No?

  178. soxrulw

Sack up you wusses, Im a sox fan and I believe the Yanks will win tonight, why dont you?

  179. Chicago Dave

You guys can have the stats…I’ll take my gut feeling. I predict this team will be as miserable at home as it has been on this road trip. I’ll be interested to see who ends up being right…

  180. Andrea

My new brilliant suggestion of the day:

during BP, make Abreu run drills where he just starts in right center and runs into the back wall, into the side wall and into the corner, repeatedly, until he has bruises. THen teach him that it’s ok to have a bruise. Then smack him around and make him do it again.

  181. mike s.

Joba took his 1st loss tonight, giving up 2 runs in 5 ip and losing 2-0. Walked 4.

    K’d 10.

  182. Chicago Dave

    Sox fans are morons…

  183. jennifer

Do you pitch run for Jorge??

    Bobby BETTER NOT BUNT!

  184. TJ

Andrea I’m trying sooo hard to be optimistic but it’s got me sweating

  185. Melissa NY

andrea, that just might work. but then again, he might turn into carla and not want to play, using the bruises as an excuse.

  186. soxrule

At least we support our team win or lose, you guys need to sack up and stay positive, your team couldnt really be this terrible could they?

  187. Rocco

ok… no yankee should swing at all here… lets see what cano does.

  188. jennifer

The sky is falling!!! Bobby walked again!!

  189. Chicago Dave

All Abreu can do is walk. He’s the past master of walking…I’ll give him that!

  190. jennifer

Does the Melk man bunt? Or does he deliver?

  191. Andrea

Melissa—I’ll take my chances. If Abreu’s gonna keep being a pansy out there, I’d rather throw Kevin Thompson in and risk the bat…not like Bobby’s got one right now anyway.

  192. jennifer

Chicago he wasn’t walking in May.

  193. Chicago Dave

    soxrule –

No, you don’t support your team even when they lose…Have you been on a Sox blog lately (bet all the comments were real positive after the Seattle sweep, right?)? Probably not…You’re too busy trying to gloat on a Yankee blog.

  194. jennifer

The Melk man knocks twice. LOL He delivered. :)

  195. Dustin in Pakistan

Melky- it aint over till its over

  196. Rocco

Jennifer with the prediction 2 nights in a row.

  197. Andrea

yeah, Sox fans support their team. But that’s cuase they can’t admit that the team ever sucks. They blame it on a curse.

  198. jennifer

:) Tie game!! We will win this game!!

Melk!! :( should he have gone to third? Well maybe not.

  199. Chicago Dave

Cano has zero plate discipline. I bet his idol was Soriano when he was still in the minors…

  200. Andrea

Oh Chris Ray. One of A-Rod’s BFFs.

  201. Stuart

Just win the game….this is not the 98 Yanks..

    JUST WIN THE GAME

  202. soxrule

See told you guys you would go ahead, no one can suck all the time.
    tah
    xoxoxox

  203. Marius

    Yankees tied it. Nice.
Well, they certainly are getting more done tonight and rather happy to see this.
These guys are mostly old timers. Maybe it is time to do away with BP and make it optional.

  204. Chicago Dave

Even though Phillips will never be a good hitter, I can’t bring myself to dislike him. At least he busts his butt when he plays…

  205. Rocco

    FARNSWORTH IN THE 8th
    PROCTOR IN THE 9TH

only if the game is still tied.

  206. TJ

I agree Dave and with all he has going on with his wife and mother…my hats go off to him for putting all he can out there

  207. Chicago Dave

    Rocco -

Uh, you are kidding, aren’t you?! Just making sure…

  208. YankeeJosh

Would a suspended game (tied) count as a victory given how badly things have been going?

  209. Marius

That was a nice stroke of good luck. If Roberts held on, Damon could have been out.

  210. Rocco

    Chicago Dave

that was in fact a joke.

  211. YanksFanLV

Damon with 2 hits! the sky really is falling

  212. gayle

    pour pour pour

  213. Rocco

    YES YES YES

  214. Chicago Dave

    God, I love Jeter!!!

  215. Dustin in Pakistan

    That’s a game let’s callit a night boys

  216. River Ave Report

Derek Jeter delivers in the clutch, like always. LET’S GO YANKEES!

  217. TJ

    Yes Captain

  218. soxrule

and now it gets rained out you guys finally do something right and it all goes for not

    you guys are
    cursed.

  219. Marius

Wonderful. Now time to call the game cause of rain.

Go Yankees. These are the Yankees we know.

And as for Abreu, he had a long run to get to the ball. I don’t know if it was his fault that he missed it. He isn’t a lay out for a catch kinda guy.

  220. YanksFanLV

Finally, it’s nice to see some clutch hitting and to see the team try and fight it out.

  221. jennifer

They better start this game again!! If they don’t start again the runs don’t score??? Thats what John just said??

  222. Chicago Dave

NOW they should definitely call this game!!!

  223. jennifer

Mora needs to shut his mouth!! CRY BABY!!

  224. TJ

Haven’t seen that from our captain in a long time

  225. Rocco

I heard some F bombs from the Orioles in from the YES broadcast.

  226. Chicago Dave

Wait, that can’t be…We’re past the fifth…All the runs should count, right?!

  227. Jordan Meisner

Hey we still have that guy Jeter on our team, he’s pretty good, maybe he can provide that “energy” everyone’s been talking about.

  228. jennifer

Chicago if they call the game we lose :(

  229. Chicago Dave

WHAT?!!! Where did that BS rule come from?!

  230. jennifer

    Now i’m confused!!

PETE!!! will these runs count if the game is called??

  231. Rocco

Hmm is it true that if they call they game, they revert back to the end of the 7th? If so, that would suck.

  232. Marius

soxrule, after the 6th inning, it’s an official game and can be called short cause of the rain.
It happened to the Mets and Cardinals the other night.
If the game is called, the game is over and the Yankees win.

