Farnsworth refuses comment

Peter Abraham
June
29

I spoke to some people who were covering the game tonight. Kyle Farnsworth refused to speak to the media about his actions after being taken out of the game.

Joe Torre said it would be handled in house and said no pitcher should be upset about being replaced by Mariano Rivera.

Regardless of what you think of Torre as a manager, he was an All-Star player and has four rings as a manager. No player should show him up, least of all a guy like Farnsworth.

In recent weeks, Torre has been asked several times why he continues to trust Farnsworth in the 8th inning. He has defended him every time. This is the thanks he gets?

Taking on Torre is not a fight Farnsworth wants. Joe may be beaten up, but he’s got all the heavyweights on the team in his corner.

I’d be surprised if Farnsworth was a Yankee on July 31. There’s a reason he’s been on four teams since 2004 and we’re seeing it.

Its a shame that Farnsworthless is going to get shipped out of town before he was used in a fight

  2. Chicago Dave

We can only hope that Pete is right and “Da Farns” is shipped out of town. It would be great to see them give Ramirez a shot instead of this clown…

  3. Seth

I thought he was just upset at himself, but if he was upset at Joe, that has to be the last straw. How many chances is Joe going to give him to right himself, and that’s what he does?

    Disgraceful.

  4. EricVA

I didn’t see the game…can someone explain what he did?

  5. Whoa

I support Torre in the Farnsworth matter, but he has to stop this Cairo nonsense, otherwise, get rid of all three of them.

  6. Whoa

Farns threw has glove against the back of the dugout when Torre lifted him for Mo in the 8th.

  7. Andrew

He visibly swore and threw his glove into the dugout. Everyone notably avoided him. He did congratulate Rivera after he saved his butt, but I really hope Farns is traded. It shouldn’t have taken a temper tantrum to get him off this team, he’s been awful, but if this is the catalyst I’m all for it.

  8. mehdi

he’s ust peeved he didnt get to finish the job. yeah he messed up and let two on, but he fanned a dangerous hitter in Swisher and wasnt happy about not being able to finish the job. He has to understand with a one run lead and a man on second and all that this games means after a horrible road trip that Torre wasn’t gonna gamble anymore. If anything Farnsworth should have left with a god taste in his mouth for striking out the last batter.

  9. Marius

Maybe Farnsi wants to be traded and why he is acting out.

  10. randyhater

Big deal, he blew a little steam. That’s something we need more of, not less. The taking our daily whippings with a shrug stuff hasn’t exactly been paying dividends.

  11. Shea Hillenbrand

I AGREE MEHDI…BUT SERIOUSLY THIS GUY IS TOTAL CLASS…SAY WHAT YOU WANT ABOUT HIM BUT I SAW FARNSWORTH SIGN AUTOGRAPHS FOR KIDS FOR AN HOUR PLUS BEFORE A GAME ONCE….HE’S OK IN MY BOOK JUST UPSET HE DIDN’T FINISH WHAT HE WAS PUT IN FOR

  12. NMT

The greatest thing Farnsworth could do for the Yankees would be to act out like that. If it leads to him getting booted, I think him for his idiocy.
Has the guy ever had a 1-2-3 inning? And he’s upset about getting pulled in a 2-1 game after putting 2 guys on???!?!?!

  13. Dr. Acula

    “Shipped outta town” ??

I don’t know, I heard some teamsters say Farnsy will be a cornerstone of the new Yankee Stadium.

  14. YankeesLuv

big deal Farnsworth showed some emotion, not everyone can be comatose like Torre. He was upset with himself and even if he was mad at Torre for being taken out so what, you want someone to be happy for that? People make the biggest deal out of nothing.

  15. Jim Johnson

Does anyone have a screenshot of Farnsworth sitting in one half of the dugout and everyone else on the team in the other half? I saw it on sportscenter, but I went back on mlb.tv and couldn’t find it.

  16. Greg C.

Everybody knows Farnsworth was going to blow that game. He doesn’t help this team and he needs to be traded as soon as possible. Cashman can spin the idea that a change of scenery will help him to whomever wants to take on this bum.

The Yankees could help their bullpen by calling up Edwar Ramirez from Scranton. He pitched three innings, struck out six, and gave up no hits. His ERA is 0.68 and he’s struck out 47 in 26.2 IP.

