Roger Clemens won his 350th game as the Yankees beat the Twins

Now the bad news. Alex Rodriguez strained his left hamstring and could be headed for the DL. Meanwhile Brian Cashman spoke to his wife about her attire and the Yankees signed a talented young outfielder.

The good news for Alex is that he gets a $200,000 bonus for making the All-Star team. Just wondering, but when Scott Boras negotiated that deal with Texas, what didn’t he get?

I was at the game last night and it was terrific to watch Roger win his 350th. It was also good to see some small ball like Melky’s bunt single and an attempted squeeze bunt. They need to be aggresive on the bases and the Yanks did that last night.

I was, however, dismayed when A-Rod pulled his hammy and even more so when some people had the nerve to boo him when he came off. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? I’m sorry, but that’s just unacceptable. The guy tried to stay in the game and he couldn’t do it. If he did he probably would’ve injured his leg even more. Give the AL player of the month for June and our best hitter (he was also POTM for April) a freaking break.

A-Rod better be OK! We need you buudy!

  3. mel July 3rd, 2007 at 11:51 am

Hoping for a great game today. You always have a chance with Wang on the mound.

  4. Andrew July 3rd, 2007 at 11:57 am

Jer, they probably booed because he was being taken out. They weren’t booing A-Rod, because he even tried to stay in the game.

    “attempted squeeze bunt”

i’m still in disbelief on that one… thought they only tried those in spring training games…

Pete, is there a history of bad blood between ESPN and torre/yankees or is this frustration? the ny post reported that torre snapped at an espn reporter when asked about the whole shirt contraversy. do you see a diference between the team treats the local press and the outsiders?

  7. Joe Monte July 3rd, 2007 at 12:06 pm

Ok, say ARod goes on the DL b/c its better off for him long-term to rest that hanstring and the MRI might indicate it is needed, who gets the call up from the minors to play everyday at 3B? Obviously, no one is going to replace his numbers and defensive play, but we can’t go w/ Cairo at 3B during that stretch. Basak? Eric Duncan? Move Phillips to 3B and play Eric Duncan or Shelley Duncan at 1B? Throwing ideas out there. I would bring Duncan up since nothing has worked right all season so why the hell not.

the loss of a-rod is terrible . yanks cant afford to lose him for any amount of time and certainly not 15 days .

  9. Russell NY July 3rd, 2007 at 12:25 pm

Cashman needs to pick up some lesser name guy to play first, like Hillenbrand… here is our lineup:

    Damon
    Jeter
    Abreu
    Posada
    Matsui
    Cano
    Melky
    Cairo
    Phillips

A little scary, especially at the bottom. If Abreu and Matsui play up to their potential though, it isn’t a total bomb.

Scis – yes there is a lot of bad blood between tWWL and Torre.

Torre has hated them ever since the Clemens vs Piazza bat incident in the subway series because they kept showing the replay over and over and over again and he thought it was ridiculous that they just kept showing.

    Also Pete, A-Rod didn’t get one thing….
That private plane that he wanted for his whole family to fly on during road trips.

If A-Rod goes on DL, the season is really over

  12. ray July 3rd, 2007 at 12:36 pm

Congratulations to Clemens on his victory last night and his 35oth career win! Even as a Red Sox fan I recognize one of the all time great pitchers in baseball. It will be interesting how much gas he has left in the tank after that game. After Schilling’s near no hitter he got bombed the next game and hasn’t really been effective. Granted the two are different pitchers but they are in the same age range and would therefore be at least susceptible to the same type of patterns.

That private plane that he wanted for his whole family to fly on during road trips.

Yeah but he got the money for the plane :) But I don’t hear about him using it for road trips just for personal use.

You got to admit that contract was just the best (from a player standpoint) who was the negotiator for the Rangers? Does s/he still have job? LOL

Being serious for a moment I do wish Alex a speedy recovery

But, if I recall correctly, Schilling threw well over 100 pitches…which could explain the soreness in his shoulder… I don’t think Roger went over 100, and if he did, it wasn’t by much.

  15. nyy July 3rd, 2007 at 12:59 pm

Schilling threw exactly 100 pitches to go 9 innings…Clemens threw 97 to go 8 innings. And Clemens is much older than Schilling so I am worried what effect this game will have on Clemens. One more thing to be worried abt.

  16. jennifer July 3rd, 2007 at 1:03 pm

    Roger was under 100 pitches.

