Game 86: Angels at Yankees

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 08, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Pregame chatter: No lineup today, sorry. I’ll be getting up in a few hours and getting on the road to spend the All-Star break with my family, specifically my godson Jason, who is turning 2 this week.

I have not seen the little guy in a few months, so I plan to spend my Sunday doing whatever he wants to do. I’m also eager to see my niece Leah, who is 6. We might be going to see Shrek 3 this week.

So enjoy Chien-Ming Wang vs. Ervin Santana and I will check back in here when I get a chance.

In the meantime, use this post to discuss the game once it gets going.

  2. Jimmy the Saint July 8th, 2007 at 1:18 am

  3. T.J. July 8th, 2007 at 1:43 am

Pete have some fun with your family. Shrek 3 is good. Went with my older sister, nephew and niece. Not as good as Sherk 1 & 2 but enjoyable. Thanks for the updates Pete you deserve a nice break like the players guy.

  4. gianthinker July 8th, 2007 at 1:58 am

Peter-Enjoy your time with the kids. Family is the most important thing. They them we all say hello.

“So you should be congratulated for not believing in your team?

    Whatever floats your boat.

Just don’t be here in October when we’re watching October baseball.”

not at all. my point was, if i’m an idiot if the yankees make the postseason when i thought they wouldn’t, does that make you an idiot when they miss the postseason, even though you thought they wouldn’t? doesn’t it have to go both ways?

or, here’s the bigger point: maybe don’t call people like myself, sj44 and the others idiots. maybe allow us to cheer for the team in our own way and avoid belittling our intelligence because we had the gall to point out the flaws in this team.

we’ll all be watching october baseball. and, this year, so will the yankees.

    next year? who knows.

Please read that! Perfect example of why I hate Bostonians.

  7. Global Warming July 8th, 2007 at 3:35 am

    Take it easy Pete.

  8. Col July 8th, 2007 at 3:47 am

    How about this idea.

Mussina takes Wang’s spot in the rotation after the All Star break for one time. That makes it so Mussina doesn’t get off his much desired normalcy.

More importantly, it gives Wang’s finger a bunch of days off. We miss Wang for 1 start, but Wang’s finger needs healing. Maybe with that many days healing he will be the Ace Wang we saw a couple starts ago.

  9. kasey July 8th, 2007 at 3:57 am

    enjoy the break, pete.

  10. E-ROC July 8th, 2007 at 4:31 am

    Be easy Pete.

  11. E-ROC July 8th, 2007 at 4:34 am

We’ll win today. I hope Andy Phillips will play. The score would be 7-3.

  12. murphydog July 8th, 2007 at 7:02 am

    Pete:

    Enjoy the break.

End of first half report card: While the baseball has been less than great so far, your work in the paper and on the blog has been very readable, candid and enlightening. You are proving something I have long believed, that we learn much more about baseball in a bad season than in a good one. When it’s going well, you tend to think it just happens that way. When it goes poorly, you see how hard this game is, how much has to come together and go well at the same time, both on the field and in the front office. Much appreciated. Thanks.

Movie tip: Took my daughter to see Ratatouille and it was a big hit. (She’s just a little older than your niece so I think Leah would like it too). Shrek 3 went over well also.

  14. Megan H July 8th, 2007 at 9:55 am

How does Kevin Long keep his job?

    But where’s the accountability?

Is anything going to get done about Cano and Cabrera’s lack of plate discipline? Look at the pitches they swing at. It’s like watching little leaguers. Do they even talk about this stuff?

How many times do we have to watch them not get a runner in from 3rd with less than 2 outs? Again, do they even talk about this stuff?

Of course, I’m sure that they DO address these things. But whatever Long’s doing is obviously ineffective. When is someone’s feet going to be held to the fire?

  15. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 10:36 am

Megan thats what I keep asking! The team is more off on hitting than on. At least it seems that way. Yesterday was a game we should have won!!

  16. Yankee Fan in Chicago July 8th, 2007 at 10:43 am

If you only go to the one movie, go to see Ratatouille, much better than Shrek 3, which blew.

  17. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 11:07 am

I saw Tatouille. Cute movie! A little long though.

  18. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 11:12 am

Ugh we need an edit button Ratatouille.

  19. River Ave Report July 8th, 2007 at 11:23 am

    LET’S GO YANKEES

  20. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 11:30 am

    Anyone find the lineups?

  21. BBFan July 8th, 2007 at 11:31 am

Peter, enjoy your time with the family.

Today we should win and go out on a positive note for the first half. if we do win, 2 out of 3 from Angels is a good result.

  22. murphydog July 8th, 2007 at 11:38 am

This season no job is safe, including Long’s job. But for all of you who want to throw him under the bus consider this:

    1) the Yankees are no. 3 in runs scored.

    2) Yesterday, the Yankees faced John Lackey, who has 11 wins, a 2.91 ERA, which I think is third behind Haren and Santana, has 98Ks… need I go on?

    3) Lackey was followed by Shields who has a 1.70 ERA with 42 Ks in 47 innings and is arguably the best setup man in baseball. K-Rod has 53 Ks in 38.2 innings and has 24 saves in the first half.

Nobody is beating up on these pitchers. So, maybe it’s not Long’s fault after all.

  23. BBFan July 8th, 2007 at 11:45 am

    Kasey,

I never called you or SJ44 or any others idiots or fools. In fact, I enjoy the perspective SJ44 brings to the discussions here.

But, you guys have to understand one thing. Many bloggers come here to have good time. We all have to put up with your constant negativism about the team and various players even when the team is winning that day. Sure, the team is not going good this year so far. Many of us beleive that the team will turn around after the ASG with a few reinforcements and make it to the playoffs. Will we be right? God knows what will happen and we will not know until the end of the season or close to it. But one thing is sure, we are having good time believiing in it. If at the end of the season it does not happen, so be it. The better teams would have won. Every team has fans and let them have some good time for a change.

I am not saying that you should not be critical of the team. Yesterday was an example when the team and the manager deserved great deal of criticism. All we expect is a balanced discussion instead of being negative all the time.

  24. Andy July 8th, 2007 at 11:54 am

Enjoy your time off Peter and if you happen to see Brian Cashman, light a fire under him to work some deals to ignite these Yankees. Gotta have a good 2nd half or Bellevue will be seeing some Yankee fans by October 1st.

Jennifer you beat me to it was just writing it down as they showed on BP show. Jorge catching again after 13 innings and he is going to all star game so not really time off. We need something anything that can give him a break

  29. gayle July 8th, 2007 at 12:06 pm

If we win that is 2 series in a row not a bad way to go into the all star break

  30. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 12:07 pm

:P thats where I got it from too.

Yeah poor Jorge :( too bad we don’d have a back up catcher that could hit .200. Maybe Jorge would get the day off. :( It was very hot outside yesterday too, and very hot today.

Butch Wynegar, Mike Heath, Rick Cerone, pinstriped courtesy phone, please.

This is getting to be re-godham-diculous. And its gonna be a scorcher again, today. Can ‘zilla catch?

I hope ARod gives the brother a lift out to the coast.

  33. Enter Sandman July 8th, 2007 at 12:15 pm

Can’t fault the bullpen in recent outings but the sleepy bats better start waking up. Manufacture runs and stop stranding runners. Get into the other team’s bullpen early and often.

  34. Go Tampa Bay July 8th, 2007 at 12:18 pm

Despite all the fingernail and blister problems, let’s hope Wang can keep it together for at least 4 innings. Yanks will definitely lose this game, but maybe Wang can give up less than 5 runs to keep the team in the game for a while and not allow it to turn into a rout.

  35. Mark July 8th, 2007 at 12:20 pm

Yeah Jennifer, well said. Jorge needs a backup catcher …big time. This should be a high priority with Cashman. He can dangle Farnsworth as bait during the ASB. The same with Myers.

  36. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 12:24 pm

hypothetical question since i am not going to read through the entire game thread:

if Mariano had thrown 14 pitches in the 9th, would he have come out for the 10th? of course he would. so why not bring him back for the 11th?

it wasn’t the difference in the game, but Torre is not putting his team in the best position to win. using Farnsworth in extra innings should be done as little as possible. using mo should be done as much as possible.