Obviously you aren’t too smart or know baseball. Most likely why you are here. The ones who understand baseball usually don’t troll.

  233. Jordan Meisner

If they call the game the Yanks lose because the home team needs to hit if they’re down. Otherwise it’s a six-inning 6-4 O’s win.

  234. jennifer

Well John Sterling said it, so maybe it isn’t true!

  235. Ted

No wonder why they call baseball players soft. Melvin Mora is weak, this is a sport and you’re an athlete, not some movie set.

  236. Skippy

What does it mean when the Yankees have the higher number (”8″) in their little box on the scoreboard than the Orioles have in their little box (”6″)? I have some vague, distant memories, but…

  237. Jordan Meisner

    Er, my bad, a 7-inning 6-4 win, not 6-inning.

  238. YankeeJosh

Jennifer, I believe they changed that rule. It used to revert to the previous completed inning. Orioles do need last licks since we took the lead. I believe the game is suspended and completed from this point now probably in July if it gets called.

  239. soxrule

ahhhhh wrong dude, home team has to bat in the bottom of the inning, I will let you comment stand without pointing out the irony.

soxrule, after the 6th inning, it’s an official game and can be called short cause of the rain.
It happened to the Mets and Cardinals the other night.
If the game is called, the game is over and the Yankees win.

Obviously you aren’t too smart or know baseball. Most likely why you are here. The ones who understand baseball usually don’t troll.

  240. Ava

Ok, I’m confused… under what circumstances do these runs count or not count?

  241. Chicago Dave

Never trust senile John Sterling…Or a Sox fan with s#@t for brains!

  242. YankeeJosh

Jordan, that was an old rule. I believe it has been changed.

  243. River Ave Report

    4.12
    SUSPENDED GAMES.
    (5) Weather, if a regulation game is called while an inning is in progress and before the inning is completed, and the visiting team has scored one or more runs to take the lead, and the home team has not retaken the lead

  244. Andrea

Get yankees on deck out of here! We have some questions!

  245. Marius

    Yeah, the runs count.

  246. helno51

The O’s need to bat. We cant win it at this point. They would almost definitely suspend the game and pick it back up when we play later in the year.

  247. Jordan Meisner

Marius, first of all, you’re wrong. If they call the game now, the O’s win.

Second of all, why is it necessary to tell a fellow Yankee fan that they’re dumb or that they don’t know anything about baseball? If you think someone is wrong about something, just let them know. Now you look like a complete jacka$$ because you put somebody down when they were actually right.

  248. YankeeJosh

    River Ave Report

Thank you, that’s what I thought. It used to revert back maybe 5 years or so ago. Now it’s suspended and resumed from where it is. O’s cannot win 6-4.

  249. jennifer

I think Yankeejosh is correct!! So they’d pick it up in the 8th inning 2 out 1 on.

  250. soxrule

    apology accepted Marius.

  251. TJ

There is no way we lose this game. If this stupid rule applies and we lose I will go back to the bad luck theory. It cannot be happening. The rain a stupid rule. Gosh I hope Pete can clear this up

  252. Chicago Dave

    soxrule –

Why don’t you remove your head from Curt Schilling’s fake “bloody sock.” The paint fumes are making you delirious…

  253. gayle

here is how it goes I believe please note the weather so i believe if called it is a suspended game

    SUSPENDED GAMES.
    (a) A game shall become a suspended game that must be completed at a future date if the game is terminated for any of the following reasons:
    (1) A curfew imposed by law;
    (2) A time limit permissible under league rules;
    (3) Light failure or malfunction of a mechanical field device under control of the home club. (Mechanical field device shall include automatic tarpaulin or water removal equipment);
    (4) Darkness, when a law prevents the lights from being turned on;
    (5) Weather, if a regulation game is called while an inning is in progress and before the inning is completed, and the visiting team has scored one or more runs to take the lead, and the home team has not retaken the lead; or

  254. Andrea

So wait….I’m still not really sure what’s going on. What happens if the game is called?

  255. Ava

Ok, nevermind. Just reread the other posts. Got it.

  256. Ted

The only way the O’s win 6-4 is if you’re a gambler. The only rules where it still reverts to the previous inning are Vegas rules.

  257. Redsox are Devil

Tomorrow is National Spit in Bobby Abreu’s Face Day

Bases Loaded, Yankees can’t score against Paul Shuey.. Yankees are struggling Runners in Scoring Position.. Good Job by Matsui and Arod for not coming thru Clutch

Abreu missed flyball by Millar.. I hope Yankees don’t resign him after this season. I hate that man, that piece of sh*t.

  258. RuleMan

Jordan Meisner has it right. The home team must get its last bats, even if it’s an official game, or the score reverts to the last complete inning (unless the home team is leading). Perfectly logical …. it’s why the home team bats when they’re behind in the ninth inning, but the game ends when they’re ahead.

  259. YankeeJosh

The O’s need last licks. If they had finished the bottom of the 8th, we’d win 8-6 with a called game. Since we took the lead this inning, if weather doesn’t permit continuation we can’t win, because the O’s haven’t batted, and we can’t lose, because we scored runs.

Kind of unfair in a way since we could have lost 6-5 if the game had been called while we had second and third in the top of the 8th!

  260. gayle

Ruleman i think you are wrong see previous post I made which was taken fromt he offical rules I believe it becomes a suspended game and continues at a later date rule 4.12 point 5

  261. jennifer

    Radar doesn’t look good
    http://www.weather.com/weather.....ayer=radar

  262. YankeeJosh

Ruleman, you are right, the home team must get last at bats. But the score does NOT revert. That was the rule until a few years ago, but it was amended to become a suspended game.

  263. Darrin

    The irony is rich.

Many years ago, in a situation such as this, if the game got called, the Yankees 4 runs would be swept off the board and the O’s would be given a 6-4 win. Why was this rule changed?

