Game 91: Blue Jays at Yankees

Peter Abraham
July
16

Here is the lineup:

YANKEES
Damon DH
Jeter SS
Abeu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Posada C
Cano 2B
Phillips 1B
Cabrera CF
Igawa LHP (2-2, 7.14)

Pregame chatter: The Yankees will be facing Josh Towers (4-5, 5.07). … A-Rod’s first at-bat will be interesting. This is the first time he has faced the Blue Jays since the incident in May when he distracted Howie Clark.

Check out the Baseline Report, a new web site from Mike Pagliarulo and Adam White. Pagliarulo is involved in scouting and evaluation.

Here is their analysis of Brian Cashman.

UPDATE, 11:50 p.m.: Sorry for the lack of updates tonight, I had the night off and hung out with some friends.

Meanwhile, please do not post as other people. This means you, Kyle Farnsworth.

Also, a word of advice to the clown who keeps sending comments insulting me. They’re getting stuck in the spam filter and I suspect your bosses at Rockefeller Financial Services probably figure you could use company time better. Be a man and e-mail be directly.

Peter…in this instance, can Torre go to the umpire and tell him that he thinks that they are going to throw at A-Rod, so that IF it happens like that, then the pitcher can be thrown out immediately ? I have seen umps throw a guy out before, without any warnings, and they have said just that ( “I Knew he was going to throw at him” ) What are your thoughts ???

  2. Chris Serico

    Igawa? Egad!

  3. DesignatedBlogger

Villone and Myers are already warming up.

  4. JFud25

At least we will get a chance to see Edwar pitch tonight.

  5. JFud25

Most likely in the 3rd inning.

  6. Doreen

    Talk about scathing.

  7. Joey_V

Abreu recently started hitting again. So Torre moves him to the 3 spot. Yesterday, Abreu goes 0-5. Why bat him third when he was doing well batting in the 7 spot? I don’t like the move and would rather see Jeter batting third and Cabrera batting second.

As far as Damon, he should be on a short leash because time is running out and the team can’t keep him in the lineup when he unproductive. The guy’s obviously injured and his numbers show it.

  8. by request

Let’s hope its “Night of the Iguana”!!

Wouldn’t it be great if the whole stadium went “HOOP” everytime a Yankee popped up?

  9. phee

Pags should stick to what he’s good at. Hitting .217 and growing his pornstache.

  10. saucy

pags needs to get a real website. myspace doesn’t cut it. (especially since myspace is blocked from work)

  11. Joe from Long Island

In regards to the Pags-report on Cash – “scathing”, as Doreen said (I assume she was referring to this), but a lot of truth. However, I wonder how the report would have read if Damon, Abreu, Cano, Giambi, Viz, etc., had played as many thought they were going to, and the injuries to Karsten, Rasner, Hughes, and other starters who lost a couple of turns early on – if all that hadn’t had happened. Yes, one can legitimately criticize for lack of depth, but who has that much depth? Even throwing in the results of relying on Pavano, Igawa, and Farnsy, I think anyone’s assessment of Cash’s work would be different if the above calamities hadn’t occurred. But that’s just my opinion.

At the end of the day, results matter. Sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than good. Being lucky makes you look good.

  12. JeffG

    Joey_V,
Abreu went 0-5, but he smashed two balls to the deepest part of the park possible where they could still be caught. His stroke was fine.

Cabrera does not have the plate discipline to be a top of the order guy. Yet.

  13. chris in fairfield

i see pete’s line-up has melky and matsui playing left field . i would assume that melky’s in center , damon is dh’ing and matsui is in left . no worries , i’m king of the typo . i hope the b.j.’s throw at a-rod , i love old time baseball . put arod on his ass and after they really piss arod off he puts a couple in the seats .

  14. Larry

I love how the Boston media is trying to make pushes for A-Rod…no one in Boston wants him…just trying to hike up the price.

    Bush leaguers.

  15. Drew

I’ve already got Breach in the DVD player ready to go.

  16. Vinny

Seems like Pags ripped Cashmoney a new one with his analysis. I tend to agree with him though. Getting mediocre picthing that may or may not ever be fruitful, for 2 potential HOF’ers, still makes little sense to me. I liked Sheff’s bat and thought RJ was still better than Mussina for his 2 years here. Bad back or no bad back, he went out and pitched and didn’t moan when he was doing poorly. hesucked it up and tried again next time. Can’t ever say he had Pavano syndrome. At least he tried. 34 wins weren’t too shabby from my viewpoint. But it was RJ’s choice to go.

I do blame Cash for getting rid of Sheff when he knew his lineup was not anywhere near as potent without Sheff here. It was being penny wise and dollar foolish at the time and still is. There are always injuries to contend with.
For all that’s said about him, when Sheff had his contract straight, he performed as well as Abreu if not better and was more consistant, for less money.
His fielding wasn’t as bad either or at least not as bad as it was made out to be. How’d they like to have Sheff as the DH now ????

The Igawa signing has to be motivated by things other than playing baseball because if it’s not or wasn’t, Cash deserves to be let go for this one alone. For 46 million dollars, he could have rebuilt half the team with much better results.

  17. Joe

    Joey V,
Were you complaining about Abreu batting 3rd on Saturday night, when he hit a HR and drove in 5 runs?

  18. DesignatedBlogger

You never know, Igawa is due for a decent game. Maybe he’ll surprise us.

I’m really interested in the Jays treatment of ARod. I think he’ll be thrown at. It could turn out to be a wild game.

As for Pags, it’s hard to argue with him. The Yanks don’t have much to show for Sheff and Randy, and Mussina is having a bad year. BUT, the Yanks had to sign Moose, it wasn’t a bad move (well, maybe the second year was a bad decision). He had a good year last season and they needed pitching. But I wouldn’t mind if they dump him on someone else this trade deadline.

  19. Bronx

I enjoyed watching Pagliarulo when he was a Yankee, but he is way off the mark. He does not consider what the realistic alternatives were.

Should the Yankees have used Sheffield at first base? Let him go as a FA? How is the trade they made any worse than those options?

How can Cashman be wrong for not having pitching depth and for signing Pettitte? Who were the available pitchers that would have made more sense?

At age 43, Randy Johnson showed no sign that he would pitch better than his 5.00 ERA of 2006. How was that going to help win a Championship?

  20. Drew

The Sheff deal will all depend on Humberto Sanchez’s health and Kevin Whelan’s development. I don’t care how great of a year Sheff is having. I’m glad he’s gone.

  21. murphydog

    I checked out Pags’ GM ratings. I think somebody screwed up his math. If you assign numerical values to the letter grades given (A = 4.0, A+ = 4.5, a B = 3, B- and a C+ being the same = 2.5, a C = 2, C- and D+ = 1.5, D = 1 and an F = 0.0) Theo and Cash grade out much closer than a full grade apart. But then again, math wasn’t my strong suit so maybe it’s me.

  22. Joe from Long Island

Guys, let’s not forget that we probably wouldn’t have won the division without Bobby Abreu last year. He hit .330 after coming here, with OBP around .400, if I remember correctly. His slump in the first half of this season is a big reason why we’re where we are, but that was unforseeable. It was his performance last year that made Sheff expendable, because Sheff had no position. I don’t remember anyone predicting that Giambi would be on the DL. Whether the return on Sheff’s deal was worthwhile, we will only know in another two years or so.

As far as RJ – I came to the conclusion after the playoffs last year that we simply had to get better starting pitching. Moose had become a 4th – which he is playing up to this year, and RJ was too old and broken down. How many games has he won for Arizona this year – 3? He’s on the DL now for the 3rd time, and who knows when, if ever, he will successfully pitch again. But he’s still getting his boatload of $, and even if the return on him doesn’t pan out to any great shakes, Cash is not paying the 16M owed to RJ for the next however many years, someone else is.

Subsequently, Andy Pettitte has done reasonably well as a frontline starter. The problems were Pavano and Igawa, and Cash has rightly been criticized for those moves (though, again, other teams were also after Pavs two years ago – would Detroit have won the AL last year if they had won the Carlapallooza sweepstakes instead?)

So criticize Cash when it is deserved, and unfortunately some of the moves haven’t worked out (an understatement) and he deserves criticism. Just don’t pile on.

  23. Hawk

I love how the Boston media is trying to make pushes for A-Rod…no one in Boston wants him…just trying to hike up the price

Every Boston fan I know, and believe me, I’m surrounded by them hardcore, want him on the team, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about here.

  24. skisan

People (Pags included) seem to forget that Sheffield had no position, and said he wanted a new contract if the Yanks wanted him to play 1st base (a real team player, that Sheff). I give Cashman a B on that trade just for getting something for that malcontent. Also, how can he kill him for the Randy trade? He’s on the DL. If he’d kept him, Pags would presumably rip him for a lack of depth in the starting rotation. Pags appears to be as good at grading GMs as he was at hitting major league pitching.

  25. Doreen

    Joe from Long Island -

Yes, I was referring to the report. And I am in agreement with you regarding the performance or, rather, non-performance, of the players you mentioned. If even just Damon, Abreu and Cano performed as expected, things would look a lot different.

As for those who say, Sheff could have DH’d — the problem was Cashman knew Giambi could no longer play 1st base and Sheffield flat out said he WOULD NOT play 1st base. Giambi’s contract was not expendable; Sheffield’s was. Sometimes it’s just numbers. And the Yankees’ offense was brilliant last year without Sheffield or Matsui in the lineup for a very extended period of time.

Johnson would not have been pitching for us this year, even if he were retained. He’s just no longer healthy. I still say, regardless of how the prospects do, this move was a no-brainer.

Igawa – well, for the longest time I was giving Cashman the benefit of the doubt, but I don’t think a sane person can any longer.

And the only thing I really fault Cashman for was the entire 1B fiasco, and not giving Torre a solid bench. I do agree that injuries to Damon and Giambi could probably have been foreseen — not the severity, but certainly that they were more likely to occur than to not occur. I still wish Damon had gone on the DL earlier in the season. Right now he seems healthy, but not in a groove yet, hitting-wise.

In the beginning of the season, Cash was being hailed for finally starting to get the Yankees minor league system back where it should always have been. He gambled, and probably lost, that the major league team could hold its own for one year. I say the jury is still out, but he was neither as bad as this report says, nor as good as I wish he was.

  26. Matthew

Well, trying to be optimistic, Josh Towers stinks, Yanks should light him up and be able to cover Igawa. And being even more optimistic, at least we won’t have to watch him in those dopey sunglasses tonight. Makes it maybe just a little more watchable.

  27. murphydog

And another thing, out of fairness to both Theo and Cash, as a general rule I wonder how many scouts think that GMs know better than the scouts. Suffice to say that there’s a reason Cash and Theo are GMs and Pags is a scout.

I could quibble with some of the crystal balling done on prospect evals by Messrs. Pags and White, but what the heck. Cashman haters will find support in the Baseline Report and Cashman supporters will see another know-it-all who thinks they could do a better job. And so it goes…

  28. Ken

That was an awful analysis, Shef obviously hates Torre, and Randy Johnson hated pitching in NY. I like both of them, but you needed to get rid of them. Jared Wright was a no brainer as well get something for the cost of the opt-out. All 3 of those cannot get less than a B grade.

Josh Phelps cost nothing (as they said) and Andy wasn’t there to take the at-bats anyway.

Pettite is one year deal (with player options makes 2,) where else are you going to get 1-3 starting pitcher for short term deal.

The Rocket, over priced but what were your other options?

Kei Igawa, ok he deserves the F here, but, he wasn’t the only willing to put up that kind of money. Still, bad signing.

So in the end the got something for nothing (shef, RJ, J. Wright) and signed 2 top 3 starters for short term deals. How does that result in most GM? Just the mere fact that he has signing Villone as the “best” thing Cashman did losses a lot of credit with me.

  29. Mike S.

I would have liked to have seen Pags’ take on the pitching prospects that are at Trenton, as well as Hughes, Karstens, McCutcheon, etc.

  30. crawdaddy

    Peter,
I’ve read past reports that Pags did some work for the Yankees when it comes to scouting, but Cashman stopped it which might skewed Pags ratings of Cashman.

  31. Kevin

It’s amazing how stupid former players are about the game on the whole.

  32. YankeesLuv

The Jays players are fools if they try to hit Arod. They should get over it already.

  33. Todd

I agree that Pags comes across as a wannabe talk radio hothead. Telling are his comments on the RJ deal — you had to factor in the back surgery to what the Yankees were going to be able to get for him. He simply isn’t the RJ of 4-5 years ago — you just hope some of the prospects turn into something. He wouldn’t be helping this team from the DL

  34. Andrew

Pags immediately forgets that Cashman paid NONE of Sheff’s or Randy’s contract. Getting rid of Randy’s $16 million for 7 starts on the year deserves a solid “B” in my book just based on that fact alone.

This year’s offseason will start to look much, much better down the road, which is exactly Cashman’s plan. Theo’s will start to look much, much worse as Lugo and Drew start sucking up payroll.

I don’t disagree, using complete 20/20 hindsight to THIS MOMENT, that Cashman deserves a bad grade for performance UP TO THIS POINT. But, most of the offseason is up in the air. That’s the thing about prospects. Also, if Vizcaino can continue what he’s been doing since June (1.39 ERA), and the Yankees can resign him for cheap (he’s only 31), then the Randy deal starts to look even better than a B.

You can rip on Cashman all you want, but he’s basically committed to rebuilding this team while making it still a contender. If the Yankees are in the playoff hunt come September, Cashman deserves a hell of a lot more credit than what he’s getting. Please point me to a team that has rebuilt AND contended in the same year. Hint, it ain’t the reigning third-place Red Sox.

  35. Joe L

Pags has an agenda here guys. He’s a scout, but he’s also looking to break into the GM world. What scout isn’t. What better way than to be a somewhat fondly remembered ex-Yankee bashing the current Yankee GM who is on the hot seat.

That post reeks more of a “what would you do differently” job interview question and maybe he’s hoping if Cash gets tossed, he can at least get in the door and take a shot at interviewing for the head or asst. GM job.

Trading Johnson was a coup considering we have healthy players in return for a guy who is shot.

Trading Sheff was barely a trade. The only reason we got anything for him was because Sheff negotiated an awful deal with Steinbrenner that gave us the option of keeping him another season. The only reason the option was picked up was to trade him. If he were a free agent, we would have let him walk and NO ONE would have complained about it based on how Abreu played last season. I think trading Sheff was a brilliant stroke, personallly. It was an opportunity to pick up an option on a asset that was leaving and get some players in return.

No one would have traded top prospects for Sheff after last season. No one.

The only thing I can knock Cash on in the above 2 trades was not forcing the Unit to San Diego who were talking about moving Linebrink (who we desperately need this season) and Kouzmanoff (who also would be valuable at 1b and 3b this season). He shouldn’t have let RJ dictate that he go back to AZ and told him it was SD or another year in NY.

As for depending on Pavano and Igawa — sheer stupidity and he really cannot defend himself at all. I’d take Ted Lilly or Gil Meche over Igawa in a heartbeat and both guys were gettable this off season — esepcially Lilly who was begging to put on pinstripes again.

If Cash loses his job because of that grave error in judgement, he can’t defend himself really. This was his team this year and he screwed up royally depending on those 2 pitchers to be part of the starting 5.

While I like him and hope he doesn’t get canned (because I do think he can learn from his mistakes this season), I also wouldn’t be against seeing a different GM steer the ship in the future.

He made his own bed this season and Igawa and Pavano are tough to come back from.

