Now this is a travesty
A reader alerted to me to the fact that the American Mustache Institute (yes, seriously) is having a contest for “Best Sports Mustache” and Don Mattingly is not a contestant.
This would be like voting for “Worst Free-Agent Signing Ever” and not including Carl Pavano.
Donnie Baseball had himself a serious mustache back in the day. There is a write-in box and hopefully he will get his due.

This has got to be one of the most entertaining blogs on the Yankees ever.
Pete, Mike Hampton is probably a worse deal than Pavano
LOL! Word up. Donny Baseball sure had a serious one. I think it hurts him that now he’s shaved.
As long as sal fasano and goose gossage are on there I am satisfied…
How does anyone besides Rollie Fingers win this anyway?
Hes like the Tiger Woods of the stache league.
Dreifort and Park are worse than Pavano.
At least Pavano is only a 4 yr deal.
Adam Morrison’s sorry ‘stache is there but Sal Fasano’s isn’t?
Please.
Sal Fasano is the runaway winner. How can you beat the Fu Manchu?
Speaking of worst travesty ever: Johnny Damon’s OPS since June 1 – .594!
Where is Shelley Duncan? Is Cashman trying to help this team or isn’t he?
Hughes is pitching for Trenton like RIGHT NOW
I’d have to go with Sal Fasano.
Can not wait to get Hughes back up– Pavano is horrible.
Donnie had the “bow-chicka-bow-bow” adult film mustache. I am disheartened that he has not kept it.
LMAO @ YankeeDudel
Maybe they are all Boston fans at the Mustache think tank.
Question
I keep hearing that Giambi is comming back in a couple
weeks. Is that a good thing? Does that mean we are going
to put girly arm Damon back in center because of how much
money he makes. It just reminds me of last year when Sheff
came back and it messed up the chemistry we had going.
I think Melky has earned cf and Damon should be the 4th
outfielder until we can find a taker this offseason.
oh by the way chisox 4 Cleveland 0 in the 4th
GO CHICAGO!!!
I think if Giambi is back in two weeks, he is the DH and Damon is on the bench.
I don’t see Melky coming out of CF.
They need Giambi. That’s the one bat short they are right now.
Jeter can leadoff and Abreu or Cano (probably better with Abreu) can bat second. I’d still keep Melky batting 9th because he seems comfortable in that spot.
I’d have Giambi-Arod-Matsui as my 3-4-5 hitters and you then get the offense back to what it was supposed to be at the start of the season.
I should send a photo in of me from about 10 years ago or of some friends of mine. We’d both get some consideration! Heck, my softball teammates nicknamed me “Mattingly”
H82Lose,
I am worried about that too. SJ44′s solution is the right one, but I have a bad feeling that Melky Cabrera may be the odd man out.
Im all for that but you know Torre is Mr.loyal and I dont
see him telling Damon that he cant get his position back.
Especially if Damon claims to be healthy again.
In another note. I cant stand Worthless pitching but I
have to believe that they are showcasing him for a trade.
After his tireade in the locker room Im sure that he will
be gone. Its just a matter of time. Lets hope he pitches
better so we could have a fool for a taker.
Donnie would also be a strong choice for “Best Sports Mullet!”
On Cot’s site, it shows Damon as having a “partial no-trade” clause. So I guess the Yankees CAN move him to some places. If Cashman has got the guts, he needs to move Damon ANYWHERE, install Melky as the permanent CFer, give Thompson/Duncan the 4th OF spot and move this team forward.
Damon is done. He hasn’t his since last August: that’s not a slump, that’s a decline. His speed is slightly plus, but he has no arm, no range, and no pop in his bat (he’s slugging a kindergarten-esque .281 since June 1).
Package him and Farnsworth together, get a b or b- prospect, and consider your lesson learned with the payroll flushed down the toilet.
Move Jeter back to leadoff, Abreu 2nd, A-Rod 3rd, Matsui, Posada, Cano, Giambi, Phillips, Cabrera.
