Clemens waits for the second game

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 07, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees handed out a roster for the Old Timers’ Game.

Five Old Timers are younger than today’s starting pitcher, Roger Clemens.

Clemens was born on Aug. 4, 1962. Rich Monteleone (3-22-63), Jim Leyritz (12-27-63), Scott Brosius (8-15-66), Homer Bush (11-12-72) and Paul O’Neill (2-25-63) are younger than Clemens.

Meanwhile, is Homer Bush really somebody who the fans want to see? Where’s Mike Figga and Andy Fox? Give us Danny Rios!

Back later with the lineups

Man… I really loved Brosius. I am psyched to see him again.

would be interesting to know the terms of participation for old timer’s day, meaning, do the yankees (and other teams) pay for travel? lodging? meals? comp pay for the day(s) off??

could be the cost falls on the player, in which case human nature takes over, and it’s about personal sensibilities.

perception often belies reality. i’ve found that getting anybody to come to anything when they have to pay is beyond difficult. i’m sure this is no exception if the guys aren’t generously comped.

for some, probably more the less than more famous, it’s an experience, a capstone, aura of the career there never was, etc., where as others, for whatever reason, no need.

I believe Fox is first base coach for the Florida Marlins actually.

  4. Joe L July 7th, 2007 at 12:34 pm

Can Homer still run? We could use a little speed on the bench.

And how long is it going to take the fans to start clamoring for his return from retirement if O’neil hits one out?

  5. Dr. Acula July 7th, 2007 at 12:35 pm

Whoa, the stadium must reek of Bengay and Brylcreem.

I heard today’s game is being sponsored by viagra and the prune council.

I hope nobody gets confused and accidently cuts Whitey Ford to count his “rings.”

Big props to *Venus Williams* (Compton in da hizzle!!), who crushed some French player for her 4th Wimbledon singles title. Love, ya Grrl!

    USA! USA! USA! USA!

It’s great to see guys like Brosius and Leyritz. Jimmy Leyritz is particular got a gig with MLB Radio and he really has a great radio personality. Love to hear him there, maybe YES will grab one Jim one of these years :)

  7. Dan July 7th, 2007 at 12:40 pm

Homer Bush is here why? Was Andy Stankiewicz not available?

  8. Dave July 7th, 2007 at 12:41 pm

I live in Norwich Navigators land and remember the days of Mike Figga, Andy Fox, Ruben Rivera, Alfonso Soriano, Jason Robertson, Mike Lowell, Danny Rios, Tate Seefried, Nick Delvecchio, Ricky Ledee, Shane Spencer. The Connecticut Defenders are just not the same.

  9. Dan July 7th, 2007 at 12:51 pm

On another note, it will be great to see O’Neill and Brosius again. Brosius fell off of a cliff it seems. I haven’t seen hide nor hair of him since he retired.

Homer Bush was a key contributor on perhaps the greatest team in the history of the game – how could you not want him to attend an old-timers game. I think he is more worthy than some of the dregs of the late 60s and late 80s/early 90s.

  11. Jim M July 7th, 2007 at 12:54 pm

It’s ironic to think Homer Bush was one of the three guys we sent to Toronto for Clemens… Maybe that’s why he’s here…

  12. Emobacca July 7th, 2007 at 12:54 pm

    Homer Bush was hood

    Don’t hate

  13. chazzh July 7th, 2007 at 12:58 pm

Homer was part of that 98 team- so he will always be welcome to me. Same can be said for anyone on that 96 team (my favorite of all of them). So Dale Polley, Graeme Lloyd, David Weathers, Clay Bellinger, etc- come on down!

Incidentally, I think Homer had a really bad leg injury which cut short his career (which is why he is an old timer at age 34).

Does O’Neill even have to hit one out- I have been clamoring for him since he retired- Seriously- who wouldn’t take him over Abreu- right now?

  14. Kevin (Canada) July 7th, 2007 at 12:59 pm

    How about Alvaro Espinoza?

  15. Jon July 7th, 2007 at 1:06 pm

    Where’s Clay Bellinger these days?