Mo threw FIVE pitches in the 10th. again, it didn’t cost them the game, but it’s just another obvious tactical blunder.

i hope Torre was watching Soscia.

  37. Scott Shields for MVP July 8th, 2007 at 12:27 pm

Soscia will probably use Shields for 3 innings today too.

  38. Woah July 8th, 2007 at 12:38 pm

Eurbiel Durazo supposedly signed a minor league contract with the Yankees: http://mx.sports.yahoo.com/050.....urazo.html

Thank god – we need a somewhat decent first baseman.

  39. Woah July 8th, 2007 at 12:40 pm

hmmm – i see what ur saying, but mariano could have pitched 9 innings, the yankees werent going to score against shields and krod.

  40. Scott Shields for MVP July 8th, 2007 at 12:52 pm

    Regarding Durazo,
Kudos to Cashman for finding trash in the junkyard.

  41. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 12:54 pm

Pete posted that Cash knocked down that rumor. Said he didn’t sign him.

  42. Mike NYY July 8th, 2007 at 12:54 pm

hmmm – i see what ur saying, but mariano could have pitched 9 innings, the yankees werent going to score against shields and krod.

Yeah but K-Rod wouldn’t have pitched the 14th. We might have been able to win still.

  43. Mike NYY July 8th, 2007 at 12:55 pm

Pete posted that Cash knocked down that rumor. Said he didn’t sign him

He might have meant that he hadn’t signed him yet though. He might have been signed today

  44. Woah July 8th, 2007 at 12:58 pm

Oh – thanks… I hope they sign someone soon though. The bullpen did a great job – Mo, Farns, Vizcaino… Cairo just blew that game for us.

  45. gayle July 8th, 2007 at 1:02 pm

Gotta love how Michael says it is a perfect day for baseball 90- something degrees with a heat index of 105 is not what I would call ideal, how long will it take for him to mention the heat and the effects it has on people.

  46. Mike NYY July 8th, 2007 at 1:03 pm

Gotta love how Michael says it is a perfect day for baseball 90- something degrees with a heat index of 105 is not what I would call ideal, how long will it take for him to mention the heat and the effects it has on people.

Perfect for him with air conditioning

  47. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 1:06 pm

The article that was linked was from July 5th.

  48. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 1:07 pm

I was at the game yesterday, the heat was horrible. I brought a bottle of frozen water, it was melted and hot in under 2 hours. I ended up leaving at the end of the 9th I couldn’t take it anymore.

  49. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 1:08 pm

“hmmm – i see what ur saying, but mariano could have pitched 9 innings, the yankees werent going to score against shields and krod.”

that’s why you have to give your offense as many chances as possible. would K-Rod have pitched ANOTHER inning? no, he wouldn’t b/c he threw 38 pitches.

just b/c it wasn’t the reason they lost doesn’t mean it wasn’t wrong.

kudos for Torre for going to Mariano in the 9th. that was the right move. but after a 5 pitch inning, he should have send him back out there.

  50. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 1:09 pm

But if Mo had gone back out for a third inning and got hurt, everyone would have been calling for Joe’s head.

  51. Mike NYY July 8th, 2007 at 1:11 pm

But if Mo had gone back out for a third inning and got hurt, everyone would have been calling for Joe’s head.

    That makes no sense

  52. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 1:14 pm

Why? Your closer is only supposed to go one inning, maybe two. You don’t want him pitching 3!

  53. Mike NYY July 8th, 2007 at 1:16 pm

Why? Your closer is only supposed to go one inning, maybe two. You don’t want him pitching 3!

The ASB is coming, Scioscia used his closer 3 innings and he won the game.

  54. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 1:18 pm

    Actually K-rod went 2 innings.

  55. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 1:23 pm

“Why? Your closer is only supposed to go one inning, maybe two. You don’t want him pitching 3!”

is this *really* your argument? that the # of innings is more important than the number of pitches?

    Mariano threw 14 pitches.

    K-Rod threw 38 pitches.

is it a coincidence that the Angels won the game?

  56. Mike NYY July 8th, 2007 at 1:23 pm

    Actually K-rod went 2 innings

    Shield went 3 innings then

  57. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 1:26 pm

also, mariano is on pace to pitch his fewest innings since 2002. he’s not overworked. he’s underworked. the AS break is coming.

he could have gone another inning. he was dominating.

it was stupid to remove him.

  58. Tseng July 8th, 2007 at 1:27 pm

Is Wang done because of the nail/blister problem?

  59. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 1:28 pm

Some guys are such hypocrites. When Rivera had some arm issues last year after a 3 inning outing, everyone killed Joe. People cant have it both ways.

  60. Mike NYY July 8th, 2007 at 1:29 pm

Some guys are such hypocrites. When Rivera had some arm issues last year after a 3 inning outing, everyone killed Joe. People cant have it both ways

Believe me, I wasn’t one of them

  61. Tseng July 8th, 2007 at 1:30 pm

I think since Mo hasn’t gotten much work and with the break coming up, he definitely could have gone 3 or at least part of 3 due to only throwing 14 pitches.

And nice, 4 runs in already thanks to Matsui!

  62. y July 8th, 2007 at 1:30 pm

    GODZILLA!!!!!

  63. Mike NYY July 8th, 2007 at 1:31 pm

    Sweet, nice start

  64. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 1:34 pm

“Some guys are such hypocrites. When Rivera had some arm issues last year after a 3 inning outing, everyone killed Joe. People cant have it both ways.”

well, i wasn’t one of them. he threw 25 pitches in that outing. 25 pitches.

how can i be a hypocrite if i fully supported that move?

seriously, sometimes Rivera throws 25 pitches in ONE inning. but do you want Joe removing him after 2 outs? of course not. Rivera has shown OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER that he is perfectly capable of 25-30 pitch outings.

what does it matter how many innings that happens over?

some people here have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

  65. Tseng July 8th, 2007 at 1:35 pm

I’m definitely no expert on pitching, but it might have something to do with the breaks between the innings and don’t pitchers do warm ups before they start each inning?

  66. Andrew July 8th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

Joe is just spooked after last inning, when Mo had forearm troubles. Without Mo, this team is truly dead for years. What reliever right now can even be remotely trusted with a lead?

  67. Andrew July 8th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

Not last inning. Last year. Baseball has infected my mind.

  68. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 1:37 pm

Have you ever pitched hmmmm. Because anyone who has done any pitching, even on a high school level, will tell you 25 pitches over 3 innings, getiing up and sitting down in middle, is much more difficult than 25 pitches in one inning.

  69. Mike NYY July 8th, 2007 at 1:37 pm

What reliever right now can even be remotely trusted with a lead?

    Edwar :D

After all isn’t he at least 10 times as good as Rivera? :D

  70. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 1:38 pm

Anyways, the run came in Viz’s second inning, where Mo would not have been in anyways.

  71. Mike NYY July 8th, 2007 at 1:39 pm

Anyways, the run came in Viz’s second inning, where Mo would not have been in anyways.

But Vizcaino would be in his 1st inning in the 13th though

  72. Matthew July 8th, 2007 at 1:39 pm

Mike, I don’t know what you are talking about, Rivera did not go 3 innings once last year. In fact he hasn’t gone 3 since the 2003 ALCS. Torre just doesnt do that with him.

  73. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 1:41 pm

“Have you ever pitched hmmmm. Because anyone who has done any pitching, even on a high school level, will tell you 25 pitches over 3 innings, getiing up and sitting down in middle, is much more difficult than 25 pitches in one inning.”

but would throwing 25 pitches in 1 inning also imply that you were in trouble in that inning? that those pitches were more stressful b/c there were men on base?? pitchers will ALSO tell you it takes more out of you to pitch out of jams.

i agree about having to warm up and sit in the dugout, but that 10th inning was SO EFFORTLESS he could have gone another. FIVE pitches. that inning was basically Mo throwing 5 more warm up pitches.

do you guys REALLY believe that Mariano couldn’t have pitched another inning, or are you just blindly defending Torre?

seriously, gun to your head, could Mariano have pitched another inning?