Well…..back in the late 70’s (I think it was 1978) the Yankees were playing in Baltimore on a rainy night. The Orioles held a 4-0 lead until the Yanks scored 5 runs in the top of the 7th inning to take a 5-4 lead. The game was then immediately called and the O’s were given a 4-0 victory. The Yankees were outraged and the rule was soon after changed.

  264. TJ

I wish Pete would come tell use something about this rule bs. I just cannot believe this is happening. Can a Yankee fan have any happiness lately?

  265. Rocco

If the game is called, it will be played from this point the next time the Yankees are in Baltimore, which isn’t a bad thing considering how the Yankees have been playing lately.

  266. Ted

I repeat: the only way the O’s win 6-4 is if you’re a gambler. The only rules where it still reverts to the previous inning are Vegas rules.

If game is called now, because the Yankees tied or took the lead it’s a suspended game.

Suspended games will be completed before the next scheduled game between the two teams at the same location under the change by baseball’s rules committee. If no games are left at that field, the game will be completed at the other team’s ballpark

  267. YankeeJosh

Thanks for the clarification Pete, just as I thought. You are the best!

  268. jennifer

    Pete replied in his updates

Just FYI, under the new rules the game would be suspended and picked up from the point it was stopped.

  269. jennifer

So once again John Sterling proves he is an idiot. He should know these rules, he broadcasts the games.

  270. faults

    tor has to be fired.
he didn’t let wang relax after 6th ining until 7th.
we know wang is not best stuff today and wang had given up many hits. it is clue to wang’s finger and body.
    it’s obviously tor’s fault.

  271. Jon

Hey Pete, you might wanna tell John Sterling about this new rule change… he kept saying that none of the runs would have counted and the Yankees would lose if they stop playing for the night.

  272. Dr. Acula

    Darrin-

if that account is true, then it’s funny how fate works. The Yanks and Sox ended with tied records in 1978, leading to one baseball’s greatest games, the Bucky Dent playoff victory.

  273. YankeeJosh

My philosophy with Sterling is just to assume the opposite of what he says.

  274. TJ

    Thanks Pete…

  275. I am Craig Biggio

And I rock just got three hits tonight the last was my 3000, so congratulate me.

  276. Dr. Acula

I don’t thing sterling knows he’s in Baltimore, let alone a baseball game.

  277. JLB

Pete is off eating a corndog.

  278. jennifer

Yeah Pete, you must be right near the 880 booth. Please tell him people don’t like to hear his doomsday broadcasts. He is also like a jackhammer when he speaks. He gets on an issue and doesn’t drop it.

  279. YanksSox

So since Marius looked like a Jacka$$ he stopped posting here, good to see

  280. Andrea

To you folks listening to Sterling–do you not get YES but you get the radio broadcast? I’m just confused. Michael Kay is annoying, but he’s not as bad as Sterling of late.

  281. Darrin

…as an update to my post above….

the Yankee-Oriole game took place on Aug 13, 1978. The score was 3-0 not 4-0, but the Yankees did score 5 in the 7th that were wiped off the board.

The reason this game sticks so strong in my memory was because at the time, the loss was devastating to the Yankees, as they were furiously chasing down Boston.

  282. TJ

Yankee Josh you make a good point

  283. JLB

Pete finished his corndog just in time to breakdown the rule change.

  284. I am Craig Biggio

Marius rub some dirt on it and come back we all make mistakes its allg ood.

  285. jennifer

Andrea i’ve been in and out of the room with the tv, so I had to listen to some of the game.

  286. TJ

Just how bad is it raining there? Does anyone know?

  287. jennifer

Craig, Pete has already gone over this, he won’t stand for people impersonating others.

  288. Dr. Acula

    Peter,

instead of doing an e-nterview with a yank, maybe you should do one with sterling and kay.

boy, the question we submit would be brutal

  289. Chicago Dave

Marius wasn’t wrong…He said the runs will count…and Pete backed him up on that already. Wake up, people!

  290. jennifer

TJ i posted a link to the radar a little bit up. Looked pretty bad, long line of showers going thru.

  291. Andrea

Ah, ok. It seemed to weird to me that you’d be able to get Sterling and not YES.

But now that I say that I realize I’m an idiot. I was up past Lake George one time and on an FM station they broadcase all the 880 Yankee games. So my question is a stupid one.

  292. Marius

    Nope, I was right.

  293. I am Craig Biggio

ahhh Marius WAS wrong he said the game stops in the rain, the Yanks win as they were ahead.
Hey where DID Marius go? Come back dude its ok we all make mistakes, get back in the game

  294. Chicago Dave

Now they realize the runs will stick all the imposters/Sox trolls have stopped posting. Classic!!! You guys are pitiful…”Bastard sons of Sam Horn” is more like it!!!

  295. Chicago Dave

    “Craig Biggio” –

You blow and the Sox blow…Now go have Curt Schilling’s love child and stop being such a little b#%@h…

  296. I am Craig Biggio

Marius said if the game is called NOW the Yanks are ahead, so the yankees win.

That is wrong, if the game is called now it is a suspended game, and the games is played from that point

    ergo marius is wrong

suck it up dude, and get real, you look silly now

    heres mariuses post

    Marius
    June 28th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

  297. Andrea

I have never ONCE gone onto a Sox blog of any kind. I don’t get it. Just pull for your team and we’ll pull for ours. Go get a hobby.

  298. Chicago Dave

Seriously, “Craig,” you’re like a petulant little child. Not making Sox fans look good right now…

  299. Leave My Yankees Alone

Sox Trolls go away. We protect our own, and we will gather our wagons around marius no matter how much of a tool he appears to be now, he is one of us, so piss off and go back to sawsh.

  300. Marius

I was right that the runs count, but wrong that they would win the game. Forgot the part that the home team has to complete the inning to get the win.

  301. TJ

Thanks Jennifer. I was just wondering how long it usually takes before they call the game when the weather is so bad. I can remember once when I saw Yanks play Rangers some years back in TExas with my dad. I think we ended up staying half the night due to rain delay. I can remember it was late when we left.

