Back from home, back on the beat
Just got home from spending a few days with my family. My nephew Jason turned 2 on Tuesday and he seemed to have a blast. He got some drums, a Tonka truck, assorted other toys and a new swingset, so life is good for the J-Man.
That’s him in the photo. He’s the best.
Then on Wednesday I went to Plimouth Plantation with my niece, Leah. She’s going to be 7 in a few weeks and in my unbiased opinion is the smartest soon-to-be second grader ever.
As for those Yankees, here are a few stats that caught my eye:
Upward trends
Hideki Matsui: 6-game hit streak (8 of 22) with three homers and 7 RBI.
Robinson Cano: 10 of his last 26 with three homers and 7 RBI
Melky Cabrera: 8-game hit streak, 15 of 37.
Andy Phillips: 6-game hit streak, 10 of 22
Ron Villone: 9.1 1 0 0 1 6 over last seven outings
Sparky Proctor: 6 1 0 0 2 7 over last five outings.
Downward trends
Andy Petttitte: 6.2 19 16 15 1 6 last two outings
Johnny Damon: One extra-base hit and one RBI since June 26.
Wil Nieves: 53 plate appearances for the season, he’s been on base 8 times.
Finally two links of interest for you:
Brian Bruney visited some kids at a camp and we here at the blog applaud such good deeds.
I also received an e-mail from The Museum of the City of New York about their exhibition The Glory Days: New York Baseball 1947-1957.
It looks like a very worthwhile exhibition and I plan to check it out myself when I get a chance.
Headed down to Tampa this morning. I’ll blog at you from the Trop later on.

That baseball exhibition sounds great, wished I still lived in NY to be able to check it out. Cool blog on Bruney as well. Thanks for the info Pete.
Pete, when’s your birthday?
« This just in: The Yankees like A-Rod…….this just in…Mr. Pete is a Smarty Pants…(joke) Pete..your nephew is a KEEPER….Your Blog is awesome…and until it is mathematically over….YANKEES 101-61, win the division and SHOCK THE WORLD with title number 27 !!!
Brian Bruney is such a great guy. That was a very nice of him to do. I hope more players get involved in camps and others like that.
Your nephew is such a cutie!! I bet it was a blast to spend time with him.
As for the Yankees..if Cano keeps it up he’ll be back to his numbers last year in no time. I totally agree with you Alan, the yankees are going to shock the world and i cant wait.
From my childhood, I remember four toys. My sister’s Barbie, my Ninja Turtle, my Shredder truck (from Ninja Turtles), and my big Yellow Tonka Truck.
Tonka Trucks are definitely the most awesome toys ever.
(You might be wondering what my sister’s barbie got to do with this: Ninja Turtle had a lot of fun saving her from Shredder and then getting rewarded with action with her behind the couch.)
God, I wish I were two again. Those were the glory days. Nothing to worry about but circles blocks and playdough.
:first time blogger, long time reader:
Keep up the good work. I look forward to reading your blog during each game.
Pete, sounds like your batteries are recharged and you enjoyed the time with the kids. They’re the best!!
Hey Pete, I’d like to take this opportunity to officially apologize for the sucky weather here in Plymouth this week. Brutal humidty and not nearly as much sun as there should be. Hope you made it to the beach one day.
Pete, your nephew looks adorable. Tell the truth, Did his Uncle Pete give him the drums?????
(In my experience, parents NEVER give their own kids noisy toys!
)
Here’s hoping the All-Star break gave Damon’s body a chance to rest and heal up some. Personally, I think he needs to regrow some of that hair.
I like to hear about it when players do a good turn. It always sounds like they enjoy doing it, too.
The J-Man’s gonna steal some hearts. Ladies, watch out!
Nieves trends downward and can’t hit?????
NO WAY!
How cute! Congrats Pete you have a adorable nephew.
not sure i’d characterize nieves and damon’s performances as downward trends. they’ve been terrible all year.
Thanks for linking the Bruney article.
You are truly a class act.
A standing O for Brian Bruney, Andy Phillips and Kevin Thompson. May they be rewarded for their efforts.
