A-Rod: I’m playing

Alex Rodriguez said he will play in the All-Star Game on Tuesday in San Francisco.

“I’m going to play, he said. “I think 3.9 million votes (from fans), you feel like you have a responsibility to go out there and play. I’m feeling pretty good.

Rodriguez said his left hamstring was still not 100 percent, however.

The Yankees would prefer he not play but cannot mandate that. Joe Torre suggested that Rodriguez would likely only play three innings.

He’ll get an at bat and call it a day.

I see his point. When you have that many votes from fans you at least want to show up and not disappoint. I mean the man gets slammed for playing in an allstar game when it was fans that voted him in?

If he sat out the first thing the media do is criticize him and call him selfish. Probably adding he does not appreciate the fans wanting him to appear since it was the fans who wanted him there the first place. I agree with Torre he won’t play that long.

I’m sure Jeter is still sore he’s been leaving the games with slight soreness but he’s playing and no one is making a big deal about that.

I have read how he said he enjoyed being at the Allstar activities last year with his daughter and meeting the fans.

A Rod figures it is better to play in the All Star game than to spend three days shopping with his wife. Which he should considering he is healthy enough to play and the Players Association agrees to the All Star game. Typical me-only attitude from the Yankees. Goes back to the 1939 Hall of Fame ceremony when Joe McCarthy could only spare OF George Selkirk and third string catcher Art Jorgens to the game. He was afraid of blowing a 19 game lead. The other 15 teams send 24 future Hall of Famers. Good show Alex.

Not only that, but there are fans who paid a LOT of money for a ticket to the ASG, specifically to see the best in the game they voted in. I really dont see the harm in playing a few innings, they always make sure that everyone gets in the game so its not like he’ll be playing the whole game. Plus he gets the days off around the game. I’m sure Jorge and Derek could use the days off and rest too, but its an honor they’re not about to turn down. I can’t blame them for that.

Smart decision, if you ask me.

If he’d taken the past several days off to rest the hamstring, not even DH, I could see begging off from playing in the All-Star Game (of course, if he’d done that, even that shouldn’t keep him from GOING to the ASG and being acknowledged by the fans).

But when the MRI came back “normal”, and he DHed only one game, and continued to play in the field, I think a LOT of fans would have been pretty cranky if his decision was to stay home.

After all, he DOES have enough fans to have garnered >4M votes. And so far, he has the good will of (most) Yankee fans. I would have been really surprised if he didn’t see the handwriting on the wall, so to speak.

That is absolutely ridilious. I would assume that the organization is not happy with his decision. He should be there because of all the votes but he should play at the most 2 innings and then get out of there. His obligations are only to the team and that is all they need is for him to get hurt even more playing in the game. After watching him running yesterday it is clear that he is not 100%. Hopefully he doesnt play in the game that long.

If he’s only going to play 2 innings why even go in the first place–theoreticallly speaking he”d get only 1 at bat. Also, he’s not playing the whole nine innings.

That’s great a-Rod is going to play… but what about Manny Ramirez? Has he come down with sore knees/headache/stomach flu/broken ribs or any other reason to not attend this year’s festivities yet? ;)

He seemed okay out there. I’m sure he will be careful, don’t think he’s going to try to steal any bases, besides in the all star game he will bat maybe twice. He got the most votes and if he bailed people would say he was selfish, he can’t win. Just hope he’s careful and Arod, Jeter, and Posada represent the Yanks well. :)

    Who cares if he plays?

It’s the last meaningful game he’ll be playing in this season, unless he gets traded.