  302. Dr. Acula

    Can’t the Orioles just forfeit?

I’m sure they hate being cooped up in the clubhouse. Plus, this isn’t New York City, the gentleman’s clubs close early in Baltimore.

  303. Chicago Dave

    “Craig” -

Another thought…Your SUX have a double-digit lead, and you’re still fixated on the outcome of this game. Man, Bucky Dent really did a number on your head, didn’t he? Go out and get some fresh air…

  304. Question

I am confused though about this suspended game thing, what happens if 5 of the 9 starters were to go on the DL for either team. Then whenever they play next in Baltimore they would be playing with a player called up from the minors who wasn’t on the roster tonite. Anyone understand what I’m saying? Are the rosters flexible when they make this game up later?

  305. jennifer

They just said they are getting the field ready. But didn’t give a start time.

  306. 26 ringzzzzzzz

Chicago Dave is right. the Sux fans are fixated on everything we do. We beat the tar out of them last century all the time, why don’t you losers go away and stay off our board?

  307. Dr. Acula

Since it’s a rain delay and since Chicago Dave brought it up, you welcomed to see a really cool clip of the Bucky Dent homer — >> “here”:http://tinyurl.com/2t273p

  308. Buddy Biancalana

Peter said 20 mins form the game should be underway. I would be shocked if Ray came back out, although the O’s have nothing to lose. Let’s get Mo in to close it out.

  309. Buddy Biancalana

Sorry, Peter said the game should start up again by 11pm.

  310. Question

Whew thank god, this suspended game talk was starting to make my head spin

  311. YankeeJosh

    Question

I’ve wondered about that myself, and I think that’s why in the past MLB tried to stay away from suspended games and just had the score revert to the previous inning in these cases.

It’s like the roster changes mid-game. And if this game was resumed in July Tejeda will likely be back for the O’s. Can he pinch hit? It’s a weird situation and I really don’t know how it works. It’d be weirder if a trade happened and someone who played as a Yankee today would be an O in July at the make-up.

  312. Chicago Dave

    Dr. Acula -

Very cool clip. However, I have to say I got a much bigger thrill out of watching the Brosius homer again than watching Dent’s homer. Ah, the ‘01 Series…the wound that will never heal for us Yankee fans, right?

  313. mel

Sterling is now admitting he was wrong. Blah, blah, blah.

  314. Andrea

Chicago Dave–the wound will never heal. I don’t care which NY team was in the World Series, Arizona should have sucked it up and let the NY team win. NY went through hell in 2001 and Arizona just sat pretty in their desert.

Of course, this is all just my “damn you 2001″ mentality talking :)

  315. Bob

tarp going back on the field according to our idiot radio announcers.

  316. mel

To prove they still have fight in them, the Yankees should refuse to leave the ballpark until they finish this game.

  317. Andrea

How hard would it be to just have a little thing scrolling on the bottom of the screen on YES letting us know what’s up?

  318. Chicago Dave

    Andrea-

Yeah, I know it sounds foolish now, but that ‘01 Series meant everything at the time. I don’t think I’ll ever get over the pain of watching the D-Backs overcome Mariano in the bottom of the ninth, especially since I was surrounded by Yankee haters at the time I was watching it! Now, I’m a calm person, but I wanted to off some people after that happened!!!

  319. mel

Gameday says Jeter’s at 2nd, Sterling keeps saying that he’s at 1st. What’s the verdict guys?

  320. Andrea

Chicago Dave–I feel your painEven though it was a completely different team and a completely different group of people. I watched game 7 of the 2003 CS with a group of die hard Sox fans; when Boone hit the home run, I felt a little bit of redemption, which is completely irrational. But it made me feel good.

Just to defend myself, the Sox fans were friends who lived in a house together–there were 4 sox fans, 2 Yankee fans, and the Yankee fans were AT the game. So I was stuck watching with the Sox fans, which I really only did becaues their TV was as big as my house. I just sat quietly while I chuckled about the fact that Aaron freaking Boone got the walk-off home run.

Kind of like Flash getting the walk-off single in 2005.

  321. TJ

    Pete has Jeter at second

  322. TJ

    From Petes update

UPDATE, 10:14 p.m.: I’ve had a few people e-mail me saying the Yankees don’t show enough fight. They showed some fight there. You see Jeter slap his hands when he got to second base? Give ‘em this, they ain’t quitting.

  323. Chicago Dave

    Andrea –

OK, you’re forgiven for hob-nobbing with Sox fans!!! ;)

  324. Ain't givin up

Jeter ’s hit was a single but he advanced to second on the throw home….:)

  325. mel

    Thanks, TJ

  326. Andrea

Dave–I was in college! It was a crazy time! Plus I had the kind of roommate who always had a dude in the room and they usually wanted “quiet time,” so off I went to the land o’ sox fans. They weren’t the obnoxious kind though. One of them was Korean and barely spoke English and I have no clue how he became such a huge Sox fan, but it was him who bought the giant TV, so he’s ok by me. And I was nice about Aaron Boone. I actually had them come up to me and thank me for not rubbing it in their faces. I waited until my friends got back (yeah, I fell asleep. it’s a long drive upstate) and celebrated then.

  327. Batty

Pete – you crack me up! Got room in that Villa for some of those models Jeter is tired of?

  328. Rocco

I was drunk in Boston for the Boone HR and almost got killed.

  329. Chicago Dave

Andrea – So, where were you actually watching the game…in New York City or Boston? Where did you go to college?

  330. Andrea

I love when people wear Boone tshirts to Yankee/Sox games. Did they even MAKE those before the home run? Is that something they have to get specially made?

  331. C.C

if the game is called the yanks would win because u need to play 5 innings for a complete game but if this was the 3rd for example the game will have to be mad up on a diffrent day

  332. asburyboss

oh man…and on get-away day too…Pete- why wasn’t this game played at 1pm?

