Update on Giambi (sort of)

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 13, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

A lot of people have been e-mailing and posting wondering about Jason Giambi’s status.

Here is what we know:

Giambi is out of the walking boot he was in and was scheduled to have an MRI. If the torn plantar fascia tissue in his foot was healing, he would then start a more aggressive rehab program.

No word on if that MRI was taken. But once Giambi starts baseball activities, it will take him a few weeks get ready to play again. So the earliest we could see him is sometime in August.

I can report with better detail that Doug Mientkiewicz is working out in Tampa, taking tennis balls off the bat as he starts to get his wrist in working order. Darrell Rasner is also there and is close to starting a throwing program.

Mientkiewicz is convinced he will be ready to play in early August. Whether that is a positive sign is up for debate.

Honestly, I don’t want him back he clogs up the bases

  2. sunny615 July 13th, 2007 at 1:33 pm

His defense has been an asset… his offense… not so much.

If Phillips can put up almost DM’s defense and almost Phelps’ offense… I’d stick with him until [hope] Tex arrives at the end of July [/hope].

  3. Dave July 13th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

The problem is that the wrist will not be ready to generate any power. As that was already a problem for him, I don’t think he will really be able to contribute. Lets all hope that Philips can put up decent numbers, as he has since his gaining the full time job.

  4. Bill July 13th, 2007 at 1:40 pm

We all know the Yanks will pick up somebody at 1B in the next two weeks.

  5. sunny615 July 13th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

Let’s all hope that it’s *NOT* Shea Hillenbrand

  6. Gibb July 13th, 2007 at 1:48 pm

    coooome onnnn shelley duncan

  7. mike f July 13th, 2007 at 1:56 pm

andy has been doing a pretty terrific job at first..at least so far. why not keep him until we see if it’s necessary to hire a big gun like tex. we should wait and get him as a free agent anyway, not as a rental

  8. Kevin M. July 13th, 2007 at 2:19 pm

I don’t know that the Yanks will pick up a first basemen. Let’s leave Phillips there until Giambi comes back…he’s doing a great job and could easily post an OPS of .800 this year. He’s about 1000X a better option than Hillebrand.

  9. kasey July 13th, 2007 at 2:20 pm

giambi’s OBP might help the team, but then where do you put damon? back in center? no thanks.

mientkiewicz shouldn’t play again this year. maybe as a late-inning defensive guy.

  10. Kevin M. July 13th, 2007 at 2:20 pm

And if Damon can’t remember how to hit let’s bring up S. Duncan to at least DH against left handers.

  11. Mike S. July 13th, 2007 at 2:23 pm

Forget Shelley Duncan at 1b. If he could field, he’d be here already.

He strictly DHs. That’s how the Yanks look at him.

Think of Shelley as this year’s Mitch Jones. You remember Mitch Jones numbers at Columbus, don’t you?

  12. bleeckerandsullivan.com July 13th, 2007 at 2:35 pm

Right now, i dont think 1st base is the problem. Find a young pitching arm, and dump Moose, please! i love what he has done in the past for us, but that is not now..

  13. Yanks fan in Cincy July 13th, 2007 at 2:41 pm

whats the update on Pavano? No really i’m serious…(not really) Who would we give up for Tex? I know, A-rod for Tex and Blaylock, that would kill two birds with one stone

  14. chris in fairfield July 13th, 2007 at 2:41 pm

where will damon play once and if giambi cames back ? if the yanks some how come back into contention does torre plug in dougie m and giambi and ruin the chi of the team ( like last year during the playoffs ) ? mark tiexiera , dimitri young , euribiel durazo , and shea hillenbrand have all been rumored firstbase trades for the yanks . is first base the main concern or is the bullpen the main concern ?

  15. Global Warming July 13th, 2007 at 2:45 pm

5/10 player. He’s not going anywhere.

As for 1st base, I agree with another. Stay away from Shea Hillenbrand, he’s garbage.

I’d rather stay with Phillips/Cairo and that speaks volumes.

Dreaming for a bit but if we can deal Cano and 2 or 3 other big prospects(not Joba or Hughes) for Teixera, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Probably not possible without either Chamberlain or Hughes but it’s nice to dream with an outrageous trade once in awhile.

Speaking of Outrageous, you know what would be really helpful? Jeter moving to 1B next year. It would extend his career in pinstripes, fix a hole on this team, and get his horrible range out of SS. Then you can you sign Eckstein for SS or hey, even move Alex to Short.