  74. Mike NYY July 8th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

Mike, I don’t know what you are talking about, Rivera did not go 3 innings once last year. In fact he hasn’t gone 3 since the 2003 ALCS. Torre just doesnt do that with him.

Didn’t he go three against the Mets last year?

  75. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

“Mike, I don’t know what you are talking about, Rivera did not go 3 innings once last year. In fact he hasn’t gone 3 since the 2003 ALCS. Torre just doesnt do that with him.”

yes he did. May 30th in Detroit.

  76. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 1:48 pm

Hmmm, to be honest, I agree that he could have stayed in, and i may have left him in. My point is that what Joe did was just as logical and defensible. He could have gone either way.

  77. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 1:51 pm

Wang has got to get this fixed. He hasnt given up runs in a while, but he doesnt look too sharp. They need him.

  78. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 1:53 pm

What I don’t get with Wang is, Why doesn’t Joe push his start back further when we come back? Have him be one of the last starters to pitch. Espically with this nail problem? No he has Mike start on 10 days rest.

  79. TKinDC July 8th, 2007 at 1:54 pm

Anybody else a little irritated that A-Rod is going to play in the All-Star game?

I know it is the league’s showcase but I really hope that the rest he would misses doesn’t come back to bite us in the rear. I think that Boras is to blame.

  80. Global Warming- Ilove Matsui July 8th, 2007 at 1:54 pm

Just got in but Matsui is making all those naysayers eat crow. Eat it gents……..EAT IT!

  81. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 1:55 pm

“My point is that what Joe did was just as logical and defensible. He could have gone either way.”

yeah, i mean, Joe is just being overly cautious with Mo. and while i don’t USUALLY have a problem with that, i just think they can’t afford that at this point.

    they need every single win.

  82. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 1:59 pm

“Anybody else a little irritated that A-Rod is going to play in the All-Star game?”

    not at all.

you are just looking for something to criticize him for.

he’ll play 2-3 innings and get 1-2 ABs.

    he’ll be fine.

it’s ridiculous that you think playing 2-3 innings in July will somehow affect the contract offers he’ll receive this offseason.

actually, wouldn’t Boras want him NOT to play??? isn’t it in Boras’ best interest that he NOT get hurt??

  83. mel July 8th, 2007 at 2:00 pm

Guidry and Wang act like father and son. It’s actually cute.

What a wacky week for pitching. Haren, Sabathia, and Pettitte and a lot of other good pitchers all get shelled. Old Man Clemens gives up one run in 8 innings. Today Robertson walks the two guys before Ortiz to load the bases and then proceeds to hit him. Everyone must be looking forward to the break.

Wang’s a rock. Can’t imagine pitching with that finger.

  84. mel July 8th, 2007 at 2:04 pm

A-rod has to play in the ASG. It would be a major PR blunder if he didn’t, especially since he’s playing in the field. Manny’s not playing today but says he’ll play in the ASG. Wasn’t there a year when Manny didn’t even show up?

  85. GuidryBall July 8th, 2007 at 2:05 pm

“What I don’t get with Wang is, Why doesn’t Joe push his start back further when we come back? Have him be one of the last starters to pitch. Espically with this nail problem? No he has Mike start on 10 days rest.”

Totally agree with you Jennifer. Time for Moose to show some guts, I’m sick of the “creature of habit” habits. Getting ridiculous.

ALSO – that close-up of Wang’s finger was pretty nasty. Not so much the blister, but the fingernail looked like that of a smack addict’s. Hopefully he can continue to throw up zeros, but if he feels like it’s beginning to get bad I hope he tells Guidry & doesn’t refuse to come out.

  86. TKinDC July 8th, 2007 at 2:06 pm

    hmmm-

I actually like A-Rod and want to keep him, I just think that a long break is better for him to heal up the hammy than his approach.

And Boras would definitely want him there in front of all the leagues’ GMs at the game. San Fran is one of the real suitors for him.

Its not that big a deal, but if he did get hurt (it only takes one play) then it would really really suck.

“Anybody else a little irritated that A-Rod is going to play in the All-Star game?

That’s ridiculous to be irritated. Both Jeter and Posada can also use the break. Jeter has been battling some soreness and hurt hamstring as well. Even though he’s been mum about it but no one is making a big deal out of him going.

A lot of people voted A-Rod to play and a lot of people have spent a lot of money to see him as well as other stars play. He obviously doesn’t want to let the fans down. If he didn’t play then you would have called him a selfish player that does not care about all the fans that voted the guy in. He had the most votes so obviously there are a lot of people going and watching to see he and others play.

I hate when people try to instigate anything that is affiliated with A-Rod or his family just to turn it into something negative. A-Rod is damned whatever he does good or bad.

If the guy decided to stay home then you would have called him selfish and that he let down all the millions of fans that voted him in. Time to back off the guy and stop using him as target practice because the NY media tries very hard to turn the fans against he and his family.

  88. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 2:09 pm

“And Boras would definitely want him there in front of all the leagues’ GMs at the game. San Fran is one of the real suitors for him.”

come on, this is silly. who doesn’t know what A-Rod can do? he’s been great for 10 years. and you are saying Boras really needs 2 innings to “Showcase” him??

  89. BBB July 8th, 2007 at 2:11 pm

I would have to agree w/hmmmm about Mo yesterday- I too thought he would come back out for a 3rd inning after he threw so few pitches in the 2nd one he pitched. Either way though, the way I look at it that L was just bad luck…of all the days for Phillips to have a stiff neck! What are the odds?! I’m sure the slew of Cairo haters here got all excited yesterday, but how much can you really blame the guy…he’s not a first baseman at all…yet in all his starts at 1b he has managed to save some hits/runs too, so let’s not send him off to face a firing squad yet.

anyway, I currently have the misfortune of listening to the game on the radio…what do Sterling & Waldman have to do to get fired already?? They are almost unlistenable! I remember last year Tino filled in for Waldman one night.. would love to see him become a permanent fixture around there.

  90. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 2:16 pm

Thats not how Peter’s name appears, nice try though.

  91. Doreen July 8th, 2007 at 2:21 pm

First, Pete, have a great weekend with the kiddies and the rest of your family. I concur with the assessment that if you have the choice, choose Ratatouille over Shrek 3. (Though I also agree Ratatouille might be a tad longer, plus there’s an hysterical short feature right before it by Pixar.)

McD’s has salads and yogurt, too! :)

  92. Doreen July 8th, 2007 at 2:22 pm

    Jennifer –

I fell for the fake Pete! But, still, I recommend Ratatouille.

  93. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 2:23 pm

yeah, no need for that crap.

  96. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 2:28 pm

BTW, where are all the people who kill Cano for being hungover during day games? What a ridiculous notion. If he was clubbing all night, in this city, the NY Post and such rags would be all over it.

  97. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 2:29 pm

Guidry: I’m a little slow, but where did you see the picture of Wang’s finger? I’m not sure I want to see it, but I do. I’m a freak.

  98. Melissa NY July 8th, 2007 at 2:30 pm

Mo, that is exactly what I thought

  99. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 2:30 pm

I wonder how low your IQ has to be to post with the names of players such as Jason Giambi. I mean, thats some gentle comedy.

  100. BBFan July 8th, 2007 at 2:32 pm

They showed Wang’ finger on the TV on the day he pitched. It really looked bad. He deserves long rest rather than Mussina to heal that finger.

  101. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 2:33 pm

BBFan: thanks for the info. I’ve been in Paris/Nottingham/London the past week or so so I’ve been watching on gameday. I miss all the good stuff!

  102. Erick July 8th, 2007 at 2:34 pm

Why bunt with a 7 run lead? Try and hit I say.

I’m guessing the Angels didn’t like that play by Melky.

  103. Jamie July 8th, 2007 at 2:35 pm

AROD DOES NOT NEED REST THIS GUY IS GOD…. AROD PRESIDENT IN 08

  104. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 2:35 pm

Yankees blew a 5 run lead the other day. I say bunt and get as many as you can.