  333. Rocco

Luckily I wasn’t in a bar… I was at my girlfriends friends apartment. There were about 10 people there, all red sox fans and me, the only yankee fan. Up until the 8th inning, they were all getting up and getting me beers because they felt bad for me. I hardly remember the Boone home run but I do remember getting death threats while “walking” back to my girlfriends car. I was told that I wasnt an ass by my grilfriend which is good i guess.

  334. Rocco

    C.C You’re wrong. Read Pete’s log.

  335. asburyboss

Might Posada catch 160 games this year? Seriously this joke of a backup catcher isn’t funny anymore…the dog days are coming and Jorge is catching EVERYDAY!!!

They want Hillenbrand? great- how about we throw in Farnsworth and they give us a Molina back too (Jose)

  336. Andrea

Dave–I went to college near Albany, so I was about 3-4 hours from the Bronx, but about 20 min from the MA border. Aside from the Korean, we had a guy who grew up just outside of Boston and one from Vermont. And then there was some girl always in the house who was from California, and she just jumped on the Sox bandwagon cause she wanted to bang my friend from Boston. The 2 Yankees fans were from WestChester and Rockland. Albany is INSANE when it comes down to Yankees/Sox. There are a lot of colleges in the area, and a LOT of people from NY and from MA. I also had a lot of friends in a frat house, and that place was just plain nuts. It turned out to basically be half and half Yankee and Sox fans, with a Phillies fan thrown in for good measure. I was also unfortunately still living there for the 2004 World Series…

  337. asburyboss

Marius…when is the infield fly rule in effect?

  338. asburyboss

Pete’s compnay has a villa at St. Thomas More?

  339. Question

C.C.- I wish that was what the rules were but we have been discussing it here all nite. They would have to suspend it and make it up the next game. Coincidentally this is the final game in the series so they have to wait months for that. I know we want to see a win but think about it from the Orioles side of things, they get 21 outs but we get 23 that doesn’t seem right. If this were to happen in New York and Baltimore were scoring all thoes runs it would be a crying shame. New York definetly needs this win, so hopefully they just play the damn game!

  340. Marius

I’m in upstate NY, little outside of Albany in the Catskills, now and I was amazed at the even mix of Red Sox fans and Yankees fans up here. In the city, it’s basically a Yankees/Mets split. Up here, the Red Sox have quite a following and they aren’t even from Mass.
I thought I would be safe up here wearing NYY shirts but still get the usual Yankee insults from the Sox fans. It’s annoying.

Nothing beats when I actually lived in Boston for college and drove to Lansdown street to go out to bars, which just happened to be right up against Fenway. It was good when games weren’t being played, but on nights when there was a game I swear the fans coming out of Fenway looked like they wanted to flip my car over as soon as they saw the NY plates. Never got so many LOOKS TO KILL ever from a large group of people.

  341. Chicago Dave

    Andrea –

Ooh…You were WAY to close to enemy territory for my taste! Perhaps you should have considered your choice of school a little more carefully before you committed to be so near to the hated Sox (and so far away from our beloved Yankees!). ;)

Still, I’m no one to talk…I went to Chicago (Northwestern) for undergrad and then ended up eventually living/working here (with a quick 3-year stint back in NYC for law school in between!). Now I’m stuck watching the Cubs and the White Sox, although I spend a lot of time watching the Yanks on Gameday and participating on this blog, of course!!

Oh well, glad you survived all those perilous encounters with rabid Red Sox fans! And, hey, you, Doreen and Jennifer seem to be the only women on this blog most of the time…so I give you props for sticking in with us guys on this thing as well! Chicks who know about baseball and love the Yanks are the ultimate in cool! ;)

  342. Rocco

Friday, July 27th i assume would be the date they would finish the game. Usually they play it before the regularly scheduled game.

  343. Andrea

Marius–Do you know very many Mets fans up there? I only met one Mets fan in the 4 years I lived there. There’s actually quite a few Braves fans upstate–basically because of TBS. They don’t really make themselves known though.

Yeah, I did meet a lot of lifetime upstaters who were Sox fans. I’ll never understand that. To me, being a fan of your team was like representing your town. While all of NY is not from the city, they are still the New York Yankees.

  344. Andrea

btw, I did NOT mean to cross out half of my sentence. I had no idea what I typed would do that!

  345. Chicago Dave

Yeah, I’ve always wondered…What’s up with the crossed-out lines? How does that happen?

  346. Marius

Yeah, seriously. I only know of one Met fan and he makes the best pizza up here so he is forgiven.

  347. Alquimista

336 post…. Sorry that I could not read them. If I stole the words of any of you, it’s just an accident (or coincident, or consensus, if you like).

It’s heart-breaking watching Wang stepping down 4-6. I never thought Abreu as bad as people here have talked about, but that fly ball…. I’d rather have Bernie Williams there.

Good job having Phillips making that sac. bunt. If not for the 4-run 8th, that might become the play that killed the Yankees themselves. I can understand that A-Rod wished to swing because he’s the 4-th at bat, but….

Anyway, there are two more innings for them to screw up. Let’s see how consistent they are.

    Trade Wang tomorrow!

  348. TimH

Andrea, near Albany you are 2.25 hours from the Bronx unless you rode a bike. Near Albany is at least 40 mins from the Mass. border.

  349. Andrea

Dave–I had no idea when I chose the school I went to that it would be so close the Soxland. We were still at least 4 hours from Boston itself, so I thought I was safe. But I toughed it out, and I think it made me a better fan for it! I got tough, too, because in high school my boyfriend and his whole family were rabid Mets fans. And of course, I was in high school in 2000. Again, I was silent in my glee.

How’s this for ultimate cool–I have a partial season ticket plan. So not counting the games I gave away (cause I’m nice), I am there for pretty much every Sunday game.

I’m in grad school now at NYU, so I’m right in the thick of my people. I am thinking of going to Binghamton for my PhD, but I made sure that at least Scranton was within reasonable driving distance of there. You may see it as the ultimate of cool, but I see it as just plain sad.