OK enough dreaming, I need more coffee ;)

  16. E-ROC July 13th, 2007 at 2:46 pm

Whatever happened to Erubial Durazo & Dan Johnson??

  17. Bill July 13th, 2007 at 2:52 pm

I never want Eckstein even touching the pinstripes with his fingers. Ever.

  18. Adam July 13th, 2007 at 2:53 pm

Dan Johnson plays for the Oakland A’s. Erubiel Durazo plays in the Mexican League.

  19. E-ROC July 13th, 2007 at 2:56 pm

    Adam,

We were interested in trading for Dan Johnson and signing Durazo. I know a trade wasn’t imminent but I thought the signing of Durazo was.

  20. Basura July 13th, 2007 at 3:02 pm

You don’t want Giambi clogging up the bases? You’ll never have that problem with Cairo/Phillips since they don’t get on too often.

  21. EdFl July 13th, 2007 at 3:03 pm

The Yankees signed a player from Cuba over the winter, Juan Miranda. He now plays at Trenton. He hits well but strikes out about once every 4.1 at bat. Any comment on his potential as a major leaguer? He is a first baseman.

  22. Steve Dvorak July 13th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

A bit off the subject here, sorry, but I know music is discussed here sometimes; What song is usually played before Jeter’s at-bats? Anyone?

  23. mel July 13th, 2007 at 3:10 pm

    Steve,

Currently it’s ‘I’m a Flirt’. He seems to have an affinity for R. Kelly. Go to Wikipedia & look for entrance music.

Alex’s is currently ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go?” by the Clash.

  24. Global Warming July 13th, 2007 at 3:14 pm

    That’s funny.

  25. chris in fairfield July 13th, 2007 at 3:15 pm

mark tiexiera has another year and a half left on his contract . so who do you give up to get him ? again i say – lets ride out some of these bad contracts . i know most if not all of these contracts are unmovable but you gotta try . 20 million for ichiro is a joke and what does that make a-rod ? 35 mill ? i can see a-rods days in new york are numbered .

  26. mike f July 13th, 2007 at 3:19 pm

hey basura, phillips is hitting .310 with and on base % of .381 for your information

  27. mel July 13th, 2007 at 3:20 pm

    “It’s always tease, tease, tease”

  28. Whoa July 13th, 2007 at 3:22 pm

Andy Phillips is better than Mientkiewicz.

Good luck, Doug, but stay away from the Yankees roster until 3007.

  29. Mike S. July 13th, 2007 at 3:22 pm

    “We”? No to Durazo.

Miranda has been very average so far. .273-11-62 total. That’s just A/AA ball. Lefty hitter, numbers OK, but not special, and he is two steps down right now.

As for Johnson, he’s a lefty hitter who averages out to .257-17-65.

“Find” a young arm? We have them. They are at Trenton. You’ll just have to wait a year or two.

  30. mel July 13th, 2007 at 3:23 pm

    Whoa,

That’s funny. Ace of the staff will be Clemens and Mo will still be the closer.

  31. Steve Dvorak July 13th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

Mel, Funny and thanks. I’m thinking of something else though, a song he had for most of the first half of this year.

Anyhow, I say Yanks gotta get Hunter in CF next year. Matsui in LF, Melky in RF. Platoon the beat-up Damon & Giambi at DH. Keep A-Rod at all costs.

  32. mel July 13th, 2007 at 3:27 pm

First half was another R. Kelly song, “That’s That” ft. Snoop

  33. felipe from Brazil July 13th, 2007 at 3:30 pm

plain and simple: minky is a better player than shea (which VORP’s really sucks by the way)… So save some bucks stick with philips for a while and then bring back minky… if it’s the case.

Oh and please…let’s stop talk about teixeira… his one & half year contract doesn’t worth any considerable trade even more with players named Robinson Cano in the middle.

  34. mel July 13th, 2007 at 3:30 pm

Anyone going to watch Hughes @ Trenton? Torre said as soon as he’s healthy he’s going straight into the rotation. I guess the kid gloves are off.

  35. Doreen July 13th, 2007 at 3:40 pm

    Mel –

I’m thinking of going his second start next Wednesday. He’s only going to pitch 3 innings at most tonight.

  36. mel July 13th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

    Doreen,

Lucky you. Did we ever find out why he’s going twice at Trenton? Will he skip AAA or make a 4th rehab start?

  37. Doreen July 13th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

    Mel –

Also, in this morning’s paper (Star Ledger), they said on Wednesday, it will be four innings or 60 pitches. Thunders manager, Tony Franklin was quoted: “There’s no sense in letting him go out there and overdo it. This is not his final stop. There’s a final stop, and they’re gradually trying to get him there.”