  105. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 2:36 pm

30 home runs by the all-star break. That’s just plain nuts.

  106. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 2:37 pm

People on this board wanted to trade Alex for a package built around Santana. Phew.

  107. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 2:37 pm

    What’s the injury break for?

  108. Melissa NY July 8th, 2007 at 2:39 pm

“30 home runs by the all-star break. That’s just plain nuts.”
….and he still has some ABs left

  109. Larry July 8th, 2007 at 2:39 pm

Man, I really hope A-Rod sticks around for several years.

I wouldn’t mind seeing that trot around the bases for years to come.

  110. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 2:40 pm

Melissa NY: I know. But when I say things like you just said, I jinx, so I choose not to mention it :)

  111. Melissa NY July 8th, 2007 at 2:41 pm

    “What’s the injury break for?”

for AROD’s hammy. he tumbled over on a play at first the other day after colliding with Morneau. he missed a game because of it, and he said its still not 100%

  112. BBFan July 8th, 2007 at 2:41 pm

Looks like we will win today with 10-0 lead.
We do not have to debate Mo’s use or Joe’s moves later today.

Winning two series in a row against two very good teams is good progress.

The most positive sign is that mnay on the offense are starting to play to thier norm, exmaple Matsui. Pitching has been Ok and should continnue to improve.

Hopefully this will continue after the ASG, especially with the soft schedule. We can’t be worse than 10 games behind in the loss column in the division, in fact it will be nine if Detroit keeps the lead and wins.

  113. Melissa NY July 8th, 2007 at 2:41 pm

    andrea-
oops, i think i just jinxed it

  114. Scott Shields for MVP July 8th, 2007 at 2:41 pm

We need more runs, at least 20. This Angels team is just too darn good.

  115. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 2:42 pm

    Reesop is the injury break.

  116. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 2:43 pm

Thats alright Doreen, I found the post a little strange and did a little investigating, and found he was a fake.

  117. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 2:44 pm

Melissa NY: maybe not. I just have a tendency of jinxing. Sometimes it works out though. One time it was at the end of a game, A-Rod’s last at bat, it would seem, and the announcers were saying something about his 49 RBIs and I was thinking to myself well, no one’s on base, so he won’t be getting his 50th this game. Then he homered. So I guess my jinxing worked out in that sense!

  118. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 2:45 pm

Dude do you think you’re funny? Well I have news for you, you aren’t. When Pete gets back, he’ll likely ban you. He already warned people about impersonating others. So if you want to stick around you’d best cut it out.

  119. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 2:47 pm

hey fake Steve Lombardi: it’s weird enough that you troll his page, but does he even read this thing to realize that you’re being fake him to make it worth it to be an ass?

  120. Larry July 8th, 2007 at 2:47 pm

    Pete, enjoy the vaca.

    Watch Pan’s Labyrinth

  121. Anthony July 8th, 2007 at 2:48 pm

So who plays 3B next year when A-Rod leaves?

    I vote for Mike Lowell.

  122. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 2:50 pm

Arod cause he won’t leave. :)

  123. BBFan July 8th, 2007 at 2:50 pm

    A-Rod is not leaving.

At this stage in his career, it is legacy that matters to him, not some more money the other teams will be willing to give.

No team gives better legacy opportunity than
Yankees. He will extend with Yankees.

  124. Rocco July 8th, 2007 at 2:52 pm

*FYI The Yankees were 17.5 games better then the Red Sox AFTER the all star break. They were trailing by 6.5 at the break and ended up 11 games ahead. I’m not saying this will happen again, just that there is still HOPE. I will not give up on the AL East until the Yankees are mathematically eliminated.*

  125. Rocco July 8th, 2007 at 2:54 pm

*Also AROD will not leave. The Yankees have 42 million dollars advantage over any other team bidding on him, thank you Texas. They will extend him. Count on it.*

  126. TKinDC July 8th, 2007 at 2:55 pm

BBFan – - – I really hope you are right.

At some point you would think that he wants to settle in at one team and not be seen as a mercenary slugger-for-hire like McGriff back when he played or Sheff today.

  127. Larry July 8th, 2007 at 2:55 pm

They’ll have to extend him…he will get more money one way or another…if he doesn’t, it’d mean he parted ways with Boras.

    And if they don’t…Mike Lowell!??!?!

They will need to replace him with someone capable of carrying a team like A-Rod…Miguel Cabrera.

  128. Larry July 8th, 2007 at 2:56 pm

PS: I am not comparing Cabrera to A-Rod…A-Rod is one of a kind and is much better than Cabrera.

“Hacking hitters + Wang = pepto bismol time. Just hope for a few lucky breaks and that the Angels learn to score early and often.

I’ll tune in but I’ll likely want an update by the 7th, as I can’t stomach more hacking teams swinging at ball 2/3/4 vs this over-rated ground ball machine”

Wang’s overrated? How about Matsuzaka pitching against Tigers today? Lol

  130. TigersFan July 8th, 2007 at 2:57 pm

why is the world did you ever trade Sheffield is beyond me…

I can see you giving us Bonderman at 19 or 20.. but not Sheffield while still in his prime…

  131. Rocco July 8th, 2007 at 2:57 pm

err well not 42 mil but they have at least a $30 mil advantage.

  132. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 2:58 pm

Sweet game, its to hot to watch a blow out though. I`m probably going tpo go down to the pool though

  135. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 3:04 pm

Well if it is, than he should email Pete to get the “special” name, unlike this guy pretendng to be Pete.

  136. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 3:04 pm

How is Matsuzaka doing against the Tigers? I’ve thought he was overrated since Jeter hit a home run off of him. Not that Jeter’s bad, but Jeter is not a home run hitter. If Matsuzaka were really as good as everyone was making him out to be, that wouldn’t have happened.

  137. Mike NYY July 8th, 2007 at 3:05 pm

Dude, do you think you’re funny? Nobody’s laughing

  138. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

Tigers Fan–I don’t know how other Yankees fans feel, but based entirely on how obnoxious he is, I wouldn’t care if fSheff broke every record known to man, I’m still glad he’s gone.

  139. Melissa NY July 8th, 2007 at 3:09 pm

    jeter and arod are funny

  140. Melissa NY July 8th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

I have to disagree with you there. Jeter has hit homeruns off brandname pitchers before. Him hitting one off Dice-k shouldn’t mean Dice-k is “overrated.”

Does this mean we can be spared the Cy Young talk?

  143. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 3:14 pm

Melissa–you have a point. Jeter seems to hit home runs when they mean something, if that makes sense. It was just that game–it was the first time the Yankees saw Dice-K and I just wasn’t impressed with him.

  144. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 3:15 pm

sorry. didn’t mean the cross out.

  145. Melissa NY July 8th, 2007 at 3:15 pm

    andrea-
well, when you put it that way, then I agree. Yeah, that first game, I wasn’t too impressed either.

  149. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 3:19 pm

  150. Scooter July 8th, 2007 at 3:19 pm

Thanks Jennifer…. our little troll friends are really getting creative, aren’t they?

Proctor warming – looks like Joe might get Wang out of there

Will be interesting to see if Nieves and Cairo get in the game as well

  151. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 3:20 pm

BBFan–agreed. though I dont’ know that I’d want Cairo out there after his errortastic game last night. If Basak were still around I’d say toss him in there.

  152. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 3:22 pm

Yeah Joe should start to remove his starters. The game should be well in hand. Take out Jorge, Jeter, Alex, and Melky or Matsui. It think that would be the entire bench.

  153. Steve Lombardi July 8th, 2007 at 3:22 pm

It’s OK, Andrea. I’d rather people let me know, rather then to have someone posting as me – impersonating me. But, that clearly isn’t Peter posting. FWIW, these little trolls have no life.

  154. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 3:25 pm

The WAVE???? what the heck is wrong with these people!! take the wave to Shea!!

