Monday: RHP Josh Towers (4-5, 5.07) vs. LHP Kei Igawa (2-2, 7.14), 7:05

Tuesday: RHP Roy Halladay (10-4, 4.66) vs. LHP Andy Pettitte (5-6, 4.27), 7:05

Wednesday: RHP Shaun Marcum (5-3, 3.68) vs. RHP Roger Clemens (2-4, 4.20), 7:05

Thursday: RHP Dustin McGowan (5-5, 5.05) vs. RHP Chien-Ming Wang (10-4, 3.43), 1:05

Sorry about the lack of postgame notes on Sunday. I had an 8:40 flight out of Tampa and I had to hustle out of Tropicana Field. Bad traffic nearly cost me but I was able to catch the flight.

Many of the Yankees, especially Alex Rodriguez, said how happy they are for Andy Phillips. Here’s a guy who got his chance to play everyday last season but his priority was helping his wife fight cancer related to a lost pregnancy. Then his mother was nearly killed in a traffic accident in spring training.

Phillips was cut in spring training, cleared waivers then was used as a utility player at Scranton, playing mostly second base.

His wife and mom are healthy now and from Joe Torre on down, the Yankees are thrilled to see how Phillips is handling first base.

“Phillips has been awesome,” A-Rod said. “He’s been playing great defense and giving us some really good at-bats, which this team has needed. I’m happy for him.â€?

The Yankees rallied from three-run deficits twice in the last two days on the road. They hadn’t come back from a three-run deficit away from home since April 14.

It’s never too late to show some guts and maybe the Yankees have a run in them.

3 out of 4 games is the goal for this game, and unless a crazed fan runs out to the mound and gives Igawa a Charley Horse before he throws his first pitch, those 3 games will come in games 2, 3 and 4. But as always, have faith and GO YANKEES. I think that the Yankees WILL show some guts and the run has already started. 3 out of 4 from the DRAYS…then a Sweep OR 3 out of 4 from the Blue Jays….we can AND will start playing to our potential !!!

I meant 3 out of 4 games is the goal for this upcoming series…

the pitching match-ups remind me that we’ve only got about 13 days until Hughes-time!

    …knock on wood.

I gotta feeling this one will be 2-2. I hope I’m wrong though.

Tomorrow is going to be a slugfest

    *Bombers Take Flight*

July is a New York kinda town.

The Yanks posted a record of 16-8 in both 2006 and 2005 (7.2. – 7.31). Meanwhile, the Sawks posted records of 12-12 and 13-12, respectively.

The beat continues this year. So far this month the Yanks are 8-3, winning all three series, tossing 2 shut-outs, outscoring opponents 73 to 43, and more importantly winning 2 outta 3 one-run games. Overall, the Sawks are 5-5 this month, and there are 16 days left.

Remarkably, the push is occurring even though ARod is hamstrung (.170 3 HR 8 RBI).

4 consecutive 4 game series… when was the last time that happened?

And 5 if you count the suspended game… that’s a good question for Elias right there, when was the last time a team had 4 consecutive 4 game series…

That’s the attitude I like to see, Alan!

I really want to know why Kei Igawa was SO good in that game against the Red Sox where Karstens got the line drive to the leg. Bad teams are crushing him–so why did he shut down the Red Sox?

  9. Lil' Jimmy Norden July 16th, 2007 at 4:37 am

With Karstens and Hughes on their way back, you have to think that Kei needs a pretty decent outing here to stick around. That 7+ ERA wont cut it long term.

Whats the take on Igawa’s trade value? Anyone think he can be dealt?

  10. hmm July 16th, 2007 at 7:28 am

I think there are teams (esp. in the National League) who would want Igawa, but because of the posting money, Yankees are probably reluctant. I mean, his annual salary (for the luxury tax purposes) is extremely low even for a fifth starter. I, for one, actually believe that he can be a serviceable pitcher eventually, but probably not this year.

oh yeah, we all know what the yankees really need is to show off their guts. Thanks, joe

  12. E-ROC July 16th, 2007 at 8:14 am

Lil’ Jimmy Norden–I think the only teams that would take him are the Cardinals, Mets, and the Braves.

  13. Bill Porter July 16th, 2007 at 8:21 am

Thanks for giving that nice run to Andy. He’s been a favorite around here for a long time. It’s good to see the ball flying off his bat and that smile on his face again. Now big league fans are learning what every minor league fan from C-bus to Pawtucket and Norfolk and Richmond knows; this cat can play.

He held it together during some tough times and came through it with what has to be perceived as class and dignity. Now he’s delivering on the field. As fans if we can’t get behind that and cheer I think we need to ask ourselves what the hell we’re in this for anyway.

    Go Andy Go!

  14. Stef July 16th, 2007 at 8:35 am

Andy deserves some happiness. He’s been through the ringer. What a great guy. Talk about not being handed anything easily. He’s earned his shot. If Cashman brings a first baseman in at this point, my respect for Cashman will most definitely drop.

  15. chris in fairfield July 16th, 2007 at 8:56 am

i think we all knew phillps defense is above average . it was just a matter of him hitting . which , as we all see , he is doing . kudos to andy phillips for straightning the firstbase dilema out . now the only question is who plays first when dougie m. comes back ?

  16. Jake July 16th, 2007 at 9:01 am

This team isn’t dead yet. Would be nice to see a good performance from Igawa tonight but I won’t hold my breath. Hopefully the bats keep this up.

  17. Jim Clark July 16th, 2007 at 9:15 am

If Will Nieves were to bat against Kei Igawa, who would win?

  18. Lil' Jimmy Norden July 16th, 2007 at 9:28 am

Thanks E-Roc! I thought something like that as well. As soon as I saw it I said [Alda] YEEEESSSS! [/Alda]

  19. Lil' Jimmy Norden July 16th, 2007 at 9:36 am

If Will Nieves were to bat against Kei Igawa, who would win?

Neither, in fact we would all lose. The world would implode upon itself as 2 forces of mediocrity would collide resulting in an at bat that would never end.

Re: Igawa’s Great outing against Boston:

There is much less pressure on a guy to perform when he is brought in in an emergency situation. Anything the guy gives you is a plus.

  21. Locakes July 16th, 2007 at 10:45 am

    Does anyone know…
…if a player plays in the minor leagues and then gets called up to the majors and then sent back down, do they still get the major league minimum? For example if Phillips gets sent down again, will he get paid scrub money again or will he keep getting the $300k/year? It’s easy to forget sometimes that even a ballplayer making the minimum is still making WAY more than most normal folks.

  22. Basura July 16th, 2007 at 1:07 pm

    Locakes,

Most players on the cusp like Phillips most likely have a split contract – one amount while they’re in the majors and a (lot lower) amount while they’re assigned to the minors.