Of course, none of that is going to happen. For all the talk of the Yankees being able to “absorb” mistakes because of their finances, their brain-trust prevents them from moving past their mistakes. Hence Farnsworth in the 8th, Damon in CF when Giambi comes back.
Dinosaurs are running this team.
Heck, they could DL Damon for 15 days right now, bring up Shelley Duncan (the opponents are TB, KC and Baltimore…Shelley may be able to pop one, esp. in Camden Yards with the 364 to LCF…and with the weakness of those teams maybe he gets hot and hits a few). If Shelley Duncan doesn’t do anything after two weeks, you have options a) Damon is reactivated. b) Giambi is ready.
For the next two weeks, you could go:
Jeter/Melky/Abreu/Alex/Matsui/Posada/S. Duncan/Cano/Phillips
r s l r l s r l r
It brings balance, gives the slumping (.238) Damon time to heal, let’s you look at a youngster, and gives Alex a righty power complement to the lineup. The only thing you have to lose is the weak outs Damon has been making. Shelley at DH is worth a shot.
Wade Boggs, Thurman Munson, and of course, don’t forget Goose Gossage all had significant ‘staches.
Goose’s ‘stache contributed greatly to him being able to scare the beejeezus out of hitters. That and the fact that he would occasionally buzz them under the chin with his mid-90′s heater. Other than Rocket, I don’t think the Yanks have anyone that scares todays hitters.
Now that Houston seem to be out of it. What do you guys
think of getting Mark Loretta to play first base this
year? He is batting 312 and has a great glove. I always
saw him as a pest when he was with Boston.
Thats offcoarse if we dont land tex.
I nominate the ’72 A’s for best team facial hair accomplishment:
http://tinyurl.com/26ybdp
I count 20 players out of 30 sporting the ‘stache.
And Goose gets my vote.
Keith Law doing a chat. Said the Yankees could get “Agita” for Farnsworth. Anyone know what that means? Sounds like a joke, but it’s not funny how bad Kyle is.
Also he’s VERY high on Joba. Potential #1 starter, would not trade him for Tex, AND would trade Hughes before Joba.
Future 1/2 starters? Nice.
as sure as i was that Randy Johnson wasnt going anywhere, i am REALLY sure Damon isnt going anywhere. With his body breaking down the way it has, he’s been relegated to a DH spot in a lineup who doesnt hit HRs. noone is going to take him for 2 seasons at that $$.
and i would personally like to see Jeter remain in a position to continue to drive in runs, not leadoff. I know he’ll hit there well if that is where he’s placed, but he has been out of his mind hitting with runners in scoring position this year.
any update on Hughes?
Agita is intigestion that leads to burping or gas
Not a fan of the fuzzy caterpillar look of Mattingly, and I think he looks much better now. Sal’s is as cool as it gets.
I dont see Damon being traded unless we eat a big portion
of his salary or trade a bad contract for bad contract.
Example Helton for Damon.
Does anyone else think Damon might be faking his some of
his injuries so he doesnt get ripped by the media and fans?
Yeah so far Hughes has pitched…
4 IP 2 H 1 ER 5 SO 2 BB
It’s dissappointing that Hughes gave up an earned run and 2 walks.
Oh and he’s at 57 pitches through 4
Player IP H R ER BB SO HR
Hughes 4.0 2 1 1 2 5 0 1.29 ERA
Mattingly and Long are trying to fix Damon’s swing. It seems that Damon always turn his left foot (back foot)towards the pitcher and it doesn’t allow him to hit the outside pitches. Hopefully, they can get that corrected quickly and keep his back foot from turning. Maybe that will get him going.
Well to be fair he gave up a lead off Double/strike out/walk and then a wild throwing error by the catcher while 3rd was being stolen led to the run.
Speaking of Mustaches
Does Tony Pena shave his off again when the Yanks win tonight?
the earned run was when the catcher threw the ball into left field when a guy was stealing third
Hughes so far: 4.0IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 5SO, 0HR
Hughes 4.0 2 1 1 2 5 0 1.29
Although, how does THIS count as an Earned Run ? :
With Caleb Stewart batting, Corey Coles steals (9) 3rd base, Corey Coles scores. Throwing error by catcher Dan Conway.