  155. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 3:25 pm

jennifer: whose the other back up infielder so we could take out jeter and arod? I’m drawing a blank…

  156. will July 8th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

Please lets see Nieves as a Defensive Replacement?

  157. BBFan July 8th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

    We have only Cairo.
    Andy is already in.

  158. Mike NYY July 8th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

jennifer: whose the other back up infielder so we could take out jeter and arod? I’m drawing a blank…

Chris Basak? He was sent down for Edwar

  159. Scott Shields for MVP July 8th, 2007 at 3:27 pm

disappointing at bat by Posada. need those extra runs. 10 run buffer is just not enough against the Angels.

  160. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 3:27 pm

    Nieves
    Cairo
    Kevin Thompson

I guess we are short an infielder.

  161. BBB July 8th, 2007 at 3:28 pm

Gotta love this offensive output before the break…let’s hope it’s foreshadowing of what the lineup will hit like in the 2nd half! ARod only 6 more homers for 500!!! Here’s hoping he will hit #600 in Yankee pinstripes too.

Time to take out Posada…why does he need to grind thru a 9 pitch AB up 10-0? Put Nieves in.

Also, my $0.02 on earlier comments about Dicey-K. He is in fact overrated, but not b/c he gave up a homer to Jeter.. because he can’t pitch from the stretch. It seems he is always doing things like walking in runs and as soon as a runner w/the ability to steal gets on, he has fits and loses the strike zone. And I think his numbers will worsen as hitters begin to figure him out more, not the other way around.

Dude why is Wang still in w/his finger probs and a 10-0 lead? It’s great he’s getting so many outs on 1 or 2 pitchers but this game is for all intents and purposes over…

  162. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 3:29 pm

Jeter coming up lame, thats why he needs to be taken out.

  163. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 3:30 pm

jennifer: ok. didn’t mean to doubt you, I just thought I was losing my mind. Throw Bruney in…let him play some 3rd base!

  164. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 3:30 pm

Jorge caught 13 innings yesterday, take the man out!! Give him a rest! drag him off the field if you have to.

  165. BBFan July 8th, 2007 at 3:31 pm

It is a nice gesture on the part of Joe to make Wang pitch the beginning of the innig so that he could get nice ovation from the fans.

  166. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 3:31 pm

Andrea, I forgot myself that Chris was sent out.

  167. BBB July 8th, 2007 at 3:32 pm

Myers in…spammit I wanted to see Edwar again. And when is the last time Bruney actually pitched?

  168. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

That whole Chris Basak thing confused me. He was only used in 2 games or so, one of which was that awfully mismanaged game in SF.

  169. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

Joe will give the guys who haven’t pitched an inning. They will have off until Thursday at least.

  170. BBFan July 8th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

Still there are two more innings.
    We will see Edwar.

  171. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 3:34 pm

There’s still time for Edwar. Myers hasn’t gotten much work lately either.

  172. Scooter July 8th, 2007 at 3:34 pm

    BBB -

Looking back 2 years ago, Wang had a big problem pitching from the stretch.

I think it’s an open question if Matsuzaka can adjust. The biggest issues seems to be:
    - command
    - # of pitches thrown, and the stress on his arm

Here’s a relatively current list of Pitcher Abuse Points:
    http://www.baseballprospectus......cid=204015

Matsuzaka leads this by a healthy margin

  173. will July 8th, 2007 at 3:35 pm

I don’t think you can pull them all, I would think you’d want to keep at least one guy on the bench in case of injury or something. I’d like to see thompson in, I like the energy and speed, and he should get some playing time, but it might make sense to get miggy back in to build some confidence back? anyway, posada should come out. no question.

  174. BBB July 8th, 2007 at 3:35 pm

I’m guessing Edwar and Bruney pitch one each. Bruney really needs to pitch, it seems like forever since he’s been out there.

  175. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 3:36 pm

“If Matsuzaka were really as good as everyone was making him out to be, that wouldn’t have happened.”

this has to be one of the craziest things i have ever read on a baseball blog.

marco scutaro has 28 career HRs and hit one off of mariano.

  176. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 3:39 pm

in 2000, when Pedro Martinez was the best pitcher in the universe, Miguel Cairo hit a HR off of him.

  177. BBB July 8th, 2007 at 3:39 pm

LMAO @ Sterling…”Thompson is caught looking, mesmerized by the breaking ball”…mesmerized? haha sheeeesh.

  178. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 3:41 pm

hmmm–I already amended my statement. It was that entire game that just gave me the impression that Dice-K was not worth the hipe, the Jeter home run just stuck out. Plus Mo has proven himself in basehball already. He can have some bad days (or months, it would seem) and he’s still Mo. Dice-K has yet to REALLY make a name for himself, aside from just all the talk.

  179. BBB July 8th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

    Scooter,
True about Wang having had similar problems. (He seems to have improved in that dept. recently and he and Posada have thrown out a few would-be basestealers lately…gotta love how focused & successful he is on making adjustments to his game.) But I digress… the only difference is that Wang at that time was not quite as highly regarded as Matsuzaka seems to be now. Maybe Dicey will improve too but I don’t remember Wang ever getting AS flummoxed as he does by speed on the basepaths. I could just be biased though.

BTW, what is Pitcher Abuse Points? Not familiar w/that stat.

  180. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 3:48 pm

How close was that fly ball A-Rod just hit to being a home run? Gameday shows it basically past the warning track.

  181. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

Where do you get this partying thing, Steve. It is irresponsible. You have no proof of this, and as i said before, if it was true, i think the ny media would be all over it.

  182. Stuart July 8th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

12 to nothing counts no more then 2 to 1. Again the Yanks cannot continue to lose close games if they have any chance to make the playoffs. they need a better pen and better small ball skills.

Interesting Cano went to left up by 10 in the game!!!!Why can’t he do it when it counts???

2 out of 3 against the angels aint bad but they had the sweep but let it go……

  183. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

Why is Jorge still there??? Come on, get him out!!

  184. Mike NYY July 8th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

Not really that close. It was to dead center though

  185. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

Why bring in Proctor? Why not bring in someone who hasn’t worked in a while?

  186. T.J. July 8th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

A shout out to the Yankee hitters today leading into the break. A positive note on what we may look like after the break.

  187. BBB July 8th, 2007 at 3:52 pm

why on god’s good green earth is Proctor pitching right now? Hasn’t he pitched enough in the 1st half?

  188. Scooter July 8th, 2007 at 3:52 pm

    BBB –

    Here’s the explanation:
    http://www.baseballprospectus......icleid=148

It’s an attempt to quantify how hard pitchers are working. It’s been around since 1998, so I wonder if there’s been studies linking abuse points to injuries

What is interesting – in that link, there’s a list from 1998 of the most abused pitchers. Among those named:
    Jaret Wright
    Jason Schmidt
    Brad Radke
    Kerry Wood
    Kevin Millwood

ALL of these guys have had serious arm injuries

  189. BBB July 8th, 2007 at 3:53 pm

srsly, does anyone even remember the last time Bruney pitched? Torre’s man crush on Proctor has now surpassed silly and is into downright ridiculous…

  190. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 3:54 pm

Mike NY: they basically show it over the wall. Damn Gameday. Trying to taunt the poor folks who can’t watch the damn game.

    Steve

Suzyn Waldman spoke to hitting coach Kevin Long yesterday (or Friday). He said that he’s had Cano come in early for extra cage work before games, and that it’s paying off.

    Sure looks like it

  192. yankee21 July 8th, 2007 at 3:57 pm

Torre needs to answer why Proctor was brought into pitch and why Posada was left into catch given the overall situation.

    Why not Edwar or Villone?

Oh, it must be that Torre thinks Proctor needs the work, don’t want him to get rusty.

  193. lilly pad July 8th, 2007 at 3:58 pm

why is proctor being used/abused again. give him a rest. sheesh.

  194. Scooter July 8th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

    BBB –

On Proctor, I have one guess – Joe wants all of his key guys to get regular work. Proctor last pitched Friday, and we’re going into the break.