If Igawa somehow pans out to be useful, he can save some face…but I think Igawa will be pitching in Colorado (or somewhere) next season with the Yankees paying the bill.

  36. Andrew

Oh, I’m wrong. Vizcaino is 32 going on 33. But he’s proven to be a workhorse and has given great bullpen performance since June 1st: 19.2 IP, 1.37 ERA, 19 K, 11 BB (this is bad, but he still has a 1.22 WHIP). I noticed that during this time his velocity has been low nineties instead of the high eighties it had been when he flat-out sucked. If he keeps his velocity, his slider looks a whole lot better and he will do well. Let’s just hope Torre doesn’t run him into the ground again.

  37. Alan

    Pitching matchup
NYY: LHP Kei Igawa (2-2, 7.14 ERA)
Igawa is holding opponents to a .363 average at Yankee Stadium.

DIRECT from Mlb.com….Igawa is HOLDING OPPONENTS to ONLY a .363 avg at Yankee Stadium…….HOLDING ????

  38. Doreen

    Alan –

Good catch! Must be boilerplate language. Heaven help us if he wasn’t holding them right there!

  39. Bob from NJ

Terrible analysis by Pags – trying to be sensational and get noticed, I guess.

The most glaring problem with his analysis is the fact that he decided not to rate the draft picks during the Cashman era or the international signings, either out of bias or ignorance. Cashman has excelled in this area and his philosophy of overpaying for top notch talent in the draft and in Latin America will reap dividends in the years to come.

As for his analysis of trades/free agent signings, he clearly suffers from a bad case of hindsight bias. The only move by Cash that is really poor is the Igawa signing and the non moves have hurt us as well – the decision to not shore up the bench and the bullpen has proven costly.

  40. rbizzler

Pags is an idiot wannabe GM (great ’stache though). Most telling is his analysis of the RJ and Sheff deals which he bases strictly off of hyperbole. The fact that Sheff is “feared” and that both of them are future Hall of Famers means absolutely nothing. The Sheff “fear” factor didn’t mean jack last year when he was on the DL and Abreu effectively filled his spot. As for RJ, he ASKED for the trade, has been injured all year and may never pitch again because of his back. Tough to fault Cash for either of those deals. Igawa is another story.

And Wright for Britton gets a “C”?! What a joke.

  41. Doreen

    rbizzler –

Unfortunately, many people conveniently forget that RJ asked for the trade.

  42. yankee21

Cashman deserves harsh criticism for the following:

    1. Signing Igawa- incredible bad move
    2. Not finding a suitable back-up for Posada
    3. Endorsing Torre (alleged)
    4. Relying on Pavano

Other than these moves, I cannot fault him. I like his work with the drafting philosophy and so far I like his reluctance to overpay for a quick fix to a 2007 team that has plenty of holes.

Give him 2 more years, and if the ship doesn’t come in by then, he needs to be out the door.

  43. CB

Mark Shapiro has to be one of the best GM’s in all of baseball. His ability to stock Cleveland with talent year after year and sign young players to long term contracts is remarkable. This is what he had to say about Cashman:

“He recognized a few years ago the need to fortify his system and has taken advantage of every opportunity possible to infuse talent into it, Cleveland Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro said.

“The system is now one of the stronger ones in the minor leagues, and at some point, as those players become major-league-ready, the Yankees will have the most deadly combination of depth of young talent combined with elite payroll resources at the major league level.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07.....f=baseball

Now Shapiro may have been playing nice in public but Cashman is widely respected throughout baseball. One of the reasons why Steinbrenner gave Cashman complete control of the organization was because he knew if Cash left he’d have his pick of GM jobs and would have a new position within 10 minutes.

Pags clearly has an agenda and an ax to grind. He’s trying to be controversial to get a better job or to move over to the media side of things a la Steve Phillips.

Here’s a good line, “When healthy in 2006, Johnson gave the Yankees their best chance of having a dominating start. He was their only starter who cold slot into a championship template.

He’s clearly never heard of Chien Ming Wang and he clearly didn’t watch any of the games the past two years, particularly in the playoffs.

Pags writing isn’t even analysis and for many of the players he talks about it seems like he’s not even familiar with who they are.

Take Humberto Sanchez: “he is a big boy with a soft body and prior to his surgery he projected as a possible middle starter at the ML level….

That is just ridiculous. Sanchez pitched in the Futures Game last year! The Futures Game!! You don’t pitch in the futures game if you only project, “as a possible middle starter. He was widely regarded as a Top 50 type prospect. Look to see how many pitching prospects at his level are traded each year. They are the rarest commodity in all of baseball bar none and to get one in a trade is very difficult. Yes he had arm trouble but in the age of outlandish long term pitching contracts that turn out to be busts getting a player of Sanchez’s upside is only possible if there is some risk involved.

How is the Randy Johnson deal even still being discussed – it was a huge winner just by dumping his salary. He’s been on the DL three times this season already – $16 million and on the DL three times and is only happy because he’s at home and got a two year extension (I can’t even imagine what they were thinking).

You can’t have it both ways. You can’t continuously say that you’re sick of seeing the Giambi’s and the Damon’s of the world break down and still criticize moves to get younger players.

Young players have risks. That’s it. That’s just the way it is by definition. They don’t have track records to fall back on. At the same time the only other option is to keep on trotting out older guys who have not worked for this team at all over the past 7 years.

  44. Ranting Guy

In the earlier post Pete mentioned “Krazy Kyle has put 60 men on base in 37.1 innings.

Quick, trade him to Boston for prospects so he can be one of the set up men for the Papelboner. Offer to pay the rest of his contract too. Think about it … the Yanks signed him to pitch for the Yanks, right? If we need to put him in a Boston uniform to do it, then so be it.

Up in Boston they’re still not onto the fact that Mike Timlin is one of NY’s favorite batting practice pitchers. The fans have been onto him for a while, but from Terry Francona on up the Sox haven’t figured it out yet. Timlin & Kyle would be NY’s 26th & 27th men.

Hopefully NY won’t sign Timlin like they did our last favorite Fenway BP pitcher … Mike Myers.

  45. BBFan

For every decision maker, there will be successes and failures. No one will have perfect record.

On the whole, Cashman’s decisions are better for the Yankees. Even Shef and RJ trades will be better for the yankess in the long run. Evaluate them a couple of years from now. Instant gratification is not the answer.

  46. Brad

When is Igawa sunglasses night scheduled as a promo at the Stadium ? Hopefully when there’s inermittent showers during the game so he can look extra ridiculous.

  47. SJ44

Pags had his Yankee Japanese scouting deal cancelled by Cashman when he got full control of the organization.

Might that make him a bit emotional when it comes to his “analysis” of the job Cashman has done? Just sayin’….

As far as the deals are concerned, Sheffield didn’t want to play first base with the Yankees. It was the only position available to him. Giambi was the DH, he can’t play first anymore, and Abreu was set in RF.

Second guessing the results, after the season is halfway gone, is not really “analysis”, is it? Its second guessing the results after the results are in. If Bobby Abreu was hitting like he was last year, nobody would be second guessing that deal.

Randy Johnson’s back is shot. He can’t even pitch for the Diamondbacks. Imagine if he was on the DL in NY, and the Yankees had to cover his 16 million dollar contract? How can anybody with any knowledge of baseball question trading him? Makes no sense to me.

Those deals will be judged on the success or failure of the prospects involved in the deals. Neither one of those deals were made for this year so, IMO, coming up with an instant analysis of those deals is foolhardy at best.

Wanna complain about Igawa? Legitimate complaint.

Wanna complain about the lack of a bench or Cashman’s excessive optimism when it came to believing in Carl Pavano? Legitimate complaint.

However, its pretty tough to rip him over Sheffield and Johnson when one guy can’t pitch and the other guy didn’t want to be here. Not much leverage when you have those situations.

As far as his overall “grade”, shouldn’t one look at the ENTIRE body of his work before assessing a grade?

If you are just going to go month by month, then a lot of GM’s would have failing grades. Just not how the biz works, IMO.

  48. Andrea

Drew: I’ve been saying that about Sheff all season. He could hit 90 home runs and steal 280 bases and I’d still be glad he’s gone.

  49. Drive 4-5

I agreed with Pags on every one of his grades. Humberto Sanchez was supposed to be the best prospect we received and it turns out that Cashman knew there were health questions.

I don’t purport to be an expert, but every scout who saw Igawa pitch said he was a fifth starter at best. How could Cashman commit $46 mil to such a player after getting burned by Pavano? An incredibly stupid move.

Cashman was here for the championship years but didn’t learn that the Yankees always had a game changing threat on their bench. As well as Miguel Cairo has played, he’s their closest thing to a threat…and obody is scared of Miggy. Having Wil Nieves as the backup catcher can only be described as emabarrasing.

In ‘06 he made some nice pickups, but in ‘07 Cashman deserves an F.

  50. Thermos

That’s some “analysis”, and a mighty professional website as well. I liked Pags as a ballplayer. Let’s hope for his sake that he doesn’t quit his day job…or that this isn’t his day job.

  51. Doreen

    Drive 4-5 -

Cashman also described Igawa as a 4-5 starter, definitely back of the rotation, or a possible long relief guy. There was NEVER any indication that Igawa was supposed to be anything else. So Cashman did not disagree with the scouts. Unfortunately, Igawa has not been even as good as a 4-5, but, again, no one ever expected more.

  52. CB

If it wasn’t for Cashman Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain wouldn’t be Yankees.

He was the one who committed to developing young pitchers, he put Oppenheimer in charge of the draft and he made Nardi Contreras in charge of pitching development.

  53. 2007 Yankees

Giving GM mid-season grades is all well and fine but you really need to do this at the END of the season. Then you can decide if things worked out like he thought they would.

  54. Yankee Boy

Welcome back SJ44 — the king of common sense!

  55. Christy from New Orleans

    Hey Pete,
Just out of curiousity what’s the deal w/ Carl Pavano?

Can you believe I actually had to sit & try to remember his name? Good Lord..

    -Christy

  56. Mike NYY

Pavano is getting TJ surgey right?

  57. SJ44

After watching the four games in Tampa, one thing I can say about the Yankees. They aren’t quitting. They are playing hard every night, even if some guys (Farnsworth, for one) can drive you nuts.

They may not play well all the time but, the effort is there.

I was at the ballpark over two hours before gametime every day and I saw a bunch of guys there early for BP, for pitching work (Clemens and Pettitte, especially), and the dugout was alive with emotion each night. If these guys didn’t care, they wouldn’t be putting in the extra time.

Hey, I realize its been a bad year so far and a lot of things haven’t gone well. But, Torre is telling the truth when he says the effort is there with the team.

We just have to hope the results improve for this year. For the future? I am much more bullish on the future of the Yankees than I am about this season. I think the future is real bright for the Yankees, even if this year is a struggle.

  58. ben from boston

alan i was just thinking the exact same thing that you posted. dont you think that a bean brawl could pump the hell out of this team? and thats kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. but only if its a boring game. if towers is smart hell wait until the second atbat

  59. ben from boston

andrea i just read your comment. i may be jewish but AMEN. once again wise beyond your years

  60. SnoopDog

    Pavano is a ******

Roger Clemens, Chen Ming Wang,Phil Hughes will be major pieces to the Yankee’s comeback

Joba Chamberlain will be here mid season 2008

The yankees will make a run at the east. (However, Winning the division is another story.)

Farwworthless is as good as gone.

  61. ben from boston

snoop sorry to break it to you but the al east IS the division…

  62. BBFan

“The bullpen is an especially big headache, because Joe Torre is a lousy manager of relievers and tends to pick one or two favorites and ride them until they melt into a big puddle of goo.”

This is what Keith Law wrote on ESPN Insider about Yankees.

For a change, what he wrote about Yankees in his article was quite realistic.

  63. Rocco

i’m not going to watch the first inning. AFK bathroom.

  64. ben from boston

im so happy its back at home. NO MORE FSN FLORIDA! YAY!!!

  65. Rocco

hey ben… entourage sucked last night.

  66. Andrea

ben: I thought Jews said Amen too…I was at a wedding celebration at my friend’s house in France (I know, I’m a freak) and they said Amen. I think they were speaking Hebrew the whole time, but I don’t know Hebrew OR French, so I really can’t be 100% sure. But, either way, I’ll take the AMEN.

My brother, in exchange for cleaning his disgusting excuse for a living space, gave me monetary compensation and offered me an autograph. I wanted A-Rod, as he is my boyfriend. He offered me A-Rod alone, or a picture of Sheff, A-Rod and Jeter. I sacrificed a possible Jeter autograph because the thought of having Gary Freaking Sheffield on my wall angered me.

I think that’s where I’m NOT wise beyond my years. How old are you, if I may ask?

  67. Joey_V

Jeff G – I appreciate the comments as I didn’t watch the game on TV.

As far as Cabrera, he’s been hitting well in the two spot. In July, his average batting 2nd is .378 or 14 hits in 37 ABs. The one time he hit 9th he went 2-4. Batting 1st or 6th, he went 2-8. Therefore, he’s showing discipline by getting on base and producing runs.

On July 1, he was batting .259 with .320 OBP. Presently he stands at .274 and .330 OBP. I think hitting ahead of Jeter is helping him see better pitches, thus improving his performance. Thus I like seeing him that spot which allows Jeter to drive in runs.

  68. ben from boston

NO NO NO rocco dont tell me i havent seen it. saying it sucked doesnt care just no details lol.

This is from the analysis of cashman:
    * 1/5/07: Signed Doug Mientkiewicz to 1-yr/$1.5M deal C

    17 runs, 4 hrs, 16 rbis, .226 BA

o Mientkiewicz is a good backup player or pinch hitter on a championship team. However, with the Yankees, he was signed to play almost every day. Though he has no offense left (remember when he was 14th in AL MVP voting in 2001?), his defensive ability can serve a great purpose in the playoffs. However, it’s NOT the way to get to the post season. Championship first basemen need the stick, not leather.

The last line is either wicked stupid or i was asleep when dougie won a CHAMPIONSHIP with the sox…

  69. Andrea

Rocco–entourage did kind of suck last night. I’m somewhat disappointed with this season. Maybe this is the “lets get through this season to get to the events that will be fun to watch but if we do that now it’ll be too inconsistent” season.

  70. ben from boston

    lol andrea nice research

  71. Dave

That analysis was actually being nice – i would give cash an F. Almost every move he has made has been detrimental to the team minus acquiring britton for wright. If u couldnt see this grade coming from a mile away u were being naive. Cash is also responsible for acquiring farnsworthless and I have to believe he had some say in getting pavano and wright. Cashman has the most leeway and payroll of any GM in the majors – two yrs ago and what does he do? Absolutely nothing to improve the team and actually makes them worse. I love how that analysis says absolutely nothing about the fact that not only did he trade sheff for nothing usefull now or possibly ever. But also he traded sheff to the best team in the AL – and it was known this off season that with one more big bat detroit would look incredibly. Good job cash! Not only did u weaken the yanks but u helped the team that knocked us out of the playoffs tremendously and they didnt even have to give us something useful – we could have asked for mike maroth or even a decent proven starter with all of their pitching – they gave away maroth for a player to be named later a couple of weeks ago. They wouldnt have given us him for a number three or four hitter.

  72. Mike NYY

The last line is either wicked stupid or i was asleep when dougie won a CHAMPIONSHIP with the sox…

The commisioner cancelled the 2004 season after game 3 of the ALCS remember?