  17. Drex

Did Farnz steal a donut from you? Not defending him or his play but you’ve been on this guy since spring training.

  18. Dr. Acula

Paul Lo Duca says, “Krasy Karl has to start talking.
    He speaks English, believe me.

  19. Ben

You could easily say he was just mad at himself, and that might be the way that he and the Yankees spin this, but he was shaking his head “no” coming off the mound, which seemed to indicate he disagreed with Joe’s move, as opposed to just being upset with himself.

  20. Captain541

He is an absolute disgrace in every way. I thought he was mad at himself for never ever getting anyone out. It just shows how bad the bullpen is that Torre still pitches him in the 8th inning. You would think he could manage a 1,2,3 inning once in awhile especially against the A’s pathetic offense. So what was Torre supposed to do leave him out there and let him absolutely implode? So he was supposed to take him out after the 3 run homer. When are Ramirez and Britton going to get there chance? What is the worst thing that happens you send them back down…? Myers pitched himself off this team months ago. There might be some options in the minors but Cashman has so far refused to give them a chance.

  21. Stuart

the reason for being on” Farnz” is he SUCKS..

He stinks and is an idiot. He also cannot pitch 2 innings or back to back games…

I only wish he was gone June 30th, please god… BYE BYE BYE BYE..He is my least favorite player, especially with all that talent wasted because he has nothing between the ears ot in his heart….

  22. Stef

    Jim Johnson,

They show the scene twice (players sitting far away from Farnsworth) on MLB.com while Mo is pitching to the following guy. I just saw it.

  23. Just Kickin' It

    greg:
i’ve been paying attention to that Ramirez kid since he was promoted to SWB earlier this season – his double aa numbers were quite impressive also – WOW – where did he come from so fast?? ..definitely gives us hope for the future.

    acula:
”I don’t know, I heard some teamsters say Farnsy will be a cornerstone of the new Yankee Stadium.” what voices are YOU listening to?? CORNERSTONE??… am so hoping that was sarcasm, or a ‘teamsters’ idea of a joke.

    emobacca:
i was actually excited about farnsworth when we first got him just for his fighting!! i always remembered that ‘Goldberg Spear’ job he pulled while with the Cubs – probably one of the baddest moves by a pitcher i have ever seen…. even better than the year Ventura got his A*# kicked by a 40+ Nolan Ryan!!

    mehdi:
”Farnsworth should have left with a god taste in his mouth for striking out the last batter”

i can’t believe they’ve gotten to you too.
This BULLS$#T about these players psyche has got to stop already. This is DEFINITELY a modernized way of thinking that this game can do without. These are grown men – not the wnba!! (although, most of them are grown men as well)

    heh heh heh

  24. Mick

They get paid alot of money and maybe respect is not something they know or have to worry about,

  25. Jim Johnson

    Stef,

huh… I didn’t see it. This was the following batter, correct? I saw a few scenes of him sitting there but he was the only one in the shot. I’m talking about a long shot that showed the entire dugout and everone piled up on one side and him on the other.

I’m going to have to take another look.

  26. Roger

Farnsworth is losing his composure, really looked bad after his removal. However,he will be back on the mound soon, while I think Andy Phillips will be banished to the bench. When he didn’t catch the hot liner,he was replaced the next inning by Cairo for defense.Last year,Phillips was the defensive first baseman.I like Phillips, and wish he would get a legitimate
chance to play 1b.Unfortunately,Torre does not seem to like him or Cairo has some photos of Joe because after being buried the first half of the year, suddenly Cairo is the regular first baseman. The next time we see Andy might be on a milk carton.

  27. Stef

    Jim Johnson,

No, there’s definitely two shots where you can see the others. In the second one, I remember seeing Jorge standing up near the coaches. I pay for MLB.com (I live abroad), so you’ll only see if it you can get access to the whole game. And yes, it’s the batter immediately following Farnsworth’s dismissal. I believe Mo strikes him out.

  28. Stef

It looked like Farnsworth was muttering, “FU Torre” as he was walking off the mound, but maybe that’s just my imagination. Shaking his head was him definitely showing up his manager, though, and that’s so not cool. Does he really think he’s earned anybody’s trust out there?