Proctor’s also said that he had fixed some stuff in pen sessions. Maybe throwing in one last low-stress situation before the All Star break is a good thing

I’d expect Bruney, Villone or Ramirez in the 9th

  195. BBB July 8th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Thanks Scooter, very interesting stuff! Looks like Bartolo Colon, who was at the top of the list when the article was published in ’98, has sure lived up to their theories as well as several others on the list.

  196. T.J. July 8th, 2007 at 4:00 pm

This team has answered back to yesterday’s long game. They came back with a serious vengeance. Go Yankees

  197. T.J. July 8th, 2007 at 4:02 pm

Looks like Angels started their ASB today

  198. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 4:02 pm

Jorge has no business still being in there.

  199. TKinDC July 8th, 2007 at 4:03 pm

    WE WANT EDWAR!!!!

  200. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 4:04 pm

I wonder if Jorge and Jeter are taking Air Alex to the left coast?

Don’t forget the futures game is on espn, Joba is pitching.

  201. lilly pad July 8th, 2007 at 4:05 pm

    free edwar

  202. yankee21 July 8th, 2007 at 4:05 pm

I wonder how Nieves feels not getting a shot in this type of game and situation?

I wonder if Torre realized Posada was still in there until Posada went up to the plate to hit?

If Torre can’t trust Nieves or does’t plan on using Nieves in a game like this, why has he not been replaced?

  203. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 4:06 pm

Okay so why not move Jorge to first? This makes no sense.

  204. petey July 8th, 2007 at 4:07 pm

Wil Nieves as the new first baseman? Man talk about emphasizing “new”! I guess Posada just hasn’t sweat enough these past two days.

  205. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 4:07 pm

They joked that Jorge probably lost 5 pounds between yesterday and today.

  206. T.J. July 8th, 2007 at 4:08 pm

I wonder if Jorge and Jeter are taking Air Alex to the left coast?
LOL Jennifer. Only if they get permission from Papa Torre

Speaking of Alex he leads the league in Home runs and rbi of 88. Not too shabby for the guy and the best part he plays for the Yankees

  207. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 4:08 pm

Steve seemed to disappear when i asked him to substantiate his claim about Cano.

  208. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 4:09 pm

Joe is very lucky that Jorge didn’t get hurt. I would have driven to the stadium to yell at him.

  209. yankee21 July 8th, 2007 at 4:09 pm

I agree, Posada needs some more work, he needs to sweat some more. Good thinking by manager and coaching staff leaving him in there to wilt.

  210. T.J. July 8th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

Since Yankees have been playing well this is when Torre takes a nap. He probably has been asleep and didn’t realize Jorge was still in the game until he saw him at the mound.

  211. Andrea July 8th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

    Nieves at first. Ha.

They are definitely playing the “ok, who wants to play! who wants to play!” game.

  212. yankee21 July 8th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

Great game by Yankees, lousy game by Torre, once again the Yankees overcame two foes; the Angels and the manager.

  213. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 4:13 pm

Stop complaining, you whiners, its unbelievable, they won 10-0 and you sit here yapping about Joe like he killed somebody. He had to choose between sitting Jorge and Arod, and he choose the guy who was recently injured. Relax.

  214. yankee21 July 8th, 2007 at 4:15 pm

Not exactly Mo, why didn’t Torre find a way to rest both Arod and Posada in a blow out?

BTW, they won 12-0, before you criticize those that are pointing out some ‘curious moves’ check the difficult stats to find, like the final score.

  215. rbizzler July 8th, 2007 at 4:17 pm

Nice game today and a good way to head into the break.

FYI, the Future’s Games is on ESPN right now and Yankees hurler Joba Chamberlain is slated to pitch for the “U.S.” team in the middle innings.

  216. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 4:18 pm

Wow, so i made a typing error, woo hoo. He didnt have enough guys on the bench to do both. And do you really think they had to overcome Torre today? Ridiculous.

  217. T.J. July 8th, 2007 at 4:20 pm

Good positive game before the break. Nice way to end the half and give some hope to the team and fans. I believe! lol

  218. Stuart July 8th, 2007 at 4:21 pm

5 out 0f 7 at home against the twinkies and angels and they could have won 6 or even 7…

they have to be better in close games…. there run differential shows a team with a much better record..

fix the bench and add young guys to the pen.

adios Myers, villone, and nieves, and 2 bench guys and bring up Britton.

they can actually save a few bucks…

  219. T.J. July 8th, 2007 at 4:21 pm

I’m going to miss Pete’s post game report and his audio today.

  220. T.J. July 8th, 2007 at 4:27 pm

Tigers beat Sox 6-5. All is well

  221. 379 July 8th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

last year the yanks last game befre the all star break waz at tampa and arod let scott kazmir ride on his jet to the allstar game

  222. Stuart July 8th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

Yankees have a 70 run differential and are 1 game below 500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    That is hard to do!!!!!!!!!11

  223. YankeeJosh July 8th, 2007 at 4:34 pm

    Mo,

Catchers wear down as the season goes on, especially in August. Jorge has been catching a lot. He caught 13 innings in a day game yesterday and caught the entire game in 92 degree heat today. That is inexcuseable! There was no need for Posada to be catching in the entire game.

And the Yanks DID have enough players to get everyone a spell. Put Nieves in for Jorge after the 6th, put Cairo at Short for Jeter, and move Phillips to Third for A-Rod in the 9th. Damon moves from DH to 1B. No problem losing the DH at that point.

Jorge was the MOST important player to get a rest since you don’t get any easy games at catcher (as opposed to short or third) plus he’ll have to catch Tuesday in the All-Star game. This was a terribly managed game by Joe and I just hope it doesn’t bite this team in August.

  224. BBFan July 8th, 2007 at 4:37 pm

    Good game today.

This is where we stand now going into the break.
In the division we are 9 games behind Boston and in seoncd place (sharig with Toronto). In the WC we are 7 games behind Cleveland with four teams ahead of us.

Who would have thought we would be even be this close in both races given every thing that happened in the first half, including many injuries.

Which is easier to achieve WC or Division? I would say division as there is only one team ahead of us and we have six more games with Boston. In the WC overtaking four teams is more difficult. So, we should go after Boston.

Will it happen. I hope so. No doubt it will be challenging.
    But we need some reinforcements.
First and foremost the bench has to be improved as occasional injuries are inevitable. We need another reliable arm in the bullpen. Better option at 1B is nice, but not critical with Andy and Menky coming back soon. If Cash takes care of it, we should be OK.

    Only time will tell…..

  225. Mike S. July 8th, 2007 at 4:40 pm

12-0 and Joe still uses Proctor.

    Inexcusable.

He could have integrated Edwar more and given him an inning.

    Excuse me while I scream.

  226. As I Lay Dying July 8th, 2007 at 4:40 pm

“Wang has not given up an unearned run in his last 39 starts”

    Is this stat correct ??!!

  227. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 4:42 pm

Terribly managed is pretty strong for a game that didnt have any tactical decisions involved. People think they know more than the coaching staff, wh is in the room and can judge who needs a rest. Some of you guys seem to watch the games just to nitpick on Joe and find things wrong. Its getting a bit obscene when they dominate a game and it was “despite the manager.”

  228. Matt July 8th, 2007 at 4:45 pm

just what I was thinking Pete, they took Wang out a little early to get the bullpen some work because of the all star break, it made sense.

  229. BBFan July 8th, 2007 at 4:47 pm

What is happening is that Joe does badly in tight games and that frustration of the bloggers is carrying over into games where he does not have much control. Obviously, we do not know the reason, but on the face of it, it does not make sense that he uses Proctor today. There is no logical reason for it. Every one needs work with the break coming and Proctor was over used.

  230. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 4:49 pm

The problem with Prctor seems to be similar to an issue with Moose. If he has too much or too little rest, he isnt effective. Joe needs to find a balance, and sometimes it leads to Scott pitching in wierd spots.

  231. BBFan July 8th, 2007 at 4:50 pm

Matt, that was not real Pete!