  73. ben from boston

lol ANDREA ROCCO!!! POSITIVE! that includes entourage too. and andrea i think im so loyal to entourage its like my baby even if it did suck i wouldnt be able to see it

  74. Andrea

Bobby Abreu got a haircut. Why does this somehow make me like him a little bit more? He doesn’t look as old and bushy.

  75. Rocco

    Andrea

I liked the columbia episode but yeah the rest of it kind of sucked. Cannes should be fun if they do an ep there.

  76. ben from boston

mike that better be a lie because i have taken way tooo much for that. i keep saying you didnt win kenny lofton lost it but they tell me “dave roberts” and some other filth flarm filth.

  77. We want Tim Redding

Gabbard of Red xoS is perfect through one!

  78. Joey_V

Joe – I’m not “complaining” about a thing. I’ve made an observation that Abreu has been more successful recently batting 7th. On the same hand the Yankees have been winning with him batting 7th.

Coincidently, since July 1, he went 15 for 31 or .483 in that spot. In the two games he’s batted 3rd during July, he’s hitting .200 or 2 for 10. As far as his 5 RBIs on Saturday, that’s what he’s paid to do. BTW, that was his best RBI production in a game this season. Last season he had a couple of games where he drove in 5 and 7 respectively.

I hope that I’m wrong about Abreu and that he begins to play the way he’s capable of playing while batting 3rd. But most importantly, is that the team win regardless of the lineup.

  79. Andrea

I agree–the stuff with Columbia was good. I’m going to shut up about Entourage though so that ben doesn’t get upset.

Igawa’s not doing that badly. Maybe this is the game where he shows us that he figured it all out!

  80. scott s.

    @Alan I saw that…lmao

  81. Andrea

    I typed too soon.

  82. Alan

scott s…..you liked that, huh ???

  83. ben from boston

lol andrea its fine as long as you dont say oh in this one vinny dies. and give something away. my dad took aaway my hbo. but at school next year we get it so im happy. but we do get nesn i was hoping because its closer to ny wed get yes

  84. ben from boston

i wish kei was good then we could make signs like: k (backwards) igawa

  85. Alan

My, Oh, My…the K-Man Mows down Frank Thomas ! if he can keep this up for 6 more innings….I will EAT ALL OF MY WORDS…..( alas, but would we ALL like a repeat of this inning ?…retire 2, give up a hit, walk one, then a K ? ) I am going for the Pepto right now, just to be safe (wink)

  86. ben from boston

or make “kei” signs with a big K for every strikeout

  87. kidjock

That analysis is not fair, Clemens and Pettite have been given zero run support. Viz has been overworked, and it was obvious to everyone Sheff was going to be traded so they could not have gotten a better deal. Cash gets a C at least, you cannot assume injuries would hit the Yankees to the extent they have this season.

  88. Dave

the analsysis also says incredibly well why the yanks minor league system would have been one of the best without any of cashmans supposed “building up the farm system.” Hughes, chamberlain, Clippard, Betances, Cox, Melancon, Marquez and many other very high caliber pitchers were in the farm before last off season started.

  89. ben from boston

i found a clinical study online. heres a direct quote:

“Despite all of the work the yankees have done to prevent drug usage, the placement of igawa and farnsworth in games has launched the use of illegal drugs ten-fold in the greater Manhattan area”

  90. jennifer

Good evening everyone!! Miss me?? :)

    here’s to a Yankee win!!

  91. TKinDC

I think that Cash thought that this year was going to go well enough to avoid any pressure. He is playing the long game (also known as the game that can get your rear fired in the short term)

The rash of hammy pulls at the start of the year aside, there were obvious holes on the club coming into the year at 1B, bench, and 4 and 5 in the rotation. These have not (ahem) turned out well. (Captain Obvious strikes again)

But the long term is pretty darn rosy with Hughes, Chamberlain, et al. I don’t see great position players yet but I didn’t know that Sori and Cano would turn out like they did. Right now I would give Cash a C+ and keep him, but I hope that he is an A+ by 2009.

Welcome back SJ – good to see you here and glad to hear the lads are fighting/working hard in Tampa!!!

  92. Alan

Man…Glaus is like a jackrabbit out there with his reflexes !!!

  93. Rocco

    welcome back jennifer

  94. Alan

well, if Bobby works a walk..I would LOVE to see them plunk A-Rod and load the bases !!!

  95. ben from boston

    jennifer where have you been!!!

  96. Andrea

    clinical study–nice

Ben–where are you going to school? I went to college right near the border of NY and MA, and there were more Sox fans than yankees fans. It was rough. And I was there in 2004.

  97. Andrea

Jennifer–you seem like the type to join our optimism club. we’re being optimistic about every play, every game, every series.

  98. jennifer

Can they stop talking about the HA thing!! Come on. It is old news!

  99. Dave

Why do any of the GMs around the league become free agents. I wouldnt mind seeing what guys like Bean or even minaya would do with a 200 + million dollar payroll

  100. TKinDC

    How many runs win this game – - – I say 7!

  101. mel

    Jennifer,

Did you call Michael Kay on the Dan Patrick show? There was a Jennifer from New York.

  102. Mike

At some point Mr. Torre has to acknowledge how crippling it is to have a .244 hitter batting leadoff.

  103. jennifer

I was down in LBI all weekend. Got myself a nice tan. :D It was beautiful this weekend.

Sure I’ll join the optimism club.

  104. jennifer

Nope that wasn’t me. I’m not the type to call. I might threaten it, but wouldn’t do it.

  105. Bryan

    Bryan is back everyone!!!!!

  106. Global Warming

At some point Mr Cashman needs to put that 240 hitter(Career Low OPS also) on the DL.

Bring up Shelly Duncan and let him DH.

By the way, I miss not not having to listen to Michael Kay. Took it for granted in that TB series.

  107. Alan

like I said…the plunking would have been better there….(wink)….Well, I don’t think he is out of the woods yet, as I would not be surprised IF given a better opportunity, that A-Rod gets some Chin Music before all is said and done tonight……( STORY at 11 ! )

  108. jennifer

okay Andrea I know I said i’d join the optimism club. but I think I might already be out of it. Can you find something optimistic about Kei’s pitching preformance so far?

  109. Dave K

All I got is the fact he pitched a scoreless first

  110. Mike NYY

Can you find something optimistic about Kei’s pitching preformance so far?

He has a 0.00 ERA for this game, has struck out a batter an inning, and is set up for an inning ending DP

Now is that optimism or what :D

  111. Alan

is it ME ? or does the K-Man look a little FIRED UP ???

  112. TKinDC

Jenn – 46.2 innings pitched, no broken bones or torn muscles.

    Optimism LIVES!

  113. Rocco

    and has a few K’s

  114. Alan

Optomism…NOT ONE SINGLE Blue Jay has advanced past 2nd base in this ENTIRE GAME !!!!

  115. jennifer

Okay I found something 3 strike outs.

  116. ben from boston

yea jennifer its really great we only speak positively! im going to roger williams in bristol, RI. it should be a good time. at least there were some yanks fans there at my high school it was acceptable to be gay (the way it should be) so “coming out of the closet” was announcing youre a yanks fan haha. there we 10 people “out” in a grade of 400-500

  117. Dave K

    Cumulatively, we’re pretty optimistic

  118. Mike NYY

He`s still getting paid less money per SO than Carl Pavano :D

  119. Andrea

Mike and TKinDC–that’s what I’m talking about!

The good thing about Igawa today: he’s not wearing those goofy sunglasses. I can only see that as a good thing.

I won’t say anything else because I have a habit of jinxing.

  120. ben from boston

hey the yanks havent lost yet thats optimism

  121. jennifer

One of my friends had tickets to tonights game and she gave them away because she couldn’t bear to watch Kei pitch. LOL

  122. ben from boston

andrea you do its scary predict something good for the jays!

  123. ben from boston

hahah i yealled “AH” at my computer and he whiffed

  124. Andrea

Alan–I was thinking that. But again, I’m a jinxer. Good thing I didn’t type it or I’d feel bad now.

ben–RI is definitely Sox land. That’s a lot worse than where I was–up near Albany.

  125. Mike

    Um…

I think Igawa freaks out when there’s a baserunner on second or third. A walk directly after someone got on second base.

  126. Mike NYY

Igawa still has averaged less than 20 pitches per inning

  127. Alan

I am positive that the Blue Jays will either score a run with this AB…or they won’t….

  128. Bob from NJ

Load the bases for Alex Rios…nice

  129. Andrea

What is Gator saying to Kei Igawa? Can he even understand him?

Jennifer–I was offered a ticket to go today but I graciously declined. I have tickets for Thursday, and that’s Wang day, so I think I’m good.

2 scoreless innings from Igawa! Way to pitch!

  130. Mike NYY

Two consecutive shutout innnings. Think about that. Who needs Phillip Hughes!!!! :D

  131. YanksFanLV

    Escaped that jam!

  132. Mike

That wasn’t the best situation for Igawa to be in, but luckily he got out of it.

  133. Tseng

Igawa’s on pace for 4 or 5 scoreless innings! I’m positive that the bullpen will respond by giving up a few runs.

  134. Rocco

    WOO HOO!

    2 IP 0 ER!

  135. ben from boston

i dont get when people cross stuff out. WHAT! lol

  136. Alan

I am Positive that I just took my first dose of Pepto AND that I will need more B4 the nite is over….

  137. Lowell

I got this from the YES boards anti-Arod shirts for sale!

    http://neighborhoodies.com/anti-arod-p-135.html

  138. BBB

Holy crap, I cannot believe Igawa got out of that unscathed! Good for him!

For those of you watching on TV is he really wearing the sunglasses? He is in the game pic on yankees.com. Optimism, look how well he pitched when he wore them vs Bos!

  139. Alan

Tseng….you are OUT of the club !!!…(wink)

  140. grafxkid

    Matsui is ON FIRE!!!

  141. Rocco

    HEELS YEA!

    Godzilla is on fire!

  142. Mike NYY

What is Gator saying to Kei Igawa? Can he even understand him?

    Gator: ARE…YOU…OKAY

    Igawa: *Smiles and nods*

    Gator: JUST….STAY…FOCUSED

    Igawa: *Smiles and nods*

    Gator: OKAY….BYE

    Igawa: *Smiles and nods*

  143. Mike

    GODZILLA!!!

  144. Andrea

ben: when I cross stuff out it’s by accident. I type with a lot of — and when you type two of those it crosses out everything in between. I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t mean it when I do it.

I took my French friend to a Yankee game when she was here visiting, and she’s a big Matsui fan now. I email her every time he hits a home run. she gets excited. I think she can be on Team Optimism.

  145. YanksFanLV

Godzilla is back! I can’t believe the way he is tearing it up!

  146. ben from boston

i just literally did the fisk haha

  147. Alan

KC is hanging with Boston… 0-0 in the 4th…

  148. Mike NYY

Posada had a HR. Imagine how far A-Rod will hit one :D

  149. BBB

Godzilla reppin’ w/the run support for his fellow countryman! Yay Matsui! YAY OPTIMISTS!

  150. mel

    Go-Go-Godzilla!

Girl in the USA jersey catching the Japanese All-star. That’s cool.

  151. TKinDC

Anyone else listening to CBS? If I could be paid $100 for every blown homerun call by Sterling I would never have to work again.

    GET LASIK!!!

(Other than that I like him :) )

  152. mel

Oops. That was a guy. I assumed it was a girl b/c of the hair and he was hugging a guy. My bad.

  153. ben from boston

    mike nyy LOL!!! -alright andrea-

  154. Global Warming

Aww almost had back to back to back.

  155. Rocco

Kei igawa will strike out the side in order in the 3rd. YEY team optimism!

  156. Mike

    Robbie Cano!

  157. BBB

    ROBBIE CANO DONTCHA KNOW!!

  158. Mike NYY

Sterling misses a ton of calls and I hate his need for a call for every player but you can really tell he loves his job. I actually feel sorry for him with all the criticism he gets. Maybe he should be tried with a different partner.

  159. mel

    Canoe!

  160. CB

Matsui was being written off as being old and breaking down despite the wrist injury he was coming back from. 14 HRs just past the all star break. Pretty much on track to have a typical Matsui year.

Cano had to be traded or sent down to the minors.

  161. Tseng

It sure would have been nice to have 3 homers in a row. Towers is sure getting hit hard this inning, as in, balls being hit very hard.

  162. grafxkid

I don’t mind Sterling missing calls every now and then…however, I do mind him taking forever to update me on the score whenever i’m catching the game in the car.

  163. ben from boston

HOLD THE LEAD! has anyone seen “safe at home” 1962, with maris and mantle? my dad wants that movie “kill the umpire” but i can only find the two togehter. so if anyone can give me anything about it thatd be wicked good. i dont trust amazon and those crazy cats

  164. Global Warming

Yeah Charlie Steiner and Sterling were great.

Despite all of Sterlings shortcomings I do know one thing be true. Given the choice between listening to John Sterling or Michael Kay for 3 hours. I’ll pick Sterling every single time.

  165. TKinDC

Mike, don’t you understand that the game is really just a vehicle for us to bask in the glow of J. Sterling’s deathless prose???

    yeesh

  166. BBB

Mike NYY, I definitely think Sterling would be alot more tolerable w/a different partner…it’s Suzyn that really upsets the apple cart as far as I’m concerned. I wonder why they don’t give Tino a try, he filled in for Suzyn one night last year and I thought it went great..

  167. Mike NYY

    Same grafxkid

Does Towers have a K yet? If not then we’ve got a good shot at scoring no less than a hundred gazillion runs. I`m writing off Igawa’s struggles in the 2nd because of him sitting on the bench for a while due to my sudden surge of optimism :D

  168. ben from boston

mel i thought it was a girl then i was like wait is that a guy?

  169. Mike NYY

Mike, don’t you understand that the game is really just a vehicle for us to bask in the glow of J. Sterling’s deathless prose???

    Lol :D

  170. Mike NYY

BBB, Suzyn actually just signed an extension

  171. BBB

So what does everyone think…if ARod gets HBP as a result of “HA!”, does Proctor bean back?

I went to Hughes’ rehab start on Fri. and Trenton was playing New Hampshire, the Jays’ affiliate…every time there was an infield popup, I totally yelled “HA!” Gotta represent for Alex! :D

  172. ben from boston

FIRE SUZYN, KENNEDY, HAZEL MAE, MORGAN, BUCK, KEN ROSENTHAL, AND JOE BUCK’s partner in crime

  173. We want Tim Redding

Gabbard of Red xoS is perfect through 4 !

  174. Alan

I am POSITIVE that we will score 7 or more runs this game and I am POSITIVE that it will be very likely that we will need all of them….

  175. ben from boston

proctor is the only one with balls

  176. Tseng

Igawa is like an Asian Jaret Wright, only somehow worse (thus far). I’m still hoping that he somehow fixes everything and becomes a decent starter..

  177. Rocco

    F!@#

  178. jennifer

Okay what is positive about that? :(

  179. ben from boston

    oh

  180. Alan

I am POSITIVE that I don’t like being right about my last post….DANG !!! We got the bats though….GO YANKEES !!!

  181. BBB

    suc-kei strikes again. :(

  182. Mike NYY

    Must stay optimistic….

    Must stay optimistic….

  183. Andrea

I think the announcers are a little too harsh on Kei. I mean, i agree with everything they’re saying, but calm it down a little.

  184. Russell W

hopefully this will be his last game in pinstripes.

  185. ben from boston

alan is nostrudomus i swear. JENNIFER ROCCO… it isnt supposed to be easy. we have to fight

  186. wheels

igawa is done. once one of the young guys can pitch, i would be shocked to see this clown again.

by far the worst signing of the cashman era(up there with pavano, wright, and womack)

  187. Tseng

The positive is that Igawa has not given the Jays the lead. Hm, maybe Igawa should burn his gear too.

