Abreu seems to be the key

Peter Abraham

Bobby Abreu in wins: .381 with five homers, 43 runs scored and 35 RBI.

Bobby Abreu in losses: .154 with one homer, 15 runs scored and nine RBI.

“We play at a very high level when Bobby plays well, Alex Rodriguez said. “Bobby’s going to have a big second half; I feel it.

Joe Torre on the win: “I feel good about our club as far as temperature of it and the mood that we’re in. We played a clean game, that’s the most important thing coming into the second half. That and understanding this is it for us. We’re going to have to win a good number of the games in the second half if we expect to be where we want to be.”

Sorry, no audio tonight. Time’s a wasting in Tampa.

    I still don’t get it. Yeah Alex sees more pitches when Abreu is hot, hitting well and taking BB’s. But he still is very good witout him. I don’t get how Abreu can make such a big diference in a club. It’s amazing, we just need these guy to heat up like last year and the Yanks can go on a run.

    But it seems that every time he gets hot and Torre moves him to the three hole, he diews out after a couple of games and the offense quickly goes with him. Are the Yanks really so dependent on a guy that’s been trash for most of the year?

    Posada is having a career year, Jeter an absolutely awesome year and A-Rod a historic year. But do we really have to rely on Abreu getting hot?

    Man it scares me to put on the marbles on him, but it seems if he gets hot so does the team.

    canofcorn do me a favor go on a 10 week vavcation and leave us alone..

    thanks..

    i think Stuart mentioned this in the game thread, but Brett Gardner got called up from AA to AAA tonight. He doesn’t hit for power, but he was tearing up AA after an injury and a poor start:

    AA, 2007:
    AVG/ OBP/ SLG
    .300/.392/.419
    and 18 for 22 in SB. he’s fast and gets on base.

    *hopefully* he’ll tear up AAA and we’ll see him soon in the bronx

    Couldn’t this be just the other way around – in games that the Yankees win, Abreu is hot, in games they lose – he’s not? But not that the Yanks win because of him. It’s him being hot because the Yankees win. I’m sure one can find a few guys that go 0-fer in losses and are hot in wins, no?

  5. joe monte

    Ian kennedy had another good performance tonight in trenton / AA ball. When do realistically expect him to make the majors? Throw him and jaba in the bullpen for home stretch.

  6. TigersFan

    I doubt you can write off the Yankees yet.

    They spent $210 million dollars (much of it generated on local broadcasting revenue that they basically steal from other teams because of a weak US Congress) – and they play poor underfunded teams more than 1/2 of the remainder of the season.

    It would take a total incompetent job by Torre/Cashman not to make the playoffs.

    Of course, I said that before and they managed to find a way to

    1) lose to a team that had never made the World Series (2002);

    2) lose to a team with 1/4 the payroll (2003);

    3) lose to a team by blowing a 3-0 lead (2004);

    4) lose to a team that hadn’t had a winning season in 13 years and had 1/3 of the payroll;

    So who knows? They have proven the depths of their incompetency many times before.

  7. MattNC

    canofcorn, would you do us all a favor?

    Take the gas pipe.

    You have apparently forgotten not only 1978 (14 game comeback to break Boston’s heart and win the WS), but 1995 as well (when the Yankees, still under .500 in late August, won 27 of their final 33 to claim the wild card).

    Take the gas pipe.

    TigersFan, you are the very definition of a pathetic loser. You somehow have time and concern to go on a Yankees blog hosted by a small, regional newspaper, and try to make yourself feel better by whizzing in other people’s Cheerios. And, to make matters worse, you’re a fan of one of the worst baseball teams of the last two decades.

    G.A.R.E., which stands for Get A Real Existence. The day I seek out Tigers blogs to taunt their fans is the day I start looking for a new direction in life.

    Wow, lots of losing in that link. Now go dodge some gunshots like a good boy.

  9. E-ROC

    I kinda disagree, sort of. Yeah, he does see pitches and works the count to allow A-Rod and whoever else to look at what the pitcher throws from the batter’s box. But we should take into account that Damon and Cano aren’t play to the back of their baseball cards. Also, Giambi isn’t here. He does give us a pulse.

  10. Dr. Acula

    TigersFan-

    you stuck your pine-tar covered finger right on the target. We win cuz of TV dollars.

    yes, that’s why we won all those championships in the 20s, 30s, 40s, and pre-cable 60s and 70s.

    you’re just jealous cuz our fans are smokin’ hot.

  11. Vermilion

    its cause Abreu hits when the rest of the team is hitting. Its not like its him alone changing things.

  12. SnoopDog

    TigerFan,

    Dogs please. You are loser who doesn’t know anything about baseball. Go away before u make yourself look even dumber.

  13. xryanx

    There is no doubt in my mind that Abreu is the real catalyst to the Yankee offense. I’ve been saying that as Abreu goes, the Yankees go for a while now.

  14. E-ROC

    TigerFan,

    WOW, it’s amazing how many non-Yankee fans come of the woodwork when the Yankees aren’t doing so well. I guess your hatred for the Yankees run deep. Thank you for making your presence known. It is greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, if and when your team gets to the World Series:

    1)try not to choke

    2)try to field your position

    3)try not to let a rookie beat you who in following season is 0-10 with a 6.40 ERA.

    Good day.
