The Yankees win! Well, almost

Peter Abraham

John Sterling must have been confused. Yankees don’t lose!

Here’s the deal: The game gets picked up on July 27 before the scheduled game between the teams at Camden Yards.

The O’s will be without Melvin Mora, who was ejected after Derek Jeter’s hit. I’m unclear on how the rosters will work.

That’s for another day. For now I have a long drive ahead of me and the weekend off after this hideous road trip.

  1. Chris NY

I’m confused… why is it suspended instead of called? Because it was in the middle of an inning?

  2. Seth

    Pete,

Does this game start at 7, or will they start this one at 6pm so the regular game can get underway on time?

  3. Seth

Because the away team had scored in the top of the inning to take the lead and the home team did not have the chance to respond.

They changed the rule this year, if this happened last year, it would have reverted back to the end of the 7th inning and we would have lost.

  4. TJ

Pete thanks for explaining that to us and drive safe on your trip back home.

  5. Stuart

read the NY TImes, looks like no big moves……..

thank you god…. Marginal moves or god forbid call up some young guys and see what happens….

there is no selling of young studs, that is a good move for the long term.. WHy is Hughes so far from returning if he started throwing off the mound??

  6. Andrew

Hughes is so far from returning because he has yet to even pitch off a full mound.

Then he has to pitch rehab games, probably one in each minor league system until he’s strong enough to get to 100 pitches. Think about 4 starts. Only then will he actually be major league ready.

  7. mel

Does anyone know why the All-Star game is being played in NL parks 2 years in a row? If WS home field advantage is being determined here, wouldn’t it be fair to alternate as far as home team & use of DH? Thanks in advance.

  8. TigersFan

    Mel –

I suspect it has something to do with the NL having 16 teams and the AL only 14.

The same thing happened in 1950 (Chicago Comiskey) and 1951 (Detroit Briggs) – of course, must have been a different reason then.

  9. Whoa

The Yankees will have a new manager by then.

  10. Squid

OK, folks, here’s what I found on mlb.com in the rules section. It seems to say that if the rosters change, the new guys can play. In fact, they can play even if they have replaced guys who were substituted for before the suspension.

In other words, if we trade, say, Wang (ha ha) for a reliever, that new reliever can pitch, even though he took a roster spot vacated by a player who had already left the game.

    Here’s the exact language:

“A player who was not with the club when the game was suspended may be used as a substitute, even if he has taken the place of a player no longer with the club who would not have been eligible because he had been removed from the lineup before the game was suspended.”

  11. joejoejoe

mel – I think the All-Star schedule was altered so they could play the game in Yankee Stadium in ‘08 as a kind of tribute to the old (existing) stadium. The Yanks move across the street in ‘09 to The House That Bloomberg Built.

  12. MattNC

As stated above, MLB wanted to put the All-Star game in Yankee stadium in ‘08, which should have been an NL park year. However, this is not the only reason NL teams are hosting back-to-back. The NL will also host the 2009 game, giving it 3 sites in 4 seasons.

The reason is that MLB wants to get all the newer parks an All-Star game as soon as possible. There has been a recent boom in building new NL parks. The following teams in the NL have new parks that haven’t hosted an All-Star game yet:

-SF Giants AT&T (this year’s host)
    -Phillies (Citizens Bank Park)
    -Cincinnati Reds (Great American Ballpark)
-St. Louis Cardinal (New Busch Stadium) hosting 2009 game
    -S.D. Padres (Petco Park)
    -Arizona Diamondbacks (Banc One Ballpark)

The Marlins haven’t hosted an All-Star game, but MLB doesn’t like their football stadium, nor their lousy fan support. They probably won’t host an All-Star game unless they build a new stadium.

In the AL, in which the stadium building boom occurred sooner, the only new park that hasn’t hosted an All-Star game is the hideous Tropicana Field, where the D-Rays play.

  13. Bob Timmermann

The rule about suspending games when the visitors take the lead has been on the books since 1979. The rule change this year for suspended games was about games that were tied.

  14. Marius

Somewhat off topic, but Cashman has been talking to the Angels about Hillenbrand a few days before he was told he was going to be DFA’d.
It may even happen tomorrow. Tomorrow Shea Hillenbrand may be a Yankee.

Add this to the list of lousy moves by Cashman which far outweight the good. Cairo is better than Hillenbrand.

