It’s supposed to be relief pitching

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 02, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Check out some of these numbers for the relief pitchers:

Mike Myers: Right-handed hitters are 10 of 59 (.169) against him with four walks. Left-handed hitters are 17 of 53 (.321) with eight walks. Makes no sense whatsoever.

Scott Proctor: Sparky has not struck out any of the last 32 batters he has faced. He has allowed 10 hits and three walks in his last 5.2 innings.

Brian Bruney: Has put 27 batters on via walk or HBP in 34 innings.

Luis Vizcaino: 24 earned runs in 39 innings.

Kyle Farnsworth: Where do you start? Opponents are hitting .281 against him and he has only 21 K in 31.1 innings. 16 walks (1 intentional). Three 1-2-3 innings in 34 appearances, which is shocking.

So Roger better go eight tonight. Either that or we get a look at Edwar Ramirez.

Back in a bit with the lineup.

At this point, nothing short of a miracle will save this season… but good luck to them all.

  2. Paul July 2nd, 2007 at 3:42 pm

You call that a bullpen? Tiffany called it a blowpen…hehehe…staggering…ahhh, I can only hope that this current run of shoddy play will pass…..may be it’s time for all the pitchers to slug it out with all the batters…hehe….a little more controversy, please…

  3. Ryan July 2nd, 2007 at 3:53 pm

We’ll be lucky if Roger gives up fewer than eight.

  4. Drive 4-5 July 2nd, 2007 at 3:53 pm

No one is going to offer the Yankees any help unless the Yanks are willing to give up more than market value.

I thought Joel Sherman’s article in today’s Post was ridiculous. He listed the Yankees’ needs and suggests trading A Rod to fill some of them. Sherman never adressed the question of who will play 3rd or replace A Rod’s numbers if they traded him.

  5. Mike July 2nd, 2007 at 3:57 pm

Sherman says the yankees should trade arod for prospects than they will have the same chance to resign him as any other team. And he’s right.

  6. JFud25 July 2nd, 2007 at 3:58 pm

To bad Humberto Sanchez and J. Brent Cox are out for the year. They couldn’t have been any worse than the current bullpen.

  7. Drive 4-5 July 2nd, 2007 at 4:01 pm

    Mike,

I doubt A Rod would agree to a trade unless he was ready to leave for good. Given the terrific “prospects” the Yanks have to show for Gary Sheffield and Randy Johnson,I wouldn’t risk it.

  8. Doreen July 2nd, 2007 at 4:01 pm

Wouldn’t MLB have something to say if a team trades a player who is going to be a FA, or one who can opt-out, for prospects and then re-sign that same player in the off-season? It seems to me it would just be asking for trouble. Does anyone know if that’s something MLB would frown upon?

  9. Jerkface July 2nd, 2007 at 4:03 pm

WE SHOULD GET A LOOK AT EDWAR REGARDLESS.

Joe Torre using proctor over Edwar in a blowout last night was horrendous and points once again to his failure at bullpen management.

Proctor should have added Torre to the list of things he set on fire.

There are better times ahead…..just not sure if it’s in 2007 or 2008.

Over the AS break, I’m sure there will be a lot of roster moves made. New half and new blood needs to be injected into that clubhouse. We also need a personal visit from George

  11. Doreen July 2nd, 2007 at 4:04 pm

    Pete,

Or maybe the Yankees go on a slugfest and we get to see Ramirez anyway. That would be fun.

  12. SJ44 July 2nd, 2007 at 4:05 pm

    Doreen,

No, MLB can’t do anything about it.

However, the opt out clause, along with Arod not wanting to leave NY, are why Arod trade talk is worthless, IMO.

In reading Sherman’s column today, the sense I get is, the only reason why he wrote was to give Yankee fans something to be ticked off at Arod about should he not agree to a trade.

When the guy is quoted as late as yesterday saying, “100% no”, I don’t know what the point of the column is.

Also, let’s say he does agree to a trade. Who would give up their best propsects/players for a guy they can’t re-sign next year?

    That’s how GM’s get fired.

  13. Drive 4-5 July 2nd, 2007 at 4:06 pm

There’s no bad luck involved with Humberto Sanchez’s injury. Cashman knew he was damaged goods are took him anyways.

Personally, I have zero confidence in Cashman’s ability to evaluate pitching (see Kei Igawa). He did well last year finding Brian Bruney, but if that’s his claim to fame, I rest my case.

  14. RJPinstripes July 2nd, 2007 at 4:06 pm

OK what is it with our pen-pitchers…LOUSY COACHING OR LOUSY PITCHERS. We have (1) ceremonial Yank coach in Gator and (1) outside expert in Joe Kerrigan, and (I guess) neither one is up to the job, unless the pitchers are just plain lousy and uncoachable. I give up…what do you think?

