A few notes after a long day

July
7

No audio today. Nothing worth uploading to be honest.

The five errors were the most since Aug. 9, 2002 against Oakland in a 16-inning game. The 14 strikeouts were the most since last Aug. 20.

Melky Cabrera joined Andruw Jones and Craig Monroe in the five strikeout club this season. The last Yankees to do it was Andy Phillips in 2005.

Roger Clemens dropped his ERA to 3.63 in six starts and he’s 2-3. He has allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk in his last 16 innings.

The Yankees are guaranteed to enter the All-Star break under .500 for the first time since 1992.

Tough break for Miguel Cairo, who made a nice play to keep the ball from going into right field. But you have to make a better throw than that. “I pride myself on defense and I have to make that play,” he said. “I didn’t do my job.”

That’s the blogging for tonight. Make sure to check in tomorrow for the exclusive Mariano Rivera Q&A.

    Pete,

Was there any reaction to the disgusting antics by K-Rod as the game ended?

  2. Stuart

Krod always does the antics but I got a novel idea, beat him and he cannot do his antics. I hate him but let’s be real, he wins or closes with the best of them, he tries not to throw strikes and almost always succeeeds..

he is a jerk but a helluva player. really isn’t that the only thing that matters.

Arod playing in the allstar game is stupid, it is not about the votes it is about his team and making the playoffs and 3 days off can do him good…

the lose many close games because of the pen and lack of small ball.. how did the angels score speed and errors on the yanks.. the walkoff HR does not happen often it usually is the little things that win these extra inning games…

that is about 8 killer losses this yr that the yanks should have won, but mistakes, bad desicion making by the players or manager and there you got it…

  3. Stuart

cairo is a good backup he is our bench…. He has actually done a good job this yr. tough day.

watching the tigers and red sox, Okajima is the best offseason signing period. they pay him peanuts and he is pitching out of his mind, he is better then he ever was in Japab the guy is over 30 and getting better I do not understand….

that is the best and luckiest signing in the offseason… baseball is a strange game, the players always say thats baseball I am starting to figure out why they say that. no shyme and reason to things…

  4. belial

you have got to give theo tons of credit for the Okajima signing. he’s been a Godsend for Boston. Meanwhile, Cashman did not do a single good thing this offseason and the Yanks are paying a heavy price.

  5. canofcorn

I sure hope that the idiots who posted that the Yanks would make the playoffs are feeling pretty darned stupid (and they all should be banned) now. There isn’t a chance in heck of that happening and there hasn’t been in months now.

It’s pretty simple to comprehend. Good teams win close games. The Yankees lose close games. In fact, they almost never win close games.

Everybody who’s name is on record for the playoff-bound Yankees has been owned by realistic fans like myself.

  6. canofcorn

And if the Yanks didn’t see fit to beat K-Rod, then they deserve to be humiliated by watching him act like a jackass. He should do a private dance show for that doofus Melky.

  7. 2Yankees143

Check our schedule for right after the all-star break. some of us are still optomistic that we will have a chance and I will watch every game until the last one and then evaluate the season. no need to jump to any conclusions unless you’re going to stay off the bandwagon when they do start win close games and pull out as the wild card team for the post season.

  8. kasey

“It’s pretty simple to comprehend. Good teams win close games. The Yankees lose close games. In fact, they almost never win close games.

i don’t know about owned, but i really am looking forward to hearing from all the people who blasted people like myself and SJ44 with “you’re going to look pretty stupid when they win the division,” which was then amended to “when they make the playoffs.”

if they miss the playoffs, does that mean everyone who made those playoff predictions looks stupid, or is that just being a “real fan?” i never understood how that works.

this team is pathetic. period. they’ll be great in a couple of years, but this season they’re far from great.

  9. Seth

So you should be congratulated for not believing in your team?

    Whatever floats your boat.

Just don’t be here in October when we’re watching October baseball.

  10. David

So Cairo gets a tough break comment when he makes an error, but Phelps gets mocked and run out of town. Phelps was a much better option at first, but Peter will never admit it.

  11. Peter Abraham

    David:

You’re right, I’ll never admit something that is wrong. Meanwhile Phelps has yet to get an at-bat this month with the Pirates, a bad National League team. So that makes seven teams (Toronto, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Detoit, Baltimore, the Yankees and now the Pirates) who either cut him, traded him, left him unprotected or didn’t use him.

It’s staggering that all of those baseball people know less than you about evaluating players.

Cairo botched it up today but good. But anybody would have to admit he has played pretty well for them in the last month, offensively and defejnsively. I didn’t see you calling for Phelps the other day when he put down that squeeze bunt.

Meanwhile, if I had the power to run people out of town I’d certainly use it on somebody other than Phelps.

    Thanks for checking in.

  12. BBFan

Hey, do not count your chickens yet.
Wait until the last day of the regular season and see what happens. In any case, you do not own any one…...and there is no need to call the believers are stupid.

  13. BBFan

....and believers should not be calling non-believers stupid either.