He reached 2nd on a double, but scores on a throwing error by the catcher ? I am quite sure that is an UNEARNED Run, right ?
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....x_treaax_1
New pitcher in. Hughes threw just under 60 pitches and had retired 8 in a row after the 1st inning.
Looks like that’s Hughes line for the day. Not sure how many pitches he threw. But a pretty good line.
Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
Hughes 4.0 2 1 1 2 5 0 1.29
( this is better,,,sorry )
Thanks for the updates Mel and Alan…wait a second..could you two be the great…nah, never mind
They should have let him atleast get to 70 today. This babying needs to end, were in a playoff race with Igawa as our 5th starter. We need him NOW!
Nobody is taking a package of Damon and Farnsworth in a trade. That’s over 30 million dollars in salary for two players struggling this season.
Who would be dumb enough to take that on?
I am sure a lot of the same people who want Damon gone now were the same folks who wanted Arod out of town a year ago.
The guy is hurt. You don’t just lose it that fast.
We can debate chapter and verse whether the Yankees should have DL’ed him earlier in the season. That’s on the Yankees, not on Damon. Damon doesn’t make personnel decisions.
We kill Carl Pavano for not trying to play through injuries, yet we now want to kill Damon for trying to do the same. You can’t have it both ways. The guy is trying to play through what, IMO, is a back or oblique injury. Its definitely affecting his bat speed.
Obviously, the Yankees feel a hurt Damon is better than a healthy Shelley Duncan. Duncan is a guy with a LOT of flaws, regardless of what his dad may think.
I know people think Duncan would just come up here and immediately hit HR’s or hit better than Damon. I don’t know, ML pitching is a helluva lot tougher than AAA pitching.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Shelley as a bench option when they go to 12 pitchers. As the everyday DH? I am not feelin’ it.
I don’t want to see Damon traded. Mainly because, right now, there is no market for him. I would much rather they get him as healthy as they can for the rest of the year and bust his butt in the off-season to get him ready for next year.
I want to see Giambi back and Damon as the “super sub” if you will. The guy is a solid guy in the locker room and won’t make waves. IMO, that’s the right way to go.
Don’t give up on Damon.
When he is healthy, he is a beast. He leads the team in SB with 16. Jeter’s stolen 8 and been caught 7 times. That’s horrible. Abreu’s been bad on the basepaths, too. AROD has 9.
HEALTHY Johnny Damon is something ANY team would want. Let him nurse his ailments and he will be the player he once was. We give up on players too easily and that is how they go to other teams and suddenly produce again (Sheff, Dotel, Contreras).
… If Hughes is up before the end of the season. And i mean last few weeks kind of thing.. I will be very disappointed. He needs time to rediscover his groove and get back into rhythm. He only pitched a couple of games for us, guys. He could have easily blown up in the next few games and been a bust just like the rest of the bunch this year that impressed early on (Desalvo, Clippard, Wright).
Let him stay in AAA!
Josh, if Hughes throws 80 his next start then he’s ready for the bigs after that. Igawa is getting one more start Saturday anyway, so there’s no point pushing Hughes. In all likelihood he gets two minor league starts, then joins the big club unless Kei throw a no-hitter.
There is no way Damon is faking injuries. Geez, where do people come up with this stuff?
The guy played most of last year with a broken foot. If you follow his history, the guy always plays hard.
Johnny Damon doesn’t fake injuries. Never has, never will. If he did, he wouldn’t have the respect of the guys in the locker room, which he obviously does.
The run is earned, but not really Hughes’ fault.
Binghamton Top 1st
Corey Coles doubles (10) on a fly ball to left fielder Colin Curtis.
Miguel Negron strikes out swinging.
Mike Carp walks.
With Caleb Stewart batting, Corey Coles steals (9) 3rd base, Corey Coles scores. Throwing error by catcher Dan Conway.