Any word on possible re-start time?

  350. Dave

According to Baltimore radio game has been suspended.

  351. Chicago Dave

    Alquimista –

Come one, man…Trade Wang?! You must be out of your tree!! And having Bernie still play the outfield at this point in his career (or, I’m sorry, retirement)? You must not be familiar with the fact that his abilities were seriously eroding during his last few years as a Yank. Besides the fact, he never read the ball well off the bat or took the best routes to flyballs even when he was in his prime.

Abreu sucks, but I really don’t think Williams would be better at this point.

  352. C.C

ill think that thell try to get this game in or play tne bottom of the inning and calll it a night

Also Joba Chamberlian pitche today here is his stats for to night

IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
    5.0 5 2 2 4 10 0 3.32

  353. Andrea

Tim H–I was a bit north and a bit east of Albany–so a bit farther from the Bronx (and I’m talking 3 to 4 hours with gameday traffic, which is really all that matters!) and a bit closer to MA. Where I lived was 20 minutes from the NY/MA border, close to the Birkshires.

  354. BBFan

Irrespective of what happens with tonights game, Yanks are returning back home after a very bad road trip. Fir the first time Cashman did not support in a public interview. I think it is an omen and something MAY happen tomorrow.

On one end, there may be changes to the bullpen. Britton and/or Ramirez could be called up.

Shelly Duncan may also show up with Basek going back to minors.

On the extreme end, Torre may be pushed upstairs. I think Cashman is safe for now.

  355. Marius

    SUSPENDED!! Post game is on.

  356. TJ

    Okay well suspended

  357. Andrea

oh, and for the record. the reason it crosses out is if you have dashes surrounding your words–like this i think–

I use a lot of dashing, so I think that’s hwy it keeps happening to me.

  358. Chicago Dave

    Andrea -

“You may see it as the ultimate of cool, but I see it as just plain sad.”

OUCH!!! If that’s the case, then everyone posting on this blog every night is “sad”! :( Are you trying to imply that we all have no lives?

  359. Ava

They’re going to reconvene on July 27th according to the Baltimore guys. Alright, goodnight.

  360. mel

Great. Yankees need this win today, not in July. Oh well, at least they’re ahead and not behind.

  361. TJ

Well at least we didn’t lose tonight…but why is it so hard for us to get a win somebody doesn’t want the Yankees to win on the road I see? oh well. This is better than a lost I guess

  362. asburyboss

It’s not a loss!!!! Does this mean we are now 10.75 back?

  363. Marius

This could be kinda good. Who knows how the Yanks will look then in late July and what relievers we will have. The O’s will still be the same.

  364. Andrea

Dave–I think that came out wrong. I was meaning I’m sad because I’m basing where I will get my education on how far I am from the Yankees or some Yankee affiliate! I meant nothing bad about anyone else. My comment was purely self-depricating. I was really just trying to imply taht while the normal person desiring a PhD would base their school on the school’s quality, I base it in the school’s proximity to the Bronx.

  365. asburyboss

mel…what’s the difference bwteen w’s in July and w’s on June30th?

  366. Melissa NY

the rest of the game will be played on july 27, according to YES

  367. Andrea

When did Kay and Singleton start wearing these crazy YES polos? No more suits?

  368. Chicago Dave

    Andrea –

Awww, don’t worry about it! I was just joshing you, anyway!!! Everyone is so pissed of/frustrated on this board most of the time lately (including me!) that it’s nice to inject some light-hearted conversation and humor now-and-then…

What are you going to grad school for, by the way? If it’s an MBA, it won’t really matter where you go to school! HA!!

  369. Chicago Dave

I wish I had a crazy YES polo! That would be awesome… I’d never take it off (especially if I had it autographed by Ken Singleton first)!! ;)

  370. Chicago Dave

BTW – I miss Jim Kaat. I keep meaning to get a copy of that book he wrote. I know he rips on Mussina in there…

  371. 26 ringzzzzzzz

    –whats a dash—

  372. mel

    asburyboss,

To go home with 2 wins instead of 1, to be 2 games under .500 instead of 3, to NOT have won only 1 of their last 8 games. It’s just been a long time since they’ve won.

But, hopefully it’ll be a win on layaway. Does anyone know the rules on the resumption of the suspended games? Are pitchers and players who have left the game ineligible? Maybe Pete can ask John Sterling?

  373. Andrea

Dave–I am currently getting a degree from NYU that sounds very pompous: it’s a John W. Draper Interdisciplinary Masters Degree in Humanities and Social Thought, concentrating in Literary Cultures. That really just means English. But NYU is a bunch of money grubbing whores, so I really do not want to stay there. So I am hoping to go to Bing for my PhD in English, focusing on 20th and 21st century American literature and linguistics.
    Dave–
I agree. Most boards are frustrated. I think part of it is that we’re just spoiled. We expect the team to go to the playoffs, and a lot of people cite the payroll. Whatever. I get being pissed that Pavano gets as much money as he does to strain his butt and get TJS that he may or may not have needed. But the Igawa thing–give them a break. You have to pay someone a lot of money to relocate their life. But I’m in the minority on that kind of thing. I’ve gotten to the point where I just get excited when things go well and say “oh well” when they don’t. It’s too time consuming to try to figure out what goes wrong and what could fix it. My friend and I decided that if the Yankees become the worst team in the AL this year, we are going to be the biggeset fans of the worst team possible. We’re not fans of this team because they win all the time; we’re fans because we’re fans.

  374. Andrea

yeah, I’m not sure why I felt the need to “Dave–” you twice.

I’m sure you can get a crazy YES polo on yesnetworks.com i think they were YES HD shirts, which is even funnier.

  375. Andrea

    “win on layaway”…I like that.

  376. Rocco

probably because it was 90+ degrees in it would be brutal to wear a suit around even though they are in AC.

  377. mel

    Andrea,

    Haha, better than a “raincheck”

  378. Andrea

yeah. I thought of the weather thing after I typed it. I keep having brain farts today. I’m losing my brain a little.

