Today is the only day of the year where there are no major sporting events, so pretty much anything is news.
Even the idea that the Yankees want to keep Alex Rodriguez.
Really, they want to keep their best player? Shocking. They might give their best player a contract extension? Wow.
Brian Cashman, as he always does, left himself with plenty of wiggle room during spring training when he said he did not anticipate the team would not negotiate any of its free agents. Well, nobody anticipated Alex having one of the best seasons in history and improving his defense at 3B so dramatically.
Plus why would anybody complain?
For this to make any sense for the Yankees, it has to be an extension of the deal A-Rod already has, not a new contract. Otherwise they lose the subsidy from Texas.
The Yankees have the YES Network to accomodate and a new stadium to fill. They need superstar players, whether it’s Alex or somebody else.
Just don’t expect Scott Boras to make this easy. One way or another, his star client will use that option to make more money. Either via an extension from the Yanks or via free agency. There is no chance A-Rod will just stay put under the terms of the original deal.