  188. Dimitri

Igawa got squeezed. Inning would’ve been a lot different if he got the call on Wells.

  189. jennifer

oh oh I have something positive. Phil will be back soon!!!

  190. kidjock

This umpire is as wild as Igawa. I would say this is a good thing, but Igawa is clueless where the strike zone is. Especially when he is up on all these guys. Maybe fans should not clap at 2 strikes so he doesn’t know the count.

  191. ben from boston

    there you go jen

  192. Mike NYY

We have a 54% chance of winning this game!!!!!

  193. Brian M

Enough is enough. I have read through that appaling and biased report and then some even more ill-informed scathing things here.

I started to write my response but it is turning into a 10 000 word document so now let me just say that I think Cash had a very difficult job last winter, because after the Tampa run years the team was old and expensive. Cash had to keep the team competitive while trying to develop talent. He couldn’t wave the big cheque book at most top players because they want 5 yr deals and that is what he is trying to steer the team away from. Do you really want Lilly keeping Kennedy out of the rotation in 3 years time?

Essentially he tried to keep the team in the game with players he can move when Tabata, Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy, Horne, Marquez, et al run the roost they are complimented by veterans Posada, Jeter and ARod, not underachieving, over-paid former superstars. The team would be also tied with Boston right now if not for the crazy run of injuries which lost us about 5 or 6 starting pitchers (esp Pavano, Hughes and Karstens), Damon’s troubles, Giambi despite DHin getting hurt. Plus Abreu and Cano have played very badly – contrary to every scouting report!

I’ll post my take on the deals individually as the game goes on. At the least it should give the Cashman haters something new to snarl at every 20 mins!!

  194. ben from boston

    what mike?

  195. Tseng

Yeah I agree with Dimitri, it should be 2-1. He got the call on Thomas that he probably didn’t deserve as a sort of “compensation” at least.

  196. BBB

Now we just need to answer back! Damon then the top of the order coming up! (Haha is it wrong that Damon is tantamount to the no 9 batter in my mind right now..prove me wrong Johnny!!!)

  197. Mike NYY

    what mike?

  198. kasey

you guys seriously thought there was a chance kei igawa might hold a two-run lead? really?

don’t disagree even a little bit with the evaluation of cashman. his winter of 2006 is like a perfect storm of idiocy.

  199. Alan

OK…now it is time for Bobby to get on…nice bit of hitting by Jeter again….Is it me, or is he hitting a “soft” .333 ???(joke)

  200. ben from boston

got it. and kasey you arent invited to the optimists club

  201. Jeff NJ

An A BOMB FOR A ROD!

  202. Alan

OK,,,after THAT bomb…I bet, no matter what, they BEAN the ROD !!!

  203. CB

    Brian,

Your points are very well made. This year Cashman was trying to break the endless cycle the yankees have been stuck in:

Sign older free agent to long term contract – lose draft picks – watch player lose athleticism and break down.

How many times did we see that? There just no future there. It doesn’t work.

The Tampa people arguably ran the worst draft in all of baseball. It wasn’t until 2004 when Cashman started to get the organization moving back in the right direction with the draft and young pitching.

He made mistakes with Pavano and Wright. But to his credit he learned the right lesson.

  204. BBB

    MVP MVP MVP MVP!!!!!

    HA!!!!

  205. Adam

Hey Peter- Don’t you think Cash is looking to turn some of these bad moves into one or two really good moves. I mean he’s got trade chips. Looks like we just want to hold on to Phil, Joba and Ian anyway.

  206. Andrea

I like to see them run out potential DPs. A lot of people just give up when they see where they hit the ball. The Yankees (a lot of them) run out DP, and they run out pop ups, just in case. Case and point: Chris Basak.

Every time A-Rod hits a home run it’s closer and closer to my sunday season ticket seats.

  207. Rocco

    cha ching!

  208. TKinDC

Right Kasey – we would be so much better off with Randy Johnson keeping Pavano company on the DL, with Sheff being Sheff (future head of United Nations), and some new GM who would have panicked and gotten rid of the young pitching on the way!!!

    A-BOMB!!!

  209. Joe

    Now does he get beaned?

  210. ben from boston

thats a great coincidence… am i the only one who still insists to his friends that roger is the real homerun king?

  211. T.J.

How many homers for Rod 32?

  212. Rocco

    OH…

    McDonalds commercial count = 0!

    YEY!

  213. ben from boston

  214. TKinDC

KC trailing BoSox by 2 but have bases loaded, 2 out

  215. BBB

If he gets beaned Proctor better throw back! Or Farnsworth should…cause if he got suspended, we’d have a short respite from his 8th inning antics.. ;)

  216. ben from boston

andrea are you sure you are a 23 year old young lady. youre like a 40 year old- columnist (who isnt dumb)

  217. TKinDC

I’d get Bruney to do it ! He needs a bigger target!!! and he seems to be a little ornery

  218. ben from boston

Tkin… not anymore and here here BBB

  219. jennifer

UGH Kei got the runs back. He better not give them back

  220. CB

You can talk about the Sheffield deal, the Johnson deal, Igawa, Phelps, etc…

But the most important personnel move made in the off season was Cashman refusing to even entertain the idea of trading ARod.

  221. We want Tim Redding

Gabbard of Red xoS has one-hitter through 5 !

  222. ben from boston

everyone. the season may not be going the way we want but we have been privy to two great games these past two days

  223. BBB

True TK, Bruney looks like he could definitely throw down with the best of them. Farns has been so useless on the mound though and at $7m a year, he might as well earn his keep by kickin some azz! Which we all know he can do..Paul Wilson anyone? LOL

  224. TKinDC

Can Clemens speak Japanese? Igawa is averaging 20+ pitches per inning this game and Rocket seems to pitch about 12 when he is on.

I am afraid we just picked up Kei to jump on the Dice-K express after the train had already left the station. Asian posters (self-described) to this site have said that he was not well regarded.

But we are ahead and will WIN!!!

  225. Brad

On the bad news front ………..Igawa will be a free agent after the 2012 season.

  226. Andrea

ben: you caught me, I’m a 40 y.o. man posing as a 23 year old. Just to trick you!

BBB: Farns isn’t coming in today. Torre told Kim Jones. God I despise her. So let’s count on someone else. Hopefully not Proctor. He can’t get suspended again.

  227. ben from boston

if all of igawas outtings are like this i can deal with it

  228. ben from boston

andrea as long as youre positive it doesnt matter

  229. Alan

how is THAT not a strike???….K-man IS getting squeezed !

  230. TKinDC

Dontcha think Proctor would volunteer to peg a guy just so he can get another rest to make sure his arm remains attached to his torso?

Andrea is a man? Is this an Austin Powers thing?

  231. Jeff

Andrea, Why do women hate women?

  232. Andrea

Someone, I think Varitek?, would write Japanese phrases on his arm to communicate with a Japanese pitcher. Maybe Jorge should try this? Or just get Matsui in there! Doesn’t he speek English well enough to do a bit of translating?

  233. BBFan

I guess Igawa has to earn the trust of the umpires just like bulllpen guys have to earn the trust of Joe!!!!!!!!!!!!

  234. Andrea

ok–I’m really not sure what a balk really is. Things get called balks and I dont’ get it, and then other things don’t. Can someone explain it to me for sure?

  235. ben from boston

wells is on my fantasy team. it makes things complicated but hey if wells hits one out. i can be positive!

  239. BBB

Andrea, duh, I should have figured Farns wasn’t pitching today after back-to-back days of futility. And you’re right, Proctor can’t get suspended again so looks like Bruney’s our man!

btw, I hate Kim Jones too. Must be a chick thing lol.

  240. ben from boston

although i do like that better. a balk is basically when a pitcher tries to deceive the runner is what ive heard.

  241. Rocco

    McDonalds Commercial count = 1

    BOOOOO

  242. BBB

Yeah I really think if Iggy has to be in the rotation he should come after Wang…Wang goes deepest in games and Lord knows the pen will always have to work with Kei on the mound!

  243. BBFan

All said and done, Igawa’s outing is not that bad so far. Many were expecting a disaster. As his pitch count is into 90s, Joe has to keep an eye on him and replace him at the slightest hint of trouble.

Well, the Nuggets guys strike again…..

  244. ben from boston

    jorges singles rock my SOX

  245. Dr. Acula

Melky makes running down a deep fly ball look so easy.

  246. Mike

Igawa needs to learn a sinker or something that give him some ground balls (and better yet, some confidence).

He has good pitches, and can get strike outs, but he really needs something for when he has someone on base to force a DP.

  247. Alan

Cano held off on that pitch ? is this OUR Cano ???

  248. Carmine

Cashman is supposed to be talking to a few teams but never tips his hand. A good guess is that Philly is one of them and a good hope is that Farnsworth will be called a former Yankee.

  249. jennifer

that commercial is in the top 10 of worst commercials of all time. Everytime it comes on, I mute it!!

Sorry to keep leaving, i’m hooking up my new tomtom.

  250. sunny615

why is cano swinging at obvious out of strike zone pitches??

  251. Dr. Acula

Digya see that shot of Guidry drinking in the dugout – after that Iggy Inning, I betcha it wasn’t water ;)

  252. Rattachewy

An armless Phil Hughes is better than 4 Iggies.

  253. TKinDC

    BBB –

That is a great idea. Especially since CMW is a sinker-baller and Igawa is (sadly) a high ball pitcher.

I would also put Moose between Andy and Rocket for fun.

  254. Brian M

Wow have I finally found some like minds here? CB, Adam and possibly TKinDC. I can’t agree ore. Cash has not only an amazing group of really top level pitching prospects, but a really, really, huge group of major league level guys who can be grouped together and traded for someone really exciting. Will Ohlendorf, Sanchez, Cox, Melancon, Garcia, White, Robertson, Whelan, Bean, Beam and Contos all become ace relievers? I doubt it but a couple will and the others are very attractive to a number of teams and could result in some really exciting trades.

If Houston decide to rebuild would they really move Oswalt? Will Minnesota be able to resign Santana? Will the A’s decide to move Harden? I don’t know, but I do know that we rank our pitching propects and package 3 or 4 guys from the 5 – 15 range and put together a more attractive deal than pretty much any team in baseball. AND we keep Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy and Betances.

3 or 4 years down line and the enormous crop we are collecting will be in the majors, and the minors are being restocked faster than ever (we made a couple of really exciting international signings again, and had a pretty decent draft).

In 5 years time the only teams in contention will be us, Detroit, the Mets, the Dodgers and Arizona. A 10 yr reign could begin.

  255. randy l

the high pitch count doesn’t matter. let igawa go to 130 pitches if he’s not giving up too many runs. he did it in japan. it wouldn’t hurt to see if stretching him out helps his control.

  256. Wait Til Next Year

Anyone hear what is up with the injury to Betances?

  257. pat m

    Cubbies just acquired Jason Kendall….

  258. Alan

this just in….NEWS FLASH…KCity stinks, Ortiz Homers to put the BSox up 4-0…I am POSITIVE that I don’t like this…

  259. We want Tim Redding

Gabbard of Red xoS has one-hitter through 6 !

And Fat Ortiz just hit his 52nd homer of the year.

  260. DesignatedBlogger

The announcers were talking about Igawa and Desalvo pitching the upcoming doubleheader. Put a chill up my spine.

  261. TKinDC

    Brian M-

I’m on board. The fact is that when fair or good starting pitchers cost $11M or more on the Free Agent market (see Meche, Lilly, or worse Zito) then the name of the game is stockpiling young, AFFORDABLE arms. They can be traded for position players and position players tend to be more available on the market.

That is why I don’t kill CASHMAN for taking a longer view or resisting the temptation to rent Texiera and sacrifice a good young arm.

  262. CB

Betances was supposed to see the doctor today. The Yanks are so quiet about injuries to prospects (often don’t give any injury information when a player is out) that I doubt we’ll hear anything definitive for a while.

Hopefully its only some tendinitis and needs rest. He was touching 97 last year and put on 20 lbs of muscle in the off season. His upside is enormous.

  263. Mike S.

…and the Iguana gives up ANOTHER gopher ball.

  264. Wait Til Next Year

Especially bad is the improved power by Ortiz when everyone said he was hurt, could not hit for power as much, etc.

  265. BBB

    UGH

Has he gotten Glaus out even once tonight??

  266. Alan

we STILL are gonna score 7 runs this game…so I am POSITIVE that the K-man has still not hurt us…

  267. ben from boston

hahaha edwar on the bike hahah

  268. Brian M

Dont worry Alan, if we get through this with a win we have survived one more turn of the rotation until Phil and Karstens get back. 2 more Igawa starts tops and then we have Wang, Pettitte, Clemens, Muss and Franchise. Tell me that isn’t a rotation that can make up 9 games, esp when ARod, Jeter, Posada, Abreu and Matsui are all hitting well.

  269. belial

Gabard looks great in Boston so far.

  270. Alan

    106 pitches….bring in ANYBODY !!!

  271. Andrea

That’s why I don’t understand balking. It’s basically, the ump decides you were mean and awards people bases.

  272. Alan

and just STARTING ( yikes ) to warm up in the BullPen…Mr. I guarantee that I can walk at least one dude an inning BRIAN BRUNEY ( Applause here )……(positively smashing !)

  273. Green Tea Torre

going back to pags’ analysis…he makes some good points, but i think his grading system is highly arbitrary and inaccurate.

first of all, he is grading every deal with perfect 20/20 hindsight. second, he is clearly not a fan of young players coming up from the minors as opposed to overpaying for old veterans. his attitude seems to be that shef and randy johnson were good players at one point, so unless we could get somebody of equal to the value of those players IN THEIR PRIME, it would be a bad deal.

finally, if you look at his analysis of epstein, you can see he’s making no sense, because he gave cash a D- overall and epstein a C- overall, yet he ripped every move cash made and gave theo a bunch of As and Bs (and some Fs). makes no sense. he’s just trying to get a rise out of fans, and more publicity for his crappy myspace page.

  274. TKinDC

Alan – be careful what you wish for – - – we have seen some pretty poor appearances from the boys in the bully.

Check any Myers appearance in the last 3 months!!!!!!!!!

  275. Alan

Brian M…you are officially a 5 star member of the Positive Club…welcome aboard !!!

  276. SJ44

Igawa is what he is. They know he stinks but, what is the alternative? They have 8 games in the next 7 days. Three of their 5 starters are 5 inning pitchers. Its tough to blow out the entire bullpen in Game 1 of an 8 game week.

Especially since the bullpen worked a lot in Tampa.

I am sure they would LOVE to have someone else to replace him with but, who? The AA guys aren’t ready, Hughes isn’t ready and DeSalvo is pitching Saturday.

The best case scenario is they somehow win this game without blowing out the bullpen, DeSalvo pitches well enough on Saturday to merit another start, and Hughes pitches well enough to continue on schedule in his rehab. If those things can happen, then Saturday is the last time he starts. If not, they are stuck with him for right now.

That’s all they can do. There is no magic solution to this problem.

  277. TKinDC

    Andrea –

Just think of it as simulating or faking the start of a pitch with the intent to deceive a runner.

All other definitions are flukes (like the pitcher dropping the ball)

  278. belial

“his attitude seems to be that shef and randy johnson were good players at one point, so unless we could get somebody of equal to the value of those players IN THEIR PRIME, it would be a bad deal.”