  379. Rocco

    no problem Andrea, it’s late

  380. Andrea

I guess it’s better to have the weather kill a rally than a player; then we can’t blame anyone.

  381. Chicago Dave

I’m definitely checking out the YES store… And as soon as I get that polo I’m mailing it straight off to Ken Singleton to sign the inside of the collar. RULE!!!

Andrea – Oh yes, NYU is run by a bunch of usurious bastards, isn’t it? You should get out of there! (Then again, maybe I’m just jealous because I applied there for law school and they wouldn’t let me in…HA!!!)

On another note, what does anyone do with an English degree these days? I thought humanities degrees had become superfluous long ago! I should know… I was a History major!! That’s why I had to go to law school in the first place!

Anyway, good luck to you! In the meantime, we’ll all keep up the Yankee faith together… This blog will be like one big Woodstock-style love-in for Yankee fans!!! ;)

  382. YankeeJosh

So, there will I assume be different umpires for the completion of the game. If Tejeda is off the DL by then, will he be eligible? If he is and the Yanks go in with the same roster as today, that becomes unfair because the O’s would be playing with in essence 26 players for the game while we’d have 25. Or vice versa if we make a move. It’s just a very weird circumstance.

  383. Andrea

Dave–people with English degrees work ina variety of cubicles around the country. I really like researching and analyzing and making weird connections (like my undergrad thesis oh the connection between the “grail search” stories of the medieval world and the American Dream in modern literature). So my goal is to be a professor and continue researching. I want to get paid to talk about books.

If we’re being hippies, let’s paint faces!

  384. george

Wow! There has been a Cashman sighting. Michael Kay mention the blunt and stoic comments that Cashman made about Joe Torre. Did any one hear those comments?

  385. asburyboss

Can Wang finish this game now?

  386. Chicago Dave

    Andrea –

Yeah, “tune in, turn on, drop out!” You’ve just got to reach out with your mind and FEEL the interlocking NY, dude!!! Far out!

P.S. – Your line about people with English degrees working in “a variety of cubicles around the country”…that was pure comedy. Since I’m a humanities major now living a cubicle life, I’m uniquely qualified to relate!

  387. Chicago Dave

So, how many innings will Mussina go tomorrow? I bet 5 or less…

  388. Chicago Dave

What exactly did Cashman say? I’m very curious… Cashman has been Torre’s staunchest supporter all along, so if he’s now doubting Joe, then Joe’s job is in real jeopardy.

  389. gayle

to answer the elegibility issues on players on suspended games see below. Wang not eligible or any other player who was removed from the game ie Millar or Vizcaiano and all the removed Orioles pitcher. Miggy could be used but he will still be on the DL.

The lineup and batting order of both teams shall be exactly the same as the lineup and batting order at the moment of suspension, subject to the rules governing substitution. Any player may be replaced by a player who had not been in the game prior to the suspension. No player removed before the suspension may be returned to the lineup.
A player who was not with the club when the game was suspended may be used as a substitute, even if he has taken the place of a player no longer with the club who would not have been eligible because he had been removed from the lineup before the game was suspended.

  390. Chicago Dave

“A player who was not with the club when the game was suspended may be used as a substitute, even if he has taken the place of a player no longer with the club who would not have been eligible because he had been removed from the lineup before the game was suspended.”

Cool…So that means if trade for Johan Santana before July 27th he could come in to finish off the game? (I’m kidding, of course…but wouldn’t that be a sight to see?!)

  391. Stuart

good news nieves will be behind the plate Friday catching for our stud righthand strike throw Mike Mussina…

WE can’t even get a win when we are winning and there closer would not be able to come back…

do the stats count now or after the game is finished???

  392. ansky

Rocco got it right, they tend to wear the Yes polos on the, as Kay would put it, “unmanagable” hpt days. Ive def seen the old backup away crew of Kaat and Ken wear them in the last couple years.

And for the record, all of us English Grads have barely ever left or strayed far from cubicle life. There are quite a few of my peers who didnt even get the chance to use the silly diploma(s) to better the planet.

  393. Andrea

Dave–after I finished undergrad I worked for the first year and a half of grad school in a cube. Unfortunately it was a cube right near the break room, so it always smelled like burnt popcorn and fried crap. part of why I want to do the professor thing is so that I never have to go back to a cube. I hate office life. Some people are suited for it–I am NOT.

gayle–how did you find this out? it all makes perfect sense.

  394. Chicago Dave

Stuart – That’s a good question about the stats… My guess would be that they count right now, but I’d be interested to find out the answer for sure.

  395. Andrea

    I did it again. Sorry.

  396. Chicago Dave

    Andrea –

Attack of the dashes!!! Seriously, though, I admire you for taking steps to free yourself from a life in cube hell. Unfortunately, once you start getting a steady paycheck every two weeks it becomes hard to extricate yourself…at least for schmoes like me! So, hope you make it big as an English professor at some fancy college/univesity in the Northeast (Yale? Princeton? Harvard?).

  397. Andrea

The worst part of my cube life: my boss was a mets fan. Or so she claimed. She didn’t really follow the team, she just found out when the Yankees lost.

The thing that got me about her was that after the Yankees lost the DS, she said “I don’t even care if the Mets win. I am just happy that they made it past the Yankees. That is a HORRIBLE thing to say about your team. Needless to say I quite a month and a half later :)

Ok, so that wasn’t the reason. But it was part of what made me realize that my boss was crazy.

  398. Andrea

I will NOT teach at Harvard! I will be forced to fail all the little bastards that come in in their Boston hats. And then their rich parents would sue me and it’ll just be a mess!

My school for undergrad had under 1000 students. A school like that is my ideal to teach.