So, yes, when he’s healthy, he’ll go into the Yankees rotation, but they will take their time getting him there.

  38. dontfirecash July 13th, 2007 at 3:44 pm

Hughes tonight, Joba tommorow, Horne on Sunday….The future is now.

  39. Doreen July 13th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

    Mel –

Same article. Said after the second Trenton start he will make at least one start in Scranton. Then they’ll make an assessment and if he’s back in “pre-injury form,” he’ll be back in rotation for NY.

  40. Doreen July 13th, 2007 at 3:46 pm

    Also, Hughes was quoted:

“That’s what I’m hoping, but it all depends on how I feel and my velocity, how I’m getting off the mound with my leg.”

  41. mel July 13th, 2007 at 3:51 pm

Thanks,Doreen. Gotta go. When I get back, I hope to find the Yankees in control of the game.

  42. pat July 13th, 2007 at 3:54 pm

Sheffield shooting from the lip again today. Says Yankees management and particularly Joe Torre treats black players differently. When asked if Joe treated Jeter differently he said no because he’s half white. The man can hit but has no future at the UN after baseball.

  43. Matthew July 13th, 2007 at 3:57 pm

I’m wondering who will get the other start on the 21st, the yanks have a doubleheader and neither Karstens nor Hughes will be ready. Anyone have any idea who they will use here?

  44. Kate July 13th, 2007 at 4:03 pm

It’s been a long week and you had me fooled with the entrance music for A Rod. Thinking, “wait, I’m a big Clash fan and I *never* heard that!” Funny.
For those who actually want to know:
Alex Rodriguez, New York Yankees: “This Is Why I’m Hot”, MIMS; “The Way I Live”, Baby Boy Da Prince

Saw Hughes pitch last year at Trenton and it was a treat.
I need to get down there to see some of the other kids, though.

  45. Doreen July 13th, 2007 at 4:24 pm

    Pat –

And did they ask him how he treated Bernie, who Joe Torre absolutely loves?

Wish Sheff would just go away. It’s no longer any of his business.

  46. Joeysdadjoe July 13th, 2007 at 4:38 pm

When/If Jason comes back he DHs.Maybe he plays some first maybe Damon plays some first.Melky needs to play CF now. Those of you who claim Jason clogs the bases youre right but the idea is to hit with RISP and unclog them.Give me nine Giambis in the lineup(offense only)and Ill win the pennant every time.

  47. zachy July 13th, 2007 at 4:39 pm

the lineup is smoother without him. His OBP means nothing if he can’t score from second on a single.

  48. The Count of Montefusco July 13th, 2007 at 4:42 pm

Doug Mientkievicz is a good baseball player.

In addition to grit and postseason success, he’s a clubhouse security blanket for our neurotic third baseman. I realize none of this means much to the Rotisserie-minded here…but shouldn’t the fact that he is a PLUS-PLUS defender?

The Yankees are not going to find a better glove to put at 1B this year — and anyone looking to solve this season by plugging a Big Bat into 1B is missing the point. If Cano, Mastui, Abreu & Damon don’t step it up, it just doesn’t matter.

  49. zachy July 13th, 2007 at 4:43 pm

you have hit twice w/ RISP to get him around. worthless.

  50. Alan July 13th, 2007 at 4:43 pm

Sheffield really needs to shut his mouth. WHO CARES WHAT HE SAYS ???….If he thought being black was hurting him with the Yankees, why didn’t he just quit the team, tell them that they can KEEP THEIR MILLIONS OF DOLLARS and take his OH SO HIGHEST of principals, ethics and morals and find another job, say in the Clergy ?

  51. Global Warming July 13th, 2007 at 4:59 pm

I would rather have a healthy Giambi DHing than Damon easily.

I don’t know what Damons deal is. Is he playing hurt? If so, go on the DL and let Shelly Duncan mash. Stop with the ego, your hurting the team! Get healed up and come back strong.

This team is lacking power, Giambi would be a huge upgrade to this team. Why are people saying we are better off without him? Am I the only one seeing this team consistently struggle to score runs?

    Late August Lineup-
    CF Melky S
    SS Jeter R
    RF Abreu L
    3B A-Rod R
    LF Matsui L
    C Posada S
    DH Giambi L
    2B Cano L
    1B Phillips R

Damon can either be some sort of super utility. 1B, 4th OF, and occasional DH.