  232. YankeeJosh July 8th, 2007 at 4:52 pm

    Mo,

Even the YES announcers, particularly Flaherty were surprised Posada stayed in the whole game. Posada may have been fine today. The Yankees did not win today’s game in spite of Torre. But they need to win 50 to 55 more games to make the playoffs.

Catching is bar none the most stressful position to play in baseball. Add to that the fact that Nieves can’t hit his weight and Jorge has been used so much this year, he needs to be rested when the chance arises.

I haven’t been one screaming for Torre’s head. But I’d like to know when it’s okay to criticize him? When they win, it’s just nitpicking. When they lose it’s piling on and why never comment when they’re winning?

I also didn’t like using Proctor today but with 3 days off, I won’t criticize the move. The bullpen handling today was fine. But not resting your second most valueable position player this year on a hot day when he caught 13 innings the day before is just a horrible move. Jorge won’t ask out of a game, Joe needs to take charge there.

  233. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 4:56 pm

I think there are times to rip Joe, ie when he left Proctor in to walk the whole Oriole roster with Mo in the pen. I just dont think this is one of them.

  234. Mo July 8th, 2007 at 4:57 pm

Not great from Joba. 1 Run on 1 walk, a SB, and an RBI ground single.

  235. YankeeJosh July 8th, 2007 at 5:00 pm

I tend to be a big picture guy. I rarely rip Joe for a move that costs us a game, though not bunting with Melky yesterday was an exception.

My biggest beefs are the early calls to the pen and the overuse of it and not resting players when the opportunity arises.

Torre has done a great job for this team for years, but I don’t see how anyone can argue that Joes has done a good job this year.

  236. BBFan July 8th, 2007 at 5:01 pm

I think criticising Joe with reasaon is OK.
Today not resting Jorge is not correct, irresepctive of what all the Joe supporters say, given it was a blow out.
I personally beleive that Joe lost it and he is not the right manager for this team any more. Some of his moves are mind boggling and with a better tactical manager, the team’s record would have been better. I understand many say it is the players. It is true to a large extent, but is the responsibility of the manager to have good sense of the pulse of the various players and use them in the right spots, esepcially in the pitching area. For me, Joe failed in that area.

  237. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 5:01 pm

pitching proctor was dumb. there is no justification for it.

but it was a great win.

the yanks took 5 of 7 from the twins and angels, while losing to Johan and a combo of Lackey, Sheilds, and K-Rod.

    not bad.

they need to keep it up.

i’d still say they are a LOOOOOONGSHOT for the playoffs, but things could pick up if Cano and Matsui keep this up. huge difference to have 5-6 guys hitting instead of 3.

  238. Anthony July 8th, 2007 at 5:02 pm

A-Rod is a lock to leave and all he realy cares about is getting paid. Cashman has stated already that he was not going to extend him as he already makes enough money.

Mike Lowell is the best FA 3B out there.

Buster Olney said earlier this season WHEN A-Rod opts out the plan is to move Robinson Cano to 3B and get another 2B.

The top of the World order again proved potent, scoring a run off U.S. righthander Joba Chamberlain. Chamberlain touched 100 mph with one of his fastballs, at least according to the stadium radar gun, which is a tick or two faster than the ESPN gun. Otherwise he was in the 95-97 range. Michael Saunders started the inning off with a walk, stole second, then scored on Chin-Lung Hu’s single (Hu’s second RBI of the game). Hu was caught stealing on the 100 mph pitch that also struck out Wladimir Balentien. Joey Votto then lined out to first.

“A-Rod is a lock to leave and all he realy cares about is getting paid. Cashman has stated already that he was not going to extend him as he already makes enough money.”

as opposed to everyone else who has ever signed with the Yankees. those guys HATE money.

    what a load of crap.

didn’t Giambi come b/c of money? Sheffield? Moose? Clemens? Pettitte? every single baseball player free agent already has more money than they could ever need. but a-rod has MORE MORE money, right?

i guess we only hold A-Rod to a different standard. he should leave $100M+ on the table, why? b/c the fans and media in NY have been so good to him? BS.

they’ve treated him like sh*t for 3 years and now that the fans are realizing how badly they need him, NOW they want him.

give me a break. he doesn’t owe NY a damn thing.

  244. BBFan July 8th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

Agree, A-Rod does not owe NY a damn thing.

However, if he is more interested in his legacy which I think he is, he will extend his contract with Yankees. He will get his money any away, for the Yanks part of it subsidized by Rangers.

  245. yankee21 July 8th, 2007 at 5:55 pm

    BFan, YankeeJosh

Well said. I appreciate your posts.

Nobody here is unjustly critisizing Torre, just questioning some curious moves. He’s getting big bucks to manage this 200 mil team, once in awhile he needs to get called on the carpet for his decisions, just like any manager. I liken the Yankees to a corporation, in my mind, he is senior management and needs to justify his moves. If he has reasons, great, let him say, if he doesn’t, then he reaffirms my steadfast belief he needs to retire.

  246. River Ave Report July 8th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

9 in the loss column, not too bad

  247. TimH July 8th, 2007 at 6:07 pm

This morning on ESPN’s “Sports Reporters”, the moderator, John Saunder in his critque at the end of the show, which was on Arod, stated that Arod and his wife were looking for a house local to NY. Wondered if anyone else saw this and if there is any substance to it. Seems the NY press surely would have picked this one up.

  248. BBFan July 8th, 2007 at 6:16 pm

Regarding A-Rod, I do beleive he will extend before opting out.

If he indeed opts out, then Yanks will lose the leverage of the Rangers contribution. In such a case, Yanks will decide to let him go instead of paying him 25-30 mil a year. With that money they will go and get two very good players for CF and 1B. The offense does not have to come 3B only.

  249. Alan July 8th, 2007 at 6:26 pm

I missed the whole game and they win 12-0 !!! I hate to admit it,,,but I think that I am the problem here…If I can just avoid all games the rest of the year, the World Series is in the bag !!

  250. Melissa NY July 8th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

    Alan,
DO NOT WATCH ANOTHER GAME IF YOU WANT TO BRING HOME #27

  251. Anthony July 8th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

A-Rod makes 27MM and gets plenty more by endorsements from playing in NY.

He is greedy…All he cares is about himself and how much money he makes. He doesn’t care about winning a WS ring. He just cares about himself and his personal stats. He was a stat padder in Texas and came here to NY trying to get on the wagon for a WS ring.

We just have to find a replacement for him.

  252. Melissa NY July 8th, 2007 at 6:30 pm

    Tim,
I read something about that in the paper (or was it online?) two or three days ago. I think its true.

  253. 2007 Yankees July 8th, 2007 at 6:35 pm

If Arod plans on staying, he will not opt out since he will be screwing the Yankees to the tune of $9-12 million a year.
He will sign an extention and save the Yankees the $27 million and take half of it back with the extention deal.

  254. hmmm July 8th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

“He doesn’t care about winning a WS ring. He just cares about himself and his personal stats.”

“He was a stat padder in Texas and came here to NY trying to get on the wagon for a WS ring.”

wow, it didn’t even take you 3 sentences to completely contradict yourself.

either he doesn’t care about a ring or he does care. you make no sense.

he was willing to forfeit money to go to boston for a chance to win.

he was willing to switch positions to come to NY.

yankee stadium is death on RH hitters.

so as a stat padder who doesn’t care about winning a ring, he would have just stayed in hitter friendly Texas.

honesly, you are embarrassing yourself. you’re coming across as, how do i say this, not so smart.

  255. Jeremy July 8th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

I wouldn’t put much faith in rumors about ARod looking for NY real estate. Even if true, he has the disposable income to buy a penthouse and flip it within a year, probably at a profit from someone who wants to live in ARod’s former apartment.

Anthony, lots of people, including Pete, have said throughout the season that ARod is replaceable. The funny thing is that no one can name this replacement. You can only “replace” ARod in that you can find someone else to play third base after he leaves.

  256. Anthony July 8th, 2007 at 6:51 pm

He comes here to NY to make money and hope on the WAGON to get a ring.

He was willing to go to Boston to PAD his stats by playing all those games at Fenway Park.

He came to NY for a chance to make more $$$.