  399. gayle

ok since I have nothing better to do right now I went back to the rules and based on the below I assume and I am sure Peter can asnwer better than I that the stats are not submitted until the game is completed. This falls under section 10 of the offical rules and refers to the offical scorers report that has to be submitted byt the official scoreer afetr each game

The official scorer shall forward the report of any suspended game as soon as practicable after the game has been completed

  400. gayle

Andrea if you go to MLB.com they have the offial rules of baseball and you can pretty much look anything up via that

  401. Question

Yeah if anyone knows for sure about the stats it would be appreciated, not only for the fans but the fantasy owners out there. I’ve got Hideki and Markakis and wondering if their stats count for this week or if they have to wait until the game is finished in a month. Very weird circumstances all around, but hey if this were 2006, the Yanks would 36-40 at this point. A big thank you to the rules committee whoever you are

  402. Andrea

Here’s a stats question. I should know this, but I’ve never really cared. Does someone’s stats in the all-star game count? i.e., if A-Rod hits 1 home run in the all star game, and 61 during the regular season, does he break Maris’s Yankee record? Or maybe it would just be another * type situation.

  403. Andrea

gayle–I ALWAYS look up the wrong thing. I try to find what I’m looking for and find something else entirely. I’m not good at rule books. It’s written all lawyerly too. Is there anything officially in the rules that says that the players have to be men? There’s something I have to look up. There’s a pitcher for the Twins whom I’m convinced is a woman.

  404. Chicago Dave

    Andrea –

All bosses are either a) insane, b) sadists, or c) some combination of a) and b). It’s a fact! Come to think of it, I think the same can be said of Mets fans!! (Oh, I kill myself, I really do!!)

As for schools…How about Bard? That might fit the bill for you (as far as teaching at a smaller liberal arts college)…

  405. Chicago Dave

Andrea – Twins pitcher who is a woman?! What?!!! Are you talking about Boof Bonser? HA!

  406. Chicago Dave

P.S. – I’m pretty sure stats from the AS game don’t count for anything.

  407. gayle

Andrea see below from section 2 definition of terms of the official rules so according tot he rules a player can be of any sex

Any reference in these Official Baseball Rules to “he, “him or “his shall be deemed to be a reference to “she, “her or “hers, as the case may be, when the person is female.

  408. Andrea

Well, I think I’ve got to get my PhD before I can find a place to teach! Unfortunately for the Yankee fan in me, I really like Binghamton’s program. They better have YES out there!

I think you’re right. My aunt is a Mets fan. Here’s an example. I have recently found out that I get migraines due to weird crap in my head. Yay me. I was sitting in my room in the dark, and she came in asking how my head was feeling. I said you know, it’s ok, and she said “that’s because you’re a Yankees fan.” I’m sorry, I get migraines because I’m a Yankees fan? I guess this is another thing we can blame on A-Rod–my migraines.

they just plum don’t make sense.

Scott Baker, pitcher for the Twins, looks like a woman. I believe that in any photo of him, the adam’s apple has been photoshopped. But if women are allowed to play baseball, according to the rules (you’re way better than I am gayle. I’m still looking through the rules), then why would he crossdress?

An anecdote regarding female pitcher that you all might have heard/read before: In an exhibition game between the Chattanooga Lookouts and NY Yankees in April 1931, a 17-year old girl named Jackie Mitchell struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig back-to-back (before walking Tony Lazzeri and being pulled from the game). Pretty cool, huh?

Andrea – No way…I think Santana looks a lot more like a woman than Baker, actually. I mean, Santana has a woman’s build, and shave that beard off and throw a wig on him…Well, I think you’d have to agree with me, wouldn’t you?!

  412. Andrea

I was watching the game that Baker pitched against the Mets (I have to watch baseball when the Yankees aren’t on. Don’t judge me). He has curvey hips like a woman, a very “pretty” face. Santana has some pretty girly eyes, but his jaw and nose are kind of manly.

Melky Cabrera, though, had the kind of eyes girls would kill for. He looks like he has perfect eyeliner and mascara at all times.

  413. Andrea

Actually, I just found a picture of Santana’s rookie card. He is a bit feminine.

  414. Chicago Dave

Andrea – Yes, look at Santana more closely…You’ll agree with me eventually!

Santana has nice long eyelashes with Brooke Shields eyebrows. His daughters look just like him (from father’s day photo op)

Seriously, has there ever been a female player in the majors? ump?

  416. Andrea

There was a female staff member–massager type person?–for some NL team. I forget which, but Keith Hernandez in his infinite wisdom made offensive comments about how a woman doesn’t belong in the dugout.

  417. Andrea

I have GOT to stop doing that.

    Chicago Dave:
I don’t think that fly ball is difficult to catch for anybody. Even if they were far away due to the initial position and even if they think that they could not reach it, they can try to stop the ball. What Abreu did was to run slowly at the beginning and to slide at the end, and then he has to run after the bouncing ball.

BTW, I am from Taiwan, so basically all I care is whether Wang makes the final or not. I grew up watching Jays and Braves, not Yankees.

I believe All-Star Game stats do not count for anything except All-Star Game stats. If you know what I mean. They don’t get added to regular seasons stats or postseason stats or lifetime stats. I can’t find a totally specific rule on this, but it’s worth noting that at least one stat kept in the All-Star Game — the winning pitcher — follows different rules than it does in regular or postseason play (the starting pitcher can be credited with a Win even if he doesn’t last 5 innings, which he never does).

On a related topic, although I’m not positive that I’m reading this right, I think that any stats compiled in the last 1.5 innings of this suspended game (or however long it takes to finish on July 27) will be counted as having occurred tonight, even though the actual deeds will not be done until July 27. So, if ARod gets another couple RBI in the top of the 8th, he will be considered to have earned them before the All-Star break, even though they will have actually happened after it. Not that it really matters. Here’s the actual language:

“… all performances in the completion of a suspended game shall be considered as occurring on the original date of the game.”

  420. no one perfect

he has to take care of himself. especially, fingers and food that causes to be ill. ok, we’re disappointed in wang last night but don’t give up him. no one is perfect to play every game.