  15. 2007 Yankees July 2nd, 2007 at 4:07 pm

There is nothing MLB can do about trading a player, then re-signing him on the off season. They do have rules about signing free agent players and attempting to trade them immediately. You can, however, pick up an option year and then trade the player, like they did with Sheffield.

  16. Doreen July 2nd, 2007 at 4:07 pm

    Thanks, SJ.

  17. Doreen July 2nd, 2007 at 4:08 pm

    And thanks 2007 Yankees.

  18. 2007 Yankees July 2nd, 2007 at 4:09 pm

    You’re welcome Doreen.

Now go buy some Yankee franks and root them on for a 13-4 pounding of the Twins tonight.

  19. Gayle July 2nd, 2007 at 4:13 pm

MLB might not be able to do anything if that happened (WHICH I DO NOT THINK IT SHOULD) but the union certainly would if it involved transferring of a contract or money (MLB has to approve those kinds of trades)look at what they did with arod and the boston trade the ONLy reason why that didnt happen was the union and MLB

  20. Captain541 July 2nd, 2007 at 4:23 pm

What exactly is the reason that Myers is still on this team? I get it the reason must be…So in Sept. when the Yanks play Boston and they are 15 games back he can face Ortiz..and give up a double to him. That must be the reason. Cashman get rid of the dead wood already!!??!! Ramirez is finally here now Torre actually give him a chance..yesterday would of been a perfect game to bring him into. Knowing Torre he will bring him into a 3-1 game tonight(yanks winning) he will give up a run and then Torre will send him back to the bullpen and never use him again. Get rid of Myers and bring up Britton give him a chance. Bruney should really be in the minors to work on his command but they have no one to replace him with.

  21. 2007 Yankees July 2nd, 2007 at 4:24 pm

The problem with the Arod to Boston deal was that Boston was attempting to devalue Arod’s original contract, which you cannot do.

  22. Adam July 2nd, 2007 at 4:25 pm

Michael Kay keeps saying that Guidry and Torre changed the way Myers is throwing by switching him on the opposite side of the rubber on the mound. So, apparently, that’s why right handers have a harder time facing him and lefties have an easier time hitting him.

My question is this: if the Yankees wanted more out of a lefty specialist in Mike Myers, why is he even on this team? There was no reason to start screwing around with his mechanics to try and turn him into a regular middle reliever. There’s a reason he’s only supposed to be in there to face lefties.

As for the rest of the bullpen, there’s really not a whole lot to be said…with the exception of Bruney and Proctor, I think everyone in there is expendable if we can get anything in return as the deadline nears closer.

  23. Tommy July 2nd, 2007 at 4:28 pm

One possible explanation for Myers reverse splits is the quality of batters he tends to face from each side. For lefties, he’s typically brought in to face the best lefty on a given team (e.g. Ortiz), whereas when he’s left in for righties they are usually lesser hitters. He’s rarely asked to pitch to a dangerous RH bat (e.g. Ramirez). I’m guessing here, but an interesting study would be to look at this more closely.

  24. Drive 4-5 July 2nd, 2007 at 4:29 pm

I agree with you SJ44. Sherman’s column was stupid and irresponsible.

I attended Saturday’s game and it appeared to be the least inspired game I’ve seen in a long time. Joe Torre says Abreu is embarassed about his play. I have to say I was embarassed watching his play. The same goes for Robinson Cano.

I’ve been attending games since ’63 and this Yankee team looks a lot like the Horace Clake era teams. You always knew Roy White was busting it, but you were always wondering about the rest of the team.

  25. Drive 4-5 July 2nd, 2007 at 4:30 pm

    That’s Horace Clarke, not Clake!

  26. Vince July 2nd, 2007 at 4:36 pm

Is it time to try Steven White yet? Can’t be worse than Igawa as a starter.
    Dump Farnsy, bring up Britton.
Dump Myers, bring up Henn or make Igawa a lefty reliever. He’d be good if teams saw him just one time through.
DL Damon, bring up Shelly Duncan, put him at 1B.
As my grandfather used to say, “what could it hoit?”

  27. Drive 4-5 July 2nd, 2007 at 4:38 pm

Before someone shoots me, I should add Thurman Munson and Bobby Murcer to the list of hustlers on those teams.

My first Yankee fav Joe Pepitone was certainly on the list of dogs though.

  28. Drive 4-5 July 2nd, 2007 at 4:39 pm

    That’s an interesting theory Tommy.

  29. Mr. Faded Glory July 2nd, 2007 at 5:55 pm

Edwar Ramirez is not in the Circle of Trust. Thus we will see Scott Proctor instead

  30. Mr. Faded Glory July 2nd, 2007 at 5:56 pm

Tommy, it’s been that way his whole career. Facing the tough lefty is nothing new this year.

  31. Ross www.nyystadiuminsider.com July 2nd, 2007 at 6:02 pm

I hope we get to see Edwar. He could be huge for the Yankees in the 2nd half.