Any word on Alex? I fully expect him to sit tonight, I just hope he isn’t out too long.

  17. jennifer July 3rd, 2007 at 1:07 pm

He threw a 2 hitter, it was a very easy 2 hitter. Why are you worried?

  18. T.J. July 3rd, 2007 at 1:12 pm

If the Yankees fall into a major slump that’s when I think we will miss what we had in Alex. I would think if he went to DL it would be a good time for Damon and Abreu to step up their game. Matsui as well.

We need all our big hitters at least to keep the threat. The Captain and Posada always comes through, but they’re going to need all the help they can get.

I wish Alex a speedy recovery. We can always use his talent and this season so far I can say his appearance at the plate gave you a spark of hope. He was coming through when we needed it even if we didn’t always get the win.

It’ll be too bad to not see him represent the Yankees in the All-star game but I would rather him heal and come back healthy.

  19. Global Warming July 3rd, 2007 at 1:21 pm

Stay away from Hillenbrand. He’s a punk and he’s one of the worst offensive playes in BASEBALL. He’s also no Gold Glover to boot.

It would really tick me off if Cashman went out and got Shea Hillenbrand before giving Shelly Duncan a SHOT.

  20. E-ROC July 3rd, 2007 at 1:31 pm

I don’t think we’ll be in trouble. Maybe, I’m being optimistic. Look, I know we’re in trouble as far as having enough positional players. Can Andy Phillips play 3rd??? I know he can play 2nd. We wouldn’t have this issue if Damon wasn’t on the wrong side of thirty, otherwise he would be in the outfield and we would have Cabrera on the bench instead of Thompson. It would help if Andy could play third, so A-Rod could DH and Damon can play first base. If A-Rod goes on the DL, it would simplify things to a degree. We need to have one of the bullpen guys traded or DFA to make room for Shelley or Eric Duncan or Chris Basak. I think Myers is gone before Farns leaves.

  21. Ranting Guy July 3rd, 2007 at 1:57 pm

Any y’all who are about Roger’s age (like me) or older knows that even if you’re in really good shape, you just don’t recover as quickly as when you were a young stud or stud-ette. If the Wanger or even Pettitte looked solid throwing a 100+ pitch 2-hitter it could be indicative of a hot streak that could carry over to the next several games. I hope Roger is feeling solid and has been building his stamina steadily enough. But even if he’s doing that, he’s still 44 and the next game could easily turn out to be a little hiccup on his road to regaining his full strength. He’s a rarity for his age and he’ll probably have a pretty good year, but I doubt it’ll happen without showing he’s human once in a while. I’m surprised how everyone focuses on one game like its a microcosm of the whole garsh durned season. Even Rocket’s young buddy Pettitte recently showed he’s human, but we know he’ll be fine. Let’s hope the team worries more about the relievers, 1B, the offense and picking each other up if A-Rod’s out for any length of time.

  22. ray July 3rd, 2007 at 2:12 pm

Indeed Clemens is a rarity for his age. With that being said I’m just not sure how much he can be relied upon to consistently deliver games like the one last night. I think it is more reasonable to think he will provide 5-6 innings and have an ERA that ranges between 4 and 5. I don’t say this as a Sox fan who is looking for any opportunity to trash Clemens. As already indicated I have the same concerns about Schilling. The Sox have a tough decision to decide how much you offer Schilling to resign and for how many years at his age.

  23. T.J. July 3rd, 2007 at 2:40 pm

If Clemmons can stay healthy and have the confidence and desire to play as long as Nolan Ryan did, I’d say he could still put out the juice.

Anyone remember Ryan late in his career putting Robin Ventura of the White Sox putting him in a headlock? His pitch hit Ventura and he charged to the mound. Lol I was like seven or eight years old but still remember it as if it was yesterday. Ventura got owned by the man!

My grandpa would take me to all the Ranger games when I visited them in Dallas. I was lucky to catch a ball he pitched to the great Kirby Puckett in which he fouled behind home plate.

I barely remember the play only that the ball hit me while I was sitting down trying to eat my nachos. My grandpa had me to stand up and take a bow. What an experience as a kid watching the last games of one of the greatest pitchers of all time Nolan Ryan. Met the guy and I can’t help but still remember his Texas twang but all class when he would talk to us kids at camp and when you would see him out. Never turned away a fan.