  52. gayle July 13th, 2007 at 5:13 pm

Our long national nightmare is allegedly over according to espn Giambi has met with Mitchell. This is supposed to be a big deal with the steroid thing right?? I am not holding my breath.

  53. will July 13th, 2007 at 5:13 pm

    agreed
    Center Field- Melky > Damon
    1b- Menky > Phillips > Giambi > Damon
    DH- Giambi > Damon.

If Giambi comes back, damon really should go on the dl, or into a pinch hit/run, 4th outfield role.
It’s already been said, but we’ve got the bats in the lineup, even now, to go on a huge run, they’re just sleeping. maybe they need to watch major league, and get jobu helping them out or something.

The thing i’m really hoping is that if they go on a big run and make the post season, that the lineup doesn’t get shaken up from whatever it was that made the run. it killed us last year, and hopefully that won’t happen again.

  54. NYY July 13th, 2007 at 5:30 pm

The yankees are hottest team right now in Baseball over the last 10 games. The Tampa Devil Rays are the worst team. Roger Clemens is going to kill the devil rays today and Yanks Offense will slaughter Kazmir and Tampa Bullpen is beyond awful. I predict a 10-0 win for the yanks today.

  55. NYY July 13th, 2007 at 5:31 pm

And what is the Deal with Sheffield. Can’t he keep his mouth shut.

  56. Dr. Acula July 13th, 2007 at 5:36 pm

I like signs (bird on a wire like omens, not the virgin mary in a waffle stuff).

Rocket and Hughes both starting on the same nite. Gammons says Hughes looks like the 1984 Clemens.

  57. Alan July 13th, 2007 at 5:39 pm

NYY…agreed..Yankees 10-0 today…and sweep the Rays….on our way to a 10-12 game winning streak to start the 2nd half !

  58. Dr. Acula July 13th, 2007 at 5:47 pm

    Pat-

did sheffield really say (in so many words) Jetes ain’t black enough?

As to Joe, I’m not a Torre fan, but any new yawker knows about Torre’s close relationship with Bob Gibson.

    what a maroon.

  59. DesignatedBlogger July 13th, 2007 at 5:52 pm

I just heard on the radio that Giambi met with George Mitchell today. Wonder what he told him.

  60. jennifer July 13th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

Sheff wonders why everyone is against him, maybe it is because he is always popping off at the mouth?

  61. Steve Dvorak July 13th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

I don’t care what his numbers are, I’m glad Shef is gone. The guy is a total d*#%.

    So next year’s rotation? –

    Wang
    Pettitte
    Hughes
    Karsten
    Mussina

There are basically no FA pitchers aside from Zambrano who should probably stay with the Cubs or at least stay in the NL cuz he LOVES to hit.

  62. Chris NY July 13th, 2007 at 6:03 pm

Sheffield is the poster boy for the “everyone is against me” movement. I was the same way, …when I was thirteen.

  63. Josh July 13th, 2007 at 6:06 pm

Ughh Abreu out of lineup. Thompson in.. not good

  64. Alan July 13th, 2007 at 6:10 pm

    josh,,,where do u see that ?

  65. Mike July 13th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

Yahoo reports Thompson is in RF tonight. Why give Abreu off after a long break anyway in addition to his solid performance last night?

  66. Josh July 13th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

Yahoo posted the line-up already. Cano is out also. Thompson in, and Cairo in also.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270713130

  67. Josh July 13th, 2007 at 6:13 pm

Torre is giving Kazmir way to much credit by stacking the line-up with right handed bats. Kazmir isn’t that dominating.

  68. seek nay July 13th, 2007 at 6:14 pm

Kazmir’s been tough on lefties. I’m sure we’ll see the both of them once they get to the bullpen if needed.

  69. Alan July 13th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

Unless Abreu is hurt,,,there is NO REASON not to play him today…..that is a JOKE !

  70. Josh July 13th, 2007 at 6:16 pm

We don’t pay him 10+ million to sit on the bench versus Lefties. Bonehead decision.

  71. Alan July 13th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

OH yES…Take out Cano and Abreu and put in Cairo and Thompson…THAT IS THE VERY BEST TEAM YOU CAN PUT ON THE FIELD…..This is just plain GOOFY !

  72. DesignatedBlogger July 13th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

It doesn’t matter who is in the lineup. They don’t score for Clemens anyway.

  73. Chris NY July 13th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

Great, 2 guys coming out of slumps and let’s take them out of the lineup for a guy we’ve handled before? Don’t like this one….. maybe I will in a couple hours, let’s hope.

  74. jennifer July 13th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

Because he is facing a tough lefty maybe?