  29. Tseng

    Just Kickin It-

I could be wrong, but I don’t think you quite caught Acula’s meaning behind his statement.

  30. Ryan CT

After he was taken out he was shaking his head and it was obvious he said “f**king joke” as he was walking off.

  31. CB

Down in Scranton tonight Edwar Ramirez threw 3 more perfect innings of relief and struck out 6 in the process. Struck out 6 walked none.

His K’s/ 9 innings ratio is 16.6. That’s not a typo – we have a relief pitcher in Scranton striking out 17 per 9 and in the majors we inexplicably have Farnsworth throwing a hissy fit because he can’t get the job done.

  32. gianthinker

We can send Farnsworth for Hillenbrand but if we do I’d hope we’d get more for him. Maybe Figgins or something. But I’d rather trade him wiht something for Gagne.

  33. leo

its obvious pete has some kind of personal bone to pick with farnsworth.

  34. Captain541

I read an article the other day and the minor league pitching coach Contreras(I believe) said that Ramirez will not be promoted until he has better command of his fastball. He said his other pitches are great but he has to get better with that pitch. In 40 innings he has 17 walks, but he has only given up 3 runs all season!!! He cant be worse then Farnsworthless at this point, and Bruney walks everyone also. They should bring him up before the trading deadline so Cashman knows if he can help them and if not what the team needs, besides 1st base.

  35. Just Kickin' It

    Ed Ramirez:
ELEVEN Strikeouts in his last FIVE innings of work.
    ONE HIT!

  36. tommy

Yeah, I just don’t get the Ramirez thing (or for that matter Britton). I’m sick and tired of the team complaining about a shaky bullpen or no setup man to trust when there are clearly better options in the organization.

    DFA/Trade: Kyle, Villone, and Myers.

    Callup: Britton, Ramirez and Henn.

    Its a no brainer.

  37. Joe L

I don’t want to overreact to what we saw tonight. I think the frustration might be more with himself and less with Torre, but only the team really knows.

We all loved O’Neil for showing his frustration with himself and if that was what Farnsworth was doing tonight, I give the guy a pass.

Was it last season when in Boston he struck Manny out with guys on base in a huge situation?

He has the ability, he’s just not performing like many others on this team right now.

I wouldn’t be against trading him, but to run him out of town and get pennies on the dollar makes no sense to me since normally a guy who throws 98 and has closed in the past is worth a lot on the open market. Not to mention we’ll kick in some dough.

Hopefully, the team addresses it internally and things calm down. I hate trading players when their true value is compromised because of reaction to an incident. He didn’t punch Torre or spit on him. He threw his glove in the dugout after putting 2 guys on the in the 8th.

If he really was insulted for being lifted, he’s an ass…but none of us know that for sure yet.

  38. Art Vandelay

Just b/c you sign autographs for kids does not make you a stand up, classy guy. That makes you willing to gain the favor of the fans.
What makes you a stand up, classy guys is your actions in the face of adversity. Tonight Kyle showed everybody what kind of a person he really is.
A lot of people don’t agree with Torre, take Sheffield for example. Say what you want, but I never saw him b*tch in the dugout over Torre using him at 1B or anything else.

  39. KH.Taiwan

Compared to Wang’s cases in which he felt angry to himself, Farnsworth should learn how to control his flame-like emotions to be a reliable setupman. Behaviors like that make him miserable and it won’t do any good to the team, especially in this terrible losing streak when everybody is losing confidence. Be patient please, Farnsy.

  40. Just Kickin' It

If we do start selling some of our overpriced, overrated ballplayers, i just hope we get some young position players in return. Posada is having a career year thus far (figures, in a walk year!), but he only has about two years, maybe three years left at this level – TOPS! We desperately need a young catcher for the future …

would also like to see a little more versatility out of our second baseman. I’m so tired of watching cano and his cocky ways all night long.. i would most definitely trade him for the right return… not saying we could get any of them, but i like the new mold of second baseman that’s out today – spunky as all hell – the likes of uggla, utley, and freddie sanchez. Cano’s too busy strutting or practicing that eyebrow lift thing that he does all the time.

a young first baseman is something i’d like to finally solidify real soon. It’s become the Yankees Florida to New York – a landing place for all the ‘old guys’!.. no more!