Caleb Stewart flies out to center fielder Jamal Strong. (would have been SF, hence the error doesn’t make the run unearned).
Brett Harper strikes out swinging.

Turn two…fair enough….you could have Abreu leadoff and Jeter at 3.

He is our best option. You cant compare Desalvo,Clippard
and Wright. They are finess pitchers and rely on location.
Hughes can make mistakes and get away with it being that
he has a 94 mph fastball.
I think he will do better than Igawa and Moose.
Keep in mind he left the last game with a no-hitter
so he knows he belongs here.
Keep in mind that it can all come unraveled easily if we rush him. Sure, he may help us a bit this year, but we could pay the price for years to come.
Ouch. Law sees Edwar as a “good middle reliever” and Brett Gardner as a 5th outfielder, maybe 4th.
and i also have a problem with Dale Earnhardt, Hulk Hogan, Pete Weber, and Richard Petty being on the ballot. These are athletes?
Look at Detroit they keep bringing in one young pitcher
after another. It hasnt seemed to backfire on them. I
think he is a tough kid mentally. Mature past his age.
We tend to keep our young players down in the minors
longer than most teams. Granted most teams are forced
to bring them up sooner rather than later. Perfect
example Wang would not have been in our rotation if
it wasnt for injuries. He probably would still be
down and we would be saying he isnt ready yet.
Mental toughness is something you either have or dont.
END OF 6TH CLEVELAND DOWN 4-0
saucy,
At least they have mustaches. Adam Morrison looks like he’s got a fake one with weak glue. He’s not much of an athlete either. Any golfers, bowlers, or poker players on the list?
This guy was on the radio promoting the list. They said that bullpen guys need mean mustaches because it makes them look intimidating on the mound. Cashman should glue one on Farnsworth to make him more attractive as trade bait.
The CS on Jeter doesn’t tell the whole story. Some of those CS are because they were actually hit and runs and the batter swung and missed.
Jeter was 34 for 39 last year in SB. Do you know what one of the five caught stealings was? It was in Tampa, late in the year. A suicide squeeze with Jeter on 3rd. The batter missed and left Jeter hung out to dry.
Anyone see the schedule in September all the teams ahead
of us have? They have to beat up on each other all the final
month. We have the easiest schedule of them all. If we
get close by the end of August, its ours for the taking.
With the way Septembers schedule is I also seeing teams
being tired out for the playoff run. So we wont be in
a disadvantage come October.
agreed, Adam Dirt-lip Morrison should not be on the list.
Anyone who has seen or heard Hughes knows that he is head and shoulders above Clippard, DeSalvo and Wright. Apples and Oranges. No use comparing them.
Mike, you have a valid point. They arent the same type of pitchers or same in maturity, but they are all rookies. It is risky keeping Hughes up. He makes rookie mistakes (that curveball that got him injured). Next time it could be more serious. Give him time to find his groove again in AAA and bring him up at the end of the season for a start or two before the playoffs.
Actually, Igawa was the worste signing. At least Pavano was good right before Cashman had signed him. But Igawa was a terrible pticher from the beginning. I just find it sad how the Yankees scouts in japan couldn’t realize that Igawa was getting strikeout after strikeout after strikeout, in Japan, on hanging 60mph, breaking balls. Pavano is a pansy, while Igawa just flat out sucks.
myrtlebeachfan, it couldn’t have been THAT much worse for Hughes. He had a bad injury as it was, and so far has missed a couple of months.
And you think it’s better to keep Hughes in the minors, give him one start in the majors, in late September, and then throw him into the playoffs? That is rediculous, what fi we don’t even go to the playoffs?
Hughes should be brought up as soon as he is ready, and he sure doesn’t need another 3 months in the minots to be ready for the majors, considering how good he was before he got injured.
what about thurman munson? he had a good stache too
Rollie Fingers HAS to win this even if Donnie Baseball is in it.
i agree with mg. gotta give it to Rollie