No, Pags seemed to say that the Yanks got basically nothing in return for either Sheff or RJ, which I agree with.

Almost each evaluation was right on the money, and being a mid-season report card, you can only go by what’s happened so far, and so far almost every move has been a disaster.

  279. ben from boston

alan brian m is not the PRESIDENT pf the positive club

  280. Tseng

If Igawa can finish this inning, 3 runs in 5 innings isn’t THAT bad. If he can improve to give roughly 6 innings each time out at 3 runs… that wouldn’t be too bad.

  281. YanksFanLV

I just don’t understand Igawa, he has 6 strikeouts but is still getting hammered pretty hard.

  282. ben from boston

    now the president*

  283. Mike

    Gah…

When Igawa hits spots, he’s good, but when he throws flat balls they sail over the wall. I think his arm strength (not velocity-related) may be really weak. He needs to pump weights.

  284. ben from boston

yea but tseng that is doubtful

  285. belial

    “The AA guys aren’t ready”

They are as ready as Igawa.

Heck, Gabard is 10 times the pitcher Igawa is…

  286. BBB

Well at least he got out of it! And as some of you have said, this really wasn’t quite as bad as I think alot of us had feared!

  287. ben from boston

  288. Eric

Igawa’s almost like the opposite of Wang.
Lots of strike outs, lots of BB, and lots of HR, and no grounders.

  289. Andrea

SEVEN STRIKEOUTS? Wow. He still makes me nervous, but I’ll take it

  290. SJ44

How can anybody say Cashman got “nothing” for the Sheffield and Johnson deals when neither deal was made for this year.

How does Pags know these guys won’t turn out to be ML players.

If he was that smart, he wouldn’t be doing his commentary on a MySpace page.

It sounds to me he has a bug up his butt because Cashman cancelled his deal with the Yankees and this is his form of “payback”.

They are wait and see deals. That’s the most intelligent thing anybody can say at this time about the deals.

  291. Onkel Bob

7K over 5 innings, if not for 2 meatballs to Glaus… not bad, pretty good.

I would like to hear some optimism on Johnny Damon. It is completely unnaccepptable for our leadoff hitter/dh to be hitting .241. It’s pathetic.

  294. belial

“They are wait and see deals. That’s the most intelligent thing anybody can say at this time about the deals.”

Other than the cripple Sanchez, you can “see” what the Yanks got, and it’s nothing. NONE of the other guys have done well in the minors this year.

  295. TKinDC

    SJ –

I totally agree, when you trade for prospects you can’t make a snapsot judgement 5 months after the trade when you gave up a 35+ year old and received a 23 year or two.

As for the motive, didn’t deepthroat say “follow the money”?

If Cash cut Pags off then he is carrying a Paul Bunyan sized Axe

  296. Andrea

ben: that’s the balk call I get, but sometimes I just see stuff and I don’t understand the balk. But I guess that’s why I’m not an umpire. Though that would be a pretty sweet job.

AAA is too good to send Igawa. Staten Island is too close. Ship him to Low A Charleston. Can’t feel sorry for Torre starting a dud with a 7.14 ERA. What you see is what you get.

  300. belial

There is no enjoyment in these games when Boston already has won and all this does is keep you 9 friggin’ games out.

What a miserable baseball season Brian Cashman and Joe Torre have given us.

  301. BBFan

Does any one know the status of Karstens?
He pitched three innings in a rehab game quite some time back and then there is no news about him.

  302. Brian M

Just for fun here is my response to the Pagliarulo and White report on Cash – pt 1 :)

    The Sheffield / Wright trades

At the winter GM meetings Cash was the talk of the town – why? cos he took two contracts he didnt want (Sheffield’s and Wright’s) and turned them into 4 solid pitching prospects.

Sheffield is an idiot with a big mouth in a town full of mics. He didnt have position sinse Abreu played so well and ARod loved hitting behind him. 1st wasn’t an option and Giambi (who can’t be moved because of his no trade clause and huge money) had to become a full time DH to have a shot at staying healthy and to improve team defense.

Sheffield was a distraction on a team with more than enough drama and had to go. Was he a different type of bat? To what – disciplined hitters who work the count, get on base and hit for average and power? He is a good fastball hitter on a team full of fastball hitters. He’s good I know, but he’s an idiot and everyone on the team sighed when he lefty town.

Sanchez had a history of injuries and was a risk. But given that he had a very high ceiling (he was on most top 20 lists of prospects in all of baseball), coupled with the sheer number of prospects at starting pitching (who could pick up the slack if he was hurt) – he was a risk worth taking. He couldn’t have gotten Miller or anyone in that category, this was a good deal getting rid of a club house cancer of a player who would be an unwelcome distraction all year.

Britton was basically a freebie since he would have bought out Wrights contract anyway at the same price. He also happened to be a good young arm who had performed well as a key part of Baltimore’s bullpen. Clearly not someone you want on your team.

Baltimore had rushed him through their system sinse they had only 1 good arm in their bullpen and a horrible rotation which was doing well if it reached the 4th inning. Cash knew he had lots of bullpen options and Britton could continue his development in the 1st half of the year and possibly contribute in Aug/Sept. For the record he has an ERA under 2.50 in AAA. Not bad for a freebie.

  303. TKinDC

Sterling says Proctor for 2 innings and Viz and the Hammer of the Gods.

And he has never been wrong ;)

  304. BBB

ugh, why do we keep helping this mediocre pitcher out by swinging at balls?

  307. Nettles vs. Lee

How long can you put your worst hitter at DH and the leadoff spot?

If he is too injured to play in the OF, then put him on the DL. If you insist on keeping him in the lineup, then for the love of God stop batting him leadoff.

  308. Mike

is it just me or does Scott Proctor really look like a husband? Just in general, he looks like a husband.

  311. Mike S.

Yanks Fan LV: leadoff at .241? Lousy, but I remember Horace Clarke’s .230 1968 season.

  312. Chicago Dave

Fearless prediction…After the game Igawa will speak (through an interpreter, of course!) in glowing terms of his performance this evening. He’ll say that he needs to work on his control a little bit (watch videotape, remind himself to stop hurrying his deliver, blah, blah, blah), but that he only really threw two bad pitches all night long (the two homers). Only Farnsworth is more clueless about his own distinct lack of major league ability!!!

  313. Mike S.

…of course in that year of the pitcher, it seemed like EVERYONE hit .230 that year (Yanks Team BA that year–.214)

  316. Frankie D.

Catcher Jason Kendall of Oakland traded to Cubs. How did that one sneak past Cashman ?

  317. SJ44

They aren’t as ready as Igawa. That’s an emotional statement and not one rooted in fact.

How are guys “ready” for the major league when they are on 75-85 pitch counts in AA?

They aren’t ready. Don’t get caught up in stats. You want to rush young pitchers? That’s how they get hurt.

Explain to me the logic of risking the best commodity the Yankees have right now (young arms) for the #5 spot in the rotation? It makes absolutely no sense. Especially when, in a few weeks, Hughes or Karstans may be ready.

No GM or organziation with any knowledge of the game would rush a AA kid to the majors to replace Igawa right now. If they did, whomever makes that decision should be fired on the spot.

Kids who have less than 200 career innings in the majors aren’t ready to pitch at this level. They just aren’t and baseball is littered with broken bodies of those who were pushed too early. Francisco Liriano, Mark Prior and Kerry Wood are three examples.

  318. Locakes

Is “soft body” supposed to be informative? Honestly, I’m not a scout so I really don’t know, what does that tell you about how good a player will be? “Pags” seems to just throw it out there, unconnected to anything else. I thought that sort of subjective stuff was no more in the post-Moneyball era.

  319. Andrew

Oakland wanted a defensively-sound catcher. We don’t have one of those.

    Um…no.

Winning is the only thing that matters.

  332. DesignatedBlogger

Friggin Michael Kay. “Proctor hasn’t allowed a run…”
    Boom…HOMERUN.
    Way to jinx us.

  333. ben from boston

you can say that jinx again he andread it. ssorry andrea

  334. Andrea

This is the first time I have heard Michael Kay NOT have an overly enthusiastic home run call for the other team.

I was just noticing what he said–every run from this game has been via home run. That’s just plain crazy.

  335. Chicago Dave

Who the hell would be dumb enough to trust Pags’ evaluation of anyone?! Is Dan Pasqua working with him now, by the way? HA!!!

  336. jennifer

So Igawa and Matt are pitching the dh on saturday?

Igawa pitches game 1, sent down, Matt pitches game 2.

Kay is such a jinx. Can HE SHUT UP. Doesn’t even get it out of his mouth that Scott hasn’t allowed a run since he became Sparky and what does he do. Gives up a run. Pete tell Kay to SHUT UP!!

  337. Tseng

So much for those scorless streaks by Villone and Proctor…

  338. White Plains Mike

I hate Michael Kay a lot

  339. Paul

    Tseng:

Igawa should get the mop up role. He can start off with the regular restrooms at the Stadium and work his way up the executive ones.

  340. Andrea

I didn’t jinx it this time!

  341. belial

And as Boston rolls along, the Yanks embarass themselves and their fans by straggling at a .500 pace.

    That is embarassing.

  342. Mike

Proctor doesn’t need to burn his equipment, just Kay.

  343. Chicago Dave

The Yanks’ bullpen is enough to make any manager look bad.

  344. ben from boston

well belial they were winning and you werent happy so that means youre an empty fan. youre one of those ppl who goes to games not for the joy of it but because you wanna bitch

  345. Rocco

lol you guys really can’t blame Kay…. he didn’t throw the pitch.

  346. WeMissPaulie

Troy Glaus is a Yankee killer -careful Scotty

  347. ben from boston

    i know andrea lol

  348. jennifer

Moves the Yankees did to make this week.

    1. DL Damon, I’ve been saying for awhile to bring up Shelley (I actually emailed Pete about a month and half ago)

    2. Saturday, pitch Igawa game one, send down, bring up Matt

  349. migames

    Dan Pasqua and Gary Ward!

  350. CB

    Agreed with SJ44 and TKinDC

We can’t continuously complain about the old players on the team e.g. Giambi who are breaking down and at the same time criticize trades made for young players that are intended to payoff in the future.

That makes no sense. You can’t have it both ways.

Humberto Sanchez pitched in the Futures Game last year. Over the past 9 years how many yankee pitchers have been selected for the Futures Game? Yes he had a concerning elbow but high end pitching prospect like that just aren’t traded at all unless there is some question. Even then Dave Dombrowski described the deal as “painful” when it was made.

Kevin Whelan has outstanding stuff – terrific fastball and splitfinger – but has only been pitching for a few years since being converted to the position at Texas A&M. His line over last 19 innings: 19 IP 6H 1 ER 6BB 17K and he was named the Florida State League pitcher of the week. Yes prospect go on hot streaks and most do nothing.

But if we don’t acquire guys like Whelan and devlop them we are going to stuck relying on guys like Farnsworth or Proctor. That’s all there is to it. You aren’t getting good arms unless you bring them up through your system. If you want to hold on to the Sheffields and Johnson’s of the world you’re going to be stuck with an old team that relies on journeymen in the pen.

  351. River Ave Report

Yeah Michael Kay made Scott Proctor pitch a fastball down the middle to Rios.

  352. Mike

    “That is embarassing.”

    You spelled “embarrassing” wrong, idiot.

  353. Stuart

forget about the HR, when can Ramirez get in a game??/ proctor 6 and 7, viz 8 and mariano 9th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ramirez is the literal invisible man… there pen is flammable…..

Igawa’s outing was painful, he was lucky he only gave up 3 even though the pitch to Wells was strike 3…

this is painful.. Why no Ramirez?????WHy don’t they just have 24 players on the team..

  354. Mike S.

What did we say earlier today about Joe going to the deep, dry well all of the time? Keeps using the same old same old and won’t give guys chances? Sure enough, Joe goes to his boy Proctor and won’t give Edwar a chance.

    (throws remote across room….)

  355. jennifer

Staying postive, at least Igawa doesn’t get the win. :D

  356. Brian M

Kendall also HATES to sit out a game. He’d play every day if they let him. He wouldn’t happily be a back up to Jorge and we don’t need unhappy players in the clubhouse.

  357. Dr. Acula

last year, Proctor strike out to walk ratio was nearly *3 to 1* This year it’s *1 to 1*

  358. Tseng

Haha, Paul. For that kind of Money they should at least have Igawa go help build the new stadium or hawk hotdogs a little more productive. Maybe have him be the translator for Matsui… a free service!

  359. WeMissPaulie

Man, we’ve seen way too many of those kinds of innings….

  360. Max

    A-Rod’s coming up.

    Does he get beaned?

  361. Tseng

Ah nuts, disregard that. I say that and forget Igawa can’t speak a word of english either.

  362. Wait Til Next Year

Joba Chamberlain should be starting Saturday, not DeSalvo– who is clearly “not ready”.

  363. TKinDC

A wise man said 7 runs wins this game, he looked a lot like me and his post is somewhere above.

At least we have some hot bats coming up this inning!!!

  364. Chicago Dave

    “Dan Pasqua and Gary Ward!”

If only they would ask Mike “The Hit Man” Easler’s opinion…That guy was the s#%t!!!!

  365. SJ44

    Ben,

That’s his second TJ Surgery. He had one in the minors.

Two TJ surgeries before your 24th birthday isn’t a recipe for success.

Sanchez isn’t a “cripple”. What a nonsensical statement. Did you see him pitch in the Futures Game last year and during last season? The guy was throwing 98, with a nasty splitter, and that was with a bad elbow.

He comes back next year, he is a perfect candidate for the bullpen. How can anybody criticize these deals now? It makes no sense.

Ohlendorf got hurt and since he has healed (back injury), he has pitched much better.

Again, these are deals you have to wait out. Well, you don’t “have to”, per se. You can whine about them now but, if Sanchez and Ohlendorf become guys that help this team in the future, those deals end up being good deals. Especially since the whole idea of the them was to think ahead and not this year.

As far as Damon is concerned, who is the alternative right now? They don’t have anybody else. Giambi started working out today in Tampa. He thinks he can be back in a couple of weeks. If that happens, then they have a real DH again.

Until then, there isn’t anybody else they can put in the role.

  366. ben from boston

hahaha mike get him. and yea jenn you are theKay is such a jinx.
“Can HE SHUT UP. picture of positivity”
    lol just busting your… balls?

  367. WeMissPaulie

Tseng – that would be funny. Make hin George’s bitch for a year.

  368. Andrea

I really want to see Edwar pitch. Are we really sure he won’t come in?

  369. ben from boston

i didnt know that, sj44, i guess all three are good points then. my bad

  370. ben from boston

and yea i butchered the cut and paste and the quotes on that jennifer so just ignore it

  371. belial

“well belial they were winning and you werent happy so that means youre an empty fan. youre one of those ppl who goes to games not for the joy of it but because you wanna bitch”

Nope, just a realistic fan who calls it as I see it, and this team gives fans a lot of crap to watch.

    And great job by Proctor!

  372. Chicago Dave

When is the last time Edwar pitched? (Sorry, I was out-of-town all this past weekend and didn’t keep track of the box scores from the T-Bay series!)

  373. CB

“winning is the only thing that matters”

    Who would disagree with that?

It’s a matter of what will eventually get you to winning.

No one cares that they’ve won the division for the past seven years only to get beat soundly in the post season by younger teams with better arms.

It’s happened like clock work every year.

  374. Andrea

They may give us crap to watch, but they give us great plays too–like Andy Phillips yesterday, , Abreu running out that DP ball, A-Rod’s jump over the foul bunt yesterday, A-Rod following through on a throw to 1st even though the ball ended up foul–just in case.