…give me at least one solid outfielder with speed, that’s not afraid to chase balls within 100 feet of the wall and that can throw, and i’m happy!

..and ya know .. looking through the farms these days is actually pretty exciting. The pitching we have down there – and i mean all the way down to single a ball – is extremely impressive. We could very possibly possess the most envied rotation in baseball when we kick off the new stadium in 2009.

A new ERA is coming boys & girls… we’re just going through the type of season that allows a fan to declare themselves a fan!

  45. Eddie

    A good win.

  46. Stef

Cano is definitely enamored with himself and lovin’ the nightlife his MLB status gives him. I wouldn’t mind trading him while his stock is still fairly high…

  47. E-ROC

Farns needs to stop. He got lifted in favor of a future Hall of Famer. I can see if Torre brought in Bruney or somebody other than Rivera, then u should be mad. He needs to think before reacting. Maybe if he could give us a 1-2-3 inning consistently or if ever, then he would have finished the inning. Trade him for Michael Bourn of the Phillies. World class speed in the Outfield and isn’t afraid of the wall like clown in right field. Promote Edwar Ramirez, Chris Britton, or Sean Henn. Great win against quality team is always nice.

  48. Dr. Acula

Cut Cano a break. There’s a lotta moving parts in this machine, and with the dials pointng down on abreu, zilla, damon, and giambi, other parts are expected to be affected.

Nobody cared last year whether he was carousing And this year nobody cares about ARod’s carousing.

Besides, you don’t sell a stock when its going through a chain reacted correction, you sell when it’s high.

  49. RJPinstripes

I wouldn’t release Fonzy, but I would definitely look to trade him (to the National League) before the deadline. Yes, he showed some “fire” last night but it was bush and (of all people) toward Torre who has backed Fonzy time and again even as he has imploded time and again. Has he ever had a 1-2-3 inning?

  50. D

The only way to unload Farnsworth is a my-problem-for-your-problem type deal…think Contreras for Loiaza…below average, righty reliever in his 30’s who’s on the books for $6 mil next year…not so attractive.

And the DFA route isn’t really an option since there’s little chance of him getting claimed ($$$) and I doubt the Yanks are going to want to pay the remaining $9 million just to make him go away. Maybe some team gets really desperate during the last week of July and takes a shot on him at the deadline, but I’m not holding my breath…I think we’re stuck with this piece of garbage.

  51. Rick

The Yankees have a real jewel at Trenton with Brett Gardner. He was hurt earlier in the season but now is healthy and hitting near .300. No power but can steal bases with the best of them. He is one of the fastest people in baseball. Another year of seasoning and the Yankees will have an everyday centerfielder who will be a fixture for years.

  52. EricNS

Is this the last season the Yanksare stuck with this creature – even so get RID of him!!!!!!!!!

  53. Rick

See Tabata is hitting over .300 at Tampa. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the bigs by the end of 2008. The Yankess will be a knock dead team by 2009. If they hang on to these young players, Gardner, Tabata, Hughes, Chamberlain, Whelan, Sanchez, and Clippard. Then a free agent or two and they have a team for many years.

  54. RJPinstripes

Oh, we will probably (ugh) have to pay some of Fonz’s money to make the deal, but teams will need a closer and we can dump him for a propect or two!

  55. Drive 4-5

Brian Cashman shoud be ashamed of himself for ever putting Car; Farsnworth or Kei Igawa in pinstripes

  56. DC Yank

What a non-story this is. You guys want this team to show some emotion, well you got it. Farns has pitched badly this year, but he’s a competitor and wanted to finish his job. It was in the heat of the battle. He wanted to help the team get the win. I like his emotion, now if he pitched a little better. Great AB with Swisher though.

He showed up Torre? Maybe he did. He’s not the first to do it. It happens. Can we focus on the ‘W’?

  57. Lil' Jimmy Norden

If he was blowing guys away and consistently putting up great numbers that would be one thing. But his mediocre performance makes his in your face personality less tolerable. He should be dealt, imho.

  58. Jim Clark

“If I was Yankee GM, I never would have signed Jaret Wright to a $21 million dollar contract or Kyle Farnsworth to a $16 million contract.” Chris Russo, WFAN. Which shows us even an idiot is smarter than the people running the Yankees.