  14. Stuart

the believers hould be calling the non believiers woosie fools. The Yanks do lose close games because year to date they have not been a good team but last I checked they have about 76 games to prove you wrong…

they need to do the same things many of us have been talking about for about 8 weeks; strengthen the bench by calling up Shelly Duncan, getting rid of Nieves(call up anyone), and getting rid of 1 pitcher(Myers at this point), and see if Ramirez is legit and then Britton. If those 2 are legit contributors it will help a ton.

these moves will increase payroll not a cent, make the team younger, and hopefully better. they can trade Myers there definitley would be a taker…

If these moves worke out then based on the Giambi situation they can go from there. Minky should be back in about 4 weeks that will help the bench because Cairo can be the utility guy and Minky and Phillips and maybe Damon can handle 1st. Hughes coming back will help the rotation a ton.

I have not given up on this team but good teams do win close games and we know what the results have been so far this year..

  15. T.J.

BBFan I agree. True fans always hope the best for their team and don’t give up on them the first half of the season.

I think it’s pretty lame to call fellow Yankee fans fools just because they have hope for their team. I’m not It’s not like I’m going to jump in the Hudson river if they don’t make the playoffs. I sleep at night after a loss and wait for the next game. Thank goodness the team doesn’t give up like some of the fans and refuse to play. I’m sure a lot of them are going out there with all sort of injuries. Wang’s been playing with injuries, Jeter, Damon, Alex, Jorge and I’m sure others. They lose they win. We play good we play bad. It’s the nature of the game. If you can’t deal with it then I guess it’s time to chose another sport to root for like ping pong tournaments.

The game today was tense no doubt for both Angel and Yankee fans. I see we weren’t the only teams going into extra innings. Mets/Astros just went into the 17th inning. Long games for the Eastern teams I see. Angels and Yankees had some of the best pitching today and both teams fought to win. I wouldn’t be too hard on the team today since they had a big win last night.

As for A-Rod playing in ASG. I think it’s an honor to have him at least show up for the fans. Stuart our captain has been plagued with problems and and need a rest as well. He’s been playing hurt I would imagine from the way he’s been taken out of a couple games. He has not had a rest. Yet he is still showing up and playing in the ASG.

The ASG are for the fans. We voted these guys in and as much Hell as A-Rod gets, I’m sure had he decided to sit out you and the NY Post would made a big deal out of it and with a headline reading ” A-Rod only cares about money and Not the Fans”. Since the MRI report came back clean why shouldn’t he play?

I am willing to bet he doesn’t play that much. In case you have never been it’s great to have representatives from your team. It was the fans who voted him in so why would he want to disappoint them. Those games are important to fans and the tickets are not cheap. If that’s the case then the players who are fighting injuries should all sit out.

  16. Pelotero

That was a hell of a rollercoaster ride Okajima gave us tonight.

Using the arguement that Phelps didn’t work out in Detroit; therefore, Pena and Young should not be working out for the Rays and Nationals. Here’s a better yet, Damon Easley for the Mets.

  17. David

Cairo is a bad baseball player Peter. He always has been. Teams that start players with an ops in the 600s are not good teams. But insult me with some stathead comment.

  18. Chuckles

For the record, Kasey said the Yanks weren’t going to the postseason last year as well.

No doubt he did the same thing in 2005 when they weren’t playing well.

Sooner or later, he’s going to be right.

He’s not exactly Nostradamus and doesn’t deserve credit for burying this team in April.

Just thought it was worth mentioning.

  19. Seth

Cairo might be a bad player, but he usually does the job. He was bad today, there’s no doubt about it. But he does a serviceable job. Josh Phelps, defensively, had about as much range as some of the old timer’s we saw today. And, he can’t pick a ball out of the dirt, and he was barely getting it done offensively.

With Cairo, you get more of a slap hitter who can do pretty much anything, and a guy that won’t embarass you with the glove. I would actually take a Cairo over a Phelps. You get more of the complete package. You get some offense and some defense, while you only get offense with Phelps.

This team has enough boppers, it needs the defense. Cairo usually helps provide that.

  20. E-ROC

I hope Phillips can get healthy so Cairo can go back to his original job. I’m not saying he did a bad job at first, but I do think he’s getting exposed and that’s not a good thing. We had our opportunities but couldn’t capitalize. I’m not terribly disappointed. We had some bad luck. I do think we’ll win the next game. I like our chances. I hope Phillips can play. I guess he has been dealing with some soreness in his neck. We need another position player.

  21. Mike S.

Teams that start players with an ops in the 600s are not good teams.

    Not necessarily true. One example:

    1941 YANKEES. WS Champs.

    1b Johnny Sturm. .239-3-36 OPS .593 124 g 524 AB.

    Another.

    1970 Baltimore Orioles. WS Champs.
    SS Mark Belanger .218-1-36 OPS .562 145 g 459 AB.

When you have enough teammates to cover for you, ...

  22. David

Cairo does not usually do the job. Part of the job is hitting. He’s bad at that. He’s merely an average fielder on top of that.