We’ve got to focus on the great plays. Those are what we tune in for!

  375. Rocco

edwar last pitched july 6th vs LAA

  376. Andrea

sorry. I crossed it out again.

  377. Chicago Dave

There must be some more pitching prospects out there (with other teams) in desperate need of TJ surgery (i.e. guys Cashman can’t resist trading for)….How about we package Igawa and Farnsworth (or Proctor or anyone else from the bullpen except Mo) for another lame-arm wonder?

  378. Brian M

    Cashman review pt 2

He then took Johnson and his huge contract, bad back, 5+ ERA, and 70 yr old beard and turned it into a solid experienced reliever(with a reputation as an innings eater – something Cash knows you need in Joe’s pen), one of Arizona’s top 3 pitching prospects and a potentially very good utility infielder, with a reputation as one of the best defensive players in the minors.

The money used in these contracts paid for Clemens. He has given the Yankees an energy boost and kept the Yankees at least close until the end of the season (I haven’t given up yet but with Clemens in Boston – where he would be now if Cash hadn’t pulled the trigger- it would be over).

The only thing I wondered about was whether he could have picked up Owings instead of Ohlendorf but Owings is a former outfielder and his bat makes him much more valuable in the NL than the AL. I’m guessing his price was just too high.

  379. Chicago Dave

    Thanks Rocco!!!

  380. jennifer

OUCH!! That is a horrible bruise.

  381. JeffG

Bruney and Ramirez should bring cots to the bullpen and just nap through the games.

Proctor is this year’s Tanyon Sturtze. Good job Joe. How many pitcher’s do you need to kill before your blood lust is sated?

  382. BBFan

    Mike S.,

Thanks on the update about Karstens.

  383. ben from boston

is posada single because im considering going gay for him

  384. belial

“We’ve got to focus on the great plays. Those are what we tune in for!”

So that’s how pathetic this team has become, huh? Now you have to focus on lone bright spots from a dismal team playing another dismal game?

That’s what happens to KC Royals fans or TB Rays fans.

It’s disgraceful that this is the status of the New York Yankees.

  385. SJ44

Joba Chamberlain has barely 100 career innings and has only been in AA for a month. He isn’t anywhere close to being ready to pitch on Saturday.

    TK,

The only guy who could be a “spot” reliever is Chamberlain and I don’t think they want to mess with him in that role right now. Remember, he had a hamstring early in the year and they are being very careful with him.

I think Ohlendorf could be a guy that could help in the bullpen if he continues to pitch well in AAA, which he has since he has come back from his injury. It would require some roles to shift. Probably Vizcaino to the 8th inning role and Ohlendorf slip into the 6th or 7th role.

Most likely, Karstans could also be that guy, if he doesn’t end up being the 5th starter.

I just don’t believe in ruining young pitchers, who aren’t ready for the majors, to fill out a 5th starter role. I don’t know of any sane ML organization who is doing it and I don’t see any reason for the Yankees to do it.

  386. belial

“is posada single because im considering going gay for him”

you act like you already are.

  387. ben from boston

    haha jeff calm yourself

  388. Chicago Dave

    Brian M –

Alberto Gonzalez can’t even hit his weight at SWB right now (which was his rap in the D-Backs system as well)…How do you see him as a potential major-league quality utility guy? We already have one Wil Nieves, after all!! ;)

  389. Mike S.

Edwar last pitched vs. the Angels on July 6th. Just great. Just what a guy who relies on his change needs for the next time he comes in…to be too strong.

    Sigh.

  390. migames

Kevin Easler, indeed, BUT he Cant hold a candle next to Bobby Meacham

  391. T.J.

SJ44 Welcome back dude. I miss reading your comments.

  393. Dr. Acula

    Cano!!

  394. T.J.

    Cano’s been playing much better

  395. Andrea

“It’s disgraceful that this is the status of the New York Yankees.”

So you watch, ignoring what they’re doing and only concern yourself with the outcome? I watch this team because I am a fan. I am a fan because they typically play good baseball. Even when they lose, it is usually a good game to watch. I’m not talking lone bright spots, I’m just saying we have to remember what’s fun about watching baseball. It’s fun to watch Andy Phillips making a diving stop of a base hit. It’s fun to watch Jeter make his crazy jumping throw. It’s fun to watch Posada try to run the bases, the poor chap.

And no, ben, Posada’s not single. He has a wife, who really likes to show off her cleavage.

  396. belial

great play by Wells. now that’s proper fundamental baseball.

  397. Chicago Dave

“Kevin Easler, indeed, BUT he Cant hold a candle next to Bobby Meacham”

So, it’s come down to Meacham now, has it! OK, fine…I’ll raise you Wayne Tolleson and Lenn Sakata!

  398. Alan

I am positive that if we get a 3 run homer now, we will have the 7 I said we needed….

  399. Wait Til Next Year

I saw Joba pitch this week; I have seen DeSalvo pitch too many times. I’ll tell you this– I’d rather see Joba. You take your picks; I’ll take mine. Let’s see what happens Saturday. You may want to re-visit this issue.

  400. Chicago Dave

Can’t expect Andy to keep getting clutch hits…

  401. TKinDC

Thanks SJ – I just look at what detroit did with Zumaya or ChiSox did with Jenks and wonder whether the live arms are multi-purpose or if I have to wait until they are 1’s or 2’s in the rotation.

I have high hopes for them and the ability we will have to make the big team better by trading the weaker ones.

  402. Brian M

    Well said SJ.

Franchise will soon be back in the rotation, Kartens will be in the 6th/7th. The only questions now are what do we do with Igawa when they return and do we have another West coast trip coming up so we can dispose of Farnsworth out in the desert?

We rushed Phil to the Show too soon the others can wait.

  403. ben from boston

rocco- i think that harvey is stuck in canos body

  404. Andrea

    I really love Andy Phillips.

  405. Mike S.

    alright andy

  413. ben from boston

andy is showing he deserves to he here hes the bat they told us phelps has and the glove we know doug has. or at least so far it is

  414. jennifer

I love Andy P!!! :D I’m so happy for him!!

  415. Chicago Dave

I wonder if any other team holds DeSalvo in any sort of esteem right now? If so, Cashman needs to pull the trigger. I have a feeling DeSalvo is having a career year at SWB, but he will never be a decent major league starter for any length of time. Might as well trade him while the going’s good!

  416. Dr. Acula

    —We Love Yooooooou, Andy

    —Yes, we do!

  417. Rocco

i wonder what belial thinks of Andy Phillips

Ben, no Cano is about 200 lbs lighter ;)

  418. T.J.

What a play by Phillips. He’s been effective in the past games

  419. ben from boston

is anyone watching the cubs and san fran on tv? what a great game

  420. Joey_V

SJ44 – When is a pitcher ready to pitch at the big league level? Let’s do a small sample of pitchers around the AL majors that are all under 25 years of age and probably would never get a chance in the Bronx.

    Jared Weaver – Angels – 6-5/3.36 – Age 24
    Francisco Rodriguez – 3-2/2.16/24 saves – 25

    Chad Gaudin – Oakland – 8-4/3.18 – 24

    Felix Hernandez – Seattle – 6-4/3.66 – 21
    Brandon Marrow – 3-2/3.89 – 22
    Eric O’Flaherty – 6-0/2.03 – 21 (the Yanks couldn’t hit him)

    Jeremy Bonderman – Detroit – 10-1/3.50 – 24
    Andrew Miller – 4-3/3.35 – 22

    Fausto Carmona – Cleveland – 11-4/3.77 – 23

I say bring up Chamberlain and Hughes and the studs we have in the minors. As a fan, Mussina, Igawa, et al aren’t cutting it. I imagine that most 20 year old AA or AAA pitchers believe they’re good enough to pitch in the bigs. Why not let hem show their stuff?

  421. Chicago Dave

Coto and Skinner…Man, those were good! OK, let’s see…Let’s go with pitchers…Alfonso Pulido and Cecilio Guante!!!

  422. Alan

belial ,,,,dude, GO AWAY…you are a Cancer to this blog…can you possibly be more negative ?

  423. Mike S.

Talk about a guy who is overdue….Damon up now.

  424. TKinDC

    Chicago Dave-

The US Attorney General has enough problems with incompetence without you pointing out that he can’t perform on the diamond.

    :)

  425. Andrea

ben–why do you say that about Harvey and Cano?

I love when Melky gets excited like that.

  426. ben from boston

rocco if we ignore him hell go away. calling me gay. OH NO PULLING OUT THE BIG GUNS. haha rocco 200 hundred pounds lighter but hes still got anger in his bat. i like how you notice that hes skinnier not the obvious fact hes about ten times as dark as harvey

  427. ben from boston

harvey was a marine. hes a jerk but he could obviously crush the you know what out of the ball if bouncers dont hold him back

  428. Dr. Acula

    Bwhwhwhahahhahah

    Melky!! Melky!! Melky!!

why is Towers freak’n ?? is he whining about the umps?

  429. belial

“I wonder if any other team holds DeSalvo in any sort of esteem right now?”

With the way he nibbles and is afraid of contact? He’s just a throw in for any prospective deal.

  430. Rocco

i’m not racist like Joe Torre (joke)

  431. migames

I was ready to break out Guante. Good Call on that one….Paul Zuvella? Tim Stoddard?

  432. Alan

    CUBS WIN !!!

  433. SJ44

Its not a question of “revisiting” whether or not DeSalvo is better than Chamberlain. Of course Chamberlain has a bigger upside. But, he’s not ready to pitch in the majors right now.

I’d rather see Joba in the majors to stay, when he is ready, than to pitch him on Saturday when its WAY too early for him to begin his ML career. There is too much data out there which shows how many careers of young pitchers have been ruined because they were rushed to the majors.

Another big hit by Andy Phillips. You have to be happy for him. He is doing a helluva job for this team right now.

  434. Tseng

This ump is being nailed. Karma for missing that Wells call?

  435. Jeff NJ

    Cleveland getting hammerred tonight.

  436. JeffG

Ben, I’m calm. Heck, I’m catatonic after watching Torre do this since he lost Nelson/Stanton/Mendoza. What does it take for Cashman to take his 135 pound frame down tot he dugout and body slam Joe until Joe brings in someone OTHER than one of his “boys”?

I love Joe, don’t get me wrong. I don’t think there is another manager in baseball who could have handled the egos, George and NY the way he has. But the man is a butcher when it comes to managing a bullpen. Jack-the-Ripper level butcher. Ted Bundy type butcher. Sanjay on American Idol butcher. Evil.

  437. Andrea

I’m glad Cano is back on track. I was getting tired of hearing people say to trade him.

I don’t know what it is, but there is something I like about Matt DeSalvo. I hope he can live up to my expectations.

  438. Ben

We need to DL (or bench) Damon. He has got to get healthy and/or get himself straightened out. He’s becoming an albatross. Good thing we only have 2 1/2 years left on his contract.

  439. ben from boston

i know alan good game right? guys philips: 9 rbis in 56 ABS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats a hot start. carl tells us on bbtonight that curt through a simulated game. raise your hand if you hate him

  440. Chicago Dave

    Jennifer –

Now, I never said Andy WOULDN’T come through…I just meant to say you can’t keep expecting him to get those clutch hits. Hey, I like Andy as much as any Yankee fan!!!

  441. Chicago Dave

I would rather DH Miguel Cairo then Johnny Damon right now…

  442. Jeff NJ

You know re the Torre racist thing, does Sheffield not realize that his comments are so constantly ridiculous that they don’t mean anything? I mean if Jeter or even an ex Yankee like Strawberry said it then it means something, nothing ever comes out of Sheffield’s mouth that is credible anymore. He’s like the old guy bs’ing in the barbershop.

  443. ben from boston

haha rocco, andrea, and i holding down the club. rocco what do you think of andrea as the vice president?

  444. Wait Til Next Year

SJ, we will agree to disagree– aimiably. Normally I would agree, but this guy is special– and DeSalvo is decidedly not> And the Yankees have no marin of error.

  445. Global Warming

“As far as Damon is concerned, who is the alternative right now? They don’t have anybody else. Giambi started working out today in Tampa. He thinks he can be back in a couple of weeks. If that happens, then they have a real DH again.

Until then, there isn’t anybody else they can put in the role.”

    SJ44,

Damon is hittng 240 with a career low in OPS. He’s not playing the field and his value with his bat is zilch. He is wasting the DH spot on our team. This team can use the extra power from that spot.

There is absolutely no reason why Shelly Duncan can’t be given a shot as the teams DH. Giambi is at least a month away, in that time we can shelf Damon and bring up Duncan as the DH.

Damon heals up and comes back with Giambi and you have options to explore later on.

As for Chamberlain going to the pen. That would be a monumental mistake, let’s see– have him continue his growth starting in AA or let him rot in our pen pitching once a week in lackluster blowouts.

  446. Andrea

Why is Kay talking about the Sheffield interview? was he not announcing when it first happened?

  447. Andrea

Sorry. I take it back. Now I know why he brought it up.

  448. Wait Til Next Year

    That is margin.

  449. ben from boston

hahaha shef “kind of said torre discriminates against players of AA decent” hahaha

  450. tonyb

We used to make fun of Henry Coto all the time – hahaha. I believe he hit one into the black once. All I know is we sure could use Al Holland in the bullpen right now ;-)

  451. ben from boston

andrea i was thinking the same thing. wait i zoned out who was crying?

  452. Rocco

i wonder if curt had a simulated bloody sock in his simulated game.

  453. Chicago Dave

“I was ready to break out Guante. Good Call on that one….Paul Zuvella? Tim Stoddard?”

Zu-veee!!! I loved that guy! Seriously, though, you read my mind on Stoddard!! I was going to bust out his name next…

How about a couple of more ex-catchers…Mark Salas and Don Slaught!

  454. ben from boston

  457. CB

On bringing Joba up from the minors:

A lot of people put a goal for pitchers to throw between 300-400 innings in the minors before calling them up.

That said there are obvious exceptions. The Tigers have gotten incredible productivity in their drafts the past few years by picking guys – Verlander and Miller and bringing them up within a year or so.

They showed Joba’s game on TV this past Saturday. He looked much better than he did even in the Futures game.

He has dominant stuff – the fast ball is exceptional – sitting at 97-98 late into the game. But the slider is just nasty. Big league hitters will not be able to consistently hit either.

That said he really would benefit from staying in the minors and refining his third pitch. He’s going to need that in the majors and right now it’s just not there.

Also, the deepest he’s ever gone in a game was 6 1/3 innings.

As long as Phil is coming back there’s no reason to call him up. To bring him up for spot starts at this point is worth it.

Should the Yankees make a strong push and make the playoffs however, they may consider calling him up and putting him in the pen. That’s what Stick Micheal recommended with Phil last year (instead they wound up throwing Wright)

That’s a tough call – it could turn out well e.g. the Cardinals last year. Or terrible – La Russa still talks about how calling Rick Ankiel up for the playoffs may have ruined his pitching career

    Joey V:

I am not altogether sure why, but baseball is much harder to learn and play well vs. other sports.

Small samples are useless, especially when you don’t include or know what they had done in the years leading up to your stats.

Liriano was a PHENOM for what, 2/3 of a season? and then he was cooked. I bet he will be great when he comes back (and H.Sanchez to (fingers crossed)).

IMHO—It is the hardest game to learn and play well, and that is why it is so fun to watch.

  464. Dave K

Proctor is getting hit hard.. One more!