  59. Yikes

I’d be surprised if Farnsworth was NOT a Yankee on August 1st.

He makes a lot of money for an ineffective head case and I don’t see teams pounding on Cashman’s door to get him.

The only way Farnsworth is dealt is if the Yanks agree to pay the majority of the $8.5M left on his deal ($3M for the rest of ‘07 and $5.5M for ‘08).

Outside of Cashman simply cutting his losses and moving on, this team is stuck with him because every other GM knows he’s been terrible all season just as much as Yankee fans do.

  60. Skinnyhead

Raul Mondesi just called Farnsworth and offered to pack his bags for him.

  61. Doreen

Although it would have been nice to have more offense, I thought last night’s game was great! It was a much-needed win in a one-run game. They made the 2 runs scored in the first stand up through the entire 9 innings. How often has that happened? I’ve felt that if they can win a couple of close ones, maybe even back-to-back-to-back, that would mean a lot more and go a lot further, confidence building-wise, than to win blow-out games.

As far as Kyle Farnsworth is concerned, well, it doesn’t really bother me so much that he doesn’t get 1-2-3 innings. Lots of times Mo doesn’t anymore, either. But I guess the difference is with Kyle, you don’t get the feeling that he’s going to get out of it every time. Temper tantrums are never good, and I never really understood why people think this was a good thing about Paul O’Neill. If O’Neill didn’t succeed so much as a Yankee, I don’t think everyone would be so enamored of his tantrums. Same with Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson. If they weren’t winning, they would have been looked at very differently, IMO. So, because Kyle’s been mediocre, his tantrums are not tolerated. You can’t deny it shows passion and maybe a bit of pride, things that have been clamored for around this blog and elsewhere. Now, if he can convert that passion and pride, channel that energy, into better and more consistent relief appearances, that would be great. Let’s see what happens with that.

I read this morning in the Star Ledger that the Yankees have only a “slight interest” in Shea Hillenbrand and will only get him if he “falls in their laps.” They don’t want to have to give anything up to get him and are willing to give Phillips his shot first. Plus, Mientkiewicz may be back in the beginning of August, and if you’ve got Hillenbrand, too, then what do you do? You’ve got players fighting for a position in August. Not a good thing, I think.

Anyone hear John Sterling’s rant about stat-guys on the radio after Jeter’s spin-in-the-air play? I may agree with his sentiment, but not the way he really insulted the sabermetricists. (New word???)

Off-topic — had to go to our local mall in Freehold, NJ, last night and the line for the I-Phone was incredible! I was told it was there from early in the morning. As customers left the store, they were actually applauded by the employees. What a circus! But people seemed like they were enjoying the whole event.

    JayCint

“Sign me up. I’ll trade any of Weathers, Conine, Hatte, Lohse, etc. to get a good arm like that in the system. Heck on a generous day I’d give two of the above for an arm like that. Lol….. Reds Fans are dreaming….Horne and Chambelain are off limits. No Thanks..

  63. yankee21

I like to see the emotion from Fworth. Too bad more Yankees don’t show they have a heart, even if in Fworth case it comes across as awkward and stupid and gets hyped up by the media. Most Yankees have dispositions like their manager, comatose, they don’t argue over bad calls, they don’t throw their helmet in disgust when they fail in the clutch, they don’t sense an urgency or feel any pride they just play cool, and gentlemanly, and oh they the are so nice but they lose. They are the coolest, nicest team to play .500 baseball in sometime. Quite an accomplishment. Better to rag on the players with fire. We don’t want that.

BY the way, people getting on Fworth because he can only pitch every other day. Whose fault is that?? If he can’t perform as needed, then the team needs to DL him. Not Fworth call but Cman and Torre. Same example as Damon all season and Giambi before he finally got DL. That is a team call not a players call. The Yankees management are cowards.

I agreed with Fworth, why was he taken out after he dominated Swisher?? What was Torre’s strategy for this inning, if he were going to replace Fworth, why didn’the do it before Swisher instead of after? Odd, very odd. I know Fworth blows it but give the man a chance to finish the job.

