Final day for Rivera questions

Peter Abraham
July
3

Today is the final day to submit a question for Mariano Rivera. We’ve had some great ones so far.

A reader alerted me that the Pinstripes Plus site is free until July 4. So you might want to check that out. I can’t attest to the site as I do not subscribe. They cover the minors.

Finally, if you try and comment and it does not show up, your comment likely got caught in the spam filter. Give me a chance to unstick it. Please don’t submit your comment 10 times under 10 different names. That just makes it look more like spam.

Trust me when I tell you, the spam filter is saving us all a lot of hassle.

    Cashman on Shelley Duncan

“We had discussions about it,” admitted Cashman. “I know one thing, he won’t scare up here. But in talking to our people down in Scranton, they said Shelly’s made tremendous progress this year but he’s not ready yet. That’s why we went with Andy Phillips.

He’s not ready yet? He has 12 homeruns ?

I’ll trust the guys who watch him everyday to make that decision. They have his confidence in their interest as well. It won’t do him any good to come up and hit .150 and get sent back down.

Pete the Yankee Scout site is a God’s Send for Yankee minor league fans. It is absolutely wonderful for comprehensive coverage all year long of the Yankees’ minorleague system, especially news about their Dominican players and how they are doing. I’m really shocked that you are not a member. I am so surprised that some of the media that follow the Yankees, including announcers have such a fundamental lack of knowledge of the life blood of this team. To know where the next A-rod or Jeter are coming from seems to me would be recommended by sports editors, etc. Shameful!

wasn’t that site always free in the past?

    12 homers.. he has 21 hoemruns….

yea and his brother is not ready also.

give the guy a few games if he fails send him down…most guys are not ready when they come up they develop further…

That’s funny. To know where the next A-Rod or Jeter is coming from.

Hey Tim, if you don’t already know the Yankees minor system is devoid of everyday players. The next Jeter/A Rod are right now on someone elses team.

I hope we can see Edwar pitch soon.

Two questions, one comment for Mariano

    1) What does Rivera think about John Smoltz having success as both a starter and closer? Does Mariano think he could have been (or be) and ace starter?

    2) I’ve heard rumors that MR is a great defensive OF. Would he be comfortable playing an inning of OF (say in a World Series game in an NL park) as a sub in double switch – then run in to pitch from the the OF like it was Little League?

    A) Thanks for being such a wonderful Yankee!

“He’s not ready yet? He has 12 homeruns ?”

maybe they were all on fastballs and he has shown he can’t hit breaking balls, kindof like Phillips…maybe his defense is terrible. there are things that minor league numbers might not tell us. i don’t know.

Cashman’s job is to ask his coaches and scouts for an honest opinion. he is doing his due diligence.

if A-Rod goes out for more than a week, i’d also like to see Duncan get a shot, just b/c they will be desperate for power. but the assumption that us, as fans, know more than Duncan’s coaches is kindof silly.

  11. hmmm

to be clear, i am talking about the minor league coaches, since i assume most people here get little opportunity to watch the minor league teams on a regular basis.

    Questions for Mo:

    1) Andy Pettitte once admitted that throwing the cutter hampered his change-up and vice-versa, do you find it difficult to throw both pitches accurately? Have you thrown a change-up in a game since experimenting with it in Spring Training? As you age, and your velocity diminishes, have you thought, accordingly, about incorporating the change-up into your repertoire or some other off-speed pitch or perhaps, even another breaking ball, besides your slider, to compensate and prolong your career?

    2) How much of your success do you attribute to your self-possession, seemingly unflappable composure, and resilience following a blown save? Indeed, has a blown save ever tormented you for any period of time afterward? If so, which one and for how long?

BTW, anyone listening to Kim Jones and Chris Carlin on WFAN? They’re speculating that the Astros could trade Roy Oswalt. Didn’t the Astros just extend his contract through 2011? Or are the talk-show hosts just engaging in the kind of idle conjecture and fanciful speculation the trade-deadline always seems to provoke?

If there’s any validity to it, the Yankees should inquire about what it will take to acquire. With the posssible exception of Hughes, Cashman should consider yielding one of his elite prospects for Oswalt.

Matt, good questions. But you should email them to Pete.

    thanks, saucy