  17. Doreen July 7th, 2007 at 1:25 pm

    Nick,

Thanks for the update. I was just thinking about Karstens a couple of days ago, realizing he was so off anyone’s radar that there was no news at all about him. I thought that meant he wouldn’t be pitching for the rest of the year, so it’s good news for him that he’s back on the mound.

  18. Rocco July 7th, 2007 at 1:32 pm

    WHERE IS SHANE SPENCER?!?!?!

  19. Mike NYY July 7th, 2007 at 1:35 pm

    No lineups posted today?

  20. gayle July 7th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

In case anyone cares bp just finished daryl strawberry hit 2 hour back to back , oniel got loud applause just for stepping in the box and hit a hr

  21. gianthinker July 7th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

Homer Bush? Homer Bush!?! He was a guy a lot of people thought would be a monster and then we traded him to the Blue Jays and he dropped off the planet. Thats crazy. I cant believe he’s there. They must be running out of good old timers they can invite. When I was a kid I use to see Yogi and Mantle and Reggie play. Now its Homer Bush? I’m happy to see Brosius and O’Neill in the game though. See, those are Yankee greats that should be honored by this game. Homer isnt good enough to be mensioned with these guys.

  22. Global Warming July 7th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

Leyritz and O Neil look great. How about we ship Abreu and Will Nieves out of here and bring em both back? ;)

  23. Scooter July 7th, 2007 at 1:56 pm

    Nick -
Thanks for the news on Karstens
Supposedly Rasner is also scheduled to throw a game.
I’m hoping Hughes makes it through his Monday start healthy

TJ Beam should be back in Scranton soon, and Ohlendorf sounds close to returning to the rotation after another start at GCL. Runelvys Hernandez has just been released to make room in the rotation.

  24. Justin July 7th, 2007 at 1:57 pm

I don’t know if you noticed, but Mickey Mantle is dead. I wouldn’t expect to see him at any future Old Timer’s Day games.

  25. Scooter July 7th, 2007 at 1:57 pm

As far as the Old Timer’s Game – just very happy Bobby Murcer is attending, and is going to take a swing or two.

  26. Green Tea Torre July 7th, 2007 at 2:04 pm

if i had to guess, i’d say most people at the stadium know homer bush’s name more than half of these guys. not saying he’s a better player, but it’s not like the fans are going nuts over these utility infielders from the 70s…

  27. Dr. Acula July 7th, 2007 at 2:05 pm

_I don’t know if you noticed, but Mickey Mantle is dead. I wouldn’t expect to see him at any future Old Timer’s Day games._

    No kiddin’ !!!!

I just thought he was passed out. LOL!

Well, he won’t make the game, unless they dig him up pronto.

  28. Mike S. July 7th, 2007 at 2:06 pm

    Hey, Homer hit .380 in 1998! (71 ab….).

We remember ALL those who contributed to that wonderful year! :-)

  29. Jim Johnson July 7th, 2007 at 2:10 pm

I wonder when we’re going to see Ricky.

  30. Mike NYY July 7th, 2007 at 2:11 pm

One team gets O`Neill and Brocius? Not right :D

I think Homer Bush would be happy to take a seat if great Yankee WILLIE RANDOLPH took the field!!!!

How great would that be, the Post and News back page would explode.

  34. Global Warming July 7th, 2007 at 2:20 pm

Former yankee pitcher Danny Rios is still playing baseball in Korea.
and He is the No.1 pitcher in korean baseball league now.

  39. Stef July 7th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

O’Neil hit a HR? Wow! He was saying he hadn’t picked up a bat even once since he retired. He retired WAY too early. Miss Paulie. He’s a goofball on the broadcasts. Really enjoy him in the booth. He SO doesn’t take the job seriously. I wonder how long he’ll do it. I hope he sticks to it.

If I’d been in NYC today, I would have gone just to see O’Neil and Brosius again on the field. Good times. But yeah, where’s Tino? Not retired long enough perhaps?

  40. Stef July 7th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

    Hey Taiwanese Fans!

Does Wang have a blog in Chinese? If he does, will you post that URL, please?

    Thanks!