  15. Grace

    Peter:

I have a question is that when Wang with that low pitch count into 7th, all of sudden, he lost his command,is there anything physical wrong…

Reading the news on internet, according to himself, he said is inconsistence of the arm slot or something like that cause the 7th inning trouble, nothing to do with the fingernail/blister or else, and he thanked the teammates picked him up…

  16. Grace

oh I forgot actually I was suprised when I saw that low pitch count in the 7th, he had some pitches up during the game, but maybe the double plays saved him…..

  17. kasey

so, if tejada’s off the DL by july 27, does he get to play in the game?

  18. pyropos

I’m wondering, what’s happened to Wang’s physical condition. I’ve heard that he’s having a allergic attack with skin rash on the trunk.

  19. Bob NJ

Odds are Tejada won’t be ready by then

  20. saucy

So the big question is, do I get Andy Phillip’s fantasy home run points today or do I have to wait until July 27th?

  21. Alquimista

Trade Wang now and the Yankees might have a chance. Wang can collect for you, I guess, 7 to 10 more wins in this season at most. But if he’s traded, maybe the batting line up will be much better, which may get you 10 to 20 more wins. Or you may get a(some) much better reliever(s) that can save you 15 to 25 more disastrous loses.

What’s more important to me is that Wang may also have a better chance to make it to the playoff.

Count it before you jump into flaming me.

  22. chris in fairfield

wang is the best pitcher this club has had in a few years . you are straight-up dumb for even mentioning this ridiculous trade . trade wang , what a dope .

  23. jw

are you retarded or what alquimista?

  24. saucy

let it be known that Alquimista is a Wang fan, not a Yankee fan. guess that’s okay. but i really don’t see the yanks trading him to a contender at anytime soon.

  25. Sam

Alquimista’s idea isn’t that crazy — buy low and sell high, and Wang is definitely high. Just make sure you get enough offense to make up for that huge hole you’re creating in the rotation.

  26. Other Pete

Doesn’t Hillenbrand have something of a reputation for being clubhouse poison?

  27. Alquimista

I really don’t want to offend the Yankees’ fans. Why? Because you all seem to love Wang, which I appreciate a lot as his countryman.

I like Jeter a lot even before I became a Wang/Yankees fan. I like him even better now because he had a lot of kind words towards Wang as a captain, ever since Wang was just up there in the big league and was still closely observed. I like the Yankees as a whole because all of them seem to be very nice to Wang. If you have the time, checkout my post (bilingual) in my blog in May, which talked about how I appreciate the support to Wang from his teammates.
    http://dick-alquimista.blogspo.....ay-10.html

But through these few days, I saw a lot of discussions. Trading this, trading that, move ahead, set the goal at 2009, 2012, or 2050 I don’t know. Wang is a pitcher, not a fielder. It is very hard to ask him to wait until the team be successfully rebuilt in many years. There are a lot of baseball fans in Taiwan, but unfortunately, we do not have many players in MLB by far, compared to countries like Dominica, Venezuela, Panama, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, and so on. Wang is our pride, and our hope. We wish him to catch a ring as early as he can.

Not so many Taiwanese people posted here, but if you happen to see one, he/she will definitely be wishing that the Yankees make it to the playoffs. But there must be a bottom line for each. Maybe someone will only give up the idea when Sep. 30 comes. Maybe someone gives up earlier. Please understand.

Actually, although the Yankees are in a hole (what a big one…) at the moment, if you look at the stats of each player, you do not see very clearly where that hole is. Because of the relievers? They blew away games, but they rarely blew it away big. Because of the starters? The rotation is almost scary now. Even Mussina and Clemens, who have the worst winning percentages, have reasonable numbers in other items. Because of the poor batting lineup? Yeah, they have poor BA w/ RISP, but otherwise they are not bad. If you compare it with the lineup of any other team, you will think that: if this lineup is not gonna work, then which other lineup will guarantee to work?

Trading is not the real solution for the Yankees at the moment. Even if you sell the whole team and get the World Champion team last year in return, what will you get? A 34-41 team, 2 games behind the Yankees now. What the Yankees need at this moment is something to wake everybody up. There should be more chemistry than statistics or world trade homeworks to be carried out.

  28. Squid

Yes, Tejada could play in the suspended game. So could I, for that matter, if I made one of the team’s 25-man rosters.

  29. 2007 Yankees

Pete, this whole road trip disaster was your fault. You followed the team around and put a voodoo curse on them. I suggest you take the weekend off and think about what you did….lol

    Enjoy the weekend!