Also, why the hell did Cairo replace Phillips at 1B for defense in the 7th inning, is Cairo better defensively than Phillips at 1B? Is he a guy who can drive in runs, is he a guy who can hit in the clutch. Can the Yankees afford to burn players off their bench to substitute for no reason?
Now Phillips is no star, in fact I don’t even think he’s big league, but he does have some power and can play D. In it was another odd move, totally unnecessary. By the way Cairo came up in the bottom of the 8th and failed again with runners on by popping to the CF, with 2 runners on. And it shows once again in the simple things that Torre is out there, and his bench coaches, what are they thinking, what are they advising??

The Yankees managed to win the game last night despite Torre. Good job.

Just read a nice article by Jack Curry in today’s New York Times about Derek Jeter and his role as captain. It may answer some questions people have about whether Jeter has taken charge in a more vocal way.

  65. Doreen

I found the Times article online for anyone interested:

    “Jeter Article”:http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/30/sports/baseball/30pins.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

  66. yankee21

I don’t know what Jeter says to his teamates in the clubhouse and really don’t care. He has always led by example on the field and what better way to lead? He has his flaws like all ballplayers but he is absolutely the guy you want on your team when the chips are down. He personifies yankee pride.

  67. jb

Bergen Record- Bob Klapisch on Robinson Cano:

    [quote]
    http://www.northjersey.com/pag.....FlZUVFeXk2

Without the numbers to back him up, Cano’s cool becomes transparent; his flaws are more obvious today than a year ago. He doesn’t run particularly well. He doesn’t get on base enough. He doesn’t swing at enough strikes.

The Yankees, however, insist they have no problem with Cano’s future or his intensity level. Cashman says: “I know for a fact that kid cares about us winning and losing and the way he’s playing. If anything, he cares too much. He’s trying too hard.”

The numbers seem to bear out that sentiment, as he sees only 3.37 pitches per plate appearance, the fewest among the Yankees. The majority of Cano’s at-bats are over in just one or two pitches. Call it anxiety or pressure — or fear of striking out — but Cano hacks at the first good pitch he sees, a philosophy that runs counter to the Yankees’ system-wide indoctrination.

Why, exactly, does Cano become so anxious? The second baseman shook his head and said: “Because I’m trying to make things happen all at once. I know it’s a bad thing. I know I have to be more patient. I’m trying.”

Doreen, thanks for bringing the Jeter article to our attention. NY is a tough place swarming with media 24/7 and the public thinks it knows everything that’s going on because of that. Obviously, there are still people who value privacy and don’t need to have their name in the headlines for negative actions, like Farnsworth, but would prefer to act in a professional way. I would never doubt Derek Jeter’s sincerity or his will to win – he’s the consummate baseball player. Let’s hope that the other Yankees keep hearing his message and start playing up to their potential too.

Regarding Fransworth, many are saying that he should not be upset about being lifted for Maraiano. I sincerely believe that no one in tha bullpen, including Fransworth, gets upset if Mo is coming to replace him. Fransworth was not upset for that reason.

He is either upset at himself or at Torre. It is more likely that he is upset at Torre, for not giving him the opportunity to finish the Job. Yesterday was a difficult situation for Torre to let him continue as he could not afford to tie the game on a single or lose it on a double.

If he is upset at Torre, you could see it coming from any one from the bullpen, not named Mo. Just like many here are upset with Torre’s bullpen moves, these players are upset too, more so. Except that they do not speak up because of potential consequences. We, the arm chair pundits can say any thing we want without any consequences! Did you notice the facial expressions of Vizcaino when was getting lifted during his bad streatch? He was not stupid enough to say some thing or show Toree up. Kyle did that because either he is stupid or he thinks he had enough of Torre. Remember he was lifted like this many times before and he did not do any thing like this.

It is interesting to see how it goes from here. They can not trade him now as they get nothing back. As much as many want to dump him here, that is not how it works in the practical world. See what happened with Vizcaino when he was going bad.

Most likely they will give him a stern warning and not use him for a while or use him only in games out of hand either way.

I’d really love to get a guy like Figgins who is as fast as the wind and can play 2B, SS, 3B, LF, CF, RF. He’s not the best player by any means but he’d be a monster off the bench for us.

You need to get rid of Farnsworth as fast as you can. While your at it, get rid of Scott Procter as well. These two idiots do not know how to pitch.