    Get a real name…hmmm??

OK..so going into the break, 9 games back in the loss column to the BoSox and only 7 games back in the loss column to the Wild Card spot leader. I, for one, am NOT waiving the white flag…I am certain that the Yankees will get some reinforcements soon, that the law of averages will boost our record in 1 run games AND that the team will play better each series AS AN ACTUAL TEAM ! It is going to be SO nice to be IN the Playoffs AND to get a shot to knock OUT the “once every 80 years” Red Sox. GO YANKEES FOREVER….Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, ALL !!!

  261. T.J. July 8th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

“He comes here to NY to make money and hope on the WAGON to get a ring.”

The most ridiculous quote I’ve read.

Think Jeter, Posada, CLemens, Pettit, Damon are playing because they just want to have a good ole time with the boys by hooking up playing baseball? I doubt Jeter or any of those guys would be still playing for under the money their agents agreed for. I would be willing to bet if Cashman tells Jeter they are cutting his salary to the salary you make a year man Jeter will take his talents to the Red Sox.

Dude are you for real? Do you work for free? Man you have a man crush on A-Rod or you just feel the need to vent because the man wouldn’t spread his wealth with you?

Who doesn’t want to win a ring. Why do you think The Rocket came back at this high salary the Yankees are paying him for. Who doesn’t play for money and a ring. Whoever says he’s playing for money do you think other players are playing for free? Think both Rocket and Pettit would come back to New York just to play for peanuts. When Rocket had his big lost a week ago, people were calling for his head and questioning the money Yankees brought him i

I wish people would get off the man’s jock strap. Barry Bonds is playing in San Fran and has been accused of being more of a jerk than Alex but yet the fans want him there and accept him. That team isn’t going anywhere and neither is Barry. The way the media and some fans are treating Alex and his family, why would you stay? Sometimes I think the media is so obsessed with this man they pay people to follow him around so if and when he does decide to leave they can use him as a scapegoat for the Yankees not winning a World Series.

He has money. Why could he not want to win a ring? The way the fans have question Jeter’s playing lately I would not doubt if Jeter turns down an interview with the media. They would turn you against him too. Then you will be calling for the man who has helped keep Yankees a threat and run him out of town.

  262. T.J. July 8th, 2007 at 7:21 pm

Why is there a fake Peter poster? Lol! Don’t they know by now we know how Pete comments. I guess taking advantage of Petes’ off time. Sweet!

Speaking of father/son baseball players. I was just trying to explain to a co-worker the beef with Cecil Fielder and his son Prince. Prince’s, by the way is having a pretty good season so far.

  268. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

Yes it was fun, would have been better had we won. I didn’t stick out the entire game though. I was there since 11:30. I got to watch Whitey, Sparky, Krazy Kyle, Torre, Jorge and Kei drive in. Whitey got a nice hand and he waved. I was kinda shocked at some of the cars they drove in. Nothing I would consider too fancy. Espcially Kyle and Sparkys trucks.

It was very nice watching the intros, and seeing Bobby there, and Scottie and Paulie come back for the first time. The game was a nail bitter, I only wish we were on the winning side. I ended up bailing early, got out of the lot in 5 minutes flat First time ever!! I normally don’t leave early, but seeing as it was going to extras and I had plans, I really didn’t have a choice.

At least they ended the first half on a nice note.

  269. Dr. Acula July 8th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

I think cash will offer ARod an extension and he stays.

This isn’t about next season’s coin, it’s about stackin nuts for winter.

And while we’re at it, we outta lock up Rocket. He’s 45 going on 25.

Talk ’bout a dream team: Wang, Hughes, Rocket, Santana, Andy.

Sounds like you had a good time. I enjoy watching the men from years back. Some of the greats and legends. I think I get more joy just listening and reading about those guys. It’s an honor just to see them make an appearance. I had the pleasure of meeting some of my favorite non Yankee players, Cal Ripken Jr. and Nolan Ryan. I guess they are both considered semi old timers. LOL!

It would be great joy to sit and talk with Yogi.

Man Boston is collapsing, only 10 games out. 8.5 in the WC. Seemingly the division will be easier because there is only one team to pass, guess that makes sense. Manny is having a bad year, that keeps up and Ortiz will not get too many good pitches to hit anymore. The rest of the lineup is eh. The pitching staff is Beckett, Okajima and Papelbon, the rest are not anything special. This Boston team is not that good.

Next 29 games are all against subpar to bad teams (including the unfinished game against Bal which should be a win). The Yankees need to get fat here, if we can get Hughes back for 7/25, then we only have two more Igawa starts. Anyway if we go 22-7 in those games, that will leave us at 64-50. Then the future is all ours.

    Jen-

can you pick out your seats in this “picture”:http://tinyurl.com/3adarb

    ???

think it was hot yesterday, it was worse today, and according to the national weather service, the sun will briefly touch Astoria tomorrow

y mañana noche: “The Bronx is Burning” 10:00 PM

I was in the upper deck behind homeplate. Thankfully we had shade for most of the game.

“Anyway if we go 22-7 in those games, that will leave us at 64-50. Then the future is all ours.”

which is probably going to happen, seeing as how they handled the giants and orioles.

    er…wait…

    Jen-

Gawd, it musta been hot in the upper deck.

my bad, it’s Gayle who’s seats are in Matsui Central.

Somebody at ESPN didn’t get the talking points. The anchors just bustin’ on Boston, saying they got the best record at the all-star break, but the last time that happened was 1978, “and we know what happened in 1978.” And they chuckled to boot!!

  277. jennifer July 8th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

It wasn’t too bad once the sun went behind the stadium. I pitty the people who sat in the wings of the upper deck. They were stuck in the sun all day long!!

Midsummer report: Mussina, a younger and better version of Moyer

He lost his 91-92 fastballs, probably for good.

He is evolving from a semi-power to a crafty pitcher. Location and changing-speed are key to his success. In the last month, I saw a very impressive transition. He surely will be around much longer.

Torre, who is heavily in favor of fastball pitchers, might want to learn how to appreciate a crafty pitcher, such as resting him for 5 days not 9 days.

Midsummer report: Clemens, from a power to a contact pitcher

He used to throw fastballs up and down, in and out.

He is resorted to 86 splitters and occasional 91 fastballs. His splitters are just as effective as Wang’s sinkers- many groundouts, low K’s, and pitching deep. His execution is even better (less BB).

His transition is even more impressive than Mussina’s. If indeed this is his last season, I will watch his every second-half pitch in worship. It is this much of effort put into the game by the player that makes baseball fun to watch.

  280. jamesjk July 8th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

Midsummer report: Wang, sinkers at less perfect

All pitchers have to be in a perfect physical condition to be effective.

His finger won’t heal in a short time.

We will find out soon enough if he is an exception in the history of baseball.

  281. tonyb July 8th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

Dude, you are so lame. Please go away. As soon as Peter gets back he’s just going to ban you’re IP address. So pointless and disrespectful.

It is time to return to the teachings of civics and ethics in US schools.

Acula those are EXACTLY where my seats are nice photo. My seats are second row (the row above where the security guy with the shades is standing) He is the regular usher there and a really nice guy As Jennifer said yesterday was very hot and a VERY long day arrived at the stadium at 1PM. Left in the 8th as I had reservations on Arthur Avenue (would highly recommend that as a palce to go after the game)

Griffey Sr never saw him again after he was announced not exactly sure what he did. The greatest pleasure I got was watching BP and seeing some of the younger guys hitting HR and the reaction to Broscious and O’Neil was amazing. I tell you and I know how popular he is but Donnie Baseball got the biggest. No matter what his next position is it will be a very hard spot for Steinbrenner to do anything against him.

However the most joy I got was watching my uncle who had never been to the stadium get tears in his eyes as he watched some of his favortie players be announced and come on the field. I am only 41 so for me some of the real old timers are just names but I have no memories of them playing but for him it was as if his whole youth wre in his eyes. It is a shame that the Yankees are the only team that still has an Old Timers game as it really does give fans the chance to relive their youth.