No this is his first game back.

  467. Brian M

I’d give up with this since I’m sure noone cares, but that blog got me mad so here my reponse to the analysis of the 1st base moves.

Minky – Cash wanted a big bat. There were none. So he took a guy who would play great D, have an OK bat, handle NY, and cut down on ARods throwing errors – thus making him feel comfortable enough to have a career yr. For the enormous sum of $1.5m and the future crushing commitment of 1 yr. Did I mention that our staff ace is a ground-ball pitcher?

Phelps – this is my fav, not cos Phelps was a good move, but because the analysis of it was so over the top.

Cash took the best 1st baseman he could get – Minky. But he knew Minky isn’t going to give him the offense he wants all the time, plus the lineup is very heavily left handed, so he decided to get a righty option for 1st base.

As Cash said at the time – for 20K why not give yourself another option? He gave up basically nothing to make sure he had cover. It didnt work out great but it wasnt a big risk and was never seen as anything more than a ‘give it a go’ move.

So who is the great prospect whose innings he stole???? OH yeah we don’t have any. Plus in spring there are multiple lineups playng and simulated games and extended BPs, lots of time for people to shine. Phillips had a whole year in NY and a lot on his plate during the spring. Eric Duncan will never make the NY team. Phelps didn’t get in anybodys way.

He was a low risk move and Cash should be held responsible? Perhaps they were kidding when they wrote that? Maybe they were dizzy? It is possible that nearby gas leak had them both feeling a little woozy.

And Phelps was never meant to play much and didn’t until Minky was hurt so lets not get too carried away. He was a right handed option for giving Minky a rest and playing against the odd pitcher who owned him. There were no good options out there so he gave himself another chance to get lucky.

  468. Jeff NJ

    enough Proctor, it’s Edwar time!

When Sheffield and Kenny Lofton are criticizing you, you honestly don’t have a whole lot to worry about. Two complete idiots with massive chips on their shoulders…There is a reason they have both played for so many teams!

I hope Sheffield tanks for Detroit in the playoffs just like he did for the Yanks. Remember, the guy who proclaimed the Red Sox were done and then promptly stopped hitting while the Red Sox stormed back to beat us in the ‘04 playoffs? What a bastard Sheffield is…Sorry, but it’s true…He’s despicable.

  471. Rocco

    Really Myers? Great.

  472. jennifer

NOOOOO we don’t want Mike in the game. Get it DONE SCOTT!

  473. Alan

  474. Cumberberg

dear god, did proctor really just walk zaun? he’s nibbling at the corners when he should be going after a guy like that! i really do root for scottie but why is he in there for inning #2???

  475. SJ44

Its not a question of age re: Joba. Its a question of health and experience. He is just starting out in his career.

Some of the guys on your list had the chance to pitch on teams going nowhere. Its not how the Yankees do it since they still think they have a chance at the playoffs. You aren’t a chance to compete for the playoffs playing AA players this year.

Joba had forearm tendonitis last year and a hamstring this year. He has barely 100 professional innings in the books. What’s the point of risking him? It makes no sense. Not the least of which is the fact he isn’t on the 40 man roster and that would necessitate a roster move I am sure they aren’t looking to make right now. Especially starting the service time clock on a 21 yr old kid.

Carmona? Think about this for minute. Last year, he was AWFUL. I mean, AWFUL. If he was playing in NY, and pitched like that, fans would have run him out of town. He would have never had a second chance in NY. Fans, and media, have no patience with young players.

In Cleveland, they stuck with him, made him a starter, and he has been great. However, he had more minor league innings than Chamberlain.

King Felix has already been on the DL 3 times in his career and he has more pitches he can throw for strikes than Joba.

I have seen Joba pitch 7 times this year. He has an electric fastball. His slider is good, nice tilt, but can be better. His changeup is a work in progress. Until he can throw 3 pitches for strikes, in any situation, and get more innings under his belt, there is no way he is ready to pitch in the majors.

  476. jennifer

    He got it done!! :D

  477. BBFan

To the positive thinking club ONLY!!!

Chi Sox are beating up on Cleveland 11-2.
If these scores hold i.e, Cleveland loses and Yanks win, we will be just 6 games behind in WC in the loss column!

Is there still doubt about Yankees being serious players in the WC?

  478. Alan

  482. Chicago Dave

  483. BBFan

Torre needs to win our trust!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  484. TKinDC

I don’t mean to cause trouble but I thought I read about Joba getting into a bar fight and getting hurt. Is that an urban legend?

  485. Brian M

Villone – He was terrible in the spring, everyone was saying cut him loose, his velocity was way down and he couldn’t find the strike zone with a map and a torch. Instead of cutting ties, Cash gave Bean a chance, let Villone work himself into shape and back onto the team. Let us all stand up and applaud. Villone isnt great now but at the moment he is an option worth having.

How many games did not having Villone cost us early on? Zero.

How many batters could Villone have gotten out in April/ May? Zero.

  488. SJ44

    Global,

Giambi said today he thinks he could be back in two weeks. Optimistic on his part? Perhaps.

I don’t disagree on Damon. I just came back from watching the series in Tampa and, honestly, he was the one guy that stood out to me in the fact that I just don’t see him “finding it” this year.

He has to be really hurting because his bat is so slow right now, he isn’t even hitting balls hard in BP.

Duncan? I don’t know. I have seen a lot of him and I am not impressed. He only handles fastballs and often chases the high fastball too much. That’s a tough call but, I see your point re: Damon. They can’t go on much longer with him as the DH and leading off. Its tough to watch.

  489. LathamJoe

Tonight, the bullpen managment resembles an old episode of The Three Stooges!

Your points on Joba are well taken.

One thing- he had triceps tendinitis last year not forearm. Forearm tendinitis suggests elbow involvement and triceps doesn’t.

  496. Dimitri

I’m having trouble understanding why are people trashing Torre. We’re talking about the same Torre who won us 4 WS and division titles after division titles. Why place the blame on him because the players are underperforming this year?

  497. neil

While Procotor throws 35 pitches, Edwar Rameriz contines to rot amongst the ice-cream bars Corey Lidle(RIP) left behind.

Oh well, atleast Proctor managed to K Stairs. But Seriously why don’t we see more for Edwar

With Shelley hitting # 24 tonight, DL ing Damon’s .240 and bringing up Shelley Duncan to DH is making more and more sense, even with the holes in Shelley’s swing.

  532. ben from boston

    eff that put in mariano

  533. Justin

i truly believe that was one of the best innings of the year right there for the yanks. just such a relief to get a quick, 1-2-3 8th in a close game they need to win. no wasted pitches, no wildness, just a clean, solid inning. anyone agree?

  534. Chicago Dave

Who are all these scrubs who pitch for Toronto? Where do they find these guys? Rejects from the Maple Leafs’ practice squad?!!

  535. mel

    Dr.,

what would you think about the yanks getting dimitri? there arent any rumors but hes on the block so why not/ what would you guys think?

  540. Rocco

i dont think MO is available… Vizcaino SHOULD get the 9th.

  541. ben from boston

winfield killed my seagull hahahah hahahaha hahahahha great name

  542. Chicago Dave

I’d take Dmitri Young if he comes cheap…At least the guy seems to play hard and makes the most of the (middling) talent he has.

  543. Andrea

mel: Matsui is a REALLY big guy, especially for a Japanese dude. I never realized it until I ganked my uncle’s corporate season tickets one day and was super close to the home dugout (that’s right. I need to steal for seats like that. What of it? I am but a lowly grad student. When I have to pay for my own tickets, I go bleacher style). I think Matsui at one point was standing next to a bat boy and he just looked monstrous. It’s kind of surprising how small Melky is too. I’d like to see Melky stand next to Paul O’Neill. He’s what, like 7 foot 9?

  544. Winfield killed my seagull

i think it would depend on the outlook for giambi and what that fat meatball’s (dimitri) contract is

  545. Global Warming

    Agreed Mike S,

For someone who has “holes” in his swing with Duncan, he sure is raking in the minors. How can they at the very least not give this man a shot as the DH?

I don’t know what Damon’s deal is. Is it that nonsense about never being on the DL? Time to toss the ego away Johnny because your starting to hurt the team. Go on the DL and heal up.

As for who’s pitching the 9th. It’s not Farnsworth, he pitched 2 days in a row which in itself is a milestone.

Depsite Mo pitching 2 days in a row, he’ll probably get the ball again with the prior All Star Break and everything. That or Ron Villone will close.

  546. Brian M

    My election campaign

I will be running for President of the Positive Thinking Party, The Reasons to Be Cheerful Brotherhood, and the Blind Faith Group.

    Here is my manifesto-

I think that once Franchise returns we will have the best rotation in the league. (Muss and Andy will be fine – Roger is gonna get mad and average 7 innings per outing)

The inprovement in our rotation will help our pen. As will Cash trading for a new set up guy!! Put money on it. Otsuka/ Gagne or Cordero will be here before Aug.

The Red Sox have had more ‘I can’t believe they scraped a win there’ games this season than any team in baseball. The Yanks more ‘I can’t believe they lost another by 1 run’ games than anyone. The law of averages says it can’t last.

Our line-up is starting to hit.

Kartens will help the pen more than people realise.

The Red Sox have Lugo, Crisp, and Drew in their line up. (And they are ony paying them about $30m ;) )

Mo will be better in the 2nd half. Okajima will be worse.

Beckett isnt capable of playing a whole season of good baseball. Tavares isnt capable of playing a whole game of good baseball. Lugo cant even manage a good at bat.

And last of all, ARod wants paid!! No slumps for him.

  547. Chicago Dave

    Andrea:

Perhaps I’m showing my age here (not very hip, I know!), but what, pray tell, does “ganked” mean, and what is the word’s derivation, exactly? ;)

  548. Cumberberg

    i’d welcome d.young — as a dh. i don’t want him at andy’s expense.

  549. Joey_V

TKinDC==> After more research this is what I found around the some other teams.

    Joe Smith – Mets – 2-0/2.68 – age 23

    Coles Hamels – Phillies – 11-4/3.83 – 23
    Kyle Kendrick – 4-0/3.82 – 22

    Carlos Marmos – cubs – 2-0/0.88 – 24
    Sean Marshall – 4-3/3.48 – 24

    Yovani Gallardo – Brewers – 1-1/2.83 – 21
    Carlos Villanueva – 6-1/3.41 – 23

    Matt Capps – Pirates – 4-4/2.37 – 23

    Michah Owings – Arizona – 5-4/4.84 – 24

    Manny Corpas – Rockies – 3-2-2.45 – 24

    Chad Billingsley – Dodgers – 6-0/3.26 – 22
    Jonathan Broxton – 3-2/2.68 – 24

    Justin Germano – Padres – 6-3/3.55 – 23

    Matt Cain – Giants – 3-10/3.53 – 22

Whether this sample suffices to show that pitchers are “ready” when they get to the bigs and pitch well, I don’t know. But I was surprised to find so many young upcoming pitchers around the majors while the Yankees have only one pitcher under 25 on their current roster. I would welcome bringing in some new blood and creating some excitement on the team.

  550. Chicago Dave

Cumberberg – Hey, Dmitri can move surprisingly quick for a fattie!!!

  551. Andrea

ben: yeah, you really gotta watch those nambla guys. They’ll get you every time.

  552. Dave K

    Chicago Dave:

Per Urban Dictionary .. Gank means “To steal or take something that does not belong to you.”

I think its kind of funny that this is where I found the definition

  553. ben from boston

true cumberberg obviously id rather have andy here doing well than dimitri but dimitri has had troubles so i think were all rooting for him

  554. TKinDC

    Chicago Dave –

The GM down here in DC is Bowen.

Bowen is code for A$$hole. If you caught his act on Cold Pizza you know he is a moron. His rep is that he asks for the equivalent of Phil Hughes for a rent a player.

Last year he f’ed up the Soriano trade and had to settle for draft picks when Carlos Lee drew real talent!!!

Needless to say, I’m not a fan.

  555. Cumberberg

Brian M — I agree with you that Boston played better than they had reason to expect for the first part of the season and will continue to slow. And I continue to believe (stubornly perhaps) that the Yanks are a much better team than their record would indicate. Now whether that translates into a 10-game swing…

  556. Winfield killed my seagull

ganked. (v) to steal or take. pilfer

Man, Kevin Long really looks like Lidle.

  558. Chicago Dave

Guess Andrea is “urban,” huh?! ;)

  559. ben from boston

  560. Cumberberg

look, i like dmitri, but does he make the dp that andy made yesterday? i do not think so.

  561. Chicago Dave

Wow, so everyone else knew what “ganked” meant but me! I seriously need to stop blogging and get out more!!

  562. BBFan

We need only seven game swing to win WC. Let us meet that goal first and them aim for the division. Once we are in the playoffs, all bets are off for Boston!

  563. Rocco

    ben from boston

    what’s your IM name?

  564. Dave K

The thing that has been real fun (though at times extremely frustrating) about these past few games is that each time the pitcher has given back the lead or let Tampa/Toronto come back to tie the game – the offense keeps fighting back. I have not seen any quit in this team and I like it

  565. Dave K

Regarding my previous post, the frustrating part is the pitching giving up runs, not the fact that the hitters are fighting back

  566. Andrea

Chicago Dave: I am a bit urban. I was wadering around the English countryside this past week (no joke) and had a near asthma attack simply because someone was mowing a long. I don’t belong near nature.

gank is basically a combination of grab and yank. In my experience, it’s used usually when it’s something that you have permission, i.e. ganking my uncles corporate box seats to the Stadium. I did not steal them, but I certainly did not pay him.

  567. ben from boston

    oh thank heaven

  568. mel

    Chicago Dave,

Did you see the highlight of Dmitri catching a pop fly and then falling on his butt and almost doing a backward roll? He looked drunk cuz his ‘mates helped him up. Then he hit the grand slam in the next inning. Priceless.

  569. Chicago Dave

“look, i like dmitri, but does he make the dp that andy made yesterday? i do not think so.”

True, but does Andy have a cool-ass ‘fro that makes his cap fall off whenever he starts running? Hell no!!! Score one for Dmitri…

  570. T.J.

I always start to smile when I see Rivera on the mound.

  571. Mike S.

    Seconding TK.

Bowden is an idiot who knew Sori was leaving, but still asked for 1/2 the universe for him and wound up seeing Sori leave and getting nothing for him.

He’d ask for 1/4 of the universe for Dmitri.

  572. Cumberberg

BBFan — There’s clearly no shame in the WC. It’s certainly worked for others the past several years. Still, I’m a Yankee fan through and through. I can’t think of the Red Sox taking the AL East. Genetics forbid me from giving up on the Division until we’re statisticaly eliminated.

  573. TKinDC

    Joey-

I’ll go you one better –

He had a sprained ankle in extended spring training and there were rumors that he might be out for the entire year.

He had one hit – a home run. On the scouting scale of 20-80 he’s considered to have 80 power. He’s 17.

True, there is no shame in the WC. There IS shame, however, in what the Mets do–put up banners with their WC wins. That’s just plain weird.

Chicago Dave: I’m not in London anymore. I was for a little bit. I got back on Friday night. I was there for an academic conference. I was staying a few blocks from Russell Square. It is a great place. too expensive to be there for an extended period of time because the American dollar is useless.

Since I wrote this earlier – I was really mad and ranting – here it is. My take on the Muss and Pettitte deals.

Mussina – It is a no-brainer which shouldn’t even need defending. Muss will pitch better in the second half. Great signing.

If I were to defend it I would point out that the move was made in a market in which Marquis coming off a 6+ ERA season got a $21M 3 yr deal. Muss who had a $5M buyout or $17M option resigned for what amouts to $17M over 2 yrs (when you subtract the buyout which we didnt have to pay). This coming off a 3.51 ERA season. Cash wanted short term deals for pitchers because he has lots of guys coming through. He knew they weren’t ready this year though and next yr you want a few vets there to carry the load and help some guys develop without having to be the staff ace. 2 year deals were perfect for this. Your alternatives were Marquis for $21M, Zito for $1BN, or pray for Pavano to be healthy. I’m fine with Cash’s choice.

Pettitte – see answer for Muss. He wont pick up his option if he isnt in shape to play. No risk deal. He’s a man of his word and when he says he can play, he means – I expect a sub 4 ERA.

  601. Jeff NJ

past perfect of gank: I had ganked, she had ganked, etc.

  610. Brian M

As for the assertion that the Yanks should be spending some of the money spent on more worldwide scouting and development – Cashman has personally turned the direction of the franchise back to scouting and developing prospects, spending big to draft hard to sign guys out of slot (since we’ll never draft top 10), spending huge on signing international prospects, scouting internationally and developing the franchises links in Japan and China to improve scouting and coaching there. I don’t know the figures but if any team spends within $10M of the Yanks in scouting, signing and development this year I’d be stunned.

My question is, do Cashman and Torre have the cajones to make Damon disappear(bench, DL, mars, whatever) and trade for D. Young as DH? I say cajones because, you know, the millions Damon is getting makes it look sort of bad. But it’s almost like Damon is already gone. The only evidence of his existence is the out he leaves behind.

  625. Andrea

chicago Dave: not really. Unfortunately, I landed at JFK at about 6:30, got through customs by 7:30, took the airtrain/subway into the city, go to MSG by 8:15, put crap in my sister’s car and went to a concert at MSG that had started at 8. I continued to go to concerts saturday and Sunday night and it was just bad news. Today is my first day trying to actually chill and have real life. It didn’t work out so well. Stupid time difference. The weridest part is that the sun doesn’t really set in Europe (I was in France as well as England) until around 10pm, so it’s hard to get used to the time when you can’t get used to the sun.

Anyways, good win tonight, hopefully we can rack up a dozen runs or so tomorrow for Andy and avoid using Mo on a 4th straight day.

Also, Edwar Ramirez called me from the bench and said he’s bored and kind of tired of playing video poker during the game. If someone could pass that on to Joe, that’d be great.

Still, good win, let the march to playoff contention continue.

  631. Andrea

chicago Dave: I went to 3 Dispatch shows. They’re pretty much an indy band but they’re amazing musicians and amazing people. They did 3 shows, even though they kind of broke up 3 years ago, and sold out MSG all 3 nights. Every seat was sold, including the seats behind the stage. And MSG is no small potatoes. All the proceeds went to benefit Zimbabwe.

  632. gayle

Speaking of scouts has anyone ever found out who the scout/s were that recommended Igawa. I just dont get it, what exactly did they see in this guy that made them think he would do anything.

I dont buy that you just sign a guy for the kind of money the team paid including posting fee for a piece of junk in retailiation for the Dice K signing and thinking you had to make a splash. I certainly hope that whomever it was that they now have a new job or at the very least Cashman thinks long and hard about taking their advice in the future.

  633. Nettles vs. Lee

Igawa had a very good record in Japan. He had something like 2.7 ERA and was the strikeout king in his league. It is not translating into success in America. I guess there is lot of gap between Japanese baseball and American baseball.

  637. CB

    Gayle,

The yankees weren’t the only team to bid on Igawa and the second highest bid probably wasn’t that much less.
There had to be some group of scouts who did like him.

    Brian M,

Strong posts throughout. Many of us are just tired of the team grasping for quick-fix older players at the expense of developing the organization internally through players that come up through the system. That was the basis of the last dynasty and if they’re to repeat that success again it’ll be through the system.

  638. Chicago Dave

Nemecizer – I agree with you… I haven’t been critical of Pete… but for gosh sakes it is a message board on the Internet! I think us fans who post with something relative or insightful – ignore the dumb comments. You can get a little too sensitive… the info’s good… but quit with the whining… if we’re such a nuisance… then just eliminate the posts… and keep your blurbs only. I hope I’m not offending you by posting and not emailing (does that make me less of a man?)

  653. Lil' Jimmy Norden

Well, it’s pretty funny that Pete has the ability to call people out for being idiots. So many people hide behind the net to be jerks…I loved that guys work place being thrown out there. Bet he shuts up toot sweet! You go Pete!

  654. E-ROC

Hey, we won today!! Iggy goes 5 innings and gave up ONLY 3 runs. He also threw 115 PITCHES. :( That’s downright scary. Andy Phillips is clutch again. The bullpen pitched well. We should be able to take a sweep.

  655. Marius

Pagliarulo isn’t too far off in his analysis. I don’t know if he is being entirely fair. He kinda misses the good things that Cashman has done, like getting A-Rod and getting A-Rod to play 3rd base. Getting Texas to pay a nice chunk and only giving up Soriano.
The opt out clause wasn’t Cashman’s doing. Just came along with the contract already in place.

He also missed that Cashman had to work with the mess that Steinbrenner left him. That in and of itself is a mountain.

I can’t really say Cashman is a good GM, but he isn’t as bad as they make him out to be. I will be happy when a replacement for Cashman takes over and I do hope it’ll happen sooner than later.

As I have been saying since the start, the Yankees have zero depth and that is the fault of Cashman. Well, some say we have pitching depth. We trotted out all our pitching depth this season and one by one they went down, which shows how fragile they are or that they just can’t pitch on the major league level.

We have Hughes and not much more. We have some pitchers that can compete, but nothing stunning down there.

I can’t say 2008 will be a better season than this one. I actually think it’ll be worse.
    Mussina
    Pettite
    Igawa
    Hughes
    Wang
Not exactly a winning rotation other than 2 of them.

Bullpen? I just don’t see it for 2008 with what is left over from this year and coming up in the minors.
Cashman better be a buyer now cause he has to start developing a team for next season.

  656. Marius

Oh, and Peter, stop being so sensitive and giving attention to the ones who come here seeking attention.
We usually can take care of the trolls who come on board and usually make them look dumb.
It’s the net. Things will be said. Don’t give in to them by deleting their posts and making announcements about it.
They look worse if you leave the actual post and let us stand up and show our support for you and the Yankees.
Worry about the Yankees, not the trolls on your blog. You’ll be much happier that way on here :D

  657. Chuckles

    Marius,

Pete said that a lot of those comments were caught in the filter — which means there was questionable language in those posts.

By calling him out and telling everyone where the punk works, it’s a bit of a warning that Pete can track them.

I don’t see a problem with what Pete did. Sometimes, you have to call an @ss an @ass and defend yourself.

    Hey, we’re all human.

  658. Rob(Middletown, CT)

“We have Hughes and not much more. We have some pitchers that can compete, but nothing stunning down there.”

    Two words: Joba Chamberlain.

  659. Sherard

Chuckles said: “I don’t see a problem with what Pete did. Sometimes, you have to call an @ss an @ass and defend yourself.”

I do. You want to email the guy and tell him his boss probably expects him to use his time better ? – fine, but it’s across the line to post his employer on the blog.

There are better ways to deal with the problem than threatening someone’s livlihood.

  660. Tony NJ

The choice of Igawa over Lilly looks like its going to be the death of this team this year.

  661. Francis

Why shouldnt Pete defend himself when confronted by a jerk? If someone wants to take shots at Pete he should be prepared to face the consequences. Good for you, Pete.

A guy worried about his job shouldn’t be on a blog insulting someone that runs the blog. Pete has every right to call the coward out.

  662. Chuckles

    Sherard,

No it isn’t. You wanna act like a jackass — it sometimes has consequences.

Perhaps the guy crossed the line by berating Pete with profane language on a Yankee blog.

It was justified and something I hope Pete does more often to keep trolls away.

Fewer trolls is better for all of us.

  663. Mike Albany

The Yankees knew Igawa was terrible. Their own GM said he was a 5th starter. A soft tossing lefty with a straight fastball and inability to get any breaking ball over the plate. Doesn’t make adjustments. Has no composure.

Luckily after last night we won’t ever have to see him again.

  664. chris in fairfield

igawa is going to loose his spot in the rotation . good . damon is terrible and shouldnt be batting lead-off . hence , he is not doing his job . if damon continues to perform at this sub-par level you can throw his contract into the categorey of yet another bad contract .

just imagine if the yanks had vlad in right , beltran in center and matsui in left . all it would have taken was money .

  665. Chuckles

    Enough about Ted Lilly.

He’s been a .500 pitcher his entire career and wanted a 4-year deal at $40M+.

No thanks. Truthfully, I wasn’t a fan of the Igawa signing since Day 1. I didn’t want either of them.

Yankee fans often complain about immovable contracts and dead weight on this team and I have no doubt Lilly would be another one of those guys over the next few years while the Yanks are trying to get younger in the rotation.

I’d rather have Hughes in the rotation in August and September this season to gain the experience he needs for next season.

Lilly in the rotation right now means there wouldn’t be any room for Hughes when he comes back.

Lilly is also pitching in the worst division in MLB right now and not facing AL East lineups on a regular basis.

Also keep in mind that the Yanks once traded away Lilly and then passed on him again last off-season when he was practically begging to come back.

There has to be a reason why they’ve passed on this guy twice and I think it was the right decision based on his history.

  666. Jeff NJ

We won’t need Ted Lilly when Hughes is healthy. Igawa will slip into the loogy role.

Here is something encouraging for the faithful, winning percentages by month for our Yankees:

    April .391
    May .464
    June .577
    July .692

  667. bleeckerandsullivan.com

Igawa is horrible- if we never see him again, it would be one of the highlights this season.

  668. Marc

Why does Damon have to lead off. Am I the only one who would rather see Melky instead. Melk has a 9 game hit streak, is a better bunter, and bats about .35 higher.

  669. E-ROC

The most recent rumblings are coming from New York, where a possible trade of Johnson to the Yankees for right-handed reliever Scott Proctor is all the buzz. An A’s source said that the team hasn’t communicated with the Yankees in more than a week.

  670. Jeff NJ

    Quote from WasWatching Blog:

“Jesus Montero played his first game ever in the Yankees organization yesterday and he hit a homer. His Yankeeography will premiere later this week on YES.”

I guess his ETA would be about 2010, let’s give Jorge 3 years $40M.

  671. Steve

Jeff – Theres no way the yanks keep Montero at catcher. Have you seen the size of him? Kid’s 6′4 225 and hes not even 18 yet. Theyd be better of moving him to 1B so the wear and tear of being a catcher holds his potential back

  672. Mike S.

Not much more than Hughes? Has he seen or read about Trenton’s staff? The team ERA recently was 2.57. Ian Kennedy is 11-2, 1.71 combined this year.

As for buyers===with what? You got to give to get, and you are NOT giving up that young pitching.

Mussina instils no confidence in me. Esp. for 2008. I understand the need to sign him because the kids aren’t ready yet, but if they are in 2008, I’d rather see them than Muss. Muss has really been only average since 2001. With 100 equalling the average league ERA, here are Mussina’s ERA+ with the Yanks:

142, 108, 129, 98, 101, 125, 93. The 108 (2002) not much better than average, and three of the past four years are VERY average to slighly below. I’m worried about that ERA+ number dipping into the 80s next year. In only 3 of the 7 years with the Yanks has he been a significantly better pitcher than the league average.

In his last 23 games in which he got an AB, Melky has hit safely in 21 of them.

A point on the free agency. People do realize that the Yanks with the luxury tax were paying something like 1.40 to the dollar for a free agent, don’t you? A $100 million free agent for someone else becomes $142 mil for the Yanks because of the tax.

Lastly, KUDOS to Pete for calling the coward out. I wish it would happen on more blogs!

  673. TurnTwo

money doesnt matter for the yankees, so enough with the luxury tax “this player would have actually cost them this, and that’s just too expensive” nonsense. they’re getting caught up in pinching pennies on their rotation and their bench, and it’s burned cashman. i hold him accountable for this, but dont think he should get fired, mostly for what he’s done in building depth in our system.

and concerning the depth at Trenton… most talent evaluators, Chamberlain aside, dont see any of these guys as front line starters… Kennedy is like a 3/4, and the rest of these guys are rated 4/5s in a starting staff or bullpen arms. it’s excited to see the success they are having this year, but lets not just assume that because they’ve got a sub-3 ERA at Trenton, they can just step up and be just as good here next season. let’s get real here.

  674. NYY

Interesting game tonight. Halladay Vs Pettite. Halladay is comming of a rough outing against the Sox. aAndy Pettite is pitching very well. Halladay struggled against a so-so RedSox offense, Yankees and the redhot offense will rough up Halladay. The next 2 games r against 2 no-name pitchers for toronto. The Yankees will sweep the bluejays easily. RedHot Yankees.

  675. will

yeah, but when you have wang/hughes as 1/2, then chamberlin at 3, kennedy at 4, then one of the other guys or a FA to be the other starter, you’ve got possibly 3 ace type pitchers, a projected 3 as your 4th, then all you need is a 4/5 type. and that’s assuming you don’t bring in a 1-3 type free agent.

  676. Mike Albany

I’d like it if the Yanks starting rotation next yr was all home grown but I live in the real world.

If we get 2 home grown starters, thats good. 3? We should thank the Lord.

    5? Play Mega.

  677. Chuck

No lines crossed here, call out the jerks publicly. As long as our host doesn’t get obsessed with them, the occassional smack down is good. (OK, maybe a warning before posting the employer’s name — but if he is using a bogus email address, there may not be a method to give a private warning).

Anyway, eye on the ball folks — we are making up ground and can’t afford any skids here. Get Hughes healthy, dump Krazy Kyle, and keep winning series.

  678. E-ROC

I would rather keep Joba and Kennedy and Betances. If they are projected to be our a 3rd or 4th or 5th, it’s better than spending millions on pitchers who are past 30. Joba is the potential ace of the bunch. Betances has the potential to be better than all of them.

Yankees do have money to spend considering they play in a big city. That doesn’t mean you go and buy the base player available. The Yankees are trying to trim payroll; not add to it unless they pull off an Abreu/Lidle (RIP) trade. The Yankees “limit” as far as payroll is $200 million. Yeah, they may add someone like Clemens and make a mid season trade but that’s about it.

  679. Mike S.

“money doesnt matter for the yankees, so enough with the luxury tax”

Bull, Turn Two. Complete BS. Eventually you get tired of seeing YOUR luxury tax $$ going to help ANOTHER team beat YOUR brains out.

As for Trenton, what is wrong with the 4/5s? For the very near future, they have a 1 in Hughes, Wang is still there at 2, say Chamberlain a 3, so as for “the rest of your rated 4-5s, well then you have a crop to pick from– Not to mention either a FA signing, or using some of that talent in a deal? Just like Will stated.

As for putting this team together…let’s remember FIT. The best looking piece doesn’t necessarily fit the puzzle (think jigsaw puzzle). You need the piece that FITS.

  680. Jason

I’m definitely late on this but that websites analysis of Cashman was nothing short of horrible and showed a clear case of hindsight being 20/20. The bottom line is the yankees are still one of hte 5 best teams in baseball, but their record doesn’t reflect that. cashman assembled a playoff worthy baseball team, thats his job.

  681. LT

“Every Boston fan I know, and believe me, I’m surrounded by them hardcore, want him on the team, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about here.”
